favorite 2d (SNES) platformer

CAGiversary!
there are so many but my favorite would probably have to be Donkey Kong Country because of the visuals and kick ass OST.

second place would probably be yoshi's island because it was really out there and had lots of revolutionary mechanics.

what do you guys like from the 2d SNES era?

This probably deserves to be in the old-school forum.

It doesn't get much better than Super Metroid. But I'll have to give Mega Man X, DKC, & Super Mario World honorable mentions.

my snes came with MarioKart as well.

I still think yoshi's island was way better than SMW

I think it's a draw. Gamers from each generation will say one's better but that's not true. They are equally excellent.

Super Mario World. Always liked it more than SMB3, and it's not a generational thing as I started with the original SMB when it came out and loved SMB 2 and especially SMB3. But SMW just took the cake with more worlds and the added exploration with keys, secret exits etc.

Super Metroid is my all time favorite game, but I don't consider it a platformer. More of a shooter/adventure game with platforming elements.

There's so many great ones, but I'd have to go with Donkey Kong Country 2. I really wish they would make a new DKC for the DS.

Mario 3 on the All-Stars cart I guess, since Mario 3 = best game ever made.

Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and Donkey Kong Country 2 are all close calls though.

everyone prefers DKC2 over DKC?

hmm, I didn't like DKC2 at all it didn't have the appeal because you couldn't play as DK.

DKC2 refined the mechanics a lot so it was actually pleasant to play. DKC1 was pretty (for the time, those prerended characters in DKCs, Mario RPG, Mario Kart 64, etc. have aged pretty horridly), but the control was kinda janky.

Super Mario World easily.

There were other great platformers, yes, but SMW is just in a league of its own. Tons to do, very fun to play. It was just the complete package.
There was Kiddy in DKC3! He was like DK...kinda.
There's a reason why we've never seen him again.

Is Metroid 3 a platformer? I think of it as an action-adventure, just semantics I guess. My vote still goes to Yoshi's Island. It did something new with the genre and had great secret levels.
