Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - For Liquid Metal we would Slime!

This week shop is focused around "Slime Sale" (Stuff like Slime Crown and Slime Shield).

Two new quests, one of which is a story quest like every other wi-fi quest so far.

Last, we received another visitor accessible via the elevator. Be sure to talk to him for a piece of equipment like the last visitor.

It's Slime Week in the store, but I had no slime items. This is the first time my store sucked so bad I didn't buy anything.
Yeah, but you can switch to other weapons during a battle (something I do quite often), so I assume the intent there is that you don't forget what other skills you have access to. To me its worth the seconds. :D
bv,

Dumb question, but how do you transfer other weapons into your characters inventory? Items are easy enough, but weapons don't appear.

You don't need to. Any weapon you currently own can be equipped at any time in battle as long as that class can use it. Which is a very very good system IMO.

Got some Gooey Gear from my shop today. It's worse than everything I'm wearing, but I bought it anyway. Hopefully it has some cool use, or can be alchemized into something good. Shop also had a slood but I had already made one so I didn't buy it.

Does anyone else think the DQVC should read your character level, etc before populating your shop? It would be way more useful for people deep into the endgame who almost never get anything worthwhile from the shop.

Edit: Mine today at least had some Brighten Rocks and Evencloth, which are two of the most used alchemy ingredients.

So it's Angelo today, huh? I kind of wish I'd had access to the guests back when their equipment wasn't so far below what I'm using now, because his stuff looks damned cool. Got three pieces of equipment from him, his armor, trousers for talking to him as a Priest, and his hair because it's my birthday (well, tomorrow is actually, but I guess the game thinks it's close enough).

I didn't know that you could get more than one piece from the guests...

I only got the dress from the last one (I forget her name.. but remember shes from DQ4). What class would I switch to to get something extra from her?

Martial Artist IIRC

Interesting, I didn't know that either. I only got the dress from Alena and the armor from Angello. Actually, my male paladin was using Alena's dress (it's unisex for some reason) and he just switched to Angelo's armor since it's slightly better. I had temporarily changed my priest to warrior to get extra skill points - I'll have to talk to him again once I switch back.

Got my 4 Goddess rings, grinded up to level 80-ish last night, and I beat the crap out of Deathtamoor this morning!

However, I have yet to get a single rare drop from any grotto boss.

Gonna try to get everyone up to level 99 before switching off classes to what I plan to main them as. I'm thinking Hero as Priest or Sage, then 2 gladiators and a Paladin or even 3 gladiators with Uber Falcons. Once I get those classes up to level 99, gonna start revocating...

I need more saint's ashes though, having trouble alchemizing because of it. I do have a lot of reset stones and orichalcum though.

one thing that i found out if you tag with a japanese person...

your name becomes "eigo" (which means english)
and your profile says something like
"i'm eigo. i am xx years old and i live in north america."
"hi i can speak english. if you can speak english you can talk to many people!"

the japanese person gets to retain their name.
"hi i'm xxxxxx. i am xx years old and i come from far away."
"hello! i am from Japan! nice to meet you!"
You can buy them from the Cap'n for 8 Mini Medals a pop, which if you've been doing lots of grotto grinding you should have plenty of.

OK, one more question. What triggers the quests you obtain via wifi and what do you mean by "story quests"? I have 5 or 6 quests listed that all have ???? by them and I think two are "story quests". I think all of those showed up when I connected to the Wifi for the first time last week.
Got some Gooey Gear from my shop today. It's worse than everything I'm wearing, but I bought it anyway. Hopefully it has some cool use, or can be alchemized into something good. Shop also had a slood but I had already made one so I didn't buy it.
My main char has been rocking the Gooey Gear (along with a slime head for the total stacked slime look ;)) for a while. It is by far the best gear I've gotten yet - I alchemized it a while back, actually (when my chars were level 15 or so). Now I'm around 30 and it is still the best stuff I have along with that Alena's dress dealie I got from the Wifi last week. So I have to talk to her as an MA to get something else?

Also - I'm still waiting for input from you guys on the "fashion show" quest. What am I suppoed to do to finish that one?

For those of you with maxed out Quester's Rests, you can get a pair of gloves from the guest characters. I'm early in the game, so the stuff from the guests is very helpful.
check gamefaqs for info on quest
also recipes for better armor and weapons
I didn't want to see spoilers on Gamefaqs though. I'm trying to play this one with minimal help - just a few questions here and there for you guys ;). As for weapons/armor, I'm making only what I can find recipes for - not gonna cheat and make other stuff I don't know about yet.

Edit - Just connected with the DQVC. I got the notice about the slime sale but I also just had regular crap in my store. I did talk to Angelo and get the Templar's Togs which beat any armor I currently have. So now my hero looks pretty goofy with that, the white tights, and a slime head ;).

I also went back to Alena as a MA and got the tights from her - but they were worse than other stuff I had already.

Upgrading some armor now and Grotto hunting.
Did find a Soccerror's Stone in a blue chest, best find so far though I haven't used it.

Kainzero- try half inch on
Genie sanguini, Sculptrice, Seavern
they may each have a chance of hold Saint's Ashes.

Also if you guys see Slime Crown in your store buy them. They are helpful when making the King's robes and King Axe. Queens Robes are next for me.

The fashion quest you need stuff that says dashing in the titles.
It can vary for some ppl. I think i used Rapier, Platinum Shield, Star Suit and things like that.

We went to the event at like 2:30 PM, got 4 tags and the Estark map. Nintendo rep said that there were like 20 people in the first hour but then it died out (we were doing errands then..). Still got a free shirt, poster, and stickers. I'm sure people got a kick out of my husband's 400+ hours on the clock, and the fact he had the Japanese version. All of his tags got their names changed to "Eigo" (English in Japanese), and he was known to the tags as "esuteru" (Estelle is his character's name, got changed basically into the katakana pronunciation of it).

Made it to the event today and grabbed a shirt, the map, and another twenty tags or so (up to almost sixty!), with a few people sending along maps they'd gotten. Now I've just gotta raid a local mall in the next few weeks...

Went to the event at Mall of America in MN, and the guy doing it didn't know what the fuck he was doing, and would only give out T-shirts if you bought the game. He was only there to pimp selling stuff. I did get like 13 tags and the Estark map though. It was the party slime T-shirt. Oddly enough, I don't see any of them on flea bay - only the blue ones.

If anyone gets extra Poster / t shirts or any swag the dont want i will pay for the shipping.
Please and thank you.

I ended up making it to my event and they tried the same thing, but since I was there before the event started and stayed there all day they gave us shirts when it ended. This event was worse than at GS, it was basically me and two other guys that were at the GS event, and then a few stragglers during the afternoon. I only got 2 more maps including the NOA4 one, and about 4 more unique tags. We stood around and played multiplayer all afternoon while waiting for other people to show though, so I levelled up some. It was still fun!

I probably should have stayed a little longer. Oh well, maybe I'll luck out at the Maplewood Simons mall event in a couple weeks.

The Best Buy event was a bit of a wash. I did get a Party Slime Tshirt but only a couple tags. I hung around for a bit hoping for more people. I don't think they advertised this, the store staff didn't even know it was happening when I had asked about it earlier in the week.
I have 27 tags. Hopefully there will be more events in the future and I can get more.

There's a pretty good crowd at the Blossom Hill Best Buy still. A few people are giving out the metal king treasure map, and there's a t-shirt raffle.

my best buy (like my gamestop last week) failed at actually having the download set up. so its 0/2 for me so far at these events. last week at least they gave me a shirt though.. damnit.

Did get in-n-out burger afterwords, so this week (like last weeks clam chowder) was not a total loss. ;)

Just scored 3 Saint's Ashes from the Genie Saigine's things.
Key is to not kill anything that comes with it, so it can't do the Kerplunk Dance

Making the Empress Robes to match my Empreor's robes for my Priest and Mage.
Baramos killed me. Damn him

Sounds kind of the opposite of what I saw today (in Salem, OR). I got there right at the start but the T-shirts were already gone (handed out freely to those getting there before it even started, apparently). They only had 10.

But, on the other hand, I went from only 5 tags from the GS event to 50 today! There was a pretty big crowd at the beginning so I went to 30 pretty quickly (to unlock the basement in the Inn) and was set to go but my 2 1/2 year-old wanted to look at other stuff. I just kept canvassing while he did that, and even though we were in different parts of the store, I got up to 49 by around 2pm. But at that point it was pretty empty, so I decided to run out and do the other thing I drove down there for and then come back before the end. When I got back it didn't appear there was anyone else there - the BB guy was standing by himself. But once again we looked around a bit and I picked up that last one needed for 50 - and I guess a new accolade which I am getting right now:

"Some might not agree with your methods, Cold Caller, but they sure do get results. That's fifty guests canvassed! Keep it up!". The award is "Cold Caller" of course ;).

Plus I got all of these maps:

- Zoma again - but beaten by someone!
- Estark of course (given by the NOA4 character)
- Baromas's Map (level 3)
- 2 x Granite Tunnel of Woe (the first one you get and which I beat last night so it was all I could hand out myself)
- Iron Mine of Joy (level 3) x 2 (2 maps from the same person... hmmmm...)
- Basalt Cave of Joy (level 4) (wait, this was what I got myself from beating the Granite Tunnel of Woe level 1)
- Graphite Mine of Woe (level 4) x 2 (also from the same person)
- Rock Mine of Doubt (level 8)
- Cooper Mine of Dolour (level 10)
- Clay Mine of Doubt (level 10)
- Graphite Crevasse of Dolour (level 12)
- Platinum Moor of Bane (level 45) x 2
- Platinum Mine of Fear (level 45)
- Platinum Path of Regret (level 55)
- Graphite Nest of Regret (level 56)
- Silver Crypt of Regret (level 66)
- Platinum Ruins of Dread (level 69)
- Diamond Nest of Bane (level 70)
- Steel Nest of Bane (level 77)
- Sapphire Nest of Ruin (level 99)

So, uh, yeah, I really don't understand what any of that means. Did I get anything good in there? ;)

Came in around 3 and there were no other DQ players there. Did get to talk to the rep who told that the most people he saw at one time was 5 people with their DSs. On the bright side, the rep was smart enough to hide the T shirts under the table and only gave them out to people who either bought the game or participated in the event.

got there at 3:15, no one there, the rep already left.

only tagged one other guy. had a crappy map with him.

all i got were stickers. and i bought another copy for my brother.

i find it funny how everyone still passes out masayuki. the map is outdated. =)

@io: none of those maps are particularly famous. but they might be good, i dunno.

io- the higher levels have better chances of A/S rank chest where you can find great stuff. Check this FAQ, no spoilers there, it will tell you what rank grotto your in.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/ds/937281-dragon-quest-ix-sentinels-of-the-starry-skies/faqs/60508

Also if you use the map thing you can figure out how good your map is. Just be careful cause higher level have stronger bosses.

I'm loving the shield skill 'Magic Mirror' It reflects all spells back. Helps me out a lot.
Used it while fighting Elusid and he was talking lots of damage. Thinkin of upgrading it to all my guys.
Id never have to worry about spells hitting me. And my Mage needs that as she doesn't take damage well.
Still need to change classes but I dont want to grind them up to higher levels again.

Wow, that's quite an accomplishment in a short time! Nice!!

I have to say, going through some of the grottos when we were playing multiplayer is alot of fun!! I wish there were more people playing this game. I'm only up to 12 tags I think.

Is it the chests that give you the good stuff, or beating the boss?

My biggest problem with all those grottos is I have no idea where to find them (Edit - I see Gamefaqs has some maps showing at least some of the locations. I know one that I have is not shown there though). I wish you could look at the main map while also looking at the grotto map. I did manage to find one of the lower level ones. I also found one of the level 45 maps. That was pretty cool as it was full of monsters I hadn't seen yet. I made it down to about level 9or 10 before I ran out of MP and had to evac. But I was getting decent stuff from the chests - nothing too rare, but at least some alchemy ingredients I wasn't seeing too much of before. Is it just one of the blue chests that will give me the rare stuff (eventually)?

I did find a couple of metal king slimes on one of the levels. The first ones got away but I managed to kill one of the second group with a critical hit. 30,000 exp for my level 30-35 chars was quite a treat. They all jumped one level and one jumped 2 levels ;). I had not gotten any more than about 4-5K previously from one battle. But man, there were some normal monsters that I had a tough time with: Slugy Betty's or something? And one of the higher level moas.

Anyway, I spent a lot of time hunting down the grottos after I came home. But then I realized I better get back to the story. The problem was, I really had NO idea where to go. I had 6 fyggs and no apparent place to go. I finally found a new area (in the desert) and I think what I did was I went in the "wrong" order (though clearly the game lets you do so which I think is cool). I did the Swindimples and Batsurag (SP?) stuff before that and I think that was pretty much reverse order (I'm basing that on the order it put the towns in the Zoom list). The boss at Swinedimples was super hard after having a pretty easy time with bosses up to that point, so I think I probably wasn't supposed to do that for my 5th fygg. But oh well... The desert place was only accessible by boat and I had just missed it before. I thought I had already been on that landmass so I passed it by and went to the other stuff instead (first thing I did with the boat was to go to all the islands I could get to). So another minor complaint I have with the game is I wish the map would show town names so I know which continents I've explored when looking at the world map - it would also help in finding grottos since even when I see where they might be I'm never sure which town is closest.

But I do really want to know what is the deal with these grottos - so thanks for the link. I will check it out now. Edit - OK, read it and I am even more confused. I don't get all the rankings thing - does it show these ranks somewhere in the game, or am I supposed to figure it out by what monsters I see?

io- yes the blue chests is what gives you the good stuff.
Bosses have chances of dropping stuff.
Got 3 Dragontail whips from Equinox and 1 Miracle Sword from Shogum.

If you use this map http://ih.gyoruspy.com/SA/dq9_materials_e.jpg ou can zoom in and look up grottos. I have it saved as a favorite and printed out a copy.
Your next step is to head to Batsureg west of Swinedimples. then head west of Alltrades Alley.

Use the GameFAQs to Quest page to help you tell what ranl grotto your in by what monsters you fight.
Once you hit A and S that's when hopefully you find the good stuff.
I was confused at first too.
Its real simple.

If your map name is Sapphire Nest of Ruin.

1 Prefix- The first mineral type, like Clay, Gold and Sapphire tells you the rank of the monsters you will fight in the grotto ranging from rank 1-9
Clay being the easiest with 1-2 and Diamond being the hardest with 7-9. Spahhire is 7-9

2 Enviorment- The second world tells you the enviroment you will be in.
Whether its ice, water, ruins, cave or volcano. Also depending on the world you can tell how many floors it will be to the boss.

3 Suffix- The second word tells you the boss you may fight.

Read this little info page and it helps you out.http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/937281-dragon-quest-ix-sentinels-of-the-starry-skies/55674123

On a side note, I've almost got my group their first skill sets to 100. Only another level in their current classes, that carries skill points, and I'll be able to switch and work up another class. However, unless I feel like going back to Angel Falls and working my way through the areas, I think I'll be revocating them 1 at a time, until they close the level gap.

You probably don't need to go back all the way to Angel Falls, to be honest. With decent gear, you can start a whole slew of level 1's around Alltrade Abbey and go around from there. I tend to avoid the owls, though, because they seem to be metal and tend to take less damage with low strength characters. Quarantomb until around 15 (or until the Metal Slimes stop giving out a level/kill) then wherever else you may end up. Bam! 26 skill points.

I did Batsureg already - that was one of the out of order ones. So after the desert I'm not sure where I'll need to go.

What?

I had people with 100 in certain weapons before I even left the island where Alltrades is.

IMO during story mode, levels are way overrated.
The EXP it takes to get from 1-21 is the same as it is to get from 21-25.

Once you max out a weapon it is very easy to switch between classes and retain your damage. Then when you pile on the stat bonuses (especially Paladin's resilience, that is straight broken for story mode) it makes the game a lot easier.

----
This weekend I revocated my first classes =)
The +1 next to your name is pretty cool looking. Unfortunately I don't want them to be my main classes.
I'm aiming for these end game classes...
Main (Joseph) - Priest
(Priest has Omniheal and Healall, while Sage doesn't. Priest loses Kazing but I feel like you won't have time to resurrect someone at half life. At the very least he'll carry some Yggdrasil leaves.)
Nina - Warrior
(Warrior has better attack and resilience than the Paladin, but less MP)
Mina - Gladiator
(Gladiator is the ultimate attacker)
Kain - Ranger / Gladiator
(Gladiator when I need to kill, Ranger if I want to steal something)

Then I'll revocate the rest to my heart's content.

This. My levels are now 23, 31, 26, and 28. All of them have at least one Omnivocational weapon, and some are nearing another 80 skill points after putting some points in other things for quests and such.

Also, between 1-21 you get 42 skill points; at 25, you'll have a total of 52...so for the same amount of experience, you can either get 42 skill points or 10. (Hint: switch classes and get 42 instead of staying the same class to get 10.)

That said, what's a good skill to max to make switching classes easier after getting a weapon for each character (if it matters, I've got a Spear, Wand, Bow, and Axe. I think I may have shot myself in the foot [sorta] for getting Wands, because it's not really that helpful...yet)? kainzero looks to advocate the Paladin's Virtue for a total of +100 Resilience, +30 mending, and +80 HP...which...wow. I may just go with that. That or shields...but I'm thinking the Resilience would be better at the stage of the game I'm in. (I just landed in Wormwood.)

I have a bunch of naked guys running around collecting alchemy ingredients. At ~level 20 and with no armor, they're not having much trouble staying alive until some of the late game and post-game areas.

For grottoes I switch to some level 40 classes just to make things less stressful, and then I pop back over to my level 60 classes for grotto bosses. At this point I basically cycle through the 3 groups - look for ingredients and buy expensive equipment needed for recipes until I'm down to 100k in the bank, then hit up a grotto or two which generally nets me another 20-30k. Repeat.

Just about done maxing staves and axes. Still leaves me with spears, claws, fans, hammers and fisticuffs to go. Gonna be a while!
Virtue is pretty broken, but I think you should go with whatever roles you want them to play.

Maxing Gladiator's Rage gives you 60 points of strength, I think.
Maxing Priest's skill gives you a lot of Magical Mending, which turns Midheal from 60HP to like 120 HP.
Maxing Wizard's skill gives you like 180+ Magical Might, which actually makes your spells do some damage.
I also Maxed Sage for everyone because the extra MP and the reduced MP cost helps everyone.

I maxed out shield for the classes that didn't have a shield in the intended classes (Gladiator, for one). Eventually during post game, everyone should max it out.

I went pretty specialized for all of my initial trait maxing:

MC: Gladiator, Warrior, Paladin, Martial Artist (attacker)
2nd: Martial Artist, Ranger, Thief (speed)
3rd: Sage, Mage, Priest, Minstrel (mag. mending, MP)
4th: Sage, Mage, Minstrel, Armamentalist (mag. might, MP)

And Paladin for the others as well.
What exactly does Forbearance do?
Just curious.
I don't have it yet, but my understanding is that it's like whipping boy for the whole party instead of just one person.

Edit: Argh, beaten to it while typing.
