Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - For Liquid Metal we would Slime!
Yeah, that's English grammar and you'll see a ton of that that kind of grammar, phrases, and even some other dialects in Zere that seem to either be Scottish or Irish that makes it kind of hard to read.

I understand keeping an English flavor to the dialog and all that, but it should still be grammatically correct for each region rather than just doing one version for the UK and using it in the US, too.
I wouldn't say it's "bad" localization. I spoke with the guys who loc tested DQM Joker and they all caught it, but when they submitted them as bugs, the developers insisted they maintain it like that.

I hate that.

I hate how everyone has an accent too. wtf.

I picked up the Deathtamoor map at Comic Con. I haven't beaten the game yet though, so when I fought him he just hit every character for 300 and they all died.

I'm fine with the accents, though they don't have the ability for voice acting to back it up like in DQVIII. So it can be a bit hard to read some of the thicker accents that they try a bit too hard to emulate.
Is there a list somewhere or was it just trial and error for you? I have all of them up to Gale Fource on my Sage already.
I know Atlas is weak against Life Fource, which will double your damage done to him. Other ones I've somewhat forgotten, but I do know weaknesses are listed in the bestiary at gamefaqs.

Easiest way is to turn in 80 mini medals total and then you open up the ability to buy them for 15 mini medals a piece. The three enemeis that drop them are high level grottos only, one of which is a boss. Not to mention they are the rare 1/256 drop.

This. I got my 3rd piece this way last night and used it for Erdrick's Helmet. It doesn't take that long to get mini medals doing runs on Legacy bosses, which drop them every time and also hold them to steal.

Speaking of Legacy bosses, do you know when you're supposed to open up new legacy maps? I got Baramos up to Level 21 last night and still haven't gotten another one.

He starts being able to drop it at level 16 with a 10% chance. That increases by 5% every so many levels up until 91-99 which is a 40% chance. The following legacy boss map is the same, but not the one after that.

Got it. Is there a chart somewhere? I've figured out that he's dropping that Alihan outfit, and the piece he drops seems to change every 10 levels. I've also managed to get 4 Silver Orbs off of him so far.

The post-game is sounding more and more like an MMO to me, with lewt hunts and hard bosses.

I don't know how much of the post game I'll be playing. I'm at the last dungeon right now, and many of the enemies are pretty hard. I'm trying to level up my Sage now though, and I have to have the paladin use whipping boy for the Sage to have any chance of survival.

I'd say that's an apt comparison. I personally think it's worth it, but I guess it depends whether loot grinding in a single player game appeals to you (it does to me).

Sweet, I finally got a map with Metal King Slimes! Honestly didn't think I'd come across them in this map since it was a Copper map. Killed two my first fight and gained 60k exp per character, wheee.

Map was a level 49 Copper Waterway of Woe. Found'em on floor 9.

I really want to unlock Sage. Just unlocked Gladiator and trying to figure out a good lead in to it, with appropriate stats and such. Not sure on it's magic use, but I may work on Priest/Mage before getting a Gladiator going.

With that said, I'm enjoying just running around right now. Going after the 3rd fig, I think. Just got the
Thief's key and am back tracking with it.
. Can't wait to get my own
boat

Gladiator's magic is essentially non-existent. My level 59 Gladiator has 25 MP. They are strictly a physical damage class. The best lead in IMO is to max out the shield skill in another class, since equipping a shield on a Gladiator really rounds out the character.

And a word of warning, you're a LONG way from unlocking Sage, it can't be done until the very end of the game (and is easier to do in post-game).

Draekon, would you say there's any percentage in leveling up Legacy bosses beyond where they give new loot? For example, I have Baramos at 21, at which point he can drop both the new map at 10% and a Silver Orb at 6%. Now it will take more fights to get the map for sure, but it seems to me with him I'm better off just fighting him again and again at this level until I get the map and keeping the EXP. On the other hand if I keep leveling him, all I'm giving myself is a harder fight for a slightly better chance at the same loot, and no EXP.

The only point would be accolades or difficulty since his loot doesn't really change in my opinion. After a certain point it's probably worth it as it ups the chance of the orb drop, but if you're struggling I would say don't bother leveling the legacy boss for a while.

I must have meant Armamentalist.

I'm not struggling with him at all, once I figured out a strategy for him he's not that tough. Just think at this point I'd rather take the experience over the marginal increase in loot drops. Speaking of which, I discovered that the Thief's Theory book DOES have a chance of stealing orbs from legacy bosses as well, though it's only happened for me once.

For serious. I've found a map with a large number of LMS, but still no Metal Kings (I've given up finding them in the Tower of Nod).

I've now unlocked armamentalist, paladin, gladiator, and ranger.

I changed one of my characters to a ranger and maxed his boomerang skill to 100. I then changed his class to gladiator, warrior, and monk for the Strength upgrades and he hits absurdly high - even with a paltry 30 damage boomerang.

I like boomerangs.. they're sexy awesome.

Edit: I just got to Gleeba, yet I've leveled 5 different classes to above 20! I'm way too addicted to skill points.. by the end of the game, I swear I'm going to have every class at level 25 at least.

Wow. Reading your other posts I assumed you were way ahead of me, but I just got there last night myself. My main guy is I think level 20 Minstrel and level 21 Armamentalist, and the others are all level 26 or 27 in only one class each (Martial Artist, Priest, and Thief). You must be grinding out of your mind.
You should mail him your DS and ask him to tag it for you.
Hah. He should be hitting Metal King Slimes soon enough seeing as he's put about as many hours into the game as I have.

I've gotten a few level 40+ maps in a row now, but still nothing useful to me. I did find an FAQ that purports to list every monster combination you can find in the grottos, so it helps to decide which map I should bother going through if I have a choice.

ooh there's japanese downloadable saves with good maps on them...

i was considering buying a 2nd copy of the game so i can play with my brother...
You must be grinding out of your mind.
I realize that there are better and faster ways to level up if I was just patient and waited for the better metal enemies to fight, but I've been doing much of my grinding just going around picking up alchemy stuff and killing metal medleys in the bad cave while doing other things. Yesterday, I played DQ9 for a few hours while playing Dokapon kingdom with friends and watching Buffy/Angel on Netflix with my wife - Grinding doesn't require much attention, and for some reason I have a lot of fun doing it.

My highest classes are at 32.. Monk, warrior, priest, mage. I mis-read where the paladin quest guy was, though, so I was hunting all over the world for it before I realized it was *IN* gleeba... Now that I have paladin, I changed back to all level 1 characters again: Paladin, Priest, Warrior, Armamentalist. I think that because of all the extra attack and HP from the skill points I've allocated, I can start fighting in the bad cave from level 1 If I wanted to. As soon as I get sage unlocked, I plan to do it again for perhaps the final time.

It's kind of nice to have level 1 characters with 100 HP, 90 attack, and 200 spellpower with no equipment on.

Thanks for mentioning that, as I was able to beat him (4000 damage from 100 tension, Life Fource, Double Up, Falcon Slash) in the second map I came upon him - just after I lost my Priest, which would have screwed me if I needed one more turn.

On back to the other map I lost to him in. Maybe that one will offer me a level 50 map. But I've discovered that apparently losing to a boss of a map erases your exploration progress, which is dumb.

I have a feeling if I want to play too much more of the postgame I'll probably need to max out Paladin with my Ranger and second Sage/future Luminary. The difference it makes with my Priest is amazing.

Baramos is holding onto this map like a stubborn child. You think by now he'd be tired of me kicking his ass and want me to move on to Murdaw. I've beaten him 16 times now since he's been able to drop it, during which time he's coughed up 3 Silver Orbs but no sign of the damn map. :bomb:

Beginning to think about whether it's worth leveling him up to 26 to get that extra 5% chance at the drop.

Edit: So does anyone know whether they're planning to continue releasing 1 quest a week in linear order? (just guessing based on us getting 121 and 122 so far). If that's the case, I should look forward to getting the Rusty Armor to complete my set (Quest 178), umm.. August 2011. I'm guessing they might mix it up some (releasing the X-mas quest around then, etc) so I really hope I don't need to wait that long to get all the content.

We got one wi-fi quest the first week and two the second, so we're up to 123. Can only hope they release more than one a week.

Another note, I've got my party over level 70 now on their current vocation and still will level a bit further. I won't level fresh low level vocations there as they'd die very quickly and easily, but the leveling is fairly good once you have a decent amount of health and defense.

Been Leveling up m guys in the Palace and it's slow but good.
If I fight 3 Wight Kings i get around 1200 Exp which is not bad.
Im seen MSM in the Lv13 Treasure map but I do this, since theres the healing pad right next to it.

My guys are

Minstrel- 39 Sword maxed with Uber Miracle Sword and working on Shield next.
May turn him into Gladitor when I max shield for the added defense boost.

Martial Artist- 41 Staff Maxed with Ballistick, doing his focus now.

Mage- 39 Wand maxed with Magical Mace, knife and spellcraft next

Priest- 39 Staff maxed with Ballistick, faith and shield next.

I maxed the Staff but the teacher won't teach me the ultimate move.
Also if your trying to do the Martial Artist Lv 40 quest, he gets better Crit Hits if he uses Psyche Up or gets Egged On to raise his tension.

Doing my guys to level 40 learn their ultimate skill then Its on to the Palace and look for Sage.

What do you know, the reverse jinx worked! Only took about 4 more battles for him to give up the map. Good thing too, because he'd just learned Hellfire, I'm glad I won't need to see what that does. :D

Edit: Well, Murdaw is a LOT tougher than Baramos. Time to grind a bit more while I formulate a new strategy.

I think if you go back to Alltrades and talk to the bishop far to the north another couple times he'll say something about Jack eating a fruit; you do some talking to people downstairs, talk to the bishop on the first floor again, and then you learn to bow (party trick) and you can open up the tower directly east of Alltrades.

Finish the tower, and you can then change classes in Alltrades.

edit: I didn't talk to the bishop more than the once until AFTER I beat the Leviathan. I'm not sure if you can only change vocation after that or not.

So I started reading about maps. I still haven't beaten the game, but I just got to the palace and I'm only level 30ish with my main classes.

Anyway, turns out that there are several famous maps in Japan, one of them is the "Masayuki" map which is the first map discovered that had an all MKS floor. There's also a map called "Kawasaki Locker" which was first discovered and then transferred at the Kawasaki Train Station Lockers, which has a lot of good drops.

There's a JPN save for download, which I can use to download on my flashcard and then tag to my DS. I'm tempted to do it, but it feels like cheating. But it also sucks because I know no one that would have those maps. Hell, I don't know anyone who plays.

Ahhhhh moral dilemmas!

I'm in the same boat as you.. I know one other person who'll have the game, and thats it.

Japan is an entirely different animal than here, and the DQ9 connectivity was obviously designed for a densely populated country where they sell 9 million copies of the game.

In the US, it just doesn't work that way. I wouldn't consider using your flash cart to transfer the maps to yourself (considering you purchased the game proper anyway) cheating so much as creatively overcoming an unfair limitation that only exists because you don't live in Japan.

Just beat m second Grotto, Nemean. Took awhile but he didn't have strong moved when I used Omph and Buff. Though he didn't drop anything. At least Eqinox dropped a Dragontail whip

Now that my party has their current vocation at around mid to high 70's, I think I should go back and finish vocation grinding to learn every vocations skill that specific to that vocation for stats and what not. Would probably help immensely and allow me to take on just about anything.

Okay so I found the bookcase for the Sage, anyone know where I can find some Great Trolls. Wanna make m Priest a Sage now. I know my Mage can take down the troll with her Frizzle.

There are 3 places they can be found:

1. The Realm of the Mighty (the last dungeoun)

2. The high ground west of the plains only accessible by flight

3. Some mid-level grottos

I considered this too, but in the end I think it'll be more rewarding for me to get all the gear I'm going to get for myself, even if it means I never get every piece of top-end gear. Stumbling by chance across a great weapon or crafting piece, to me, is way more rewarding than doing something to guarantee that I'm going to get it.

What's your guys best weapon.
Very happy with my Uber Miracle Sword and Ballisticks I had way b4 you can buy the preform at Upover.

Bout to fight the final boss in the palace that Level up for the end.
Hopefully Ill unlock the sage after the palace boss.

Luminary!

25 maps down, unlocked it with the Gold Nest of Reget, level 54. I will probably try to play around with that class a bit as I move through some more dungeons, but that will probably be it. First I have to finish maxing out my Virtue traits with my Ranger and Sage-becoming-Luminary.

Got to the last boss, and got whipped because my priest ran out of MP.

My guys are: Paladin 39, Martial artist 42, Priest 40, Armamentalist 39

I was lucky enough to get ZIng to work the first time like 5X in a row.
Any tips? Are my levels high enough?

I think I was around those levels when I fought him, but I had some trouble too. Just give it another shot once you've figure out his tendencies. Unless you use the timing list, maps don't guarantee you're going to get anything.

There might be something special about it (Gemslimes for Gold, MKS for EXP), but for the most part it's just monster spawns and treasure spawns. No guarantee anywhere.

I launched an LMS map and I got my ass kicked. That's what I get for using my level 17 classes. Either way the monsters were too hard >_

This DQVC thing is starting to feel like a farce to me. You'd think that in two weeks of checking it every day I would have gotten anything more substantial than a bunch of Mini Medals (which are easy to get in the post-game anyway) and crafting ingredients which you can literally pick up off the ground. Two weeks without a single piece of equipment more exciting than an agility ring makes the daily checking more of a chore than a pleasure. I'm not asking for a Metal King Sword or anything, but the occasional Lucida Shard would look good at this point.

/rant

Lucida Shards are pretty easy to make, but do take a little bit of time to make a significant amount. I would prefer something a little more difficult.

And wow, being level 80 and beating down on a low level Baramos is... amusing. No matter the strategy I use, he dies in five turns and can't even crit-kill me anymore. My Paladin has 600+ health now and around 550 defense. It's almost unfair... almost.

I assume it will get better. I notice it always says something about how it's "alchemy week" at the store, so I'm hoping once that "week" is over the items won't be so ingredient-centric.
