Only if you tell me why you called me Kevin.
Home Alone popped in my head though.
you can't add me because i still haven't picked up the new 360 :), i'll let you know
Despite all the ads on LIVE for a pay service, it's a good system.
I dunno...the more I use it, the more I get annoyed by its cumbersome design. I like the classy simplicity of the XMB vs. the cluttered, unstable mess that's the 360 dash.

I bet Peter Bracke is thankful he won't have to watch TWO entire discs of the same footage, like he had to do with the "TOTO" concert HD/BD.

I predict the following sales for that disc: 7 BD, 3 HD. ;)
I dunno...the more I use it, the more I get annoyed by its cumbersome design. I like the classy simplicity of the XMB vs. the cluttered, unstable mess that's the 360 dash.
As soon as PSN gets in-game XMB, I won't even give Live a second thought.

I meant good system as in it's easy to invite and get things started.
LIVE itself is butt ugly, I agree.
As for me...
Same here. Home seems like such a huge waste of resources. They should have put their efforts towards in game XMB/friends list and an more traditional achievement system.
As for me...
If they can do anything like this user describes, I see a use in Home.

I think what a lot of people don't understand about HOME is that it can give users early -and interactive - access to content.

Take a hotly anticipated game: say FFXIII. Now let's say Square releases a website for it. People may head over there, take a look, maybe see a few pictures, movies and features and move on.

Now lets say that Square releases a Home space for FFXIII. Here you can get a realtime look at what kind of environments, 3d models, music, whatever is in store for the game. You can check it out, discuss the game with other visitors (who obviously have the same interest), try some interactive section if Square chooses. Maybe even take a piece of the game with you via a t-shirt or trophy. That makes the place so much more alive then a website.

I could see hype for a homespace be almost as big as when the game itself gets released.

Crap, what thread am I in!

Have you used Home? IIRC, I did a gameshare w/ dallow a bit back and he tried to d/l the Home beta, but it wouldn't work.

I'd rather see the abilities put into the XMB - I'm not interested in going to someone's trophy room in Home to see what their 'accomplishments' are.

EDIT: dallow, that all sounds well and good, but it's still putting a shiny coat of paint on what should simply be a fuller XMB experience: chat rooms, viewing accomplisments, in-game XMB, etc. The "FFXIII shirt" idea makes me think of the promised 360 microtransactions where user-created content would be sold to other users.

Having little 'world's for big games seems cool though.
If you can get exclusive stuff from it.

Nah, never got to use Home with your gameshare. I hear it's pretty dry.
Quick question, have you tried LIVE? If not, try it before you keep knocking it. It is worth the $4 and change a month.

But then you go on stating gimped version of GTA4... you're a 360 hater. If you knew what was the issues it was both systems, not just one. You know who wins? Those like me who own both and try both. Both have their merits and their downfalls. I think you might want to try 1 day without putting on those Sony 4D glasses

but... BACK ON TOPIC... I'm surprised LG is continuing their support for HD DVD
I know that live is good, I'm just too cheap to pay for it... its hard for me to slap a free service in the face by going off and paying for a service that does essentially the same thing. My thing about the version of GTA IV that we're all getting is that if MS would have incorporated a HD DVD drive into the 360, or a blu ray drive (not likely though) I think we would have gotten more than a DVD's worth of game from GTA IV. Maybe GTA IV could have been in full 1080p, or maybe it could have more textures, more environments. I'm basically saying that we could have more game out of GTA IV if both MS would have had a next gen drive in their system. [I'm only being optimistic, the devs of course could have chosen not to utilize the benefits of HD-DVD and Blu ray discs.

Blu ray/HD DVD players are a good investment right now... at least you can cash in on some cheap HD DVDs.

Except when Live is down for 2 months with no explanation and a crap game given as "compensation". I've been just as happy with PSN as I was with Live when it was working.

So what are the odds some of the released or soon to be released hd-dvds will become rare and worth some cash? Even some laser disks still comand a few bucks.

Sorry if my post isn't about video games. I still want to talk about HDM.

I suspect Pan's will be pretty big for three reasons, one being exclusive to the U.S.: 1.Exclusive content to my knowledge with the web bit. 2.It's the ONLY U.S. HD DVD title to use DTS-MA 3.It's the only HD DVD that I know of, unless someone wishes to correct me, that has 7.1, Lossless specifically.

edit: King Dox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now is a good time to look for a really cheap Upscaling DVD player as most HDDVD players did this and they will be dirt cheap.

a company called surround records put out about 6 or 7 hd dvd's with DTS-MA and a couple had 7.1. they were mostly high def images that cycled with music

warner also had a james taylor hd dvd with DTS-MA

but as far as movies, Pan's is the only one that i know of US or international

Ok thanks for the correction.

edit: I think those Ballet or one of em' from the BBC may have it too. Anyone seen "The Lawless" on HD DVD back in stock anywhere?

I've only experienced serious LIVE issues for like 4 days. There was intermittent connection problems but nothing too crazy. It's not as bad as you say it was and I myself dealt with more issues connecting and playing Warhawk then that whole time frame of LIVE outages. Note though, I was very busy with work at that time though so not as much gaming. But I feel you on the crappy compensation. I'ld much rather get MS points and let me pick n choose what I want.
HDDVD funeral on Attack of the Show today. lool
I saw it last night. It was funny lol. They said people were liking you, and then you turned your back on them and sided with porn. shame on you HD DVD, shame on you

i dont think we are anywhere near having digital downloads being mainstream.. Even though i can imagine a world where we dont have to purchase physical media anymore, i dont think ppl can take advantage of that at the current time.

In the other hand though its working for music and to an extent games (steam)

toshiba needs to just shut up

I think digital downloads are a while off, but maybe not as far off as some people think.

Especially for renting movies, buying might be different, but by the time the majority of people have high def TV's I could see it becoming a realistic alternative to physical media.

That is just my humble opinion of course.

We are moving toward digital downloads but theres going to be people that always want a hard copy of their purchases.

Then again lets say you have a shit load of games. I must have like 100 xbox 1 games. Dont you wish you can store those somewhere digitally without having to store them in your closet or whatever?

Steam ,xbla, and psn i think are going in the right direction. I can purchase a game. I can then even delete it and then redownload it at any time.
Steam ,xbla, and psn i think are going in the right direction. I can purchase a game. I can then even delete it and then redownload it at any time.
This is nice and all, but ONLY if I can redownload it again in 50 years.

Much in the same way I'd pull out my old Atari games from time to time.

i think it'll be sad when dvds and everything else physical-media related goes away...they look so nice on the shelf...given they take up a shit ton of room..i've always had this dream of having an entire room full of my dvds and games...i mean c'mon...how awesome woul dthat be?! plus..how are they going to incorporate all the extras into digital downloads? like director commentary, music videos, etc.? NEED OPINIONS HERE!!!

Uh... it's really not that hard to send a full digital version of the movie complete with menus and extras over a digital stream.

I think Toshiba is right and I've been saying it all along. This generation of media will not be as long-lived as CD/DVD.

Digital distribution is the future. I personally hate that I have to store copies of all of my media. I would much prefer to have it all digital, and let someone else handle the backups of that data.

I think you are exaggerating greatly .

Do you have cable TV ?
Did Toshiba really say this?

"Toshiba claims that Sony’s victory in the high definition disc format war will be short lived due to the rise of HD digital video downloads over broadband, which the company claims was one of the key reason for abandoning HD DVD."

Digital downloads are way off, just to bittorrent a 700 MB DVD rip at a lower resolution still takes hours with a high speed internet connection. I can only imagine how much it would take to download a 25 Gig HD quality movie file. Let alone have the hard drive space to store several movies. Internet speeds need to increase dramatically for this to happen and by the time they do, BluRay will have run it's course.
Juno makes my stomach turn, but a new release is a new release.
Really? The dialogue is a bit forced in spots, but it was a cute movie overall with an amazing soundtrack. What didn't you like about it?

i can download and extract a 700 mb dvd rip in about 4 minutes if i download it off of newsgroups

I hate forced dialogue with a passion so it really just tainted most of it for me.

From GDC, MS's keynote:

10:08
Ha ha, this was great. Shane just overheard two Microsoft execs sitting next to him talking about the death of HD-DVD. One asked the other, "So has Blu-ray really won?"

what i don't understand is how digital is really going to turn a profit with all the torrenting and downloading of movies going on??!!...agreed dvds/hd dvds/blu-ray discs are all burnable...but digitally downloading movies sounds like a much more dangerous market...
i can download and extract a 700 mb dvd rip in about 4 minutes if i download it off of newsgroups
That's fine for you but by and large broadband access and speed is atrocious in the US.

And then ISPs want to get more aggressive with download caps? So you not only will be paying big bucks without even getting the privilege of a physical copy but you'll be chewing up bandwidth costs as well? Sorry, I want my discs, dammit.

I think many people will download digital media if given a convenient way to do it. look at Itunes napster(the original one) was out way before it and Itunes makes a good profit. The broad band rates will improve just like the adaption rate of HDTV is going to improve. I think most of the companies that have internet caps do so because of pressure from big media.

Sorry but this is just a stupid comparison. Music downloads are faster. You can also pick the songs you like instead of having to pay full price just to get the 1 or 2 songs from an album.

lost in the shuffle has been the slow and steady trouncing of lcds over plasmas. lcd has just recently taken the crt tv crown while plasma sells a piddling 7% of market.
lcd fanboys everywhere are guzzling champagne
