FW 1.8 out now on Network update!

No way, even the crappiest Blu-Ray image blows away the best reference upscaled DVD.

Color, clarity and sound are all greatly enhanced.

Upscaled image:

Blu-Ray

There was a neat site that had flash images you could roll over and see the difference as you moved from left to right, revealing the clearer BD image over Upscaled DVD, I'll post it when I find it again.
It was pretty cool.
Quick question-- if you use a media server, will it play .avi files?
Nope, sorry. I tried.

I said for ME it's fine ;)

I can't see spending 30.00 on Casino Royale, when I can buy it on DVD for 6.00 used.

Oh, and how would I go about converting .AVI files to something I can play on the PS3?
Hehe, gotcha Sean.

Here's that site anyway.

Or just http://xylon.haloapplications.com/ to see more comparisons, it's fun!

Converting AVI.. I use WinAVI Video Converter. A lot of people do, it's FREEware and quite good.
Best to convert them to MPGs.
Thanks. Once I get to college, I'm turning my PS3 into a media center, because it will be hooked up to a 22 LCD monitor :D

I love this firm-ware update!

Actually, I take back what I said.
With tweaking and a couple programs, you can play just about ANY type of movie file on the PS3 using DLNA
You'll need some video decoders that you probably already have installed.

And a program like this one: TVersity. www.tversity.com

There's a huge discussion with tips, etc on this thread:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158357

.

More info about TVersity.

It basically transcodes the movies on the fly into MPEG2 for viewing on the PS3. Helps if you're PC is a little speedy.

Also, something else about the update, it seems to have changed the way audio is sent out.
There are a number of games that now display DTS instead of regular Dolby Digital.

NBA2K7, NHL2K7, the new Tiger Woods, Fear, perhaps more.

Update gets better and better.

^ Ah thanks for adding the DTS part. Last night I played NFS Carbon and Fight Night and I remember thinking that I had never noticed DTS before.

So I wonder if DTS is actually enabled or something is tricking the receiver into thinking it is. I am not a pro in that world.

Thanks for the link. I gave TVersity a 10 minute try a long time ago and didn't get it running, but with the amount of anime and tv shows I just snagged, I'd rather do that than burn 5000 dvds :)

Doesn't sound like... it's strange. Someone else has commented he doesn't hear a difference from Digital 5.1.
The games aren't advertised as being DTS, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Still, it fixed some audio problems for others.

I could kill TVersity right now...

it'll play everything except AVIs that use Xvid MPEG4 and MP3 audio??? that's like the most basic filetype and I definitely have codecs for it.
Ok, so I have a mac, so winavi wont work for me.

Any mac programs to convert .avi files to watch on the PS3??
You've got a number of options with the Mac. What format do you need? To convert from .avi files, I usually use QuickTime Pro, but it's not free. You can also try iSquint (free) or VisualDub (not free).

I also use QT Pro (not free..... shhhh)

Look at what you can do with the new PSP FW.
3.50FW legit, or wait for Dark Alex to come up with his own.

Damn, DLNA streaming works on the PSP!

So you're streaming from your PC, to the PS3, to the PSP!

Screens and quotes of someone using it.

And an episode of Seinfeld streaming from my PC to my PS3 over the internet and to my PSP:

You can see the Nero MediaHome watermark in the upper-left corner.

PC -> PS3 -> Internet -> PSP, so awesome

Portable media center!!!!
Damn, anywhere I have internet, I'll have access to my movies, music, and pictures. This is incredible.

C'mon Dark Alex!
iSquint seems to only be for the iPod..I need to convert the .AVI files to whatever can be played on the PS3.
It's not only for the iPod, though it's marketed that way. It output mp4 files in the correct resolution for an iPod but the file itself is a standard mp4. Again, I don't know what format the PS3 needs but I'd imagine it's mp4. Another app you might want to try is Handbrake.

Totally. My Mac is now serving all my tunes and videos... Take that, Media Center PCs! ;)

Now I can save disk space by not storing MP3's on my PS3... :)

Of course I'm going to put a 120GB in there when I get the time....

I could only get twonky to stream my mp3s. Does it not do aac (non protected, not iTunes Store) files? If not, it's pretty much useless to me.
Hey, could someone please tell me:

Do you need the 60gb PS3 in order to connect wirelessly to the PS3 using your PSP? Since it has the Wireless built in??

Id be so mad if it does.
Not anymore.

But you do need a wireless router connected to your network.
Which you must have anyway if you use your PSP to get online at home.

Oh... I heard that the PSP can connect to the PS3 without the need of a Wireless router, it just connects to the PS3 through its Wifi.

He has it backwards. The PSP can connect to the 20GB via a wireless router, not via the PS3's wifi (which the 20GB doesn't have).
