Demon's Souls - Atlus & From Software's Action RPG - October 6

Wheeeeeee, RaidenTR is back at #4 in the US for souls collected! God damn this Kane guy in #1, I just can't catch up to him. He's always roughly twice as many souls as me. Hmmm, approaching 90 hours played; I play this game way too much lol.

I keep hearing alot about this poison cloud spell. When do you get that? I just freed Freke and got fire spray and warding. I assume it is a soul from one of the bosses I have yet to fight.

Someone mentioned not wanting to upgrade the winged spear. I have it at +6 right now and can do the moon + 1 but I was holding off till I could make it better because the stats go to crap at just +1. I couldn't believe the dropoff. I guess that's because it adds magic attack at the expense of physical. The only problem is I'm not sure what I need to upgrade it to +3 and I don't want to upgrade it at all until I can go all the way up.

Ok, I'm expecting the game to arrive either today or tomorrow so I want to know as many start-up tips as I can :)

So far I have;
 • Pick Royal

That's really all you need to know. But here's a few things that might help some more:

Make sure you have your shield equipped in the left hand and silver catalyst in the right hand. Approach enemies slowly and press R3 (click the right stick) to lock on and then blast them with Soul Arrow (R1 button). Just don't run willy-nilly into a group of enemies as even the low-level shambling zombie things in 1-1 can kill you pretty easily early on (and even now that I'm soul level 30 or so) if they surround you and hit you without your shield up.

Oh, and find the Thief's Ring which is on 1-1 as soon as possible. I missed this the first time around and had to go back and get it later. With that you are pretty much invicible to many enemies (because you can sneak within soul arrow firing range without being detected).

Once you defeat the boss on 1-1 I would suggest leveling up strength so you can handle the purple flame shield and winged spear which you will find on 1-1 and 1-2 after you get rid of a certain flying pest. I'm still using these same items much further on in the game.

Oh, also remember that 1-1 is laid out pretty well to take on in chunks with visits back to the Nexus to save your souls (by buying stuff since you can't level up yet). You will make a couple of circuits around and unlock doors that make it easier to get back to where you were. At the end when you get the big boss door open (the big one at the end of the first approach) you can definitely make a quick trip back to the Nexus, then just go back in and defeat the couple of guys between the archstone and the door easily enough. You may want to buy a Heater shield with your collected souls as that is a nice in between item while you wait for the purple flame shield and will serve you well in the first boss fight.

Oh, and if you see a red-eye knight at the end of a long walkway (there's only one on the whole level), avoid him for now. Come get him again once you level up a bit.

So, yeah, I guess there are lots of tips besides being a Royal ;).

Kill Boss 5-1 (Leechmonger/Impure Giant) and trade soul to Freke
Yeah, I looked it up as soon as it was mentioned here, lol. I love DoT spells.
Thanks man, I'm in Woodland Hills. I never heard of that shop
It's very "hole-in-the-wall" to be honest. It's been in Simi forever, in several locations. I've only been in there twice in the 16+ years I've lived here. They're in the process of remodeling, and I've always felt pretty awkward walking in there...but I've never *not* found what I was looking for there.

I think I bought Chrono Trigger there for the DS for like 15 bucks the day it came out.

The girl that sold me Demon's Souls did fill me in that they're guaranteeing that they'll have the lowest prices in town. Pretty awesome for a little store that I'd assumed didn't do very well.

io, mebbe others can chime in, but as I said above, I really regret upgrading to the moon path of the spear. I did it towards the end, where enemies with high magic defense start cropping up, so I'm practically only doing the physical defense damage. And from what I've read, 1-4 boss is almost completely immune to magic damage, so looks like I'm gonna have to spam poison cloud...

For NG+ I think I'll try picking a different weapon. Spears are great imho, but it'll keep things fresh.

Also, I LOVE Death Cloud for those fucking read eye knights in 1-4. Cast it on them and run like the little bitch I am ;)

Alright, well I'll hold off on upgrading it for now then.

So, I went after the 4-1 boss and got wiped out twice. Got back to my bloodstain the second time so I had close to 20,000 souls when I died the second time. Then the stupid black katana knight at the entrance got me the 3rd time because I got hung up on something while rolling away. Anyway, I cut my losses and just went back to get those souls (so I ended up with about 9000). On the plus side, I'm getting good at dealing with the silver skeletons .

I wish there was a quicker way to get back to that boss though - that level is definitely not designed like 1-1 where you can unlock the boss and have an easy trip from the Nexus.

I didn't look at the guide at all for the Adjudicator but I wish I had. He was killing me through multiple levels of flooring (he's down below) and the first time I never even got to see him. The second time I cast warding and went down a few levels and fired off a few soul arrows but the animation for eating healing items takes so damn long he killed me while I was trying to heal.

Oh well, I'll read the guide and see what it says. It seems the only safe area is right by the fog at the top. But from there you can't attack him either.

Edit - Bah, OK... So if you stay at the top it's his stupid tongue that's attacking you. It seemed like multiple spears when I was getting hit . I guess I need to go all the way to the bottom and attack from there.

Back to demons souls this weekend. Glad that game started somewhat slow.

I cant wait to do some sit down with this, this weekend.
Poison cloud is one of the best spells ever.
It also hampers healing in PvP, so it's great for getting the person on the defensive. While they're fumbling through items, since many people don't hot bar the royal lotus, I just move in for the kill.

He's quite possibly the easiest boss in the game if you just counter-clockwise circle-strafe him.

Ordered the collector's edition. Was waiting on eca codes but it could sell out. Hope no one minds if I ask the occasional question that may have already been answered throughout these forty-odd pages.

Tried to play as a royal and never saw my HP go up from the ring or the spell. I said the hell with it and went back to the barbarian. Got a little farther in the first level and was able to buy a helm. I also bought a sword but cant use it with one hand yet. I can see it taking a week till I'm done with this level.

No game today, maybe tomorrow but well see. It's in PA right now but I can hope, right? I think what I'm looking forward to most about this game is the longevity. It might take a couple of days to get through some levels and that's awesome.

HP? The royal gives you a ranged attack with soul arrow spell and comes with a fragrant ring that regens MP points. Not HP. The ring has to be equipped to work. The catalyst (wand) when equipped increases your MP and allows for spell usage.

To kill the 4-1 boss
Stay very close to him and attack the meat cleaver stuck in his side. When he attacks you with the meat cleaver roll clockwise around him and the attack should go over your head. There is a pretty decent youtube video showing the technique. After hitting him enough in the side he will fall over, and you can attack his head for a ton of damage.

I had great success with this method. I
didn't even have to roll, as soon as he did the teehee noise I just ran under his attacking arm. Took a minute to get the timing, but once you do it is cake.
I am having the hardest time with the flying dragon in 1-4 any tips?
Keep summoning blue phantoms until one of them kills it for you, that's what I did.

Yep.
Get your health below 30% and use Clever Rat's Ring. Bring tons of heavy arrows and use the best bow you have available to you. Absolutely take out 50% of his health when he's perched over the rampart and loose only when his head is staring down sight. Once he moves, make sure you're as close as possible down the steps (about two steps from the foyer is the best you can do) and again, volley when his head is mostly static.

I was popping him for ~50 on the ramparts and ~40-22 on the castle wall. Took me ~400 arrows to down, but he's so easy the hard part is patience to just sit there for 20 minutes.

A hunter starts with a bow.. now magic but the bow has further range anyway... arrows can get expensive..

Short of finding a
crossbow on level 1-1
I dont think there are a lot of ranged weapons that are affordable right away.

Plus I find the hunter is pretty badass with his axe and can cut down quite a few enemies at a time, or at least stun them.

You cant even get the magic spells offered until you have the wand (catalyst) or talisman. Before that the NPC's that offer them want nothing to do with you.

Someone please give me some B&M retailers that carry this game! My local Best Buy is sold out and I refuse to shop at Gamestop. I just cannot find anyone else carrying this game. I would just order off Amazon, which I might have to do in the long run, but I have some fodder from the b2g1 at TRU this week and I would really like to swap out for what I want, which is of course Demon's Souls.

Any help tracking this gem down would be much appreciated.

Just order it online. goHastings.com has the Deluxe edition for $66 shipped after the 10% off coupon.

Yeah, you missed the part where I said I have a game to return for it. I would have liked to have gotten it at TRU as one of my b2g1 games, but they don't carry it so I have a sealed copy of a new game to return and swap for Demon's Souls. I did find one small retailer around Indy that has a collectors edition, but they won't return without a receipt which does nothing to help my cause.

Bingo! You are correct. I'll probably end up having to order it online, like I said one place has the CE and they will take my brand new sealed copy of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising for $30 trade-in, but won't return it and just let me pay the $10 difference for Demon's Souls. I'm not about to trade-in a brand new sealed game for half it's value.

And somehow I just now discovered that you can zoom even further in with the bow by pressing up on the dpad. Wish I would have known this ages ago!

eBay it.

Yeah, I was trying to use the Tower Guardian strategy of sniping him from above .

That's another cool aspect of this game - you have to use a different strategy for each boss.

But you have to admit, going in there cold you have NO idea what's going on. I was just walking around the top and all of a sudden I get hit for 75% of my health, knocked down, barely have time to heal once, then get killed again on a second hit. I didn't even know where he was or that there was even a way to get downstairs (or that there even were stairs). This game would be pretty frustrating without the guide and/or Internet that's for sure!

if you have the bow equipped you dont even need to hit R2 to draw it back... just click L2 and teh dpad up and you zoom..

Who needs a telescope anyway? A shiny telescope.

I think I did this by accident and was like, WTF!? Then I forgot about it (though I haven't really needed to zoom much since then anyway). It might have been helpful with that first dragon though.

Yeah, I knew about the regular "bow mode" but the dpad is news to me. It also works for the telescope? I remember trying the telescope one time and thought it was worthless since it had no range!

Thanks that helps :):bouncy:

actually bj, I would take off all your armor and run up the steps through the door under him. Make sure you're on the right side of the stairs (dragon's left) and you start running IMMEDIATELY after he starts sweeping from his left to his right.

Can you kill him if you run past him? I was trying to do this guy earlier, got roasted twice on the second part and lost quite a bit of souls.

Oh Jodou, I got an extra Friend's Ring in New Game+ (monumental gives you one every game cycle if your CT is pure white) so if you get that Foe's ring be sure to PM me!

Guess I read the book wrong. I thought the icon that came up when I casted the spell with the royal was to regain HP.

If you are using soul arrow, just make sure to target enemies by clicking R3 and then fire the spell at them. Should hit and you don't have to get right up on them. But if you continue with other character this may not apply for awhile. ;)

I decided to try the blue soul thing today and first I helped some guy beat the tower knight, then I tried it in 3-1 and ended up as a black phantom in this small room I couldn't leave - the door was foggy. After not seeing what to do I left (using the stone that lets you leave) thinking maybe I accidently put down the black phantom stone. Then I did the blue one again and the same thing happened. After a minute of running around the room I guess the guy who I invded died so I won and got a crazy hat - not much defense but apparently it makes magic stronger. Has anyone else had this happen, and what was it/can I leave that room?

Is this also going to change my WT? (not that I've been paying too much attention to that anyway)

On another note I killed the red dragon :)

^ The
big boss for world 3 does not fight he summons a black phantom to fight for him. So, if you lay down blue stone you have a large chance of being summoned to fight on the evil team as opposed to getting
help.

Why does WT have a mind of its own? I finished 5 completely and have not even been back there. I messed up the WT away from pure white. I checked my screen and it was back to pure white. I went in and completed the tendency thing I needed. Is it effected by its own going ons? Am I changed by what other people have going on? Same thing is going on in Stonefang. Though I think I am bugged out in there this playthrough. No matter what, no Scirvir. :/

In the guide, it says that killing the bosses (or maybe, it's just talking about the 1-1 boss. It's confusingly written) affects the WT of all the worlds, from my understanding, but I was somewhat skeptical about it.

Yeah, I saw for sure that Phalanx does. But I have had no bosses to kill in a long time (save dragon and 1-4, which I haven't even done). I have done nothing big, just farm a little. And my tendency goes wherever it wants in whatever world it wants.

Well that explains it. It's a good thing they never made it there since I would have gotten my butt kicked (I barely made it through 3-1). The hat is kind of awesome though (in appearance even if not in usage), so it works out in the end I guess.

Apparently WT gets bugged to shit when you play online. I played offline cause I kept getting invaded in 4-1, and when I went back online my Pure White WT went to neutral, seriously Atlus has to do something about this bullshit.

There's a notice servers will be down on 10/21, so maybe they're doin a fix then? Who the fuck knows...

On a sidenote, I got my ass kicked on Flamelurker in Newgame+. I didn't die, but he kicked the shit outta me, I dunno why I did so badly this time. What were people's strategies on him, melee-wise? I'm glad it won't get significantly harder in Newgame++, cause theres definitely a noticable leap in difficulty.

Yeah, I saw that about servers down. I hope they make public any changes they make (if any).

The guide recommends playing offline when WT matters mainly due to invaders... but this is crap as I've not had any in ages. So, I may have to play offline next game to get the BT events I am missing (few WhT too I think). But it will be lonely without the white phantoms popping in randomly and the myriad of blood stains to laugh at.
