FW 1.8 out now on Network update!
Oooh, that makes sense. No rule breaking there!
I'm thinking there is sarcasm here, however your right there is no rule breaking for games only Video.
ok I only read the first paragraph and that got me all giddy.

1080p ff12!

.....oh but wait I don't have a HD tv or monitor :(
will it do 720p instead?!
I'm guessing if it can do 1080p, it can do all resolutions below it. I have no problem playing 1080p games and movies on my 1080i TV.

this post confuses me...

if you dont have a hd tv or monitor then you will get the standard 480i

Nah, no sarcasm. I hadn't thought about it really.

Hmm. You know, I'm probably not going to see much a difference.
My TV scales the image already. So unless the PS3 does a better job of it, I won't be able to tell the difference at all.

oh sorry..i meant to say that I don't have a 1080p capable set. I use component cables via vga box to my 20" lcd monitor that can handle 720p max. 1080i/p, though the box can handle it, my monitor can't :(

BTW, I also can't wait to hear the IGN Team spin this is in a negative light. "Ohh wow, you get all these cool features, there still aren't any games!" or some crap like that.

their still aren't any games!

Are there? Even sony said there is a drought of new stuff to play, which is why system sales were down last month, and the next month is not any better. I love Motorstorm, but there is only so much you can play one game (ok maybe two with Calling All Cars).

As for the update. I am looking forward to seeing how well it upconvert's DVD's compared to the HD-XA1 HDDVD player.

There are not, but adding even more value to the PS3 by giving it these functionalities and constantly updating the PS3 are a good thing IMO and are unrelated to the gaming side, and they will always try and find the negative in something.

Well your right features are nice but why to you buy a gaming console? To play games.. And on top of that you can get a nice very nice upconvert DVD player for 150.00 and a good one for under 100.00. And blu ray and HD DVD players upconvert out of the box. At least in my opinion the PS3 should have been out of the box.

I hope it is at least as good as a Samsung upconvert I have but I feel that it wont be. Keep in mind that scaler will be software not hardware like an Oppo. If anything it will "help" your TV but don't expect much but anything will be better than the current DVD playback.

And there goes my theory about Sony holding back on DVD upscaling in order to push Blu-ray. I seriously thought we would never see DVD upscaling, in order to make BD look that much better.
If it runs smoothly enough, I think it could be huge. Depending on how it works too.

I mean, you'll have a "virtual memory stick" if it streams data through the air. As an example, you could actually have EVERY song you own basically there with you without worrying about which to stuff into your memory stick.
I see the potential, but the problem is when I was playing video wirelessly in my local network it was incredibly laggy and choppy even then. When you do it over the internet it'll be even worse.

Finally.

Took them bloody long enough...now all I need is my firmware fix for my Samsung TV, and I'll be set.

Time to take a vacation from work :applause:

I wonder how soon we'll see another jump in the value of FFVII after this :)

I don't know much about upscaling, and I don't have a hdtv or ps3 yet, but if this provides a significant improvement in older games and DVDs I may not be able to wait a few years for a few price drops...

Odin fucking Sphere. And after tomorrow, it can be run in HD. :bouncy:

On the pure PS3 front, I still have some catching up to do on what I own before we get hit with Ninja Gaiden: Sigma & Lair in July. And then Stranglehold in early August. And then the fall hits, and I really become broke.

fuckING SONY.

I just started Star Ocean: TtEoT. 16 hours in, and what do I find out?

The bloody battle trophy data is copy protected, and it won't transfer to my PS3.

Thanks for wasting my time, Squeenix. Now I have to start over on my upscaling PS3 tomorrow.

..........bastards. :bomb:

I suppose, but don't both GoW games offer progressive scan already? It's going to be the games that don't offer, and how well they upscale, that gets me excited.

Now MS needs to counter with DVD upscaling of their own, as the Xbox 360, nor the HD DVD drive, upscales DVDs at all (I believe).

1080i (no p for me) FF12 makes me want to play it all over again; if only the fucking PS3 was fully region-free, then I could play FFXII International (with a whole new job system!) when it comes out).

Why is it Japan gets all the nifty remixes to games (see FFX Int'l and Kingdom Hearts: Final Mixes), and we get shit on?

Hey Squeenix! We'll buy remakes! Hell, we'll buy damn near everything.

Over VGA and HDMI.. DL 1.80 NOW

This update should allow nullriver to make a product like they've got for the 360 to stream iTunes to the PS3. They make Connect360 and it's a decent application. With the DLNA stuff, it should be a piece of cake for them.

I'm updating too, anyone know how big the DL file is? I hate my slow DSL here >_< Can't wait untill I get to decide which internet service to buy (where I'm renting at now the guy who owns it only does the $15 a month DSL crap from Verizon).

Anyone here DL this using FIOS? if so, how long did it take you? how fast is it going?

As you can see I have a almost 20 mbps down and 1.5 up now. I have been downloading for about 2 min and I am at 12%

It can upscale DVDs. It's been able to for a long time.
damn someone beat me to it. YES new firmware is out now. Download it ASAP before SONY pull it
Hah they won't... Look at what time/day it is in Japan. :)

The system by itself cannot upscale the HD-DVD drive can. The Elite can also

Damn, can't try any games (JPN PS3) still region locked.

Tried a region free DVD, upscaling made it look really nice.

Also, the PS3 found my PC and now I'm able to stream to it, very easy after this update.
Dude your my hero :D
And yes, it'll be on a true 1080p TV via HDMI. Just need to pull the pics off without a flash somehow.

What are you using as a server for your computer? I am getting an error msg

Access to the media server is not allowed It is possible that the system name for the PS3 system PS3-956 has not been registered

upscale for FF 12 was only minimal. Rogue Galaxy looked to have huge improvements, rule of rose look much better as well, thats all I have tried so far. There is a smoothing option which helps some games but muddies the graphics in others.

I was just running Vista with them connected. Nothing special.

A popup came up on my PC and I chose to allow it.

Finish testing Metal Gear 2 . Looks very nice. Don't forget to set PS1/PS2 game option before you play the game or you won't get full screen. The option to set up is the same group as system update thingy. ^___^;

Turning on "progressive" mode in GoW2 makes my tv revert to 480p. Turning it off upscales to 1080i (the max my t.v. does). I haven't played GoW2 yet so I don't have anything to compare it to. MGS3 looks loads better, though.

I dont see the difference in normal vs. full screen though, maybe because my tv is widescreen but i get the same view for most games I have tried, anyone else know the difference
