DS Redesign (real this time)

I like how it is much cleaner than the old DS, which looks like a ship out of Battlestar Galactica.

in English measurements. It is 5/8" less wide, 3/8" less tall, 1/4" thinner (1 1/8" vs. 7/8") -which is a big deal to me.

nice! i'm sure the screens will be brighter and have higher resolution.

also, it looks almost flat! That's awesome, cuz i hate the DS' convex shape.

I think they should reconsider that name. I know it doesn't matter for us responsible "know what we're buying before we buy it" gamers, but to the average gamer, calling something "Lite" makes it sound like you aren't getting as much.

Diet, Lite, Mini = Less
Special Edition, XL, Reloaded = More

I think they should call it the "Nintendo DS I havn't seen you since high school! You look GREAT!"

dang, I bought a DS not even two weeks ago! If they discontinue the old model, I wonder if I could use my 2-year service plan to get a new one later on??

It's not as drastic of a redesign as I was expecting but I'll probably cave and finally buy a DS now. It will give life to the few GBA games I haven't played in a while because of my PSP...

Hmmm....I think for the first time in awhile with Nintendo handhelds it will be a wait and see. I obviously like that it will be smaller. There are still a few questions I have or want to wait to see:

1. The screen....will it be more like the SP2? Hopefully no blurring?
2. D-Pad...I love the current DS one because it works well for SFII Turbo Revival where as the SP doesn't work well for me with that game. I hope the new d-pad isn't like the SP design. Maybe more like the micro?
3. Another color besides white? Maybe I don't know black?
4. New features (Will we get GB\GBC compatiblity? or any other new features?)

So I'm thinking I'll probably wait for a review to see what's up. I'm pretty happy with the DS as it is now and actually prefer it over the SP now so I think this is a harder sell for me.

The buttons and d-pad are an instant sell for me. I hate the current buttons on the DS and I find that I've been playing my Micro a lot more than the DS lately.

i think it's to attract that untapped female market. "Lite" is the spelling they use for fat free potato chips and other crap that girls eat.

ha ha! girls are stupid!

I'll have to see how the new buttons and D-pad feel before I take the plunge. I really like the new look although I never had a problem with the original design. What could really sell it for me is the brightness levels.

As someone else stated, I hope it doesn't have the blurring issues that come complain about on the SP2.

Damn the new buttons and their ergonomics. I just bought a DS . At least it's going to be released around a point where I'll have some more disposable income.

Well apparently we wont be seeing them in the near future over here (not for at least a few months after the JP launch) is what I've heard so far as they need to design new brackets for the thing.

Meh. Not enough of a difference for me to upgrade unless it basically winds up being a free upgrade. I'd rather have the bigger screen, and my hands are large so I like the current form factor of the DS.

Did they make the screen smaller? I don't see a confirmation of that anywhere.

No. The screen is the same size, they just trimmed the size of the chassis somewhat.

Maybe I'll wait for the DS Micro... you know it's coming eventually... Is the "Lite" the smallest they could make it without sacrificing screen size?
fuck! Looks like I'll be buying a DS for the fourth time.
Crap now I gotta buy another DS. That'll look great next to my ibook too.
You people are strange. You don't "got to" do anything. You're just >wasting< the money you >slaved< to earn. Keep the DS you have now & save your cash.

They might be able to make it slightly smaller, but I really don't think they will ever be able to make the screen size smaller do to the touch screen support. If you make the screen smaller, it makes the tip of the stylus contact a larger percentage of the screen. This could cause unfavorable results in a lot of games.

Right. They would have to make the stylus more needle-like to be playable. I might actually pick one of these things up. If it happened to play original GB/GBC games it would be a no-brainer but I have a feeling I'll always have to carry around my SP for some Tetris action. Lugging 3 handhelds everywhere I go plus my iPod, cell phone and blackberry is getting a bit out of hand...

They are truly the masters of taking your monies. They couldve forced you to buy more units by having the originals break down. But instead, they are going to 'convince' you to buy another one, and also that those arent the droids you're looking for.

nintendo is making tetris DS, so no need to carry your SP
My mistake, I took that picture in the OP to be the screen size, not the chassis size.

EDIT: NICE avatar, lebowsky. Chimay is some godly stuff.
Thanks, man. I have one sitting in my fridge right now ;) There is only one wine/beer shop that sells it near me. Luckily it is only about 10 mins away.

Unless it's an EXACT port of Tetris DX I'm probably not going to be interested...
Can't you just play that on your PSP? ;)
Probably, but you'd get to 30 lines and your power would run out.

/BUUUUUUUUUUUUURN

The start/select buttons seem a little close to the screen, but otherwise it's what I expected from Nintendo. Smaller and Ipod like. Can't wait to rub this in my friends faces! :) I kept saying I would wait for the redesign, and here it is!

Damn, that's true.... hmmm... I wonder if the controls will feel similar...

Dammit! I just bought my DS a couple of weeks ago. I like my red DS far more though--I'm just not into the white systems thing. The extra brightness is nice, but I the placement of the Start/Select buttons is weird. I wonder if that's the final design.

I wonder where they moved the Power button to. I have pressed that thing accidentely SO many times when I shift positions or whatever.

After it comes out, if you send in your old style DS (with a stuck or dead pixel or whatever) to NOA, would they send you a new style DS back or would you get a refurb old one or something? That is if they just don't repair them and send the same one back.

horray for nintendo. "revolutionarily" jacking your wallets one minor redesign at a time.
Typical hahaha

oh well I expected this crap from nintendo so I held off buying a DS for my girlfriend and voila!

You're not the only one.

There are going to give you the old style until there is no stock left. I wouldn't count on that as upgrade method. Besides, I'm almost certain that there has to be more than one problematic pixel. Dead/stuck pixels are just a feature of the technology. You have to have nine before Sony will exchange a PSP as with laptops and thier makers. Just the way it is.

Nope, one dead pixel = replacement.

Nintendo isn't making you buy the new DS - it will have the same functionality as the original - just smaller w/ a brighter screen.

I find it interesting how so many people who have bought a DS are actually excited about it and will give their old DS to loved ones. Few seem to be complaining, at least on CAG.

And to those who complain about Nintendo releasing too many iterations of Game Boys, that may be true. But I highly suspect that they will phase out the current DS style and replace it with the Lite. No reason to have two versions out.

haha this is my exact situation too. i'll get my g/f the white one.

I have a DS, but I am really excited about this one. I will be getting one.

I don't understand why anyone would be upset if they just bought a DS. It plays the same games. It does not make your DS any less fun.

I'm gonna have a hard time explaining why I get the nice new one, while she gets the hand me down... damn animal crossing...
