Haven't tried it. It has low system requirements so most will be able to play.

Rose Online
Just started this one. It may turn you off because the graphics are really kiddy but it is actually kinda fun. Reminds me of the smurfs, but gameplay is pretty entertaining.

I'm not that big of an MMORPGer. If you are, you probably won't like these. These games are for people like me who occasionally like to play them but don't want to pay the monthly fees.

Any others. There is also runescape which is a flash type MMORPG.

Edit: Ok this one is not completely free, but has no monthly fees.

You can also try Guildwars. No monthly fee. Just have to buy it. Comes out in April. Only a couple more beta weekends to go for people who have preordered the game.

Also you can continue to play without needing any of the expansions they come out with. You just do not get to play with any new stuff unless you pair up with someone who has bought the expansion. Think they were shooting for an expansion pack like every 9 months or so. Heard this a while back so not sure if they changed any of it.

Not a MMORPG in the traditional sense, but pretty darn close. Very easy to play and a whole lot of fun. This game allows you to solo or pair up with people (up to 4 other ppl for quests and such).

I think your right. Did not think about it until you brought it up.

Conquer Online all the way!!! Sweet and easy gameplay, keeps ya going and is kinda like D2 with the skills system (right click to use a skill, left click to attack).

But in order to get the new contents in other MMORPG you need to buy the expansions. So Guild Wars is good in that respect.

Is Guild Wars a true MMORPG where there is a persisting world with lots of people or is it just like Diablo 2 where you put a few people together for a game at a time. Without charging a monthly fee will Guild Wars be as good as other MMORPGs where monthly fee is charged? With no fees charged how is the company going to pay for the updates, that will erode their profits.

Is Anarchy Online still free to play? It is also free to download from their own website right? But the screen shots of the game don't look that interesting to me so I don't have the urge to install and play it.

There's some Dragon game,... where you take the from of beasts, and just hang out, and chill.

It's more of a lounge.

I'll have to find it.
It's free.

Wait wait, you can only pair up with four other people? Which means there can only be a total of five people in a party? That doesn't sound fun. :(

Kingdom of Loathing is good quick fun, runs entirely in your browser, and is pretty hilarious. You can go to the 8bit realm and fight Bullet Bills. Entirely free, but if you donate $10, you get some neet items.

"This Bullet has arms. I assume that means it will first punch someone before shooting them, or maybe after. I guess it doesn't matter either way."

The game is kind of both ways.

In towns you have a large number of people. Not sure how many characters per instance (the towns have duplicates to help spread people around).

There is a solo area which of course you can go by yourself or group in town (5 in a party, it was 6 at one time). You can also take computer "henchmen" to fill out your party.

Quest areas are the same as the solo area, but it moves the story along. Group up with other people and/or henchmen to tackle on the quest. You could also solo it, but some of them have a huge number of creatures and stuff.

There are also PvP arenas so that groups of people can see how well they match up. Guildwars is not to much about level grinding as it is in using the right combination of skills you earn, buy, etc. You do level grind abit, but it does not seem that bad compared to some games.

It can be considered a Diablo clone, but it looks a heck of alot better. Ever time I discovered a new area, I was always impressed in the scenery. The overall design of the game is very good.

As for the profit side of it, I think they are counting on the expansion packs to help support the game. Bug fixes will come when people need them. They have been extremely quick with fixes during the beta weekends so far. The expansions will move the story along with more quests and such. I'm pretty sure they have a couple exp. packs already laid out.

Theres a Korean MMORPG that I used to play thats free. MU...

Crappy GFX, but its kinda fun. I cant remember the site, but just google MU ONLINE.

You do miss out that feeling of being around alot of other people.

Though with the party being able to concentrate on the quests, it makes it more fun to me. Looting is set where what drops is assigned to whoever and only that person can pick it up. Unless you leave it alone for abit (where a timer expires) and then anyone can pick it up. Gold is shared equally.

Some of the quests I have seen are really long. The solo area is mostly the whole map (which the quests are placed in their corresponding area on the map).

It is a very fun game imho.

The other online game I play is WW2Online. That is where I get my large numbers (of people) fix. There is a free 14 day trial for that too! :p
i'm waiting for some guild wars. i'd rather not pay a monthly fee for a game. does anyone know if this will "somewhat work" on a 56k?

yeah, itz so uncool, but i don't play online much.

here's some wallpaper, although the whole website is taking too long to download. tell me if it works...
http://www.guildwars.com/gallery/wallpaper/
Not sure how well it works on 56k. I have dsl. I'll be sure to ask around at the next beta weekend (next weekend woot!!!) if anyone is on dialup.

-Many MMORPGs offer new content via regular updates without the need to buy an expansion pack (though expansions offer content you can't get otherwise)
-In order to get new content in Guild Wars, you HAVE to buy the expansions (it's how they will make money), so I'm not sure what you're trying to get at.

And to respond to the bit about Anarchy Online, I believe the basic game is still free.

For Guild Wars you can have up to 8 people in a party, plus npc companions like ranger beasts and necro skels.

As far as new content, they will have expansion packs, but you don't need to get them to continue playing. You do need the pack to get the stuff, but not to play... atleast thats how I read it.

GUild War's plays fine over 56k but you have a tendancy to get left behind when loading new stages (atleast during the beta) I would start an instanced mission with some friends and they would be 100 yards ahead of me before I got on the field.
Do I have to pay for online updates, such as patches?

There are no hidden fees. You will not have to pay for the streaming updates that will take place on a regular basis, nor for additional content that we will provide between the chapters of Guild Wars.
Am I required to buy the expansion packs to continue to play Guild Wars?

No. Every purchase you make in the continuation of the Guild Wars saga will be your choice. If you purchase expansion packs you will gain access to new regions of the world, new skills and abilities, new items, new professions, and much more. However, if you choose to not purchase a chapter, you will still be able to play the chapters of Guild Wars that you own, and you will have common areas in which you will be able to play with and against your friends who have purchased the other chapter(s).
Will I remain competitive if I do not buy the expansion packs? Will I be able to compete with and against others if I have only some of the Guild Wars chapters?

Yes. Purchasing the newer chapters of Guild Wars will not make you strictly more powerful. You will have access to many more strategic options, due to the expanding nature of the skills, abilities, items and professions that you enjoy with each chapter. It would be similar to building a deck in Magic: The Gathering™: The more cards you own, the more different playing decks that you can choose from to use in the game. When you buy the chapters of Guild Wars, you will acquire a larger collection of skills and abilities from which to build your skill set, but you will not gain more power. So if you purchase a chapter and your friend does not, you will still be able to play competitively against and with one another.

Nice work Kayden!

Can anyone recommend an MMORPG that has no fees and is structered similar to runescape in that your character can do other stuff besides fight. I liked the idea that you could go fishing, mine, craft, cook, etc..

Nice find! Guess there really is a website for everything. :D

Might have to try some of the games that have been pointed out. If you could not tell, I'm waiting impatiently for Guildwars to come out. Been playing ww2online since it came out. Tried Star Wars Galaxies and thought it was all right. Might try it again with the new expansion. I loved Earth and Beyond, but EA bought up Westwood and things went south from there. That game had so much potential.

Yea I was going to suggest that and that site is definately handy. Tantra, Gates to Heaven, ROSE, (use to be) Maple Story.

Blah MMORPG.. x.x sucked my life once.. it was pretty fun. Anyways for your MMORPG needs go there! Helped me quite a few times when boredom struck.

You and me both man...That WWIIOnline game looks pretty cool, with all the battles on the map and stuff...how does it play though? I've never even heard of it...

And isn't there a free MMORPG out where you can make money from playing it? You like earn these points and then cash em into a bank account (or was it Paypal?). i wanted to try that one, lost the link tho...It was the same game where some guy paid like $10,000 for virtual real estate in it, I think.

WW2Online is a massively multiplayer war game. It has been out for 4 or 5 years now. Did not start out real good, but only gets better and better. You can fly, which ranges from fighters to bombers. Drive tanks of varying sizes. Trucks, antitank guns, anti-air guns, and infantry of varying descriptions. All play from the first person perspective.

Modeled after the real world counterparts. So if your in a tank, you have to change gears while in the drivers seat. Tanks have several positions which can be shared with other people. Same with aircraft and so on. Think they still need work in this area, but all equipment can be used solo. Can switch positions to use the gun on the tank for instance.

They mostly used western and northern part of France, Belgium, part of Germany, and some of England for the map right now. Can not remember the scale, but distance between towns is pretty good and hell if your on foot. :)

One hit can kill you. This is as close to realistic. They are trying very hard to make everything accurate. Has a supply system now. Can bomb factories in different cities to reduce production output of the enemy.

Infantry is alot of fun. Can be a rifleman or any of the machine gun types. They have added airborne troops not to long ago.

Buildings in the game look alright, just do not expect anything out of Call of Duty and such. Serves their purpose. Can go in most buildings and some of these buildings are capture points that help you seize control of a town and vice versa.

Just realized how much I got into this. The game is based on working with your side (German against the British and French) to capture towns and kill the enemy. There is alot more, but its probably better to try it or read up on it at the WW2Online website.

This game is very much a sim and very realistic. You need a good machine to run it also. Make sure you have plenty of ram for the most part.

very low reqs, runs great over dialup, gameplay is addictive, quests are involving and the chat interface is absolutely perfect. The social interaction will keep you playing long after you get bored of grinding.

Kind of cool. Been actually playing a lot of free MMORPGs as of late, as well as to my City of Heroes/Villians. I've been really likin' Flyff. Rakion is so-so, but most of the ones I like have already been mentioned.

Scions of fate is coming out of closed beta in like a week. It's more popular in china then wow supposedly. Its SD ancient china if you like that sort of thing.

Not very solo friendly, but still fun and one of the better free mmorpgs.
I'd also reccommend 9dragons for a realistic ancient china feel.
All the Korean games are really grind heavy though. They feel really tedious after a while.

Nothing still beats anarchy online for free quality game though i think.
