Fallout: New Vegas - Gen. Discussion & Info

Hardcore isn't really a difficulty, it's a way of life, if that makes sense. Yeah, gunfights are hard on Hardcore mode, but enemies are scaled to the "hard" difficulty, not the "very hard," if I recall. More difficult are bullets wearing you down, sleep not healing you, having to carry more food and water, etc.

And I still haven't gotten the achievement for 30 Caravan wins...

It appears the release date for Old World Blues has been pushed back to July 19th which I'm pretty cross about. Probably due to the hacking incident and new patch coming out but I'd rather have taken my chances with DLC launch glitches than pray the new patch doesn't unearth anything sinister in the main game.

I'm fine with it personally. I beat Honest Hearts, but there is still some stuff I wouldn't mind going back to. It gives me another month or so of playing a few other games until I once again devote all my time to FONV.

Aww, that sucks! OWB is actually the only one of the DLCs that I'm looking forward to.

Ok, my anticipation for Old World Blues just went through the roof.

ROBOT RAD SCORPIONS

I'm more interested in Christine's encounter with Ulysses myself. I heard OWB opens up new conversation options with her if you've played it before DM.

I'm more interested in Ulysses, personally. From the minute I saw his concept art I was amazed at how badass he looked. He was just instantly a character I had to know more about.

I honestly just want his outfit, unique weapon and to know why he has an apparent grudge against my character. Regardless I have very little interest in sparing a character I will probably never see again. Especially one who already has one hell of an ass kicking coming for the PC job.

I just started playing this game yesterday, it was on my backlog for quite a bit haha. But I'm very glad I'm playing it, the atmosphere is different from Fallout 3, and I'm excited to see how the game unfolds!

Is it just me, or does the map feel smaller? New Vegas itself doesn't seem much bigger than the strip proper and walking from Goodsprings to Vegas on the highway takes maybe 15-20 minutes if you don't have any encounters.
In DC walking from the 1st town and heading directly north for 25 minutes felt like it took you less than 1/3rd of the map.

I want his outfit, too! I'll try to get it without killing him, though.

I actually heard that the map is a lot smaller than the Fallout 3 map, but it may've just been a rumor. I'll be honest that the game world at least feels smaller.

I honestly think a lot of that is just the story making it seem smaller. I've explored every location on the map, and I can honestly say it's still huge. I think a part of it is that at least initially, you are blocked off from a very large portion of DC in FO3. In New Vegas, there was very little I couldn't go to almost immediately (at least by just walking). I know in FO3 I would have many instances where I physically could not pass an area, and having to walk around it would prove to be a big deal.
I have. I actually beat it on my first play through on hardcore. I found it fun, but difficult at times.

A few tips:
Food is more important then bullets.
Drink from fountains, lakes, and toilets to save money on water bottles.
Turn the difficulty down to very easy.
I'll go ahead and do my little mini review of this game. I played on hardcore mode, and beat the game over the course of a couple months, mostly just playing through the main story line. I didn't have too much trouble until the final boss battle. I had it on normal difficulty the whole game, but the combination of constant VATS freezing glitches, poor weapons that were not suited for the fight, and fighting a million dudes at one time made me die a lot, so I set the difficulty on very easy. I still kept going down because of the VATS freezing crap, but eventually pulled through.

After my first play through, I felt like the game pales in comparison to Fallout 3, which is definitely one of my favorite games. I wanted to start a new game and do all of the side quests, and now I'm enjoying the game a lot more. Exploration is what the Bethesda style games are known for, and I did a lot of that in Fallout 3 and loved it, but just felt like beating New Vegas as quick as possible for some reason. So, I got to Level 15 in 16 hours and completed the main story in hardcore mode, but didn't enjoy it. Now I'm playing it in normal mode and exploring, and I'm having a lot of fun. I've played 10 hours, now at level 10, and I'm just now about to talk to House for the first time, so obviously I'm taking my time a lot more.

I probably still like Fallout 3 more, but this game is great, no doubt. I randomly stumbled into Vault 11 yesterday. I highly recommend finding that place, it has it's own story, and it's really cool discovering the mysteries of it. It's directly west of boulder city and northwest of El Dorado Dry Lake, check it out. And for anyone who has seen it, are there more places that have mysteries and their own stories like that? It's not even an achievement to do everything in there, which is crazy to me. Please recommend anything.

Finally decided to get the DLC for New Vegas. This game just doesn't grasp me like Fallout 3 did unfortunately :(

Playing Dead Money now... Opened up Sierra Madre, keep dying on my way over there. Them Ghost seekers etc. are a pain in the a**.

Dead money was alot harder than anything else in new vegas. I was at level 35 and accidently deleted my game saves the other day, so I guess I'm not trying honest hearts. I really don't feel like going through the game again to build myself up. I really loved Fallout 3, new vegas seemed to be lacking something. Although it was still a great game.

If you wanted to build a guy fast you could just create a new character with 9 luck and a high endurance and sneak all the way to the first casino, clean it out and then do the same to the rest of the strip. When you go into the casino where
Benny
is, you'll get an XP boost from completing the mission of finding him.

Once you clean out all the casinos, head on over to the implant doctor. Get all the implants with the money. Then hit up gun runners and gear up with the best stuff. Run through the fiend area a bunch of times for a while, kill everything and sell everything to gun runners. Each time you're at the store, pick up the best guns and mods (wait 72 hours, I think - might be longer, if you need them to get new inventory).

In a couple hours you should be back on track.

Thanks, I'll probably try that. I'm just guessing you shouldn't try honest hearts unless you are level 20 atleast. I played new vegas for like 300+ hours so I'm kind of sick of it, but I did want to try the dlc.

I wouldn't take the level recommendations that seriously. I banged out Dead Money on Hard in Hardcore mode with a level 5 melee/energy weapons character without much of a problem. I'm sure you could do the same with HH. Just save often and play smart.
I'm sure it won't be too bad at a lower level, I'll probably download it later. Have you played it? If so is it worth getting?
HH is 100x better than Dead Money. It's worth the 800 points.

I posted a few pages back about it.

Dead Money was one of the worst DLC's I've played, right next to Mothership Zeta.

Honest Hearts was pretty good IMO. The fact that you can go back there later is nice, because odds are you'll want to come back to get several weapons/items. The story itself wasn't bad and there were a few genuinely difficult times if you rush into something stupidly.

I'm about to start my first playthrough on hardcore.. Any tips on how to best build my character at the start? How should I allocate my special points?

I want to use energy weapons and perhaps heavy weapons/explosives heh..

Mothership Zeta is the best ever!

I think I'll finally pick this up with the $10 sale at Best Buy, and with a gift card I have, it will only end up at $5. Anyway, are either of the 2 DLC out now worth getting? They didn't get very good reviews...

I found an outfit that I really want, but I don't want to kill the person to steal it because they give quests. Where can you buy nice clothes?

If it's not a unique NPC outfit that's part of their design then their death is your only option. Otherwise you might luck out shopping around and scavenging, but I can't recall any clothing shops in NV. Who is it in particular? Clothes tend to change visually depending on gender and sometimes NPC. They could be wearing a fairly common or easily accessible item that simply appears different on them. Keep in mind though there's a good chance it might revert back to it's original state when you wear it.

I would say pass on Dead Money. Honest Hearts is very good. I would definitely recommend it, if it went on sale. At the current price it all depends on how much you enjoy the game. Personally it was absolutely worth it for me to have a new place to explore.

If your wondering if it's worth the money. It took me about five hours to get all the achievements. I have not searched for all the unique weapons.

Actually I'd say pass on Honest Hearts (very little content wise) and def get Dead Money. Dead Money is at least challenging, and takes a while to complete. Just started DM on my PS3 and loving it all over again. Honest Heart...Meh, I'll get to it when I get to it. Once on the 360 was enough.

I buy games to play, not rush through. I bought NV on day one, and am still playing it. Even got it for the PS3 as well.

So I REALLY like this game and have experienced NO glitches and I'm 20 hours in. I'm more addicted than I remember being in Fallout 3, and while the environment isn't as creepy (I don't think that's the right word, try... authentic), I feel as if it's a better environment, because I HATED going through all the metro stations in FO3, and all of the buildings and such seemed copied and pasted. It felt like I was always going through the same places and buildings. I'm not sure if I'm in the minority there or not. Also, the first time I made my way up a big hill and saw ths strip all lit up at night... it was epic. I think I'll give FO3 another run through after I beat New Vegas in its entirety. I'll most likely pick up all the DLC for this as well.

Personally, I think this game has better atmosphere. Yeah, FO3 did post-apocalyptic wasteland extremely well, but this throws in the Vegas theme, and blows it away.

Holy shit. I was totally not going to buy any New Vegas dlc, but after watching the trailer for "Old World Blues", I have changed my mind.

I'm not sure I would call it a easter egg or not, but I noticed a cool little peek towards lonesome road today. It's a path blocked off by tons of stuff, and it has signs saying "the lonesome road" and something like "go away courier!" Did anyone else see that?

No, where is it????????????
He's referring to this location. I came upon that before they announced the DLC; pretty neat discovery.
Correct, just fast travel to Primm and head East and you'll see it.

I've got to wait until I get paid later this week and probably won't start it until after HH. Ugh. Here's hoping they don't plan a holiday release for Lonesome Road.
