Fallout: New Vegas - Gen. Discussion & Info

I tried to play fallout 3 for a couple of hours but couldn't get into it. I bought New Vegas a while ago willing to give it a second chance, but does it take a while to get the story going or will I have a pretty clear idea of the game after a couple hours?
were the dlc releases this spread out in fallout 3? i'm not sure if i should buy soon or wait for a goty/all dlc pack.
Yes. It took almost 8 months for all DLC to come out.

It takes about 10 hours before you start to get sucked in. I hated FO3 when I first started playing it, but after sticking with it, it got a lot better. Now I'm hooked on both of them. I've probably spent 200+ hours on each one.
My goddddddddddddd the intro talk with the first people never ends!!!
OMG! You're not kidding! I sat for like an hour just talking to them!!!

The part about the penis toes was hilarious, though! Made the entire thing worth it, IMO!

I downloaded it at 5:30pm...

Played from 6pm until 8pm...took a break, watched The Hills on Netflix (shut up its for the wife), then played from 9pm to just under 10pm

Did you not do anything? I've put at least 2-3 in and only gotten a couple quests done. You must have done something wrong.
Verdict?
Pretty good

Current opinion order of DLC:
1. Old World Blues
2. Honest Hearts
3. Dead Money

I'm sure you can do that if you power through it as fast as possible and do nothing but the main objectives, but I've already spent longer than that on it, and I've barely touched the main stuff.

3 hours? It took me over an hour just to be able to walk to the first building outside. I'm level 40 and the lobotomites were actually kicking my ass for a second.

So it seems as if most people think OWB is the best DLC, looks like I'll have to pick it up when I finish up my 2nd playthrough.
By the way, you know a game is amazing when you take 40 hours on one playthrough, and then 10 hours into the next one you've already discovered many things you hadn't before.

What kind of things have you discovered? I'm sitting on a 49 hour playthrough and I also started a new game but I'm getting bored because I'm not finding anything new.

I tried going for different things like unique weapons. I have one playthrough at 41 that's over 80 hours, and another just started that at least 25. You can always find something new!

I haven't found any thing other than a couple of guns here and there, I've already pretty thoroughly explored the map (hunted the Legendary Deathclaw, too) and it just doesn't feel like the game has much left to offer.

Are you guys talking about the one in Quarry Junction, or am I missing him? Oh, I killed the Blind Deathclaw, if that's worth anything, lol:lol:

I've found at LEAST 5 new sidequests that I didn't find the 1st time, and I already have a companion that I totally missed the 1st time. Keep in mind I'm only like 5 hours in too.

I heard the legendary deathclaw was the best enemy in the game. I didn't find him, where is he? I remember I killed the legendary cazadore (or, my companions for that matter, I didn't even know he was there until I turned around and found him dead on the ground. I heard he was one of the thougher enemies in the game, too). Where is the deathclaw?

I've finally been convinced to pull the trigger on OWB by the way, and I'm downloading it now. The reviews from eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-07-20-fallout-new-vegas-old-world-blues-review) and examiner (http://www.examiner.com/comedy-in-n...lc-old-world-blues-is-a-word-hilarious-review) convinced me to get it, as eurogamer refers to it as the best Fallout DLC ever, which is saying a lot with the likes of Point Lookout, while examiner calls it 2nd best, behind Point Lookout. They're basically fawning over it.

I just finished the DLC. I will answer any questions anyone has. Just a note, it is incredibly difficult. I was a level 39 going into this, and I found it hard.

Did you use the pulse gun? Totally rocked the robots. And for the Nightstalkers and Lobotomites, I used A Light Shining in Darkness. Made the entire thing so far a breeze.

Legendary Deathclaw is in Dead Wind Cavern. Quarry Junction only has the Mother and Alpha Male deathclaws along with the weaker ones under it.

Yeah, I took out the ones at Alpha Junction for the one mission in the quest for Lucy at the thorn, the one where you have to collect all the eggs. I recommend that mission to anyone by the way, it's very difficult if you go into at any level under 15, but the reward totaled over 1000 caps, and at the end, you receive the best shotgun in the game.

I think I do like this one better than Fallout 3, it just seems like there's so many more side quests, and I know for a fact that there's a lot more locations. The only sole difference is that Fallout 3 just felt so much more authentic in that it felt that you were actually in a wasteland, and I LOVED how all of the buildings were real-life locations too. Oh well, I guess I'll have a final verdict after I take another playthrough of Fallout 3.

Finished the main storyline in OWB! Took me about 10 hours with a tad bit of fooling around. Great expansion, and probably my favorite one for Fallout. Let me know if you have questions!

A general overview of available or at least your most favorite weapons, effectiveness of the new stealth suit, level of difficulty and depth of Ulysses/Christine cameos please.

There is Ulysses graffiti EVERYWHERE

Mural tier or bathroom chicken scratch tier? What about your captors? Hilariously quirky or infuriatingly mediocre? I want to play this so bad right now. ;(

No points dude. Don't get paid until Friday and won't have time to play until sometime next week. Extremely tempted to wiki spoil at the moment but somehow I'm holding it together. ;\

Ouch, that's quite a list, but I'll try my best, lol!

NOTE: This will probably contain some spoilers, so I am warning you now! I will encapsulate the entire thing in spoiler tags, so if you're unsure about reading, err on the side of caution!!

And in the name of SCIENCE! we begin!

First, let's start with the weapons. One of my favorites, and one that was highly profiled before release, is the K9000 Cyberdog gun. To put it simply, this thing spits lead like a motherfucker. It uses .44 mag rounds so it definitely does some damage! There is also an upgrade that you can find schematics for that improve it slightly, and add new aesthetics. You'll have to find it in the crater unless you can pass a speech check in the beginning of the add-on. If you have the skill (75 in guns), you will simply be given the gun. Easy as pie! Next, one that wasn't all that powerful, but has other, far more industrious uses is the sonic emitter. I didn't really think it was all that impressive, but you can upgrade it to disable force fields, which not only is pretty neat, but is required in some later quests. You can also find new frequencies for the gun to suit your tastes. The other new gun is the LAER. This one is pretty cool, as it's basically a rifle version of the pulse gun, as far as looks. It's got some fairly impressive stats, but is outdone by some other weapons. There are a few, so you can still repair it if it becomes your new weapon of choice.

There are several new melee weapons including proton axes, protonic inversion axes, scientist gloves, and throwing axes. I didn't spend too much time with them, but I did kill the last major boss with the protonic inversion axe, and it took little to no effort. So, if melee is your thing, there's something here for you, but I think the variety of energy weapons is where the add-on shines. Oh, and quick tip. If you want to make quick work of your enemies, keep the Pulse Gun handy. It will decimate the robotic armies of scorpions in no time!

Next, you asked about the stealth suit. Let me tell you, I will be wearing no other armor for the duration of the game. It is the best piece of equipment you receive in either Bethesda Fallout game, in my opinion. Not only does the base suit provide a stealth upgrade (Duh!), but there are several upgrades that make it a phenomenal piece of armor. It dispenses stimpacks and med-x when it deems it necessary, and will alert the player to what is going on in their surroundings. I loved the fact that it actually talks to you, and will even say things like, "Do you like me?" which make the entire experience surreal. The upgrades aren't small things, either. From increasing the amount of Sneak boost you have all the way up to enhancing your perception and agility, they will help turn you into the greatest cat burglar the Mojave has ever seen (Or not)! It doesn't have too big of a DT boost, and is easily beaten by other armors, but the bonuses it adds can't be matched. It's a must have for anyone creating a stealth character.

As far as difficulty, I found it harder than Honest Hearts, but not even close to the brutal punishment of Dead Money. I would follow the game's recommendation, and steer clear with any sub-15 character. If you turn the difficulty down, you may be able to get by with as little as a 10, but you'd be hurting badly. There are ways to make it easier on yourself, however. Take some excellent armor, a great gun for unarmored foes, and, of course, the Pulse Gun. Don't even think about going it without it. It is an absolute life saver!!!!! It easily let me beat the Giant Robo-Scorpion with only slight damage taken. Overall, I'd give the difficulty a 7 out of 10.

Finally, we get to the cameos. Let me be frank. I did not really play the add-on looking for this type of thing. I ran across some, but i would not consider myself a good source of knowledge on this subject. Sorry, but it's the truth.

There is quite a bit of backstory in this add-on. Elijah, Ulysses, and Christine were all people that I caught tidbits about during discussion and in recovered audio logs. Both Elijah and Ulysses have something to do with the story, but they themselves aren't actually in the add-on, which disappointed me greatly. If you're curious about what they all have to do with the Think Tank and whatnot, you can find many audio logs in the Big Empty telling their stories, and can even have conversations about them with some of the characters in the add-on. That's really all I can say, however.

Hope the above helped! I split it into four sections respectively following Ink's line of questioning. If you don't want to read the spoiler tags, let me say this: Buy this immediately! It is the most fun I've ever had with any Fallout game! It brings back the funny, and adds almost too much to describe to the game. If you've been bored with the Mojave, the Big Empty is, ironically, more than enough to put new life into New Vegas.

You sir are an extraordinary gentleman. This is exactly the kind of summary I wanted. Just enough information without ruining anything vital in the process. Bra-vo my friend. I'm overjoyed to finally have found a use for the Pulse Gun besides terrorizing the BoS base considering how much of a bitch it was to acquire in the first place. A little saddened by DM still reigning supreme in terms of difficulty but I'll get over it. My melee character is going to love the new stealth suit.

Thanks again!

You're welcome! I'm glad I could help! Do you think the spoiler tags were necessary, though? I've been wondering if I should only leave the disclaimer...

The spoiler tags were very necessary. It's common courtesy plus you would have caught hell by everyone here if you excluded them so no further editing is required. Great job man.

Just found some hard confirmation that Lonesome Road will be released sometime later this month. Since I still haven't gotten around to buying points yet I might as well wait a little longer for an actual date. Hopefully between all the DLC I've missed and Deus Ex I'm good until Gears 3.

If it doesn't get good reviews, I don't think I'll buy right away. Unless it's deemed a "can't miss" DLC, I'll wait for a sale so I can pick up DM and HH as well.

Good thread going here guys! So would you all say OWB is a better DLC than HH and DM? I have to say i didnt really love Dead Money and Honest hearts was decent but i sort of craved more.

Tomorrow i may snag the OWB DLC, it looks pretty cool overall. I know New Vegas had its share of issues but man i loved every second of that game, put in so far about 100 hours...definitly a favorite of mine this generation next to FO3.

You've probably read my thoughts on it above, but if you haven't go do that. I'd say that this DLC is worth a buy. Hell, it's worth more than they charge for it. It they asked me to pay $5 more or I'd lose it, I'd pay in a heartbeat. This is what all add-ons should aspire to be. Get it now, and thank me later!

Damn, there is a ton of stuff to do in Freeside. I'm taking my time with this game. I'm working for The King right now, and pimping for the Garretts.

Old World Blues is great. probably my favorite Fallout DLC (so far) except for Broken Steel. I've spent 7 hours just goofing around in buildings that aren't related to the main quest, and also doing some of the questlines. I feel like there's so much more to explore in the dozen or so extra labs around the Big Empty.

For those with a high score in Guns who are in OWB,
finding the two mods (in the labs) for the K9000 Cyberdog Gun make it a murderous killing machine, allowing it to 1) fire 40% faster and 2) use .44 Magnum ammo which is WAY WAY WAY more powerful than the standard .357 :bouncy:

Just real quick, my non-spoiler advice for those about to go into OWB:
bring LOTS of caps and as much essential equipment as you can with you...there are plenty of spaces to store things, so load up before you make the trip. Enemies are pretty tough, and the essential equipment that you typically use in the mojave wasteland are sometimes hard to find.

I recently became unemployed - fortunately I have money saved to get by - but having much more time on my hands has allowed me to restart another game of FNV before delving into OWB, and it's hilarious how making one simple choice differently uncovers a quest (or more) that you've never done before. This is my fourth playthrough of the game, but it's like a whole new adventure :)

My apologies to Kirk and everyone else who eagerly awaits the official release date of RL, but the achievement list has just been revealed. Saltiness brewing from the first one down the list aside
because there is no way in hell I'll complete it in my canon profile SINCE THE DAMN fuckING BOT IS STILL MIA IN MY GAME...
it's relatively safe to say I'm pretty fucking hyped.
