Fallout: New Vegas - Gen. Discussion & Info

Sorry about the slight confusion guys. I guess I should have quoted someone first.
Expect 3-6 hours, max.
That sounds fair. I could probably squeeze out a little more if I go OCD on exploring for weapons and glitches. What's your favorite HH weapon thus far (assuming you're playing it and not going by a general average)?
Not a launch purchaser, but a big Fallout fan and just finished this a month or so ago. It is pretty short. I finished in under 20 hours and I did a shit ton of side quests. The extremely high quality writing though makes it a must play.

Edit: Oops, didn't realize you were asking about the new DLC. I need to pick it up. Glad we're getting a release like Broken Steel.
the developers have stated the game has a definite ending, NOT like Broken Steel

Bought it, but got caught up in LA Noire. I'll let you know tomorrow. I hear there is a .45 pistol that is decent though.

Appreciate it, MTX.

True. Even still Lonesome Road is a decent sounding continuation of the protagonist's story so I'm looking forward to it. I'd prefer another BS though and was hoping LR would be it. I can't imagine there's much content left for us after these packs come out for a long while assuming there are any plans for more at all.

Well, that means I definitely won't be having as much fun with it then. They should give it an optional open ending through the DLC.

My prayers is by the time Lonesome Road comes out

They release some cool New Vegas Premium Themes

as well as avatar gear

NCR Ranger outfit would be flawless!

I have been on the lookout for deals on this for quite sometime, but have been hesitant to buy it due to all of the glitches I have heard of. Have they done anything to fix them yet? Im getting anxious to play another fallout, as fallout 3 was one of my favorite games on the 360.

I think when it comes to glitches it's pretty much just the luck of the draw. I played it fully patched and it was still a completely buggy mess for me. I had companions disappear, I fell through the environment, had saves corrupted, all sorts of stuff. It's fun to play though.

Buy it as cheaply as humanly possible or wait for a GOTY edition. It honestly is luck of the draw as previously noted, but the amount of launch glitches I ran into on top of the list that the first patch supposedly fixed was completely unacceptable. Hell I just fired up my copy to download the new patch and it still hasn't brought ED-E back to my world along with the loot I lost with it (glitched through the terrain).

It's still a title worth playing though just don't expect to see nor experience anything close to competing with FO3 regardless of how you felt about the game.
Beat Dead Money today. I really did not enjoy it compared to the Fallout 3 DLCs.
Best Fallout DLCs (my opinion of course):
Mothership Zeta - FO3
Broken Steel - FO3
Operation Ancourage - FO3
Honest Hearts - FNV
Dead Money - FO3
Point Lookout - FO3

I've played it since launch, and much here recently, and I can say that the bugs are completely hit or miss. For me, I've had two quests not complete. Other than that, I haven't seen a lot of these issues.

I'm playing through Honest Hearts right now. Can't say too much about it yet other than I'm glad
the entire party died at the beginning.

Dead Money

I'll probably play Honest Hearts in the next couple of weeks or so.

Wow, between the PSN bucket o' fail, LA Noire disabling consoles, and FNV unreadeable save files, it's been a shitty month for gaming.

More Honest Hearts thoughts.

If you want to continue the New Vegas storyline in regards to the burning man, then you want to buy Honest Hearts.

So far, I don't understand the criticism coming from "professional" reviewers about the enemies you fight. I'm fighting exactly what I'd expect to fight in a fucked up apocalyptic desert. Giant Yao Guai, giant cazadors, large dogs, tribes gone wild...

I've actually died twice playing it, but that was because I was stupid when fighting. I'm level 37 now and not much usually gets within range to even attack me.

How do you die?

I got my Anti-Material Rifle and NOTHING touches me

Giant Cazador poisoned me and I fell off a cliff. heh.

Edit: Swapping between the All American and the custom cowboy repeater.

So what does everyone think is the hardest thing to do in this game? I'm looking for a challenge to fit the achievement of peaking my character at 40, but I'm not sure what it is. Anybody have any suggestions? Like a perilous journey to get an awesome unique weapon or the complete eradication of a species? I just want to put some new life into this until the next DLC...

I had a hell of a time with the Deathclaw situation at the quarry, but I was at a much lower level.

There's a hidden spot, off to the right of the main map. You have to go down off a cliff, then swim across water to get there. The area must be populated with at least 40 deathclaws. No lie. I must have died 13 times either falling off the cliff, or from the deathclaw attacks. Eventually I went over there with my anti-material and blew them apart, but yeah, it was pretty frustrating.

Other than a random stupid death here or there, I can't say all that much is hard though.

Think I'll wait for the inevitable 400 point sale on Honest Hearts. Hopefully it's before 11/11/11 because once Skyrim comes out, I won't be touching this.

Yeah this game has it's hooks in me hard again, but I will wait for the sale as well. I have almost 40 hours in my save file and only completed one storyline quest (Wild Card). There is still plenty for me to do.

When Honest Hearts came out we were told that next DLC is in JUNE then after that JULY.

Its June 16th right now, only 14 days left and they havent even announced it yet.

All they originally said was "releasing in June" on the press release. There are still 14 days left in the month. It should be noted that with E3 and the recent Brink hacks, they might have to delay this some.

Yeah, I guess, but im sure you would agree from a math stand point:

Fallout NV > Brink lol

Word. I'm waiting for OWB to finally drop before I snag HH for my third Kai Leng (ME: Retribution) inspired Knife & Pistol stealth/melee playthrough. So far Hardcore mode is more tedious than difficult and I'm seriously thinking of speed running for the achievement. Dead Money is going to be a pain if I don't get my Repair skill up to disarm traps, but I want the Assassin Suit asap so I'm going in around Lvl. 5. Not sure how I'm going to manage the SLP meter but it seems to fill the slowest out of them all.

I can still count on at least a handful of console freezes on load screens per hour, but that isn't going to stop me from netting a full achievement score. I wish I had bothered to learn how to play Caravan sooner though. Between the poor AI and stealing everything that isn't nailed down free caps are even less of an issue than on my other profiles.

Oh, I already did my fair share of research for the achievement a week ago and had a good laugh at how poor the AI is betting everything while never using face cards at all against you. They really should have decreased the player pool even further, disabled reverse pickpocketing and limited you to only three games per person. Ten times easier than going through the hassle of boosting your luck for the casinos, but Blackjack is so much more fun. I'm probably going to whore out Ringo a little longer for implant caps then bounce.

are the game freezes/bugs as widespread as claimed? are they often for you guys? if i saved frequently/used auto save would i be fine and not pissed as hell?

are the DLCs all recommended or some not worth getting?

I've put close to 200 hours in and the bugs/ freezes are not nearly as bad as they once were. I've only had one quest glitch on me. It is easily playable.

I've beaten both dlcs. Honest Hearts was much better than Dead Money IMO.
are the game freezes/bugs as widespread as claimed? are they often for you guys? if i saved frequently/used auto save would i be fine and not pissed as hell?
The latter definitely. If this were launch week I would have told you to steer clear of this game at all cost until the first patch were released. A general rule of thumb in all RPGs is to save frequently regardless. It's more or less like this:

Launch NV - Borderline unplayable for those unlucky enough to be plagued by game breakers e.g. corrupted saves, disappearing/irremovable quest items and unresolvable quest glitches, falling into/stuck in environments on a regular basis and companions disappearing at random never to return.

Post Launch NV - Very playable even for those plagued by game breakers though they should expect the semi-occasional console freeze, slightly increased load times, an extremely rare corrupted auto-save here or there and some companions hesitating to engage enemies when appropriate or running off on their own for a few seconds before returning to you.

The patches did a solid job of fixing my two main game breakers (disappearing companions and buggy quicksand environments swallowing me whole) in exchange for random console freezes during load screens on a semi-regular basis. Frozen characters in V.A.T.S. has also become an issue which is something I never experienced pre-patch, but thankfully are rare.

The patches compromised the NPC AI for the NCR Emergency Radio as well forcing them to follow me for a few seconds before returning to the entrance of Camp McCarran awaiting redeployment. Zero point in doing so as this does nothing to fix it. Only an enemy encounter will break the cycle after which there is a good chance they'll freeze in place. And yes, killing them will affect your faction reputation unless it's a sneak attack critical with a silenced weapon and they nor anyone else affiliated notices you. Rangers seem less glitchy than Troopers but it does affect them both. Supply drops are completely unaffected.

Now compared to the launch bugs these are minor annoyances that rarely affect my personal enjoyment of the game. Just save often, pray you don't run into a new game breakers and you'll be fine. Even still I'd urge new players to wait for GOTY or buy a copy on the cheap and expect to run into at least one or two minor glitches while playing.

are the DLCs all recommended or some not worth getting?
I can only speak for Dead Money and I personally loved it. It's definitely not for everyone (especially impatient gun ho rushers) but nowhere near difficult for 20+ characters. Somewhat tedious at times but well paced. Great characters, solid story, loot is a bit disappointing if you aren't into energy weapons or copious amounts of Weapon Repair Kits. I would wait for a sale before plunging in but definitely pick it up.

I set this game aside for a while, but now I'm craving it. BUT I'm figuring on getting all the DLC in the inevitable GOTY release, or sales as noted above. I did enjoy FO3's DLC, despite obvious shortcomings of repetitiveness.

I'll check those Caravan tips above because I do like those FO chieves.

Caravan exploitation is essentially built around three facts:

1) The AI is beyond stupid. Because of this...
2) ...The only face cards that matter are Jacks and Kings.
3) The minimum number of cards for a deck is 30.

The first player to reach between 21 - 26 in two card piles without going over wins. It's the fastest win condition so focus on filling unchallenged piles rather than going toe to toe with the AI. Jacks are card disruption forcing whatever card you play one on to be discarded from the pile. Kings double the value of cards which speeds up your win condition and makes it easier to bust the AI's Caravans.

Everything else is more or less irrelevant. Since the usage of face cards is universal combined with the poor AI it's child's play to win even on the worst starting hands. You can discard cards from your hand to draw new ones and stall uncontested. Your barter skill affects how much the AI will wager (usually 25 - 50% on low; 75% and higher otherwise) before games and you can reverse pickpocket cash and caps when they run dry to get rich.

It's not as fast as breaking the Casinos on slots or Blackjack, but can be done much earlier for zero investment and doesn't require 9 - 10 Luck to guarantee success. Ringo and the NCR Ambassador aren't affected by the 5 win cap so you can whore them out for as long as you want.
has anyone beaten this game on hardcore? is it extremely frustrating?
I have. I actually beat it on my first play through on hardcore. I found it fun, but difficult at times.

A few tips:
Food is more important then bullets.
Drink from fountains, lakes, and toilets to save money on water bottles.
Turn the difficulty down to very easy.
