The complex stat point training isn't necessary just to get through the game, it is really only for people who want to be a hardcore complex battler with other hardcore complex battlers. Unless you want to be a competitive battler with other humans you don't really need to use that element of the game. Just go back to training your pokemon like always (just note that rare candies aren't exactly bad this time around!)
Training pokemon is crucial, but you don't have to be obsessive about it to finish the game. Yes training a pokemon will make it stronger than one that is caught in the wild, a lot stronger. You can technically get the same result if you train starting at level 50 as you can if you train starting at level 1, its just if you start at level 1 you progress more naturally through it.
