Ergo, video and audio quality are important, and there's little impetus to create foolscreen 16:9 pan & scan crops of scope content.
To put things into perspective, LaserDisc was a "medium" niche. It lasted 20 years, and had 41,000 movies available. Any changes to the format were all about improving the presentation, not pandering to the lowest common denominator. If something like that (albeit on a larger scale) is the future of HDM, I'm fine with it.
