Donkey Kong Country™ Returns: Out Now!

Looks good. My fiance and I enjoyed playing through New Super Mario Bros Wii, which had a better difficulty curve than Little Big Planet. The older DKC games were 2 player, just not simultaneously (like SMB 3)?

They were co-op OR head to head if my memory serves me correctly.
Honestly the only thing I'm bummed about is the lack of Kremlings. It's a small complaint but I've been waiting 14 years for this.
I too am upset with the lack of Kremlings.

WOG!

1up has a new short preview but most importantly a video showcasing the badass that is Rambi. Man I really can't wait for this game to come out already. The box art for this game is also incredible. The Donkey Kong Country games are still awesome to go back and play, its incredible how well they hold up.

Can't wait for this. Still torn about where I'll be buying it from though--although I didn't expect it I was really hoping for a $10 or $20 credit from Amazon for this, like Other M. Since Amazon wouldn't get it to me until Tuesday/Wednesday anyways (damn Sunday releases), I'll hold off until the Sunday ads come out in case there's some good looking deals.

I'm sure it'll be great. I just hope it's not missing its charm like DK64 or DK Jungle Beat. DKC for SNES is probably my favorite game ever.

The biggest issue for DKCR seems to be that in order to roll, slam the ground and have DKCR breathe you have to shake the Wii Remote.

Also, Nintendo Power gave it an 8.5 claiming that it was more difficult than NSMBW and that coop made it much more difficult.

Weak.

How does coop make a game harder?

In Kirby it sure does. Gotta battle the camera system. GRR :bomb:

The difficulty in co-op comes when you are bumping into the other player (in NSMBW). Playing it single player right after you play multiplayer makes this obvious. I don't know if DKCR is using the same idea.

Yet GameInformer gave it a 9.5.

I was shocked. A Wii game not getting docked for just being a Wii game?

But yes, I can completely understand how co-op makes things harder. Dunno how many times I "accidentally" killed someone in Co-op.

Just a heads up, if you ordered it at Amazon, it's $44.44 now. I got my order adjusted so I'm getting $12.xx off between my credit and Gold Box discount :)

Thanks for the heads up!

Sadly, I had to cancel me pre-order once I found out that this was being released on Sunday. I couldn't wait!

This is what I sent Feedback GI after reading their review:
"I am absolutely speechless. DKCR, 9.5 !?
Not only did Game Informer give a Nintendo game, a review score higher than 9.2.
Game Informer, gave that same Nintendo game "Game of the Month" status; which
beat a Call of Duty game for that honor.
Absolutely speechless."

All kidding aside, I have been excited for DKC 4 since E3. The fact that Retro Studios is developing the game only sweetens the deal.
Kmart here I come.
I only wish Nintendo called the game Donkey Kong Country 4. I know it's not a sequel, some critics/reviewers are calling it a remake???
If GI gives DKC 4 a 9.5, then everyone else must handing out "10s", ;p !!!
Well NSMBW wasn't that hard with friends.
NSMBW was a cake walk friends or no friends. If anyone who grew up playing the original series found anything in NSMBW even remotely challenging, then you probably didn't really play the original series. That was what ultimately disappointed me about NSMBW was that the game was way too easy, to the point where playing it seemed like a chore rather than something I was enjoying. Of course I didn't play it multiplayer, and I hear it was better with friends, but personally I think that's bullshit.

I am however very much looking forward to this after reading the reviews that claim that this game is a real challenge.

Every now and then there was a level in NSMBW that gave me some trouble, and I can see why people find that game challenging. I found that game to be a pretty decent challenge, and I have quite a bit of experience with these types of Mario games. I'm glad to hear that this game is going to be a challenge.

Having said all of that, this post I quoted smells horribly......I think I can smell the elitism from here.

Perhaps I am being a bit elitest, but you're talking to someone who came from an era where we had games like Battletoads and Blaster Master that were legitimately difficult, not like games today that are made artificially challenging through lazy programming.

For me, as far as Mario games go, if it's not any more difficult than the special Star Road levels in in Super Mario World, than it's not difficult at all. I loved the DKC games because they were always hard, but they were fun. You felt challenged, not cheated, which is a huge problem many games that claim to be difficult have today.

For example when I play Dead Rising 2, and all of a sudden get bum rushed by 10 Zombies all at once or a boss fight I didn't know was coming, and I didn't get the opportunity to save and lose 2 hours of gameplay, I feel cheated. When I die playing something else due to tricky level designs or enemy patterns that take a while to figure out and master, I feel challenged.

I thought NSMB was super hard with 3 other people. It was a fair challenge alone, not too hard and not too easy (this includes getting all the coins). I found the second to last level especially challenging. Honestly Spmahn you come off like a snob, just have fun... if you need the game to be more difficult try to get through it without getting hit. Bam! Instant difficulty spike.

A lot of reviews have come in. It looks like the only complains are an occasional motion control related death...

...and some people criticized the difficulty. Seriously, stop reviewing the game right after you are done yelling at it. I can't tell you how many times I get mad a game, think that it sucks, only to cool off and realize how good of a game it really is.

My only question, and I havent really read any reviews in depth, is how much does the game use the motion controls? If I had any other complaints about Mario Brother Wii, it was that the motion controls were not needed and hindered the gameplay. I understand, it's the Wii, and that's the gimmick, but Nintendo shojkd really give it up except in the case of games that are specifically designed for it.

Rolling, stomping on the ground, and "blowing".

They could have gotten away without using any motion controls, and it probably would have been better for it.

That being said, it is not like you are jumping by shaking the Wii remote. I'm expecting to die a couple times because of the shaking, but I won't let it ruin the experience.

I completely agree with you. The main reason I die in NSMB, is because of the motion controls in the game. I fear the same will be true in DKR, but I guess we will just have to deal with it. The only games I have had a problem with so far are NSMB and NBA Jam.

I kind of liked how the controls worked with the wiimote and nunchuk in the Mario Galaxy games since you could tell they were designed for those games. I was disappointed when I heard that the classic controller couldn't be used for DKCR since that controller is almost identical to the SNES controller. I just think it would have been cool to use the classic controller for this game since it would have been almost exactly like using the SNES controller.

I still can't wait to play this game. I just hope that the controls work well and don't feel like they are hampering the experience at all.

For me at least turning the Wii remote sideways feels pretty natural and a lot like a classic Nintendo controller anyway. If I had to use the nunchuck I'd be upset, but thankfully we don't.

This game is amazing... looks amazing on my large HDTV (NSMB and other Wii games tend to look jaggy... DKCR does not, looks incredibly smooth), plays great, sounds great and I've only done the first handful of levels but they have been top notch.

Nintendo needs to give Retro more franchises to work with. First Metroid, now Donkey Kong... that team is amazing.

Also, the motion controls are extremely responsive and I have yet to have a problem with them.

since you have the game, do you hear in the music a metroid vibe? I was on another board and they said that some of the music clips sounds like it came from the Prime series.

VGM out...

I'm still on the first world but everything has been remixes of old DKC tunes so far.

Just got an email mine shipped via ENSENDA (never heard of it) and it is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Very nice for Amazon to get it to me tomorrow though I won't be home until Tuesday night.

I have Prime FWIW.

Oh, and if Amazon puts a VG credit a few days after like they did with Kirby, I will send an email complaining. I shouldn't be penalized for placing an order over a month ago.

I've gone through the first two worlds...and I am loving every second of it. It's been slightly challenging at spots, but nothing too difficult.

The only problem I have is, yes, the motion controls. 99% of the time they work perfect. The problem lies in the fact that if you are standing still and shake the wiimote, you pound the ground, and this is how you get a lot of collectibles. If you are moving and shake the wiimote, you roll. Well, if you are like me and tend to hold the run button throughout the whole game, your character doesn't always stop instantly, which has led to me rolling clear off small platforms for no reason. I'll admit, if I slowed down I probably wouldn't have these things happen, but that is not how I roll. :)

Have you also been doing
the special levels that open by getting the 4 letters in each stage? I found the World 1 special stage was quite tricky, especially getting all the puzzle pieces.
