E3 2009 - MS Press Briefing - What Did You Think?
NO READ or go see what Kojima said

"the entire metal gear franchise"

basically both PS3 and Xbox 360 are both getting Metal Gear Solid 5
um...has Metal Gear Solid 5 been released? No? Go re-read what I said.

Totally interested in Project Natal, if not the only reason being the ability to make obscene gestures with one's avatar.

Oh, dear god... in the span of 3 minutes, I'm already sick of hearing about "what Kojima was talking about". I can't wait until an official answer is out, which likely won't be until after Sony's conference tomorrow.

On that note, if it's NOT exclusive, then MS fucked up on that conference. Did the man not say "everything you see from here on out is exclusive?". That would, theoretically, include Metal Gear, yes?
Next year for Microsoft: We got MLB The Show, Gran Turismo and Blu Ray
hehe. From what MS showed just now, they don't need any of that shit.

Wow, I would say this was a lot more exciting last year, and I really doubt Nintendo will come close and Sony will have to reveal something pretty big to match this. I didn't get to start watching until Forza 3 was announced, and it doesn't appear I missed much, but did Rare announce anything?

Well, props to Mr. Twist for setting up the thread so the awful jokes about what we will do in Milo's presence can continue.

I did get the sense that MGS has that new title coming to 360 but it's not exclusive. blitz6speed logic is sound in that they would have used the word exclusive. And yes, lots of the games and features are at least 6 months to 18 months away.

But I have to give microsoft one major point. They fucking shocked me with the Natal. It may not work like they say, it was mostly tech demos. But the scope and initiative of a new project like that for a home console is amazing JUST for the fact they are trying to do it. It's the first step, and then the technology gets better. Like the crappy camera from PS2. Voice recognition on windows mobile.

The entire 3d kid? Jeebus

Hm, I'm thinking I don't need to buy any more Wii games if NATAL really delivers.

Hell, I should just sell my Wii now while the resale/trade in value is somewhat reasonable. :p
So wait, the WHOLE Metal Gear Series is coming? I thought it was just that new game.
No, just a game with the Metal Gear Solid name attached to it, which was Rising.
What bar? All we saw was a tech demo.
You and anyone else who is saying that Natal isn't a big deal are ignorant. The sheer technology driving that thing which is still being worked on, clearly, is amazing and groundbreaking. If you realize that this is technology moving in a direction away from interfaces/input devices, you'll understand A) how incredibly difficult it is to make something like this that works this well and B) that this is the start of things that can do much more than Wii motion sensing can.

Natal is pretty amazing, and we haven't even had the chance to apply it to anything yet. But the drawing on the picture sent to the kid, are you serious if you're not saying that's amazing? Please.

I don't know what the purpose is of having people stand there with a 360 controller and pretend to play the pre-recorded in-game footage, bugged me throughout the whole conference.
Next year for Microsoft: We got MLB The Show, Gran Turismo and Blu Ray
haha... these will never happen but you can't have everything

I was excited when i heard the dudes voice from Crackdown, im so happy there is Crackdown 2 coming out. Best news from MS E3 conference IMO. Also CODMW2 and Alan Wake both looked really awesome.

The motion controller and all the xbox live stuff they talked about was boring and i could care less. That painting segment was not a good way to sell the controller/cam. That guys painting looked like shit.
I'm shocked you weren't impressed. Let me guess, you'll blow your load over Sony's show tomorrow no matter the quality. Yeah, that's right. I'm going out on a limb.

If you weren't at least mildly impressed by some of that, you're in denial. That's usually the rule though, the more excessively negative someone is, the more pissed off they are that it isn't on their console of choice.
I missed the very beginning of the show, but I wasn't impressed with what I saw either (started watching during the Forza 3 demo). I'll have to find a place to watch the beginning, but what I watched was lame.

Like he said, most of the stuff was coming 2010. The motion controls are a neat piece of technology, but unproven, and a gimmick, until I see some games that are made BETTER because of them. I realize they were tech demos, but Breakout and MS Paint (with no accuracy)? Come on.
And who the fuck wants to play with a 12 year old boy, let alone a virtual one? Nintendogs was more impressive than that. And the entire video of that looked completely fabricated. It's Peter Moleneux for crying out loud. The guy is a hype machine. His games never live up to the hype he creates, and I LIKED both Fables a lot. They still weren't what he said they would be.

Not to mention the fact that he said his team was introduced to the technology 3 months ago. You believe they created what was in that video in 3 months? AI that sophisticated, and in depth? No way. CG demo. I'm calling that right now. And again, even if it's real... who wants to play with a fake 12 year old boy?

I'm a big 360 fan. I own all current consoles and handhelds, and my platform of choice is usually the 360... but from what I saw, that was a lame presentation. Especially for some one who can already play motion control games (own a Wii) and MGS (Don't even like the series).

Just because some on isn't impressed with what was shown, doesn't make them a fanboy of another console. Sounds to me like you're being the fanboy, in this case.

Ahhh, anyone else kinda dissapointed in Alan Wake? I was so hyped for it to be finally shown, and was kind of dissapointed.

Project Natal seems neat...
So Bayonetta is just a DMC ripoff?
It's from the creator of Devil May Cry, so...I guess you could say it is.

But it was a tech demo. The PS2's Eye Toy didn't work at all, at least not for me, apparently because in development they had the perfect environment, and once it was in your home it couldn't distinguish you from a shelf of books. The technology I'm sure is much better now, so, yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes. Did they say when it would be released?
It's from the creator of Devil May Cry, so...I guess you could say it is.
Thought so, just came back from the P.O. and saw them talking about the game.
What's the games on demand thing going to be? Was there any other info? Wondering if it's like a Gametap kind of thing.
Full retail games (and pricing) that you can buy and download. Also, you don't have to use MS points, you can use a credit card directly. It will start out with 30 games or so and grow from there.
Just because some on isn't impressed with what was shown, doesn't make them a fanboy of another console.
Yes, in this case, it does. Especially considering the person I was responding to.

Sounds to me like you're being the fanboy, in this case.
You're not hearing too clearly, then. I prefer the 360 to the PS3, and this was a damn impressive showing. I've got nothing against Sony's console. I'm not claiming "HA HA PS3 is DEAD" like you're seeing elsewhere. So if you think that's "being a fanboy," that's your problem.

You said you can already play motion control games on the Wii (...with a much different control setup), and MGS on the PS3 (...but not the same MGS). So nothing else besides that even mildly impressed you then, huh? What the fuck do you want from them, then?
Ahhh, anyone else kinda dissapointed in Alan Wake? I was so hyped for it to be finally shown, and was kind of dissapointed.
Yeah, didn't seem like much. There's still significant time left for it, but based on today, I'll probably be passing on this one.
And again, even if it's real... who wants to play with a fake 12 year old boy?
Now I see what they were shooting for - a new and so far untapped market!

Twitter and Facebook is cool and all, but typing with a controller is not that great for the updating parts of those features.

Splinter Cell: Conviction looked like a cool integration of Hitman-style open stealth gameplay with the SC vibe to it that could make it more fun to play to me.

The MW2 demo made me wish IW could make a Star Wars game with Hoth blizzard/stealth and Endor/Speeder levels. I'll probably rent it like COD4 to check it out.

Shadow Complex could be a really cool game, so I'll definitely check out the demo whenever it comes out.

It's a good thing Joy Ride is free, because it didn't look that good.

Crackdown 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Metal Gear Solid: Rising could be really cool but their trailers didn't show much of anything at all.

Forza 3 could be really cool for first-person driving if it's as good as GT5 Prologue's FP driving, which I preferred over any other view.

Don't care about either of the Halo games or Alan Wake.

They had a nice pace early on with showing each game for a few minutes but not lingering on for too long, though I was hoping for more XBLA stuff and maybe even Mass Effect 2.

The Xbox Live stuff is interesting, though not much of it interests me since I don't use Netflix. Taking screenshots for Facebook could be really cool since I know that feature isn't network-wide on the PS3, which just works with only a few games. Not having to download the free videos that offer occasionally will be great when I don't want to torture myself for months while trying to get through an episode of Voltron because it was free, though I hope it will remember where I leave off so I can resume later. It would have been nice to see a promise to fix dashboard slowness issues to go with all of the new stuff.

Natal could be really cool, but none of the stuff they showed was all that interesting. I'd like to see Seaman 2, as far as everyone in NA would know it as, be done with this to get past the awful voice-detection on the DC version of the original. The menu stuff could be really cool if I can just say where I want it to go and it'll go there on the dashboard. Developers are just now getting dev kits, so I'm interested in seeing what they can do with it.

A very good show overall.

This should get a thread of its own but whatever.

Microsoft's direct attacks against Sony and Nintendo.

When the guy said we Won't be showing a bunch of sales charts and graphs, or attach rates

(that was awesome and a clear swipe at Sony's E3 2008 which was mostly manipulated data fudging numbers)

And Kinoda's swipe at Nintendo by saying Natal will not end up with people sitting on the counch doing some predetermined waggle command over and over.

Zing!!

Nintendo and Sony must be simmering and their blood boiling
But it was a tech demo. Look, I'm not saying it was the greatest thing ever. I'm saying it's innovation. It's something new and unexpected. I watched the E3 video's when the Eye-Toy was shown and I wasn't impressed. Because like the Wii games it had a limited gimmick and I could see the novelty wearing off. This is taking that same idea and trying to flesh it out. Yes, I know it was only a tech demo but the point I'm stressing is that it's potential. It could be half-assed now and great later on.

Then again, I just love gadgets. New things with buttons and all that. So I'm prone to lean that way. It just really surprised me as the level of what they were trying to do. It's very bold

Considering the Natal hardware could be little more than a high-res webcam with a microphone, the fact that it could take a snapshot isn't impressive. What it does with it is the interesting part. The topic was Fish, the lady drew a fish, and so the AI saw (and was possibly looking for) a Fish. What would've happened if the lady drew a Horse, or person, or a scribble?

Stuff like this that operates under the ideal conditions doesn't make me stand up and take notice. Stuff that operates just fine in far outside of ideal does. They didn't show anything in that area, which is why I am still hesitant to call it groundbreaking. If it lives up to it's promises, then yeah, it will be. Don't call this ignorance, just skepticism.
Twitter and Facebook is cool and all, but typing with a controller is not that great for the updating parts of those features.
True, although any USB keyboard is compatible with the dash. I bought a cheapo $20 a while back and haven't regretted it for a minute, makes going through the account recovery/message sending/etc screens a lot easier.

I could see myself using this occasionally. Especially to annoy people with in-game screenshots.
Yes, in this case, it does. Especially considering the person I was responding to.

Well, when you accuse some one else of being a fanboy of a different console just because they aren't impressed with your consoles showing... yeah. I take that as fanboyish behavior.

And like I said. I didn't see the whole press conference... so all I saw was Forza, which I don't care about. I got Forza 2 with my 360 and played it maybe 3 times.

Alan Wake... which I am interested in. I'm not a big survival horror fan though, so I hope it's a little different than most. It didn't look much different than your standard Resident Evil, or Siren gameplay.

Halo 3 ODST, which I don't care about. I'm done with the Halo franchise. They have grown stale to me.

MGS, which like I said, I don't care for. I have tried many of the MGS games, and they just aren't my type of game. I hate stealth based games. HATE THEM.

Then they showed off the Natal, which is a cool piece of tech, that I'm not nearly sold on. After owning a Wii since launch, I don't see how motion controls add anything to games. I'd go as far as to say I'm disenchanted with the whole motion control thing at this point, and will avoid them if at all possible.

So... yeah. Can you see how I wouldn't find what I saw impressive?

I heard they teased Crackdown 2 though, which has me excited. That was an awesome game, and I really want a sequel. Was there anything else noteworthy that I missed? All I heard about was RockBand Beetles, Crackdown 2, and Modern Warfare 2 (which I already knew about). Heck, I already knew about most of what MS showed.

We already knew about Forza 3, Modern Warfare 2, Rock Band Beetles, Halo ODST, Alan Wake, and most people already guessed there was a new MGS staring Raiden coming. Heck, even MS's camera was leaked a week or two ago. I don't see what was so exciting about this press conference.

Edit: Oh yeah, the post above this one reminded me of the Twitter/Facebook/Zune stuff. I had completely forgotten about it. That shows about how much I care about those things being on my console. I have a PC, so even if I used social networking sites like Twitter of Facebook (both of which I find completely useless... Twitter moreso), then I still wouldn't care.
I realize I must sound like a dick, and like some angry gamer, but I'm just saying, nothing I watched excited me. I am not angry with MS. I have no problem with what was shown... I just don't care about most of it. I'll buy Modern Warfare 2, and Crackdown 2... like I would have anyway. The rest, I just don't care about.
Well, when you accuse some one else of being a fanboy of a different console just because they aren't impressed with your consoles showing... yeah. I take that as fanboyish behavior.
It's based on past behavior. I guess you're not familiar with the posts of the person I was responding to. There are no hard-set rules like "if you accuse someone of being a fanboy, YOU ARE!" Christ. Feel free to look at my post history for proof if you really care that much. I doubt you do, since I sure as hell wouldn't.
Look, I'm not saying it was the greatest thing ever. I'm saying it's innovation. It's something new and unexpected. I agree that the innovation is key here...I think part of the problem is, almost everyone shat themselves over the Wii controls, and that didn't exactly pan out as well as it could have. So, stuff like this gets a huge wave of doubt after its introduced. I'm certainly skeptical as hell, but I'm still excited in case it really does pan out.

I'm hoping MS has finally nailed this. I don't like their odds (as in, being as smooth as what was demoed today), but someone has to get it right eventually. Hopefully this is it.

This may be sorta off topic but when are we getting the spring dashboard update or are we not getting one this spring?

Skeptical is good. Calling people stupid, or saying the entire thing is shit already is just taking up a predetermined position. Making this work in reality is much harder than showing pre-recorded video of theories. Hell, all we saw was a juiced-up Eye-toy painting program. But it did (supposedly) use the voice recognition properly. I'm surprised they claimed it could do all those things. If they don't deliver, it could be a large black eye
NATAL and voice recog could alieviate that problem, Frisky.
The Seaman thing? Yeah, that's what I said. ;)

Sure, but I'm not interested in hooking up a USB keyboard when I have a laptop that I can do all of that with while I'm using the 360.

Thanks to all of you who posted the info live for those of us who were unfortunate enough to miss it live :D

Did they announce any exclusive marketplace content, like demos or an XBLA title now available...etc. like they have in the past?
This may be sorta off topic but when are we getting the spring dashboard update or are we not getting one this spring?
I have a feeling that is over, unfortunately. Died out with the NXE changeover.

I hope all these new features are not held until Fall, although it wouldn't surprise me if they did so in order to push it as a new feature for the holidays.

now here's a question since keyboards were mentioned. It looked like you could scan stuff in and use it, right? Come on, keyboard support.
Did they announce any exclusive marketplace content, like demos or an XBLA title now available...etc. like they have in the past?
Damn, I totally forgot about that. I don't think they released anything as a special surprise or whatever. Can someone in front of a 360 check and see if there's anything up?
Umm hello theres a dedicated Natal thread over here we can't bog down a huge E3 2009 thread with all Natal stuff.

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=226061&page=2

Besides the Metal Gear
"franchise" coming to the 360 is huge news

Franchise is a code word. Xbox 360 is getting all that Konami makes regarding Metal Gear Solid
It's a good idea Mr. Twist, but it's only segmenting the conversation really. It can't "bog down" this thread in theory. This thread is in the XBOX 360 Forum. This thread is even titles MS Press Briefing. So it's all related. But yes, if people who couldn't stream this have questions, perhaps we should clear some room to get those answered.

I have to mention this again

Twitter + FaceBook + Xbox Live + Natal = Complete Global shutdown.

I can just imagine a Live FaceBook Twitter App, that I can update and chat with friends in real time using Natal where I can draw something on paper and Natal instantly scans that and pass it to my friend.

No need to type just write it on paper.

There are exclusive Alan Wake and Halo 3 ODST premium themes on Live, Linkin.

There's a Guitar Hero: Smash Hits demo on there, too. That's it besides a few trailers and small stuff like that.

Edit: Primetime Channel is up now, so you can see the beta schedule for 1 vs 100. It's under the Events and Games Marketplace tabs.
Thanks to all of you who posted the info live for those of us who were unfortunate enough to miss it live :D

Epic is doing a new side-scrolling shooter game (think like Crash Commando) on XBLA. There was another game but I forgot what it was called.

MW 2 maps will be timed exclusive on Live. Rock Band Beatles will have exclusive DLC on 360.

Halo ODST owners get in Halo: Reach multiplayer beta

video side being renamed Zune Video and expanding the number of countries that can access it

1 vs. 100 US Beta goes live tonight at 10:30 Eastern

Twitter, Facebook, and Live.FM free for gold users

Full retail 360 games (older titles) will be available for download and are independent from the MS Point system

Games will have avatar rewards tied into the achievement system soon

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Full retail 360 games (older titles) will be available for download and are independent from the MS Point system

WHAT!!! I did'nt see that during the E3 conference.

Why would I digitally download it??? a full 360 game when its costs $14.99 bargain bin price or less on Craigslist or used at Gamestop?? with a 20% off coupon, and I won the physical media disk which I can let my friend borrow, or resell it, and doesn't take up my limited HDD space??
