System Watch:

Some GameRushes have PS3's on their incoming shipping reports as arriving on Tuesday, December 5th. One of the local stores that actually received Wii's will receive 1 (One) PS3 ($600 Version) tomorrow. No firm reports on when the next shipment of Wii's will arrive.

Random News:

In a really strange turn of events, GameRush actually pulled a lot of PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube games from Previously Played status and put them back up on the wall to rent. There are still plenty of used games for sale, but I thought this was an interesting move on Blockbuster's part.

Older News:

Random Tip
FIFA 2007 for the Xbox 360 is currently listed at $40 new ($60 everywhere else). If you pre-order it and pay for it in full now, you should be able to pick it up when it releases and save yourself $20.

oy!

Sounds like he screwed up the "fix". If you get a competant manager you can have them call corporate and have the entire history reviewed from when you paid in full (the original preorder deal) to whatever it is the later employee did. It looks like he gave you $5 presale credits and then delivered them to you with the remaining ($45 + tax) expected to be paid. Obviously a major screwup. You did get the games, correct?

It is possible as well that you actually have a CREDIT and not an amount due. I've had Blockbuster employees themselves get confused over that (one guy thought I owed $100 when that was my account balance from trading).

But from what I can tell it does seem you have a debit on the account - you need to go in, talk to the manager, and explain just as you did here. They will either simply credit you the full value, or go into more detail looking into it (calling corporate, whatever).

The original receipts are not of much use anyway, as they would still need to see if you ever cancelled or switched the preorders after the original purchase date. So don't worry about those.

lol, the GR in torrance has a couple ps3 60 gig in stock and they wouldn't let me use my $220 giftcard + I pay the differences w/ cash to buy it. That is five GR that wouldn't even let me use my giftcard to buy a ds lite/ps3/360 :(

I don't know what is up with the GR's in other areas. I bought my 360 and 3 DS Lites at GR with trade in credit. I would suggest politely talking to the store manager at the one you visit the most...

dang they won't let you use a giftcard? or a storecredit valuecard? that's lame of them

which stores are these?

did you try the GR on sepulveda in westchester? they said they had some in earlier today (though i don't know their credit policy..)
Exit (PSP) got $12.50 tonight. Slight drop.
Damn, was gonna try to get some more of those. Still, not bad though.

Here's some more:

Xbox - Gun Griffon Allied Strike: $12
PS2 - DragonBall Z Sagas: $2.50

First time I've ever traded a Gungriffon (which I know some people have used quite a bit in the past ;)). I was going to buy that and Arc The Lad End of Darkness at Gamecrazy with the Buy 1 Get 1 free coupon I have. Well, when the guy rang them up the Gungriffon, which was tagged $17.99, came up $7.99, so I just bought that. I'm curious as to what Arc EoD trades for at GR though as I can get that and something else at GC still.

Anyway, Gungriffon is $7.99 at GC and gets $12 ($17 for me) at GR. Not bad if you are using GC credit to buy it in the first place, though, like I said before, I don't want to transfer TOO much credit that way.

And the reason is... some minor possible bad news (for me and Botticus) anyway. I preordered Hotel Dusk and it is only $29.99 at GR. However, as of right now they have none on order. We'll see if my preorder changes that, but it is doubtful. I also preordered Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii. They did not have WarioWare in yet, as expected (late Thurs night - hopefully tomorrow it will come in). I completely spaced on what else you wanted checked Botticus or I would have done it - did you manage to find out yourself tonight? (Looking back at your post now - AH, Diddy Kong Racing, damn, I'd like to get an order for that in myself, so let me know!).
The receipts have the employee number on it so the powers that be can talk to him, but what happens when i walk in and show them these 2 receipts and they tell me "look it says right there you owe us money"
You say, "Are you in the habit of giving out brand new merchandise to customers and then asking them to pay for it later? Really? I didn't think so. Have a nice day."

Let them try to pursue it. It's not worth their time, and the preponderance of evidence is already on your side.

So the lack of Hotel Dusk being on order at my GR made me think about the DS and DS game sales at GR. They really don't get it, do they? They had a substantial used DS section (several provided by me ;)) before the 25% off sale. I was looking through them today - they are down to 1/4 or 1/5 of what they had a month ago. It is amazing as I've never noticed such a huge amount of used game sales at GR in such a short time. And yet they continue to give the DS short shrift and are already heading down the path of doing the same to the Wii despite the initial success that has had.

My store has also sold all of their used DS's (they had 3 or 4 several weeks ago). I had never noticed much in the way of used hardware sales there either, so this stood out.

(wiki updated)
The other one was FFVI, I'll check on those this weekend, if the snow stops sometime soon. I'm doubting that putting down a preorder now for Hotel Dusk would be at all useful, but I might do it anyway.
'm doubting that putting down a preorder now for Hotel Dusk would be at all useful, but I might do it anyway.
May I ask you gentlemen a question? I may? Thanks, here goes.

Wif all the problems y'all have with them losing records of your paying combined with the chance some of the preordered games won't show up at your GR, why do you continue to preorder?

::As it's often difficult to read a persons attitude online, I'll offer the disclaimer that I'm not being sarcastic, I'm genuinely curious what keeps you coming back for the same misery.::

Short answer: hundreds of dollars of cheap credit. Though I only have around $100 now, I got most of my preorders done in September (only one of those 6 that didn't come through was Contact, as expected).

If I really kept track, I could probably say that a dollar in GR credit only cost me about 35 or 40 cents. But for simplicity, I estimate that it's more like 50 cents on the dollar.

Just imagine what our misery would be if we hadn't taken advantage of summer specials to move the vast majority of this cheap credit over to EB at a significant profit (my EB credit is likely only around 25 cents on the dollar). ;)

I would have to say for each $3 in gamerush credit I spend a average of $1 in real money as well. Now with Rhino gone I will start heading back over there more often. I personally don't preorder anything since a few stores seem to get new games in around town. The Town Park and Shallowford Rd GA stores still get a decent amount of stock in. Town Park is normally a good bet since there are no other stores off Exit 8 575 that sell video games. If there is a game I am looking for I just swing by friday to see if what they got in.

I know Botticus is a glutton for punishment. I think when I got screwed over twice on preordered games not showing up at GR, and I had to spend full price to get them elsewhere while I had GR credit just sitting there, the games I flipped to get the credit ended up being money wasted.

But seriously, I think io and Botticus just enjoy this, in a sick sort of way ;) Plus they amassed a bajillion dollars worth of credit years ago. io goes 110% when he finds something like this

I just keep checking this thread hoping they'll have some more $20 and under games.

Sometimes if they don't preorder, their store will never even order the game.

That's my understanding from listening to Botticus bitch all the time
Sometimes if they don't preorder, their store will never even order the game.

That's my understanding from listening to Botticus bitch all the time
Pretty much, yeah. Particularly in the realm of portable games, they either get in one copy, or one copy over and above preorders. So I preorder to a) improve the odds of the store receiving a copy and b) improve my odds of getting said copy before anyone else goes and buys it up.

And to be fair, only a few games were ever "lost" preorders. FFXII, Zelda, couple others I didn't follow that were delayed so long that a year could pass after a preorder was placed. Otherwise you just start to get a good idea of what games to expect them to get. i.e. no Atlus, but almost all Nintendo, Squeenix and others show up.

But you don't lose your credit for pre-ordering, right? So if I'm understanding this correctly, worst case scenario is that you have to buy it somewhere else and apply your credit to something else?
But you don't lose your credit for pre-ordering, right? So if I'm understanding this correctly, worst case scenario is that you have to buy it somewhere else and apply your credit to something else?
Correct, although GR credit is usually a lot cheaper than REAL money. $60 game at GR may cost someone $25 of REAL money.

Not a big deal to me, I usually get mainstream games

Thanks. I should take advantage of trading in more games but I'm too lazy to look for games that would benefit most from it. But if you include using credit and buying their new games that have price drops (which I do a lot), it's a really great deal. I just bought a PSP so I'm using some of their new psp game prices to stock up on some games. Now if I only had credit to apply toward them, lol.

The problem I had a few years ago was that there nothing else in the store TO apply my credit to - so it was just wasted money. I ended up selling my credit at something like 80 cents to the dollar.

I didn't see "Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath" for the Xbox on the first page. GR is selling that one for $20. Here are a few that I have my eye on but right now I think I am only leaning towards Syphon Filter: DM and Lumines. Any thoughts on these games (stay away from, definitely get, etc.):

PS2:
Shadow Hearts: FTNW $20

Xbox:
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness $20
True Swing Golf $10
Oddworld Stranger's Wrath $20

DS:
Super Princess Peach $20

PSP:
Death Jr. $10
Lumines $13
Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror $20
Wipeout Pure $10

That sucks. Did you only have one GR in the area?
The problem I had a few years ago was that there nothing else in the store TO apply my credit to - so it was just wasted money. I ended up selling my credit at something like 80 cents to the dollar.
Yeah there was a time last spring where I didn't find any games I wanted for awhile. I just held on to the credit and used it to rent movies for awhile.
Thanks. I should take advantage of trading in more games but I'm too lazy to look for games that would benefit most from it...
Honestly, if you didn't take advantage of this a few years ago it's not worth it to start now. I got about $220 left in credit. After buying a 12 month subscription card and 3 X360 games I should be done with them.
Any thoughts on these games (stay away from, definitely get, etc.):

Definately get:
Lumines $13
Wipeout Pure $10

Death Jr is alright, and I think it's worth $10

I have Syphon Filter and I haven't played it yet, but for $20 I think it's a pretty good buy.

If you go to this thread, post #56 I compiled a list of the CAG recommended PSP games. http://cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97546&page=3&highlight=list
That sucks. Did you only have one GR in the area?
I had 5, but at the time I had every game I wanted and GR games kept getting "delayed" or just never showed up... I was getting sick of driving over there / calling (which was pointless, because the employees would just parrot "Friday Friday" even though games came in EVERY DAY).

I still made about $40 or so on the credit, though over what I paid to get it.
DS:
Super Princess Peach $20

Super Princess Peach is a great platformer that has been overlooked because it's relatively easy to beat and some consider it "girly". I had a lot of fun with it and it seems very much a Nintendo style platform game. It is easy to finish, but it is NOT easy to 100% the game as each world has newer, harder levels that open up after completing it.

Lumines is a classic, akin to Tetris. Buy it, do not hesitate. Play with headphones. (Lumines II sucks, BTW - Same exact game - Far Worse Music)
No, I understand BUYING the games there. But why preorder? After all the lost orders and screw ups? Just buy when the game comes in.
Been covered by others, but there are two reasons:

1) The vain hope that my preorder will change the status of there being none on order. I know that there have been times when they've only gotten ONE copy in, and I had it preordered. Usually when they order something for the store in general they get 3 copies. So I like to think the single-copy games are solely because of my preorder. Clubhouse Games was like this...

2) The more important reason is that, given the wide range of dates they actually get games in, I like to have it preordered so they save it for me instead of selling it to the first person who walks in. Now, there was at least one case where they sold my preorder to someone else, but I did get a $10 credit out of that (in addition to the refunded preorder of course). But they've been better about actually setting aside preorders for me the last several times.

3) Ok, I'm editing and adding a third reason for preordering - in the (however unlikely) case that anyone at corporate is paying attention, I want them to know that people are interested in certain games. I have preordered a lot of DS and Wii games, hoping they will ramp up their support for those systems (which is pathetic at this time). Also, I figure it helps GR in general to have these things preordered. As much as I complain about GR, they have been the best store for trade-in deals and I've gotten most of my new games there the last 2 years at much less than retail (after trade-in deals). I want them to do well, simple as that. I only have one store within 100's of miles of me - I want that store to stay as a GR, and I want the chain as a whole to stick around. It certainly won't be any better if it goes away and I'm stuck with just GC and EB.

And as Botticus said, the "lost" preorder thing was a fluke - just those that went over a year. Now that I know about it, that won't happen again. I know I'm pretty close to a year on another (Super Paper Mario). I will probably just cancel that since it isn't even being talked about any more by Nintendo.

And while we complain a lot about games not coming in, it really isn't a HUGE problem. They didn't get Contact or Disgaea 2 (which I preordered). They also never got Rayman or Elebits, though I didn't preorder those so I can't say for sure I wouldn't have gotten them if I had. Of course, right now I have a Classic Controller and Wii Points card preordered and they've never gotten those either . The bigger problem is the inconsistency of the arrival dates (e.g., Zelda, both Wii and GC, which both arrived weeks after release).

Of course, here it is, 2pm, and no call about Wario Ware Smooth Moves. I'll have to call them I guess. If they get that and Wii Play in a few weeks all will be forgiven.

I got the only copy of Phoenix Wright: JFA (DS) at my GR today.

$29.99. I'm loving it so far. I just finished Episode 1. :D

Did you guys not shop at GR years ago?

GR got in the first Phoenix Wright on release, not only that, but they got another shipment when the game was really really rare and hard to find.

I know my personal copy came from GR when the game was incredibly rare and fetching $80 on Ebay.
Did you guys not shop at GR years ago?

Yeah, I remember seeing it there before it was such a hot thing.

Lowered expectations, my friend ;)

Had I wanted this, though, I would have preordered at EB for the bonus stylus. However, if GR happens to have it in, I'll snag it with my existing credit, sure.

Edit - Just called my GR: they have 2 copies of WarioWare in. And they did NOT get Phoenix Wright. See, Roufuss, my lowered expectations were, indeed, met! Of course I have WarioWare preordered but the guy asked if I'd be in tonight to pick it up if he put it aside for me. WTF? I preordered it, they better hold it, as I might not make it in till tomorrow.

My GR called me today because I was in the other day and expressed interest in Wario, so the manager took the initiative and called to tell me it was in. I was stunned at the good customer service.
Definately get:
Lumines $13
Wipeout Pure $10

Death Jr is alright, and I think it's worth $10

I have Syphon Filter and I haven't played it yet, but for $20 I think it's a pretty good buy.

If you go to this thread, post #56 I compiled a list of the CAG recommended PSP games. http://cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97546&page=3&highlight=list
Thanks a lot! That list is very helpful. Ended up getting Wipeout Pure tonight, couldn't find any of the others on my list at the two GRs that I went to. Almost picked up Mega Man Maverick Hunter but decided to hold off for a better deal somewhere down the line.
Sometimes if they don't preorder, their store will never even order the game.
Oooooooohhh.
Been covered by others, but there are two reasons:

2) The more important reason is that, given the wide range of dates they actually get games in, I like to have it preordered so they save it for me instead of selling it to the first person who walks in.
Makes sense.

3) Ok, I'm editing and adding a third reason for preordering
I'm sorry, you said two reasons, so I'm cutting you off here.

- in the (however unlikely) case that anyone at corporate is paying attention, I want them to know that people are interested in certain games.
That's definately understandable. One would hope they'd have hired someone by now with their finger on the pulse of the gaming community. Sadly it appears that they buy into the promotion hoopla and buy 40 copies of whatever junk games inevitably sit on their shelves for ages. *sighs*

Publishers hire marketing people for a reason. Unfortunately it seems GR listens to too many of the wrong ones.

Picked up my WarioWare - they had another in the case for sale.

They do have Diddy Kong Racing available for preorder - $29.99. I preordered that. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will add a Hotel Dusk order at my store as a result of my preorder.

I checked on Wario: Master of Disguise (which comes out for the DS on March 5th). It is not in the system yet.

Is anyone else thinking of getting a GBA SP used from GR for $40 and taking it to EB for the $50 trade-in towards a DS? I'd do it if they DON'T have DS's and just let you keep the $50 credit, but that is probably YMMV (they will probably just refuse to do the promo). In any case, I'd do a $40 GR -> $50 EB transfer any day of the week ;).

Trade-in:

Sigma Star Saga (GBA) - $4.50

Worthless, but no more worthless than any other possible outlet. Put in a preorder for FFVI (29.99), decided to pass on preordering anything else. My willpower is strengthening!

I snagged a brand new copy of Lumines for $9 at GR and a brand new PSP battery for $5 a few months ago. The game actually rang up as $12 (had a sticker on it for $9). Didn't notice it until I had left, went back and got the adjustment. I asked if they had anymore of the batteries and they said no. Haven't seen much in the way of PSP accessories since so I guess they were doing a clearance to make room for next gen stuff (this was prior to the Wii and PS3 launch).

Trades:

PSP - Exit: $12.50
PS2 - One Piece Pirate's Carnival: $9.50
GC - Spongebob Bikini Bottom: $6

Yeah, I'd never heard of One Piece Pirate's Carnival either . Apparently it is some sort of party game. I got that, Exit, and Ant Bully for GC (which trades for $6 as well but I kept it for the kids) all for $5 each from the Best Buy checkout line (they were there with the candy for $9.99 each - $5 after the magic coupon).

Exit and One Piece aren't bad trades even without the $5 bonus (and of course with it they are great). Also, Feel The Magic for DS gets all of $1.

There are some other PSP games for $9.99 at Best Buy: Puzzle Challenge, Detroit Hustle (the pool game), and some more. I'm curious as to what they would get. I only bought ones I wouldn't mind getting stuck with ;). I think there were more PS2 games too but can't remember any.

Call of Duty 2-360 still gets $22. GS is only giving $7 for it. If you can find a copy at CC with the UPC 047875809390 it's on clearance for $16.96 but it has to be this UPC.

My GR got in the first Phoenix Wright, too, and a copy of it was sitting on an end-shelf for who knows how long. When I first saw it, I recognized that it was rare, but was like, "lol lawyer game lol" and passed on it.

How stupid of my past self. I'm loving the second one so far and the first one is my favorite DS game. My GR only got one copy of JFA in though.

so the 25% off used games is long over? that sucks. i have like $50 worth of GR credit and was hoping to take advantage of that sale

Yes, we were all surprised at how short that ran. I would assume some sort of used game deal will come back though - they at least seem to run those promos even if they've forgotten about the preorder deals ;).
