I wasn't able to make the event, and I donated to Japan through other channels... but I have to say, I'm really moved by the community.
To be honest, I was actually getting a bit tired of it all. It felt like a sort of exclusive community, where if you're not "in," you don't mean anything. It felt like a big bragfest, as anybody who's been to SRK can attest to. Just last week, we saw Noel Brown slug SmoothViper on stream, making everyone say "LOL ITS MAHVEL BABY!" Is that what the community stands for? Random hype and violence?
But after this event, it was nice to see everyone unified and to give up their time and money for a good cause. Starting with the USA vs. Japan championships in 2000, it seems like there was always a unique bond with Japan that fighting game fans shared. It was a rivalry, but one born out of mutual respect. And even then, that relationship continues to grow, as Madcatz signing Daigo actually made a big deal among Japanese players.
After all the turbulence and infighting that the community has gone through... it was nice to see one day where we all felt unified, where we rose above the pettiness of tier lists and making fun of some less skilled player who was on stream.
Thanks to every one of you who help put it together. It feels like it wasn't just for Japan's sake but for our sake as well, to show how unified we are.
okay time to return to silliness and poor punctuation
I applaud your stance and viewpoints, sir.
