Wonder what this means:
And in case anyone is still wondering: No, this update does not fix the scaling issue with 720p PS3 games.
Actually that question was already answered I believe where the issue was with the games and not the ps3. All future games supposedly will not have that issue.

whats the best setting under the DVD upscaler option? Double scale, normal or full screen? I have it set to double scale now, but I don't got the time to test it right now.

I tested out Shadow of the Colossus... the game looks a lot better when the ps3 is upscaling the game with the progressive scan off. I guess now I can go and get Odin sphere, and Okami... see how good they look.

I hope the AVS guys figure these settings out.

The GREAT thing about the DVD upscaling is that you can bring up the menu during the movie and change the settings on the fly.
Tinker with it.

When I had it on Double Scale, I had bars around the whole image, with Normal, it filled the screen up like it should.
Perhaps it helps with DVDs that have a lot of underscan to put it on Double Scale?

We'll find out more tomorrow.

From GAF:

Here's a test for people to see whether or not their display supports the new full range option or not.

First, save this image, and put it on a memory card or something so that you can view it on the PS3:

http://sr-388.net/images/patterns/Brightness.jpg

With the option set to limited, adjust the brightness control on your TV until you can see most/all of the boxes. There are 12 boxes there, but you might not be able to see them all. You should hopefully be able to see at least 9/10 of them.

Now switch it over to Full range. Can you still see all the boxes? It's very likely that you will only see a full black screen now if you're using a HDTV rather than a DVI monitor.

If you can turn up the brightness control and see the same number of boxes again, then it seems your display does support the full range. If it stays black, or you can't see as many boxes as before, your TV does not support the full range option and you should be using limited.

Most HDTVs should have it set to limited.
How to get Streaming media to work with Windows Media Player 11 (from PS forums):
Oh wow, my PS3 sees my computer, that was SIMPLE!

Damn, it's late, I'm off to bed now, this has been great fun.

I am so Confused. *cries*

And wtf is the media connector thing do? None of my pictures or videos work. And I dont even know where it is taking my videos from. And they all say, "Unsuported File"

So... what is supported?
Tested Ricky Bobby Blu-Ray in 720P too~ Oh man! wicked beautiful! I believe this is the best UPDATE for PS3!!
woo! Looks like I won't have to spend more money on a new monitor now! I'm watching my friend's copy of Ricky bobby on Blu-ray (when I bought my system they already stopped packing them in :( ) in 720p as we speak! It was ugly ugly 480p before.

I can start up my blu-ray collection now!

Wow, this is driving me to get a new TV soon. I have my Ps3 on a 26"LCD (has HDMI), while the 360 is on a 55" RPTV (only component). I would like to connect both to a new TV soon....maybe end of the year.

I could probably get rid up my stand alone DVD player also...since my PS3 SHOULD upconvert DVD over HDMI....correct? Interesting news.....plus, I can stream to both now...that is interesting.

Yes, with the update, DVDs will upconvert over HDMI. A stand alone DVD player is finally obsolete again! I'm currently using my Mac mini to be my DVD player but I'm going to try out the PS3 as one. Anyone know if the PS3 can be controlled by a fancy Universal Remote?

Best to use the Sony BT remote.

But if you need to use IR, and want something to control everything, the best (but not perfect) solution is this:

That's both heartening and disappointing. I really don't need another remote - I've got 6 already - but I don't like it when I can't get everything working either... Dilemmas, dilemmas. I'll have to do a side by side comparison of my mini's playback compared to the PS3 to see if it's worth the trouble.

Since I am not home I cant check but, how easy is it to network with your PC? Is it as easy as it is on the 360?

Anyone had any controller issues since the update? Maybe the fixed this?

The upscaling in PS2 titles looked phenomenal for me (tried about 30 seconds of Vice City Stories this morning, and I'm dying to see FFXII).

However, the DVD upscaling was really unimpressive for me. Again, I spent 30 seconds with it, and perhaps need to tinker with it some more. Keep in mind I am using HDMI, so I am able to upscale.

I can't wait to see some'a my BRs in 720p; too much artifacting and black flickering in 1080i.

There was also a SACD update not mentioned in the English log (but it was in the JP one)

I believe the bitmapping option enables DSD to be sent directly via HDMI. Good news!
Only makes sense if you're into SACDs.

Here's my take on the DVD upscaling.
I enable RGB output to Full. That looks a lot better, with everything properly adjusted.
Upscaling isn't a huge difference, probably because my screen size is so small.

HOWEVER.

More of the picture IS shown when upscaling on the Normal setting.
I see more picture on the edges of the screen than I do with upscaling Off, and Double Scale. Those two settings cut off bits of the movie.

I compared the exact frame.
It's easy because you can pause the DVD, hit Triangle and go to the image quality settings and change it all on the fly.

For this, I am truly grateful. I'm all about having the correct aspect ratios and seeing the full picture.

Forgive me for not reading the whole thread, but has anyone tried downloading the update off the website? I can't seem to get the newest update to download from the site. I do this for my friend since he does not have his internet connection set up yet.
so whats the verdict guys....

yay or nay
The internet is giving this a pretty big fucking yay.
1.8 has been causing my PS3 to freeze up a lot. 3 times since last night, and I've never had it freeze before then.
Uh, oh, freeze during what?

Looking at my friends list, looking at my demo list, looking at music list.

Pretty much, when I am using the XMB.

Seems like it's getting overloading with computer media. I might have to not have them connected anymore.
Anyone notice that you can control the XMB with the analog stick now? I'm almost positive that wasn't there before.
I hate not knowing.
I've always used the d-pad to move around, but I would much rather use the analog if I could have.

So if I always used the d-pad, then that must mean that I couldn't use analog before.

So, nope, couldn't use the analog stick before. :)

Zewone.
Man, that sucks.
I have a ton of demos, movies, pictures etc.
I messed around with the XMB for a couple hours last night with no problems.
Give your PS3 a nice long sleep, and a kiss. Hopefully it'll work itself out. Good luck.
There's too many unessecarily complicated settings, with little or no explaination. They need to streamline this shit.
I am gonna have to agree.

They added so much shit, its really complicated. They should have like a Help thing that explains every icon.

ALSO, anyone know wtf the point of the other Slideshow feature? It confuses me..
ALSO, anyone know wtf the point of the other Slideshow feature? It confuses me..
Just use it.

It's neat, similar to the table slideshow, except the picture are all squared up in a grid pattern.

You can stop it, and when you Zoom with the stick it breaks the grid and lines them all up one by one.

I will agree that every setting in the XMB should have a 'What is this?' option.
Holy crap. LOTR upscaled looks as good as any of the Blu Rays I own. Incredible.
mind listing all the settings you are using for the upscale?
Resolution set at 720p
Frame Noise Reduction @ 2
Block Noise Reduction @ 2
Upscale @ Full Screen
Super-White @ On
what kind of set do you have? It supports the super white?

I played devil may cry 3 earlier and I have to say I can tell the difference. I used the full and smoother both on.

I'm about to watch the matrix reloaded and get my settings all set to where it looks like buttah.

Here's a tip Myke.
It'll look even better if you use RGB HDMI range and set it to FULL.
Just make sure you brightness is at the correct level.
Use this pic to adjust, copy it to your PS3.
Make sure you see at least 9-10 of the 12 boxes.
HA! Now that is a first!
What'd I do?! Spell somethin wrong?

Eep!

And I mean shit as useless junk and lots of stuff. So I mean it both ways.

*added*

Can one of you come to my house and set up my PS3? Im so confused... lol ....

I did the noise reduction, block reduction, Super-White and I cant tell the difference. =/
And I switch it to Upscale and not during the movie and it looks exactly the same.
Anyone try using the media server yet? I'm trying to get it to work with Nero Home, but it always tells me no server found.
Try this one?
For those who can't get WM11 to work (me), check out this program called Orb.
All I did was install, and tell it where to look for files and went to my PS3 and it appears right away.
For the DVD upscaler...is it actually STRETCHING the picture and losing OAR?

For example, LOTR is 2.35:1....does upscaling actually FILL up the ENITRE screen???? If so, that is rather lame.

I was reading on the PS site.

Off Disable upscaled output.
Double Scale* Upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.
Normal Upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.
Full Screen Upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image.

* This option can be used only when the PS3™ system is set to output video at 1080p or 1080i via an HDMI or component AV cable.

Arg. I've always had trouble with dark images but no matter what setting I put my TV to, I can't get ANY of them to appear.

I've been having a hell of a time with this, but I finally got it working (mostly) properly.

-Open up Nero Scout, enable it, and set it to watch a folder with media in it. (start with a folder with a few songs, just to test it) Click on "Index Now" and make sure it's indexed a few files from the folder you selected.

-Go back to Nero Mediahome's shared directories tab and set it to "Share all content indexed by Nero Scout".

-Make sure you put a check mark by your NIC under the Network tab.

-Set everything to Auto-Detect in the Transcoding tab.

-Check your firewall and make sure it's allowing Mediahome.

-Click the Start the Server button and you should be ready to go.

The problem I had was that I told Nero Scout to index ALL of my music and nothing showed up on the PS3. Apparently, it won't show on the server until everything is indexed.
Arg. I've always had trouble with dark images but no matter what setting I put my TV to, I can't get ANY of them to appear.
I figured it out. I can see the boxes now. Seems some of my TV's settings only appear after you set them, then turn the power off then back on again. Looks good now though I have a little problem with images lingering on the screen so I'm sure I need to tone something down.

Quick question-- if you use a media server, will it play .avi files?
