Do you watch anime?

I know some people are anti-anime, but when I turn on the TV and see commercials for stupid reality shows like "I Want to be a Hilton" on NBC, it makes anime seem much more appealing. Some animes even have better storylines than most primetime dramas.

What kinds of anime do you watch?

I'd say I watch a decent amount of anime. I hate a lot, especially ANYTHING with giant mechs that fight each other (like Evangelion and Gundam). I also hate DBZ. But probably my two favorite series overall are Fullmetal Alchemist and Bleach. FMA took a bit of a turn towards the end of it, but overall I loved it. Bleach has been amazing throughout to me. I also like Inuyasha, Basilisk, Naruto, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Mai-HiME, Samurai 7, and Azumanga Daioh.

I watch good shows, a few anime shows included. Especially Bebop, I have watched it through many times.

But cookie cutter plots, like powered up people fighting (scryed, DBZ) or chick shows (Fruits Basket), really suck ass. They shouldn't even be allowed to exist.

I do however love giant fighting robots, they are undeniably awesome.

Dude, Fruits Baskets owned ( RIP Ritsuko Okazaki :( )! I have been watching less and less anime over the years. I used to watch a lot during highschool, especially when I found out how to use irc. Now I just chat.

Maybe I would watch more if I had cable. There are a lot of good shows now on cartoon network.

Technically anime is the term used for animation in Japan. They refer to Disney movies as anime. However, anime is the popular term for Japanese animation in America. Followed by Japanime and Japanimation.

I prefer to watch Tokusatsu (live action) which has been hindering my anime viewing but i've been watching Bleach recently along with the occasional movie that looks interesting.

If you're into the live action, there's the obvious, GTO. But there's also Gokusen (season 2 already past), H2 (based on a baseball anime) and, dare I say it, Sailor Moon.

I prefer the super hero (Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Sei Shin) shows over dramas and the other stuff. I am currently downloading Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon though, gotta give it a chance.

Evangelion don't actually fight each other. They kill angels.

Truth be told, Sailor Moon is my guilty pleasure. The one show I'm embarassed to admit I watched religiously. Plus I have a crush on the girl who plays Sailor Mercury. She's just too darn cute.

Ever check out shows like Kamen Rider?
Evangelion don't actually fight each other. They kill angels.
Doesn't matter..I've watched two or three episodes, and all the characters annoy me to know end and it's nowhere near as philosophical as they'd believe you it is. It's a steaming pile of shit if you ask me.

Yeah, I have but it's just not my cup of soup. I kinda gave up the whole power ranger-type stuff. The storylines started repeating too much. I did see the newer Kamen Riders and I did like it a bit but it was still too close to the power ranger stuff for me to fully appreciate.

To bad those shows have nothing to do and are totally different from Power Rangers but to each his own I guess. It is true though, alot of live action series are usually very episodic and are big toy commercials but theres a few gems that will keep you enticed throught the entire series (Kamen Rider Blade, practically no filler).

Not so much. Most anime is utter shit poorly translated to try and sell itself to Japan freaks and losers. I did watch Samurai Champloo last night, and I did enjoy it. I like stuff like Princess Mononke, but I don't think I could ever watch/collect anime as a hobby.

yeah, just started last winter and I watch it in spurts. I like most of what I've seen though I'm pretty picky about it-- no mechs, no overly cutesy happy stuff, and no DBZ type of stuff. I haven't watched any long series, though I just got a hold of some Naruto.

Basically, good(stylish or violent) action, abstract plots, and suspense get my attention the most. I like some drama as long as it isn't too cliched, like Bebop's noir-ish aspects.

So far, I've watched and thoroughly enjoyed these:

--Bebop
--Hellsing(though I can't watch it now that I've read the amazing manga that it's based on)
--Serial Experiments Lain
--Paranoia Agent
--Samurai Champloo
--Elfen Lied

as for movies:
--Akira
--Memories
--Mononoke
--Spirited Away
--Vampire Hunter D
--D: Bloodlust
--Bebop movie
--Kite

I'd recommend any of it to anyone!

I watch it sporadically, I usually only watch new shows when I get demos on DVD via Newtype. I like Madlax, Excel Saga, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw Star. I'd like to check out Gantz, too. The only anime DVDs I have is the Cowboy Bebop Essential DVD, and disc 3 of Evangelion.

hmmmm....there's good stuff and bad stuff, like anything else. Don't judge it all on what you've seen on adult swim ;-)

The stuff on [AS] is all pretty solid ...

he mentioned dubs, so I figured he was referring to AS(like Inuyasha)
To bad it's dubbed and (usually) censored.
Dubs get a bad rap largely from stuff that isn't true anymore. And [AS] is pretty good about censorship.

As "Dub Defender Extrodinare", I have to quote fellow Coastal actor Micheal Brady:

"Dubs dont' suck, only BAD dubs suck." I've been involved in many a dub/sub war over the net, and still hold my record of winning almost everytime, because I make people think. If more studios did quality dubs, then there would be no aruguing, but a few bad dubs over the years have put a nasty taste in everyone's mouth just about. Thank god for DVD with the option to watch it how you want it. And don't even get me started on this "I"m a hardcore otaku who only watches SUB anime" crap.

*sigh*

Yea, i'm an anime dork. So sue me.

Hell yes I watch anime....

These are my favorites....

Ranma 1/2 - One of the funniest shows I ever saw, animated or otherwise. Happosai can be a pain in the ass though, lol. It is a long series and expensive to purchase the whole thing.

Big O - I normally don't care for a lot of drama but this show is incredible and very thought provoking. R. Dorothy is the best android since Data.

Project A-Ko - Old school anime that I just got into. Very good and A-Ko can kick huge amounts of ass.

Strawberry Eggs - Not the typical anime show I like, this is a story of a man who wants to teach but has to pass himself of as a woman. Despite that set-up the hijinks you might think would take place are kept to a minimum. It is a bittersweet story about a man doing whatever he can to do the job he loves and is well done.

Goldenboy - OMG you have GOT to see this to appreciate just how funny Kintaro Oe is! He always gets into so crazy situation with beautiful women and always manages to help everyone he comes in contact with. Great show.

FLCL - This is worth seeing just for the animation techniques and stylization alone. The story is good but it helps to watch more than once to understand what is going on.

Samurai Champloo - Samurai's, swords, and the music. Just watch it on Adult Swim and enjoy...

Cowboy Bebop - I don't think this needs much introduction. This show IMO made Adult Swim (the anime part anyway).

Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture - My favorite anime film of a videogame. This show is just damn good. A story involving Terry, Andy and Mai trying to stop a man named Laocorne from acquiring the all-powerful Armor of Gaudemus. Great story and action.

I am also a fan of Rurouni Kenshin, Cutey Honey, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Dirty Pair, and Devil Hunter Yohko.....

Oh god, how could I forget to mention Golden Boy (another PERFECT dub), Original Dirty Pair (Flash SUCKS!!!!), A-Ko, Slayers, Ranma, Cutey Honey, KOR, Here is Greenwood, frikking Gunbuster (though the sequel kinds sucks so far) and tons of others. I must be slipping in my old age.

I agree with you about the dub thing ryoga79. I personally would rather hear a good dub than read a screen and miss the animation. With DVD's I always watch dub first and THEN I may go to sub just to get that experience as well.

Yeah I started enjoying dubs with Cowboy Bebop... I prefer a good dub to subs anyday.

FLCL
Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion
Lain
Trigun
Gundam 08th MS Team
Gundam Wing
Tenchi
Outlaw Star
Mononoke
Big O

are some that I've enjoyed. Before Adult Swim I was stuck buying really expensive tapes and DVDs, I don't know why people hate AS so much.

Well, I'll watch subs anyday of the week (especially for Kenshin because I loath his dub voice), but I hate when people trash dubs as "ALL DUBS SUCK!" And then I name off some good dubs out, and it's always "Well, I haven't seen that show..blah blah blah." Of course, I'm partial to hell with the studio I worked for (not just the stuff I did).

Personally, I love what they did with Giant Robo, giving you the option to have the OLD dub as well as the new one on there to listen to, as they are drastically different. I happen to like the new dub, but I hate hate hate the new Akira dub. Gimme back my Leonardo, dammit!!!!

I was a fansub guy back when we had to send off $20 to some guy out of state, wait 2 months for 3 VHS tapes, and pray they were watchable. I think I have close to 300 or 400 vhs tapes that are JUST fansub, then a good 150 MASTER vhs tapes, I think about 100 or more Master dvds, crap I've downloaded, etc.etc.etc.

You kids today. Why, I remember when $34.95 bought you a subbed vhs tape of Ranma with TWO episodes on it. that's right, TWO.

I remember those days too. That was why I only had the first 4 episodes on VHS and never bought anymore.

No, you should have been like my buddy Nando who lives in Japan. Follow this math:

FLCL = 6 ovas
Japan puts ONE ova on 6 dvds
6 dvds x $60 us = $360 for FLCL with I think only dvd1 subbed, and the rest RAW.

So yea, the price for FLCL here sucks, which is why I have yet to buy it on Reg1 dvd, but it could be worse.

Of course, I have season 1 of One Piece on raw VHS, which cost me enough money. lol.

Well, Japanese DVDs are always more expensive (cost of living etc) and are pretty much ALWAYS made for a Japanese audience hence why they don't get multiple language and subtitle options like we do.

Yea, I know. When we do find reg2 japanese dvds with english subs (like Versus), we're on it like stink on shit. But, my point was US otaku bitch about prices when they have it alot worse over in the land of creation. But, i guess I'm beating a dead horse and making my arms sore.

My watching habits are Comedy Central, Spike/FSN, and Cartoon Network. CC for stand up and Daily Show, (South Park too when it makes a comeback every decade), ooo man how I wish I could say Kid Notorious, damn the batage that took that off the air, as well as Tough Crowd. On Fox Sports Net I watch TNA, on Spike I get WWE, and Cartoon Network for more humorous shows (Home Moives/ Mayor) and Anime. Would say UPN too, but thanks to my new job haven't been able to catch SmackDown! for the past month, have to keep downloading it onto my ever decreasing HD.

I would consider myself a casual viewer of anime. My favorites are Guu and Magic User's Club, but I like Naruto and One Piece as well.

I think some of Studio Ghibli's stuff has had decent dubs. I saw a sneak preview of Howl's Moving Castle, and most of the dubbing was actually pretty good (Christian Bale = Howl = ).

Me, I'll buy a reg1 dvd if I like the series so I can support the industry. What gets me are people who rave on and on about how much they like a series and never ever buy the dvds. If it's too expensive, then save up or shop around. I think about 25% of my dvd collection is used stuff that I have gotten at steal prices (Blue Sub 6 3disk collector's edition = $4.99 used at GS, Big O season 1 boxset = $7.99 used at GS, Moldiver collection = $4.99 used at GS, etc.), or stuff that I've gotten at Best Buy or other places cheap (Azumanga Daioh 2-5, Giant Robo 1-3, Greenwood collection, Dai-Guard Perfect Collection...ALL new All under $10 a volume at BB). And the Essential Anime line by ADV is a cheapass otaku's dream come true (8 or 9 eps for $12.99 @ BestBuy).

I'll resort to HK dvds if I know the show will NEVER get a US release (like Macross 7 or Street Fighter 2 with the far far FAR superior Japanese audio track).

Hell, alot of my Master VHS tapes I got for $10 or less at the comic shop I used to frequent, so getting an anime collection off little money CAN be done.
