Fallout: New Vegas - Gen. Discussion & Info
It's all depends on when you decide to head up to New Vegas. Basically everything bad you have ever done to to either the NCR or Caesars Legion goes back to regular. They both randomly send guys to tell you that you've been forgiven this once and ooffer you to join them. This decision isn't made on the spot. You have to go to their camps to ally with them.
Thanks for the info! I have Boone as a companion, and I've been trying to avoid the eastern part of the map, seeing as the Legion's presence is pretty strong there. Now, I won't worry.

Don't think I've found any unique armor, yet. Have found a bunch of unique weapons, though. Off the top of my head...

Knock-Knock, unique fire ax, found in the Camp Searchlight fire station
Chopper, unique cleaver, found at the Wolfhorn Ranch
That Gun, pistol that fires rifle round, bought it from Cliff in Novac, and I have yet to find it anywhere else, so I think it's unique
Liberator, unique machete, received at Camp Nelson

Yeah, and once you ally with them, you automatically lose the other missions, and there are two achievements for each faction, IIRC.

The one thing I really miss are the Bobbleheads. I know they were a pain to hunt down, but they really helped your character out with skill and S.P.E.C.I.A.L. boosting...I don't think there's anything in this game to boost your core S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats outside of taking levels of Intense Training.

I think my side quest for ED-E glitched out. I'm not getting any audio playbacks since my first one, even though I've visited and talked to the people who are suppose to trigger the playbacks. Oh, well.

Yeah, I miss them, too. I like collectibles that actually have an effect on your game. As far as improving SPECIAL goes, I think I read about a doctor in New Vegas that sells you implant perks that add 1 point to each.

Just make sure if you have to go to Legion once you're pardoned, do NOT take Boone with you, as he will still be hostile.

I couldn't get him to playback at the junk yard, so I took him to Helios One, and that's the only time I've heard him playback since.

Yeah, I figured as much. I just like knowing that I can run around now, kill everyone, and not worry about it later. Thanks.

In addition (off the top of my head):

Thump-Thump (Grenade Rifle) - Laying in front of the Boomers' Solar Panel generators to the left of the ant mound.

This Machine (M1 Garand - Personal Favorite) - Reward for finishing the NCR soldier Conteras quest line in Camp McCarran.

Love And Hate (Melee Weapon - Fists) - Can be found on Viper Gang Leaders.
Ok, so Deathclaws are fucking insane! Seriously, their armor is almost impossible to penetrate after the first shot...
Yeah...I don't know why, but I feel really under-powered in this game against certain creatures, no matter what I do. In Fallout 3 you could become a real beast.
Ok, so Deathclaws are fucking insane! Seriously, their armor is almost impossible to penetrate after the first shot...
Amen. I haven't the slightest idea why they buffed them up so damn much. Because of it I don't plan on venturing near the quarry again until my character is at least 25 to cover my basis. I managed two mature and three young kills before an entire horde of them overwhelmed us in seconds. At 22 I've already bought most of the FO3 staples that made that character a beast (Commando, Sniper, Finesse, Better Criticals, Grim Reaper though given the glitches and rep system they should have left it as is). Back when I first attempted that quest I was maybe 15 - 19.

Once I buy Action Girl and the rest of S.P.E.C.I.A.L. implants I'm returning with Cass for a well deserved massacre. I might as well hand That Gun over to her for added insurance. Between that and my Garand we shouldn't have any more trouble. If we do then that quarry is going to stay over run. I don't have time for that kind of bullshit especially if they plan on introducing new higher leveled creatures in future DLC.

It's kind of annoying that they beefed up the Deathclaws and took away the dart gun, the one thing that made it possible to fight them at lower levels in Fallout 3.

Is there really any benefit to becoming a King? I get a favor from the King and am not sure whether or not I want to be a King, but the other options don't seem too great.

Preaching to the choir here my friend. I'm not too keen on the decreased emphasis on weapon crafting either. I miss hunting down schematics and making Nuka-Grenades. I grew accustomed to carrying around a well rounded armory from grenades and rocket launchers to ridiculously powerful pistols and rifles. Now because of the difficulty spike I don't see the point in carrying anything even remotely out out of the norm unless it's a rifle because the DT mechanic can screw you royal. The game is a hell of a lot more focused on stats which is fine but I miss the freedom you had in FO3. Now I regret hording a lot of the material I found earlier in the game because all I use the work bench for is Weapon Repair Kits and the occasional Super Stim. Waste of time.

Campfire crafting was an unnecessary mechanic that should have never made it into the game IMO. 90% of the good recipes are too expensive/annoying to pursue even on a semi-regular basis while what few advantages the rest offer you still aren't useful enough to warrant creation.

If I'm going to waste my time hunting Cazadors, White Nettle (which is rare as HOLY fuck) and Radscorpions you are going to have to supply me with at least a stack of items to make it worth my while. So much easier to just sell the ingredients for easy caps and move onto another quest line. The risk/reward seems more tailored to fighting creatures you rarely deal with as apposed to the more prevalent faction enemies through out the game.

I generally don't play game campaigns more than once, especially ones of this length, but it's looking like it's going to be too much hassle to try to do keep rollback saves and hit all the story cheezemints on one play-through. I think I'm just going to pick a faction and muscle through to the endgame and go back to it once there's a GOTY edition.

I concur. I was thinking about this all weekend.

I think the DR or Damage resistance or whatever you want to call it is kind of ridiculous. If I shoot you in the face with a shotgun from inches away it shouldn't matter if you have a motorcycle helmet on.

Also, I keep falling into this habit of every fight I have to cripple the enemy's leg and then just backpedal and hipfire. Granted, I'm only level 8 but it's kind of silly.

I'm also on Very Hard & Hardcore mode and I'm enjoying the game. I like it a lot. I just don't like that each fight I either feel way outclassed or way overpowered, I haven't felt in the middle at all yet. And exploiting the dumb AI doesn't really seem like it's the way the devs intended me to play the game.
There are three main factions (NCR, Legion, and Mr. House). From what I read, doing the main quests (the ones that have achievements attached to them) for any one faction will close off the quests from the others. There are also minor quests that can be closed off due to your relationship with a particular group.
Thanks.

Do all the side quest and stuff until your ready to end the game then you just need two saves as your starting points to do all four endings.

Game End Quests

For these quests you must choose only one faction to be loyal to. The quests for the other factions are failed when you gain infamy for siding against them with whichever faction you choose. The choice between Mr. House and Independance/Yes Man is made first during Wild Card: Change in Management and The House Always Wins, but the player is still able to choose between this choice, Caesar's Legion, or the NCR for a little longer. The final choice on a single faction must be made after the player floats up the B-29 from the lake for the Boomers (or immediately after the first choice if you have already completed Volare! previously). After completing the quest Volare!, the next step is to report to Caesar's Legion, Mr. House, Yes Man, or the NCR that the boomers will assist them in the fight at Hoover Dam. Which faction the player reports to locks the player to that faction for the remainder of the game.

Whichever faction you choose, completion of the final quest initiates a end cut scene after which the player must load a save to continue playing. I would recommend keeping a save from before you choose a faction to be loyal to and loading all the way back to that point, because after a faction is chosen, all the others (excluding Yes Man) will become hostile to the player. So in order to complete all of the side quests available in one game, it would be necessary to load to a point three to four quests back, before an affiliation is chosen. There are also achievements/trophies for two of the final quests for each faction so getting all achievements would require four playthroughs of the final missions.

For anyone just about to start and unsure about hardcore mode, just go for it, especially if you're the kind of person who loves to pick up every, single piece of junk and constantly return to your safehouse to unload your goods. I've noticed very little difference from my FO3 experience. The sleep, hunger, and water requirements are not so restrictive that you constantly find yourself stopping what you're doing. And as someone else mentioned earlier, for the most part, the ammo weight is a non-factor. Every once and awhile, you might find yourself dumping some excess ammo, just to shave a few pounds off here and there. The only ammo that I have found with considerable weight are the missiles. Don't know about mini-nukes, though.

EDIT: Question...is it just me, or are they not many computers to be hacked? I just noticed I have 6, and I've been to a lot of places. Will there be more computers when I hit New Vegas or some of the military places in the North?

Are you checking every terminal you come across? I'm not sure how you haven't ran into more hackable computers yet. I've ran into one at least every 2 or 3 buildings I venture into especially near Vegas itself.

Anyway... this is probably a stupid or nerdy question but which out of the three main game ending factions has the best intentions for Earth? I had planned to screw everyone the first chance I got but after the conversation with House when I delivered the chip I honestly believe the guy. Still don't trust him though by any length of the imagination but I given the circumstances I doubt NCR, Legion or any other faction including my character could have done any better. Seems crystal clear if they refuse to unify then he'll more than likely be the universe's best shot at rebuilding. As clever as I've crafted my character to be I want to avoid the disappointment of watching a bad ending because I chose to go it alone.

Shorten version: Which faction will guarantee me a "good/perfect" ending or are they all the same?

A short answer would be ideal. I'm not looking for detailed spoilers just a something along the lines of a simple yes or no.
I made plenty of saves before delivering the chip and after meeting Yes Man so I haven't sided with anyone yet unless the NCR quests I've been doing up to this point count. Not sure if they do since I received an invitation to Legion's camp with a full pardon anyway.

Well, I haven't ventured near Vegas, yet, so that's probably it. I've also mostly investigated a bunch of the one-room buildings and caves and stuff. I'm sure I'll get a lot more computers once I hit up the larger buildings

I am only about 5 seconds into the game and I already dont like this faction bullshit. I am all of consequences in a game but not in this fashion and not so early in the game.

I went to the NSCRF and was fired upon on sight although there is a quest marker inside. I killed everyone outside then met a guy who I paid 100 caps to let me inside but before I could walk the 4 ft to the door he started shooting at me.

Is there any reason to be friendly or neutral with the powder gangers? Other than to keep them from shooting at you?

EDIT: I saw one advantage just after I put this post up, I was heading to NCR correctional facility and ran into a couple of powder gangers, so I switched to their out fit, debated on killing them, then eventually did.

Then I went over a hill and there I was, wearing the powder ganger outfit I wasn't getting fired upon walking up to NCR correctional.

EDIT 2: What a waste of 100 caps, as soon as I enter the door to the visitor's center I theres a room of like 4 or 5 guys and they all start shooting me.

I know there's a quest that I "failed" (never even started), because I killed one of their leaders (the main guy at the NCR Correctional Facility). It's a minor quest, though, and does not a achievement attached to it.

Well I ran back out because I kept dying, then I killed the dude at the door. Then walked back inside the room and lit everyone on fire with an incinerator I picked up.

Then I got a pop up saying Meyers has died, didnt' know who he was so I loaded it up again and then everyone is friendly to me. Apparently Meyers is the guy who they want as sheriff.

This game is weird, I pay to get inside, they attack me, I run back outside when they attempt to attack me, kill the dude I paid then go back inside and everyones friendly.

As far as the computer terminal thing, I haven't found many to hack either, but I think that depends on how you're trying to keep your karma...there's not a lot of accessible terminals that aren't highlighted in red.

So how do you align yourself with the Legion? I've gotten as far as Camp Nelson and did the quest there. Now what?

Has anybody else noticed their DT rating being grayed out on their Pip-Boy screen? I don't know if that's telling me something, or if it's a bug. From what I can tell, my defenses have not gotten worse. I can still take a ton of punishment, and the shield pops up to tell me that many attacks are not breaking the threshold.

You have to get through a couple of quest for them to ally yourself with them. So far they trust me but I'm still not allowed to carry my weapons around the camp. right now i'm
trying to assassinate the president but I can't seem to get passed the NCR Rangers since they spot me right away.

So far 24 hours into the game and the only glitch I've had is a bark scorpion under the ground but I still managed to kill it easily

So, the ED-E quest finally decided to work for me, but here's a somewhat funny story...

I was trying to trigger the second playback, but nothing was working. Finally, I decided to try the scientist working at Helios One. Well, not only did he not trigger the playback, ED-E flipped the hell out and attacked him! I decided to reload and try again later. The next time, he did actually trigger the playback, and a little while later, I was contacted by the two factions that wanted to inspect and upgrade him.

EDIT:

Getting ED-E upgraded by the BoS is nice. Makes it a little more durable, so you don't have to worry about the damn thing running after enemies and dying before you catch up.

No second patch yet for 360? Sigh. I think the PC already got one that fixed the majority of things, maybe someone can confirm.

I really want to get this, but I want the game fixed first!

Picked up Fable 3 today and passed on Fallout to my nephew to play. Hopefully by the time I beat Fable 3, there will be another patch out to fix everything.... I haven't run into annything too bad... no freezes for me... the only things are cosmetic... Animals running upside down and NCR troops holding there guns upside down.

Can't wait to play it though

Game got super buggy on me tonight. The frame rate came to a crawl. I quickly saved, and will try again tomorrow. This game needs some serious patches and quick.

Edit: Just as a side note, the game was running fine until I came across Hoover Dam, and then fast traveled to The Strip. Not sure if this is a bug or not.

That's what happened to me last night. Not sure if it was my 360 or the game. Hopefully the game.

I really need to work on getting to the quests to get myself a house. Haven't really done too much of the main story. Haven't gone to Nipton, but Mr House wants to see me.

I am sad because I am just not feeling this game as much as I did FO3. The story itself seems boring and done a million times. Guy tries to kill you, you try to get revenge.

None of the pop of FO3 is here at all. The bit at the beginning of FO3 establishing your char and developing relationships when you start off in the vault and then venture out to find your dad was epic. This just seems like another run of the mill generic revenge plot.

Now I am still very very early in the game but nothing so far has interested me at all.

EDIT: I regret getting this so early, this is defiantly a price drop game. Its very obvious they havent put the care into crafting a truly deep game like the crew of FO3. For example, I got a quest to go save some powder gangers from some legion troops. So I hustle over there thinking, well I have a high speech maybe I can talk them into handing them to me. Or maybe I can sneak them out with my sneak skill at night.

Uuhhhhhhhhhh no. When I get there its nothing but 5 random legion NPCs that I cant even interact with. They all just say the generic 1 line of dialogue as well as the actual slaves who say, "Hi ya doing?," when I walk up to them.

Sigh. Should have waited, should have waited.

Man, I got my butt in a sling. Make sure if you have *ANY* interest in the Platinum Chip that you get it ASAP, or be on at least pardonable terms with Caesar...what a mess of a fight that is once you're vilified by Legion..

After sending my game out through Goozex, I put it back into my request queue. I'm sitting at #564 in line. Hopefully, the game will be fully patched by the time I get it mailed to me.:D

See, I dont even think its really the glitches. FO3 had its share of crazy glitches also. I think the overall feel and story of this game is subpar and people cant excuse the tech flaws before of it.

Credibility = lost.
Credibility = lost.
Sigh, let me expand on what I mean as I didnt actually make this point in the post but was thinking about while typing. This game does not feel like it was made by the same people who made FO3. Yes they named it fall out but its lacking the flair, the deep storyline, the interesting set pieces of the FO3.

It feels like when one brother goes off to be a class A scholar and businessmen while the other brother is a freeloading loaf with no ambition.

For me at least, this game is night and day different from FO3. I can only assume it had to be different employees working on this than the crew of FO3. Maybe a different lead designer or writer.

You do realize that Fallout 3 was made by Bethesda and this was made by Obsidian right? Two entirely different dev houses. They actually brought people who worked on Fallout 1 and 2 back to work on New Vegas...

They didn't really bring them back, more so that those people just already happen to work at Obsidian.
