Curious question...do you guys still buy DVD's?

I don't tend to buy as much as I used to, the last DVD's I bought were Spider-Man 3, Ratatouille, and I'll be getting Superbad and maybe Pirates 3...I didn't really like the movie but seems odd to keep my collection short because of it.

So since I'm buying DVD's that are exclusive to Blu-Ray do you Blu-Ray people buy DVD's that are exclusive to HD DVD?

Well the only DVD's I ever buy now are anime-related. They look nice upscaled for the most part (FLCL ) but that's about it.

My folks still buy DVD's as I'm the only one in the family that buys Hi-Def stuff, so I'll borrow a DVD once in a while if I want.

Not to start a flame war, but there really hasn't been any new releases on HD-DVD that I would want. Bourne will change that, but my parents will probably get that so I won't need to and Transformers my brother bought so I didn't need to. Now, I did buy DVD's on black friday, but that was because they were dirt cheap. Caddyshack and the goonies for 3.98, and Ghostbusters 1 & 2 was 5.98 for both of them and that was just too good to pass up. Besides that, I don't really watch DVD's anymore. They hurt my eyes. ;)

The only DVDs I have bought since HDM has been released are a few anime titles.

Mostly older catalog titles, I'm not gonna wait years just to catch up on fine cinema.

I am movie lover after all.
The last one I bought was Enemy Mine.

However if it's on HD DVD, I'm simply going to wait.
And the only two I want are Children of Men, and Hot Fuzz.

The only DVD I've bought since I got my HD DVD player 16 months ago is Casino Royale (got it release week), because I knew I wouldn't have a Blu-Ray player for a while (if at all, at that point), and I couldn't pass up completing my Bond collection with the best flick in the series in quite a while.

My wife has bought some, mostly b-movies that won't get an HD release soon, if ever.

Pull a sporadic and import children of men. ;)

Well in that case, what's your dudes' wishlist for movies to come out in HD, announced or not?

Off the top of my head, it's:

- Last Of The Mohicans
- A Bronx Tale
- Legend Of Drunken Master
- Ferris Bueller's Day Off
- Both Ace Ventura Movies :p

Hey apparently some copies of ID4 leaked out to stores before being pulled.
So it exists!
DO WANT!
to sell on ebay :)

My wife bought "Knocked Up," which I regret, as I don't think it's a movie worth keeping around the house. Funny, but not that funny.

I also bought "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" from the $1 bin at Target. I don't think that movie would benefit from 1080p at all. ;)

Other than that, I don't plan to continue buying DVDs, with one or two exceptions. I know I'll end up buying WWE/wrestling videos on DVD, though, like the World Class Championship Wrestling DVD that's coming out before the end of the year, and WWE/wrestling stuff (like those people who say they buy TV shows on DVD still) has almost all been filmed using cameras that won't benefit from a hidef upgrade. So anything from their archives won't be worth the money (or just won't happen), while WWE is switching to HD cameras by January (or has already, despite USA Network not having an HD counterpart yet). Whether that means they'll start releasing stuff on BR/HD anytime soon, though, is questionable (particularly because they're distributed on DVD by Genius Entertainment, which may or may not tie them to the Weinsteins, who are more or less MIA in the hidef battle despite their HD DVD exclusivity).

Long answer short: for indie movies, dollar bin stuff, and big-time-pro-wrestling videos, yes. Anything else, I hope not.

Haven't bought a DVD since I got my PS3. If the movie is only on HD-DVD, I'll probably just wait until either I get a HD-DVD player, or the movie goes to Blu-ray. Can't think of many movies I don't already have that I need to buy right now.

I'll still buy a DVD here and there. Though, if a movie is exclusive to its respective format, I'll buy that one. If its for both, I lean more towards blu ray as I have the hd dvd addon drive, but I don't have a 360 with HDMI out, so my PS3 is the only HDMI hi def player that I have

What's a DVD? Heh. God bless Netflix. The last DVD I bought was The Simpsons Season 10. I know, not exactly a good investment, but hard to keep out of my collection.

Myke, Geko:

I need your opinions on this........"article".
I said wow.

Blu-ray Is Sony's Iraq

As expected, HD DVD sold very well and continues to show very good numbers during the holiday buying season. In looking back at the amount of pain this thing has caused Sony, I couldn't help but compare it to the U.S. and Iraq.
Think about it -- if Donald Rumsfeld, then the Secretary of Defense, had gone to George Bush and said, "Hey, we need to invade Iraq and the result will be I'll lose my job, most of the generals and advisers you currently have will resign or lose their jobs, you'll kill more U.S. soldiers than any president in near-term U.S. history, you'll lose Congress to the Democrats, you'll almost assure Hillary Clinton will be your successor, you'll restart the Cold War, you'll devalue the U.S. dollar to the lowest level in recent history, you'll go down in history as probably the dumbest U.S. president ever, and you'll be locked into an incredibly expensive battle you won't either be able to leave or win," you'd have to believe that George would have said, "No."
And not just "no," but "hell no, no way, nopers, negatory, not doing it, get the hell out of my office and don't come back."

Now look at Blu-ray. Since bringing it out, Sony has trashed its PlayStation division, had to downsize a number of top executives including the guy that was credited with creating the PlayStation's success in the first place. The company's financial performance has largely dropped into the toilet and it has had to sell off parts of the company to Toshiba, the company behind the other format. Key studios have abandoned it, some of which have gaming properties that probably now won't go to PlayStation. Sony has nearly assured that whatever country gets the next media format, it won't be Japan and probably will be China, it will be constantly reminded of the Betamax mistake, Nintendo Latest News about Nintendo is No. 1 in the gaming segment, and it'll be locked into a battle it can neither win nor exit from. You'd have to believe that the guy making the proposal would be chased by ninjas out of the office and his ending wouldn't have been a good one.

Oh, and one other similarity: If you point out that the Iraq war was brain-dead stupid, you are seen as a terrorist sympathizer; if you point out that Blu-ray was brain-dead stupid, you are portrayed as being on Toshiba or Microsoft's payroll. I still don't get the Microsoft thing, since neither it nor Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Latest News about Intel seems to care that much one way or the other now, and both are focused more on downloads. It gives me a lot of empathy for the kid in the "The Emperor's New Clothes."

I don't post much on Blu-Ray.com, but here's a C&P of what I said there:
An absolutely classless comparison from an absolutely clueless op-ed author.

If you notice the date on the parody article on him is from the middle of last year, and mentions what a shill he is for the Zune - yet the column posted in the OP is framed in the sense of "boy, that Zune was a dunderheaded failure, just as I predicted - but JUST YOU WAIT for the Zune II!!!"

It's somewhat slick, I suppose, but he's clearly on somebody's payroll (in all likelihood Microsoft). If he isn't, he's one of those folks who has an irrational hatred of Steve Jobs/all things Apple. He'll be one of those cats who predicts the imminent deminse of the iPod in every tech column he writes, and if it were to ever happen, he'd crow about how much foresight he has (rather than the mere probability of it coinciding, given how often he writes about it).

I'm curious, though, why you all think that right-wing websites are the only ones who would be interested in such an op-ed? I'm sure left-wing sites like Media Matters would be interested in reporters showing such disrespect to the operations in Iraq that they think it's a worthwhile comparison to an ultimately-meaningless-in-the-grand-scheme-of-life (loathe as BD adopters may be to admit) format war.

Yech.
...and, as it turns out, he's predicted the imminent demise of Apple no fewer than 50 times in the past 12 years. He also, in the article you link above, predicts that the Zune 2 will be the iPod killer, just like he predicted with the first iteration of the Zune.

And, my other post there, just for wholeness' sake:
The reason I brought the point up is because nobody at any point in the political spectrum would treat the situation our soldiers are currently in so blithely and flippantly as Enderle has. I think that support for the war or the desire to bring them home at the moment has little bearing when the standard for offense is, in my view, based upon the very comparison being made.

That's the last I'll say on the matter, though, as I feel that this has the potential to go down "political debate" alley quite quickly.
Oh wow, that's the much-maligned (apparently deservedly so) Rob Enderle? I've never read any of his stuff, and didn't follow the link, so I assumed an editorial so shameless and poorly written had to be a random blogger living in his mom's basement.

The fact that it was written by someone who would call himself a journalist makes it even more despicable. I hereby retract my first suggestion......

On second thought, scratch the other one too. He should clutch his chest and collapse face-first into a bucket of AIDS.

brownie points for any silly goose who gets the reference

Seriously, you guys want to discuss that so called "article"? Just ignore it and move along or if you want to discuss it discuss it elsewhere.
if you want to discuss it discuss it elsewhere.
It's pertinent to the format war.

I don't see how you can't see that.

It's a stupid article, and I'm HD DVD only (as of now). Even I can see that Blu Ray is winning........

next movie I'm gonna buy on HD DVD is probably American Gangster, unless there is a BOGO or B2GO that includes Anchorman and Old School
Uh, it's an article about HD DVD and Blu-Ray.
Why else would I have posted it here?
I just feel it will derail the thread. We all know its stupid and that guy obviously made some pretty horrid comparisons, he's not from a major Journalist company so what's the point? It's basically some tard blogging on a tech site. I'm just saying by you guys discussing it you're adding more fuel to his fire. The best way to go about it is to ignore it.

Oh please Linkin.
It's finally one thing HD DVD & BD fans can agree on for once.

And it sure derailed the thread, we were in the middle of some heavy BD and HD DVD news!
Oh please Linkin.

Its pointless, I took a 30sec. look at this and thought...."no way in hell anyone will take him serious"....to me discussing it here or anywhere else just makes idiots like him get what he wants: Attention.
As you wish.......... Master....

::bows and steps backwards::
Wasn't trying to sound high and mighty but if you wish, carry on, not like I'm going to delete any posts or lock the thread.

It serves a valuable purpose, for me at least. I had always heard how much people hated Enderle, and how big of a shill he was, particularly on AVS. Since the bitching always came from the blu side of the fence, I assumed that they were just upset that someone dared to write articles that put a positive spin on the red side (which, in my defense, is frequently the case when an article/writer is derided over there).

Now that I've read one of his articles, I understand what a douchebag he is, and will no longer discount negative comments about his editorials as being simply fanboyism.
BTW, I can't remember if it was Casey or Linkin who brought it up, but what's the lastest update with creating a movie discussion forum?
I asked CheapyD but he never really said anything. Rumors are that CAG might be going through an update and with the update will come many changes including the new movie forum.

Nice. Too bad the only one I'm interested in that I don't have on HD DVD already is Dog Day Afternoon. :(

Blu-ray Sells 2.7M Players in North America

Posted December 4, 2007 by Josh

bd.gif
Coming off of huge Blu-ray sales during the early holiday shopping season (which includes Black Friday), market research now shows that consumer have purchased 2.7 million Blu-ray players in the North America region as of November 24th. Additionally, US sales of Blu-ray titles topped 4 million units in November, taking just over two months to achieve the new milestone.

This new data dwarfs reports from the HD DVD group stating the format had sold 750,000 players by a factor of over 7-to-2. Interestingly enough, sales of Blu-ray software sold at a similar rate for the week ending November 25th.
Thats a lot of people using the PS3 to buy movies. But I guess gamers don't buy movies and 750,000 > 2.7 million becasue of attach rates. ;)
And Hidefdigest has this up too, but their site stopped working so I linked Blu-ray.com

And aww, I wanted to Celine Dion air guitar to AC/DC so I could puke.
