PS3 Firmware Version 1.80 Announced

Latest PLAYSTATION 3 Firmware Update Provides PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and DVD Upscaling

Remote Play on PSP (PlayStation Portable) via the Internet and DLNA transfer of media content also enabled

London, 24 May 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation® and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.

The capability to upscale DVDs to HD quality is a feature normally only associated with top range DVD players, and its inclusion in the latest firmware upgrade now allows PS3 owners with an existing DVD collection to dramatically enhance the viewing pleasure of their DVD collection when viewed through a compatible HD TV set1. Not only can DVD movies be enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.

In a comprehensive update to PS3’s already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.

Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3’s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.

A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3’s hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.

PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.

Notes

1. DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) can only be upscaled with HDMI compatible TV sets.

2. Use of Remote Play requires a powered up PS3 with Version 1.80 as well as PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of May.

3. DLNA – Digital Living Network Alliance. For more info on DLNA, please see http://www.dlna.org/en/consumer/home

[UPDATE]

GameDaily

[UPDATE] SCEA has now confirmed that firmware 1.8 will be released tomorrow in North America as well. "As adoption of HDTVs continues to surge, we know that consumers are hungry for content, and this latest firmware update leverages the PS3's technology to deliver an HD-quality experience using the entertainment media already in your collection," said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing, SCEA. "In addition, we continue to enhance the PS3's capabilities as an entertainment hub, giving consumers the option to bring their content with them on-the-go, or to stream photos, videos, and music stored on their PC to the PS3 in their living room. That's often where the largest TV monitor and sound system is located, giving consumers the best possible entertainment experience."

It should be noted that upscaling of games is possible over component cables, while upscaling of DVD movies does require the HDMI connection. As for using the PSP to access media on your PS3, users will first need to update the PSP to firmware 3.50, which is slated to come out next week.

And finally, one other detail not mentioned in the European release is that users can now copy saved data from PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format software stored on their PS3 system to a Memory Card or Memory Card (8MB), using their PS3 system and a Memory Card Adaptor.

So we've gone from 2.0 to 1.8? But it's confirmed. And 1080p is nice. I guess I'll be spending a lot of time on my bro's PS3 while he's gone for the next week.

Whoa, holy crap, it'll upscale PSX and PS2 games too?

YES!

I wonder if by some magic, it'll upscale 720 only games like Resistance and Motorstorm to 1080. Crossing my fingers for you DPatel.
I didn't read where it said PS1 games. Maybe I could finish FF7 now since it looks so bad nowadays.
read again ^__^. Sony finally do something right. Can't wait to check this out tomorrow.
I didn't read.
Fixed.

Not only can DVD movies be enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.

Upscaled PS2 games? :D Give us the update now!

wait....upscaling only to 1080p, or does it do 720p and 1080i as well?
wait....upscaling only to 1080p, or does it do 720p and 1080i as well?
It better do them as well or heads will fly.
wait....upscaling only to 1080p, or does it do 720p and 1080i as well?
It should. I mean, when you play 1080P games it seems to handle displaying 1080I even though it doesn't mention that. So my guess that since it can do 1080P it'll also do all the other settings. Though we can only hope they come out fitting on the screen just as well.

So streaming media from my PC to my HDTV with my PS3?
Good.

A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3’s hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.
Kinda neat feature I'll never use.

Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available.

Ooooh, I want to test this out!
This will be nice, and give me good reason to take out my PSP more often.

I wonder if you can access the PS3 via internet, and then stream media from the PC to the PS3 to the PSP.
Hehe, probably not. :)
It should. I mean, when you play 1080P games it seems to handle displaying 1080I even though it doesn't mention that. yeah-- I don't care what resolution it's in if I have to play it in 4:3 stretched on a pan n' scan screen

Oh and this streaming media--- AVI support?

I'm assuming 480p/720p/1080i are in there too. If not, then why update it? Plus, it's only available through the HDMI cable. Maybe that's only for movies, but I'm not sure.

Besides the PSP thing, what's the point? But this COULD boost sales from lasat month.

and HDMI only better mean HDMI only for 1080p. If component doesn't work, that'll kill my joy.
It says "up to full 1080p", so horrible 1080i confirmed?
"up to" could mean two different things.
and HDMI only better mean HDMI only for 1080p. If component doesn't work, that'll kill my joy.
Yeah me too. I only have one HDMI slot and my DirecTV uses that.

Originally, I envisioned much bitching about the PS3 having to be on to access Remote Play while somewhere else, but now I wonder if you can be folding and still access it. That would be great.

However, I'm sure IGN and such will have a witty smart ass comment about this update. Bashing PS3 is super cool!

You know, I've started to see those HDMI port boxes where you can put up to 3 HDMI cords into a single unit. A switcher basically. A little inconvenient, but still, it'd work.
You know, I've started to see those HDMI port boxes where you can put up to 3 HDMI cords into a single unit. A switcher basically. A little inconvenient, but still, it'd work.
HDMI ports are premium retail space, so it'd probably be a good idea.
and HDMI only better mean HDMI only for 1080p. If component doesn't work, that'll kill my joy.
Your joy is killed. I don't believe anything besides HDMI can upscale....well other then VGA and DVI.

So now we can network our PS3 and PC the way the 360 and PC do? Great! because the PS3 had a larger list of movie types it can play... I think.
Your joy is killed. I don't believe anything besides HDMI can upscale....well other then VGA and DVI.
Component can upscale. Don't know if PS3 will allow it though.

dammit sony...forcing me into getting a nice LCD and shiz.

question: wouldn't higher resolutions mean more obvious jaggies though?
dammit sony...forcing me into getting a nice LCD and shiz.

NM I was wrong. Component can upscale. We have to play the waiting game to see if Sony is gonna do that though.
NM I was wrong. Component can upscale. We have to play the waiting game to see if Sony is gonna do that though.
I think they will.
Although, 360 didn't offer it because of protection issues... so...

Wait... I might be confused.
I know component has no HDCP, so.. I might be mixing info up.
Anyone know why you can't upscale with component with 360?
NM I was wrong. Component can upscale. We have to play the waiting game to see if Sony is gonna do that though.
They won't, its I think its AACS or maybe CCS not sure on that part however part of the copy protection says the SD DVD cant only be upconverted over DVI/HDMI (VGA is fine also on some technicality) to a port that is HDCP complaint. Now Yes it can be done over analog and there some players out that will but like m$ I have no doubt that Sony will stick with the rule.
1080p upscaling for DVDs, PS2 and PS1 games. Whether or not the PS3 natively boosts the resolution of games isn't specified, but any form of upscaling should help soften the visual blows received from that fancy HDTV of yours. Upscaled DVD movies won't compare well to Blu-ray movies, but they'll tide you over until American Ninja 4 gets a release on Sony's format. Note that DVD movies can only be upconverted using an HDMI connection.
There you go. There's a rule about it.

But there's off-brand DVD players like the fantastic Oppo that WILL do it anyway over component.
So pretty sure this will be HDMI only.

mmm I hope games will look like those FFX12 shots we saw before...... smooth :D
Oh yeah on another note I don't get remote play at all. Even at a local network in my apartment it runs choppy as hell. I don't see how it could possibly perform decently online.

And Oppo players have fucking bad ass picture quality, to boot.

In other news, looks like PS3 purchasing time has moved a bit sooner for me.

Firmware 1.80 also enables users on a home network to use the PS3 to view images, listen to music or play videos, which are stored on their DLNA3 devices (including PCs and laptops) elsewhere in the house.

That is what I miss most about my old xbox and XBMC. That is huge. I was going to install linux, just to get that functionality back. Now I don't have to.

It would be sweet if it used the NFS protocol, or even SMBFS. But what the heck is DLNA3?

~S

I was playing Crash on the PS3 (You know the verson you DL.) And I was amazed on how good it looked for a PS1 game. Do they upscale those or something? Its very clean and smooth...

Weird.
Oh yeah on another note I don't get remote play at all. Even at a local network in my apartment it runs choppy as hell. I don't see how it could possibly perform decently online.
If it runs smoothly enough, I think it could be huge. Depending on how it works too.

I mean, you'll have a "virtual memory stick" if it streams data through the air. As an example, you could actually have EVERY song you own basically there with you without worrying about which to stuff into your memory stick.
Can you only remote play with a 60gb PS3 with its wireless built in???
No, you can remote play with the 20GB also. Have to have a wireless router though. Though for this, I doubt you will need that even.

Answered my own question.

Googling DLNA3 turns up nothing but the press release. But if you google DLNA 3, you will learn that DLNA is a form of UPnP. Esentially what the 360 has for streaming media. Too bad, I just want NFS , or SMBFS, I don't want to have to run some additional server on my storage server, or some special operating system....

This news might soften the blow of MGS4 and FF13 not being there this fall. Although I still think MGS4 will be out somewhere by fall.
Updated the first posts but it looks like you can use component cables for upscaling the games but only HDMI for DVDs.
Oooh, that makes sense. No rule breaking there!

And finally, one other detail not mentioned in the European release is that users can now copy saved data from PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format software stored on their PS3 system to a Memory Card or Memory Card (8MB), using their PS3 system and a Memory Card Adaptor.

NICE!

ok I only read the first paragraph and that got me all giddy.

1080p ff12!

.....oh but wait I don't have a HD tv or monitor :(
will it do 720p instead?!
