Devil May Cry 5: This is not the Dante you are looking for...

Why do people get so fired up about this stuff. Just don't buy the game, the next one after that will go right back to what it was before.

The only good DMC game is the first one. That game was so ahead of it's time. I also remember it being the first true "Next Gen" style game on the PS2. Before that games were just kind of lame.

In any case, this series is in serious need of a reboot or a time out. I hope DMC 5 is just that.

Does anyone think the backlash on this will affect the sales of Enslaved? That game has been getting a lot of buzz from the press about being really good.

My name is Tameem Antoniades, but I feel like slapping my face into this game, so please call me Dante.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=265914
But creative director Tameem Antoniades insists it's OK because Dante's new look is cool.

"It's about Dante being cool and making you feel cool when you're playing it, and so the combat and the style system and everything is integral to that."

"But, you know, what was cool 12 years ago, I think that was when the first game came out, isn't cool anymore," he continued.

"If Dante, dressed as he was, walked into any bar outside of Tokyo, he'd get laughed out."

But we don't want him to walk into a bar Tameem, we want him to slice people up! Oh, sorry, you've not finished...

Of all the reasons to hate the new Dante, the best reason is because the dude decided he wanted Dante to be him because he thinks he's cool and the old Dante isn't cool anymore. That cocky son of a bitch. Time to riot.
So wait, DMC 1 came out in 98, pre-PS2? This guy's going to fail badly.
I was wondering if I was the only one who had caught that. I'm having a hard time believing this guy knows the first thing about the series.

I hope that Jacob is an unlockable character.

This is one of those rare few cases in which I wish the project got canned. They need to release an emergency demo or something that could prove us that the gameplay is so badass that we can overlook Dante being portrayed by Tameem Antoniades.

Inspirational interview with Dante.... errr.... the developer, WTF?? ---------> http://www.gametrailers.com/video/tgs-10-devil-may/704980

So dumb... I can't believe how far game developers have swayed from making fun and cool games. They are talking about shit that nobody cares about like it's some deep and thought-provoking concept.

Ninja Theory seems to be in love with themselves despite spewing nothing but shit this generation.Heavenly Sword sold so much more than it deserved simply because it was one of the only playable titles on the system at the time, and Sony put so much advertising behind it.

Enslaved is going to bomb. And their DmC is completely off. It's clear these are people with a lot of money and very little talent.

Give credit where credit is due: they spewed out shit last generation, too. Kung Fu Chaos on Xbox sucked.

I loved Heavenly Sword, so if I heard that Ninja Theory was doing DMC5 without seeing the character, I would be super pumped. After seeing the character design, I won't touch the game with a 10 foot pole. They need to listen to the fans, scrap the character design, and just start over. If not, I hope they don't sell a single copy and go out of business. Their decisions lately are pure crap.

Losers that would have gone into the movie or some other industry have now seeped their way into the gaming industry. Let's be honest, these aren't the people that grew up playing on old PCs playing point and click adventures, RTS, etc.

I hope this somehow ends up being the best DMC yet just to see the reasons people will come up with not to play it anyway.

I don't like the character change either, but damn, the way people talk you'd think Ninja Theory drove around in a truck snatching up babies.

They drive around in a truck making horrible action games, which is the real problem.

But the character change bitching is getting more annoying than the character change itself...wow, people really worshipped some corny two dimensional game character. The trenchcoat look is not really in anymore, this isn't the year 2000. They're trying to make him more relevant to teens.

Big surprise--a game company doesn't find story/character design to be all that sacred and places marketing before it instead.

I wouldn't nearly hate the design as much as I do if I didn't know the lead design didn't slap his face on it. That just makes it ridiculous. I bet when he walks around the office they call him Dante and he loves it. He then proceeds to shoot them with finger guns in stylish ways. After pleasing his coworkers/fans, he returns to his office to admire photos of himself and drinks out of his world's greatest game designer mug.

But who knows, maybe Ninja Theory decided to use kinect/eyetoy in a special way and the twist is
Dante is YOU

Yeah, that's what bugs me most about it. You just know that guy hops around his living room in a bath robe shooting at mirrors with fingers.

The backlash has been ridiculous. The character design isn't appealing to me either (it looks terrible and the Robert Pattinson photoshop is dead-on) but can't gamers just wait until the game comes out and then not buy it? Like consumers of just about every other good or service?

God, if somehow Capcom made this Dante the main character of Mega Man Legends 3 (what I consider to be two of the best games Capcom has ever made) I wouldn't take it nearly as personally as the entire gamer community has.

It's simply a matter of what you buy games for. Some people here think games are strictly fun because of gameplay mechanics, others are in it for that and the presentation as a whole.

The backlash isn't ridiculous at all. People want to play Devil May Cry, now they are getting something different -- whether it's good or not, it's no longer the DMC people know. It's not just the hair or a red jacket, you can tell Ninja Theory has dedicated it to a brand new image, one that isn't remotely reminiscent of DMC in any way.

Say you're a fan on Ninja Gaiden. A new one is announced as a reboot and the game turns out to be Bayonetta. Solid game? Sure. Want to play as a trashy sex symbol who gets nude after every combo? Not everyone's cup of tea.

So if you never gave a shit about DMC for its presentation, or even cared for the franchise at all, you probably either don't care about what Ninja Theory is doing or you might be curious to see the gameplay footage. But even then, I don't see how anyone over the age of 14 could look at that trailer and find it "cool." And I think if we consider the fact that Ninja Theory has never made a good title in the history of their existence, that the moment we saw the direction they took for DmC it could be safely assumed that history is going to repeat itself.

Just another sad attempt to show the newest generation that:

"Hey, I know we're old, but we're still hip, right? right? Guys?".

~HotShotX

As always, if the game is fun, that's all I care about. Only fools will say they play DMC games for the story, which if we're being honest, hasn't been good since the first game. Perhaps with a younger Dante we will learn a bit more about his past? I'll wait to pass judgement until I've actually played the game.
Only fools will say they play DMC games for the story, which if we're being honest, hasn't been good since the first game.
And only fools will deny that the style had something to do with what made the originals so awesome. And again, this developer's track record of stupid, shallow action games bodes poorly for the chances of DMC having good gameplay.

Perhaps with a younger Dante we will learn a bit more about his past?
Except no, because this is not actually a prequel to the other games. It's a reboot, so everything is from scratch. So, we're not learning anything about the Dante from the other games.
fuck this game and fuck the lead developer its obvious he made dante look like him, this was posted at capcom forums

This is the most important point here. That guy is the lead developer? Seriously? What a narcissistic emo asshat. The only way this can be made right is if the real dante shows up within 10 minutes and kills this punk. He is ruining an established character, that fans want more of, just so he can pretend to be cool.

Anubis posted an interview with him a page back...ughhhhh. All i heard was "Yeeeee, I'm dante I'm Dante!" Anyone know of any other examples of a lead developer making or changing a character to so obviously be based on themselves?

This could be a new big meme though. I dont have any video editing skills, but take all of gaming and movies most beloved characters, paste his face over, and it suddenly becomes dark and brooding, cool and edgy. Get to work internets

I think I preferred your pre-edit comment where you were wishing "real Dante" would appear and put him in his place. I too wish a buff, shirtless man in leather would show up... it'd be the best bachelorette party ever!

My edit didn't change wanting to have the established dante show up and kill this emo wannabe. So not sure what you prefer about the "pre-edit" version of that. Just added the last 2 remarks.

Regardless of the homo-erotic man love you are (sarcasticly?) expressing for dante, the fact remains that he is one of the most iconic, highly rated, and "cool" video game characters out there. If you did a poll, he would be up there. So changing the character will cause controversy. Changing him into a chain smoking emo will cause more. If the lead developer of a crappy studio has modeled this crappy character after himself, that takes it to "FU level" idiocracy. And to cap it off, the developers justificiation for making himself dante is that the established dante is no longer cool...but the new "me" version is! Im not even a big DMC or dante fan, but fuck that.

...almost as pathetic as someone transcribes their laughter when they probably weren't actually laughing in the first place.
