Anyway, I got the wheel from my Buy.com order today. First impression:
The damn box is the Rubix Cube of packaging. It's quite a marvel to unpack.
The wheel itself is quite sturdy. Nothing about it feels plasticky (sp?) or cheap. In fact, it's go quite a bit of heft to it. The wheel's got a nice thickness to it and the rubber material coating the top and sides of it are great.
To start off, I was trying to continue a racing series I was in using RWD Corvette. I got my ass handed to me. I couldn't complete a 3-lap race without spinning out. There's much finer throttle control using the pedals than is offered with the controller. There's some wicked bumps that you go over in Road Atlanta and if you time a press of the gas pedal right when you go over them it's spinning time for you. Needless to say, I was frustrated.
I had to make some concessions since I'd been playing with all assists off, manual transmission and Hard AI. Bumped it down to Medium and I was still ass-tacular.
Decided to give the FWD cars a try. Bumped all settings back to where I had 'em and wow. When you've got a great handling car, you can really feel it with this wheel. I ended up racing and completing the Class-D endurance race with not one single penalty. My lines, for the most part, were oh-so smooth, which I found quite difficult to do with the controller. It's so much easier to hit your spots lap in and lap out using this.
The paddle shifters have some great pull to them (unlike the Logitech GT3 wheel I had prior). I do wish they were able to put a POV/right joystick on the wheel so I can still look around using that. I race using the 1st person cam with the rearview, but there's still some large blind spots using that. The lack of the R-stick also means you can't pan around cars to look at them when you've won them, but that's a minor inconvenience.
If you're thinking the wheel is gonna make the game any easier though, think again. It's not that it makes it harder. It just makes it more challenging, mostly with throttle and brake control. It's quite easy to make quick changes in your brake and throttle using your fingers, but you really have to get used to them if you haven't.
