Dust voids PS3 warranty! Pics & Video included!

I don't understand how anyone can really think this is fake. There is really no basis to think it is fake, other than wanting it to be fake. And why is a bad story about Sony customer service a conspiracy meant to spread misinformation and make Sony look bad, but a story about bad MS customer service obvious true fact?
Further research on Ive's part indicated that a dusty PS3 will probably have the warranty voided, due to the aforementioned neglect category.

See, I told everyone dust doesn't void the PS3 warranty. That is just more FUD spread at Sony.
Did you read your own quote? It's in black and white right there that, according to the CS reps, excessive dust can void your warranty.
Uh, no. ;)

I was just taking out all my anger. :p
Seriously, I like you man - but how else is someone supposed to respond to something like that?

You usually have interesting things to say, but you need to mellow out -- there is no reason to get so upset over something so small. Like any kind of faith, if you have faith in the strength of the PS3, someone attacking it shouldn't shake your foundation.

Just agree to disagree - it turns 'arguments' into 'discussions'.
This should be kept by the Sony forum, not a thread where Wii60 people can post and spread more FUD on Sony like usual because they don't consider the PS3 to be "cool".

Anyway, this article is just more FUD on Sony again. I know people who sent in dusty consoles and had ZERO issues getting their PS3 replaced. How many anti-MS or anti-Nintendo threads are there here? Next to none because there's too many stuck up fanboys wanting to bash PS3.

Anyway, my PS3 has NO dust because I dust mine every few days. I want to keep my PS3 looking nice. :D
Link to friends with dusty consoles?

Instead of putting ridiculous posts on here defending your PS3 love, try to actually just use whatever facts you do have, instead of acting like a raving Shaq-Fu fanboy.

This is your proof that this story is false? Did you read it, or were you to busy thinking of ways to say fuck?

Mana Knight is in trouble again, is he? Sigh... He got passion for the PS3, i give you that.

While i find the dust story out of the ordinary, i don't care if this is true or not, there's no such thing as 100% satisfied at 100% of the time. The way i look at it, it's a very isolated incident and good to know and life goes on...

Battle Chicken got some deep philosophies there...

It seems to me that Mana Knight doesn't want anyone to bash the PS3, yet Nobody really was saying anything about the PS3 til Mana had to intervene.

Mana Knight Instigated all this just so he could talk about his PS3, I find this beyond Sad.

I just heard the conversation.... wow, just wow. Of course ALL electronics attract dust. Unless your running a clean room, there is NO WAY to prevent this from happening. How many people you know live, watch, and play video games inside of a clean room!?!?!?

Looks like that CSR is gonna get a write up for this making Sony look like a fool. Right now I am glad I didn't buy a PS3.

LEAVE PS3 ALONE!

Ok, I do have to say this guy's PS3 is gross. Saying that its a danger to the technician's health is overboard, but seriously, is the owner playing his PS3 in the attic?
Ok, I do have to say this guy's PS3 is gross. Opening and cleaning it would be a bitch, worth the $150 alone. It's probably got a foul odor coming from it too.

That picture should be in the OP, for hilarity's sake.
Yeah, I doubt it was a health threat, but then again, it's probably got a foul odor coming from it too.
I bought a ps2 from ebay that was nearly as dusty. It was a model 50001 and my 3rd replacement (still works). Just canned air it and looked find but still smelled like tobacco for a few weeks. So I guess the technician could get lung cancer if he huffed on it enough that would be a health hazard.

Yeah, no wonder the warranty was voided. That thing looks like it was buried before it was sent off. I mean, come on. Someone obviously just wanted to create a story here.
http://consumerist.com/consumer/polls/is-this-playstation-3-too-dusty-to-be-repaired-under-warranty-322858.php

Health hazard or not, that's neglect. Imagine what it looked like before it got shipped and handled
The only thing this really proves is the PS3 they gave pictures of are VERY dirty. Even if this is the guy's PS3, and it very well may be, it does NOT mean that the person SENT it that dirty.

When I was in college, I loaded and drove trucks for UPS -- the conditions, at least at the hub I worked, were pretty crappy/run down, and stuff was suprisingly dirty and mishandled.

As the sole reason for releasing the photos was a PR move (shitty PR move, IMO), for the Consumerist, to say 'hey, its REALLY dirty' -- so the handling received AT their site is also represented in the photo -- as far as we know the shell (sans the vents) were spotless on receipt. We don't know, and unless the person who sent it TO Sony took picutres PRIOR to sending it, we never will.

Also, I just noticed The collected dust on the first picture doesn't look right.

There's a door that covers that up right? The underside of the door is pretty clean. no prints, no nothing -- why is there a ton of settled dust on the bottom lip, like it was open forever, and there isn't any dust sedementation It doesn't make sense that it would ebn THAT dirty if it was closed.

Edit: I just read a post by the owner of this PS3 in the Consumerist comments (bolded parts my emphasis):

BY IVEALWAYSGOTMAIL10 AT 07:07 PM This is my ps3,

I wiped the system off before i sent it in,

Fact is that Almost any Desktop computer's Vents look about as dusty as the inside of the vents on my system, And the PS3 is a very glossy console that has a vacuum like fan system inside of it that creates static electricity, attracting even more dust.
So Guys, Anyone who says i should have cleaned it more, Exactly what do you think i should have done?
Compressed air voids the warranty, And im not going out and buying a mini-vacuum just to vacuum off my ps3, I have a Dyson and from what I've heard from the techs High powered vacuums also void the warranty.
How is one supposed to clean the inside of the memory stick and sd slots? And the USB ports?!
Again, The system did not "go to burning man", and No matter what anyone says i took great care of my system, I LEFT THE MMC READER CLOSED! It was NEVER OPEN I didn't use it!

Computers, Receivers, Tivos, Dvrs, ps2's, All of those things get very dusty very easily.
The ONLY Contributing factor to the mass amount of dust other than my dead skin, and the air around me, was that I ran FOLDING@HOME , Which (for all you non-ps3 owners) Is a computing project that you can set to start when you ps3 is Idle, It runs 24/7 Using alot of CPU and spinning the fans (collecting dust) in an effort to use the worlds computer power to research ways to cure diseases like Alzheimer's, using simulations of foling proteins.)
FOLDING@HOME IS INCLUDED with the ps3 firmware, Maybe They should bring to the attention of the world the fact that It may in fact be the cause of the end of your warranty.
Again I 100% Beleive that the contributing factor to the amount of dust is because the system was left to run Folding@home Computations almost 24/7.
Maybe sony should send out some SD CF and MS Slot holders to stop the dust from getting in, maybe some slot cleaners and a Mini dirt-devil to come with your ps3? this is absolutely ridiculous.
The ps3 was Kept Indoors, in an entertainment center, a Quite CLEAN entertainment center, that still has a very faint half circle of dust where the ps3 use to sit.

I just put his whole post down, I don't agree with all his assertions, but the fact he kept that door shut makes me question the validity of the picture.

IMO Sony aught to just give the guy a new one. This is bad, stupid PR handling, and it just gives them a PR black eye for no good reason.

I would say exactly the same thing if it was a Wii or an Xbox360 customer service problem, For the record.

Actually this would work better for him:

http://www.oreck.com/air-purifiers/xl_air_purifier_tabletop_pro.cfm

Sharper Image just lost a class action lawsuit about their Ionic Breeze. The Oreck system is better and they just dropped the price to $350.

Of course, given the state his PS3 is in, he would bring the Oreck air purifier back within the 60-day trial saying it worked fine at first but not now and want a refund. It will look like the PS3 does now with him saying, "Oh I cleaned it just like you told me to do." :)

I inspected my PS3 after the first story in this topic, and that was oddly the ONLY area of my PS3 to have any significant dust build up. I have no idea why, I keep that little flap closed.

I figured it out. The guy sent it out spotless. The box opened up, fell out of the truck, and fell down a dusty embankment. The delivery man tried to put it back in the box before anyone noticed, but the damage had been done. I'd go and post this story claiming to be the delivery man, if I was in a trolling mood.

*shrug* you can disagree with me (assuming thats what you're doing) -- I don't get all upity when someone expresses an opinion different than mine.

Regardless of how clean or dirty the PS3 was, lots more people have read and looked at the followup story because of the photos they posted of the unit -- last time I looked, 17,000 people didn't think that the PS3 was too dirty to fix; which was at the time about 60% of the respondants.

If they just replaced it, they wouldn't have received the additional bad press, or negative good will.

Did you mean to quote me? I was just thinking aloud, nonseriously. It would explain a little bit though.

This thread is spectacular for a multitude of reasons. The things I've learned today:

 • TMK isn't a whiny bitch AT ALL.
 • Don't play your PS3 in 1930s Oklahoma.
 • I can record calls in my state.
 • Sony is NEVER wrong.

Thanks thread!

I did mean to quote you, but I thought you were being sarcastic, and your post seemed content-wise poking fun at the big one I made earlier. It looks like I read too much into it - sorry about that.

I *have* seen packages fall of trucks and tear open on a number of occasions, tho.. so your theory is technically possible (but unlikely!)

LMAO at CocheseUGA's 1930's Dust Bowl comment. Even if no one else got it, I did.

That there is one damn dusty PS3, I don't think they're under any obligation to fix that. Could they have just cleaned it off? Yeah, probably. Could he have just cleaned it off before he sent it? Hell yes! If he didn't have the courtesy (read: smarts) to take a little cloth to it, then he shouldn't have a problem with them turning it back.
Another post regarding this guy on the consumerist website. The kid got on Fox News where Sony's position wasn't even represented.

Note: All companies have PR monkeys.
Naw, SCEA's PR isn't bad at all. The PS3 was indeed dusty and shouldn't be fixed. END OF STORY!!! That PS3 looks like it was within a MotorStorm track just lying around.
