Discuss E3!

Is it me or isn't it about time they have simultaneous translation displayed across one of the video screens to allow the speakers to continuously speak. ( I mean most small conferences I attend have that just for ADA (people who are deaf) reasons. c'mon its 2009
I just like how when shit like Natal and the PS3 motion is shown, it's like a big deal. But when Nintendo introduced the Wiimote, it gets hated on?

The ironing is delicious.
Love that ironing! Starch it up!!!!

Anyway, you know I was thinking about that, why the hell is motion controller so appealing to me now, but before I didn't care for it. I think that issue that I had w/ Nintendo is that, the motion controller was the "primary" controller and way of playing the game. Also, its like the motion on Nintendo's console was forced, there's no real standard controller that just hooks up to the system directly. With Sony and Microsoft the motion controller / camera is a secondary controller, and its not meant to releplace the basic input (controller).

Regarding the slim PS 3, it's just way too early for that. For one, they haven't dropped the price on the current PS 3, so they'll come up with a slim one and be just as expensive? So Sony is going to have 2 different consoles on the market that no one will buy? Doesn't make sense from a business perspective. Honestly, I think they haven't dropped the price b/c the PS 2 is still selling so well. It's pure profit, so its like they are basically gaining the money back from all the losses they take on the PS 3 sales.
I am not impressed by Natal. A few of the games I already played with eye toy/ vision cam.

And Milo is an even bigger disappointment. It seems to be another version of Seaman or the import only N.U.D.E. Since this is Peter Molyneux we are talking about the final game wont do half the stuff promised.
More like 1/3. Molyneux fucking sucks.

Biggest surprise of E3? I don't think it's a very open competition.

I'd have to say Metroid: Other M, then Final Fantasy XIV after.
We now have this Natal Crap instead of making a new console.
Erm... comical. Let me get this straight there's nothing wrong with these RROD consoles and you're gonna make US the controller? Ha... If I have a 360 by then...

I don't know what's funnier out of the three companies what THEY think the future of how we should be entertained in front of this crap should be. If I want to draw a pic and give it to the game I'll do that and hand it to another person thanks. If I want to flail around like an idiot I'll just go rile up some bees nest.

All I can say is I can't wait for this shit because Youtube will be soooooooooo much more entertaining.

To be honest, I'm really starting to get much more interested in the possibilities of Natal technologies, being used in the field of human/computer interface. I think that sort of thing is the foundation for some really "Star Trek" possibilities.

I think something that hasn't really been thought about is using Natal with a standard controller. Say you are playing a Star Wars game and instead of hitting a button while playing, you just stuck your hand out and choked someone and tossed them aside and went back to playing the game.

Out of all the R&D stuff shown this time around, this is the most promising. The initial video had me crying out bullshit, which it is, but the paint program seems to show what can be done. I think that they will try to push this out for next Christmas as a new sku to market it. This is their "Wii Fit" and they will try to get 3rd parties to sign up for it.

The other thing is how expensive is it to develop for? The Wii is cheap so people do these kind of games, does that mean games like Boom Blox and Madworld will be coming to the 360 in this form? Microsoft tends to have a ton of promises but this one they really have to deliver on or else it is a big egg on their face.

The Wii Motion Plus and PS3 Eye Wand look silly in comparison, I really don't think Sony or Nintendo knew that Microsoft was going to show off something like this. They just have to work on their own products to make it that much better. Surprised there is not Wii Camera yet though.
I'm addicted to E3 coverage. This is my favorite time of the year. I'm watching random coverage videos on Gamespot and jumping to IGN whenever they have anything on.

What else is coming up? We get Square-Enix conference tomorrow right?

I'm so addicted to soaking up ALL the details right now.
Haha you said it! I'm glued to all the gaming sites right now! So many awesome things this year, definitely an E3 to remember.
I fucking love The Last Guardian already. I'm gonna BAW when the guardian dies.
Just read there is no online for New Super Mario Bros Wii...sad the system is being pushed to the limit already with all the stuff on the screen...and it looks horrible

Nintendo just keeps dropping the sticky ball
2010 will be pretty dam crazy for gaming software sales.
I think you mean Spring 2010. It feels like there are 50 games coming out in March alone.

I dont know... in my mind Sony won... but maybe thast only because I love Third person action games and Uncharted 2 and God of War III were demoed. MSFT spent way too much time on Natal, and I really could care less. That kind of technology has been around for a while and there is a reason no one has used it. Yeah, it's great technology, but how is it going to be used in games to really keep me interested?

Again, Sony won because their big annoucements and what they showcased were exclusives.
MSFT were "Were getting what our opponents have!"

Uh, MS had Alan Wake, Halo ODST, Halo: Reach, Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Shadow Complex, Crackdown 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and stole MGS.

They just didn't focus on Natal, they had a strong line up of exclusives and announcement. Natal/Milo was just extra awesomeness.

If a Zelda game comes out for Wii next year, 2010 is far and away the Year of the Wii. I think it's already the Year of the Wii with Galaxy 2, Metroid and No More Heroes 2. Adding Zelda to that...wow. The trifecta in 1 year would be insane.

the video skipped on me so I may have missed it, but I don't remember Mass Effect 2 being shown during the MSFT conference I will count Halo: ODST. . But not crackdown 2 or Reach. Showing CGI trailers with no gameplay really doesn't count. Same way I won't give sony credit for Agent (in fact I think thats stupid. HEY We are making this game! No other info!")

And they spent the most time on Natal and Milo, and that was at the end, and typically the end is were the most big announcements are.

And again, yes they are getting Metal Gear Rising, but they still don't have MGS 4, and sony is getting Metal Gear Rising as well.

In the end, I got to see Uncharted 2, MAG, God of War 3 all demoed in real time on stage, plus trailers of Ratchet and Clank, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo PSP and PS3, Metal Gear Solid PeaceWalker, and the Last gaurdian.

In the end, I still think Sony won, becuase they focused the most on games, not stupid things like Xbox 360 twitter and facebook, or how they are bringing the video store to Europe (why was this announced at E3 and not leipzig? Makes no sense to me).

Fair enough.
I thought MS blew them all away. I'm so glad to hear everyone who has been testing Milo/Natal have nothing but great things to say about it, and it's still early on so it could be really, really good when it comes out. Here's hoping!
Not just that, but every game I wanted to see showed up, and then some. Got some cool new things like instant netflix streaming with 1080i, Zune store, social networking, last.fm, and more party integration. Games, incredible motion technology, and more options for the experience - score!

Sony did well though, they finally have stuff going for them and they definitely seemed to cater to the sony fans. Not sure I'm with the whole wii motion plus copy controller, but it looks better than the wii's if done right, so it has potential, just as Natal.

Nintendo, well, they sucked, but not nearly as hard as last year.
New Metroid, new zelda, 2 marios, and apparently, Miyamoto announced a new Wii Zelda on the way, so I guess that's pretty good. For nintendo at least.

While the Social networking stuff and Last.FM is cool and everything, I just don't think thats the kind of thing you spend time on at an E3 conference.

Again, I agree with Natal. But I am just afraid it's going to be just like the Wii, where it's cool for 15 minutes, but then what does it do to keep your attention afterwards? Most people play games to sit back and relax, not jump around. I will admit it's great technology, but like others I am very skeptical of how it works, and also, the technology has been around for a while, so why hasn't it taken off before or why hasn't anyone used it before? Eye Toy has been doing stuff like this for a while, and there's either two reasons why it never become hugely successful. A. No one wanted it. B. Wasn't marketed correctly (with which Sony, is highly plausible).
I guess only time will tell, but for me, I don't think it's something that I will ever get into.

Again, I liked Sony's better because they focused more on games, and although while thier tech demo was funny, I really wish they wouldn't have come up with the thing. I think this whole motion controller fixation is stupid, and Sony and MSFT won't be able to beat nintendo at it.

And Nintendo loses for one reason, and one reason only. They bring Iwata out to talk for 15 minutes about a fricken heart beat counter? I mean seriously? You spend all this time leading up to it, introduce it, and then don't explain what it does at all? Epic fail.

This is what Nintendo did, and you know what, I feel the exact same way:

Haha, thats awesome. While I didn't get excited, I was more shocked and thought to myself "Wow, that actually looks cool. I wonder how they are going to do it on the Wii?"

The one thing the Natal has over something like the Eyetoy is the ability to track movement in 3-D, to an extent. It's not hard to create a silhouette of a person standing in front of a webcam, but their technology also uses infrared to figure out the distance of objects. A few measurements and some basic physics, and it's able to figure out movement and speed of movement of objects in front of it. Strictly hardware speaking, that's the only real difference between it and a standard webcam.

Personally, just as I think it's premature to call it stupid, I think it's just as premature to call it a revolution. The 360 is a gaming system, first and foremost. Both Sony and Microsoft are guilty of showing tech that could be fun to play with, before they had anything fun to play with it. A peripheral should not sell the software....the software should sell the peripheral. Before I start singing the gospel of either, I want to see what games I can play with 'em.

The hard thing about Natal is going to be getting it into the hands of good portion of their install base. No matter how much people like it, it still can't touch the Wii. I get the feeling from both Microsoft and Sony it's like 'hey, we have the movement thing, too, pay extra for it'

Microsoft and Sony just want a piece of that market that's all, also, a lot of those Wii games that were exclusive primarily because of the Wiimote are no longer exclusive. Take a game like bloom blox, that can come out for MS and Sony because now they have their hands in the motion controller pot. It may never touch the Wii, but hey just having a piece of that casual / motion controlling market is good enough.

People were fawning all over the then-Revolution's controller when it was introduced, even before really seeing it in action. Don't know what you're talking about.

Not sure I like the already-established trend of putting Natal and PS3 Dildocontroller together like they are the same thing.

Anyway...

Not taking into account who "won" or whatever as far as quality games - I'd say Microsoft definitely had the best actual presentation of the three. They bring out Kojima as a surprise, Tony Hawk shows his new game, Spielberg comes out to shine the Natal helmet a bit, and they have the fucking Beatles there. Plus they never had anyone droning on for too long without showing some gameplay footage or jumping to the next thing on the agenda, they really kept it moving. The Milo stuff at the end was lengthy but it almost had to be since this was something that hadn't really been seen before. And even then they didn't stick with a talking head too long or just show gameplay for an extended period without breaking it up for more explanation.

I think Sony's showing could have been better if they just got their shit together on how to present it. Showing a fairly long montage of games video where the actual game footage only takes up like 1/3rd of the screen and not displaying any name/publisher/release date was ridiculous. Having a couple of long speeches with no gameplay footage (especially the on-the-fly translated one) was incredibly dull. Just abruptly cutting off the God of War gameplay demo due to time constraints was the icing on the cake - that was their main event of the evening and it just randomly stopped.

I know they want a piece of it, and their piece is going to be a bunch of crumbs in comparison to the Wii.

Natal will come on the 720 in box not sooner.

It will not make sense to release it before then. They are not going for the 10 year cycle maybe 5-6 with an overlap of their systems.

Watch and see.

There's no reason why it couldn't work with the current and future system.

I don't know how everyone else feels but I think all 3 companies had strong showings this year. I have seen a lot of people shitting on Nintendo but I was overall happy with their E3. We are getting a brand new fresh-looking Metroid, Mario galaxy 2, the announcement of the next Wii Zelda, a new Mario Bros. 2D platformer for Wii, ect. My expectations were kind of low to begin with but I was happy overall.

I was also equally excited for both Microsoft and Sony. Both companies have so many great games on the way, makes me happy I own both systems. I don't think any one company won E3, I think we the consumers won this year.

It was so bad that we had to give it to a completely unrelated party?
Good point, but the problem is that motion control on Wii is "out of the box" while those for MS and Sony are separate peripherals.
That's not a problem, these are "secondary" controllers, whereas the motion controller for the wii is the primary controller. MS and Sony are putting the regular non-casual gamers first; Neither company is trying to "force" anyone to use motion controls. On Nintendo you can't use a regular controller w/o the Wii mote, The GC controllers don't even work with every game.
I know they want a piece of it, and their piece is going to be a bunch of crumbs in comparison to the Wii.
You know they'll take whatever they can get, as longs as those are crumbs falling from Nintendo's table. Sony has been enjoying those Handheld Gaming crumbs for a while as well. (and even MS wants a bit of it as well now).

Agreed. It's great having 3 consoles out at a time (and owning all 3 :) )
because the competition makes for great games.

I don't think they're having one. They're just doing a booth this year, as far as I can tell (and seeing as how it's already open, I don't think we should be expecting any more surprises from Capcom this week).
