Preliminary word from gamestop has just come in this morning to the systems, letting them know about this promotion.

CREDIT GOES TO StormKing3 on the IGN boards. Here is a quote from him:

"I wish I could tell you more, but that is all that is known on my end at this time. If you want to call your local GS, tell them to check their "go store" or "go system" if they are not yet aware of it. I asked this clerk to check even though she insisted there was nothing. Appatently it was added this morning without prior notice. This is breaking news ATM. Even for the employees."

It seems that many of the stores are nto aware of this yet, and it will be a couple days until it is officially advertised.

I have called my local stores and ask them to check, and they have confirmed they have received the info.

This is great news for those looking for upgrades! Call your stores and see what you can find out people :D

I don't think it's 85, I was told 60 but then again, I can't even find confirmation for that anywhere. I think the person who said 85 was mistakenly adding the $25 bonus when you trade in a ps3, 360, etc. deal which doesn't include the ds models.

Anyone confirm the "void and rebuy" option for taking the XL home, doing the system transfer, then getting your money refunded? I'm out if it's a return in the form of store credit. I don't buy shit from GS generally. (at work for a while and curious is all, so I can't call myself)

Locally they said

NO SYSTEMS TRANSFERS

NO RETURNING IF You do a system transfer at home

blah blah blah... call back tomorrow to talk to the main chic who handles trade ins

blah

Got a phone call back from one store and they said

SYSTEMS TRANSFERS will be up to the person who buys it Gamestop will NOT DO IT ..so YMMV

so im passing since i have no way to transfer the data and refuse to go out and get a wireless router cause the last time (when i moved it from DSI XL to 3DS) it screwed up my entire network

I picked up a 3DS last year for $70 after a special promo that GS was running which offered a $100 trade-in for any regular DS, so getting $100 back for my 3DS is actually not bad at all. Unfortunately I wanted to give my wife my old 3DS and get a XL and not knowing whether or not I can do a system transfer makes me hesitant to trade my old 3DS. I'll keep holding out for a decent trade-in promo involving games, save up my credit and just buy the 3DS XL that way instead.

I am the same way. I dont really buy from gamestop either. The system transfer options seems to be super YMMV right now at all the different stores. Very weird, and hopefully they get a company policy going about it

I have been calling almost every GameStop in my area, and none of them know shit about this promo. How in the fuck is it that we know more than the employees?!

Because most dont give a shit lol.

Sucks that its so damn YMMV though, you'd think they would have some company wide policy by now regarding this.

I swear, it boggles my mind that they make as much money as they do, having people who barely run the shit working there.
This is off-topic, but does anyone know of any upcoming Buy 2 Get 1 free used games deal at GameStop?
You're right that is off-topic.

Actually,

I told the manager at the store I frequent (and by frequent, I mean spend entirely too much money in weekly): "I'm trying to give you my money, if you won't let me do it, why should I give you my money?"

He was awesome about it, called his DM, his DM said it was all good. So I will be buying for full price, doing my exchange, and then returning it for the $100 turn in. I'm keeping my ambassador.

Consequently, there is a Panera near me and he also said I could walk over there and do the system transfer.

Have we confirmed the need for wi-fi? Seems wierd as the DS's can system link together without it.
Any confirmation on the trade-in value of the DSiXL this sunday? Still can't seem to find a concrete answer.
I would like to know this as well, $75 or more and I'll be getting a 3ds xl on Sunday.

haha anyone know if they are giving $25 for the phat DS :O

picked one up at a yard sale for $3 a couple weeks back and if gamestop offered anything more then $20 i'd trade it :p

I called yesterday before my preorder and the guy at GS told me they will be doing the buy and return for $100. Basically it looks like they will be taking the trade in as cash option instead of credit to give you the money back. I asked the guy twice he said it will go back on my card/cash however you paid for the system. I just figured they would have some sort of a wifi hotspot by now. I remember them doing stuff with pokemon back int he day and some tournaments for nintendo had wifi areas to play. I guess we will see on sunday. Just and FYI my store only got 8 or so of each color so you might have to pre order.

This is why I am really hoping everything goes the way I plan at best Buy. I know they will match the trade in deal, but I hope I can system transfer...

I have it preordered at best buy and worried i wont be able to get it at gamestop

I really want to take advantage of this trade in/upgrade deal ,but My GS employees blow, and even though i spend tons at BB, they would never match price for trade.
hey random question but does anyone know if gamestop warranty plan exchangeS your broken system for a new one or do they make you get a used one?
If you bought the system new with PRP (warranty), it'll be exchanged with the same exact new system. Same goes for pre-owned. If you bought a pre-owned, they'll exchange it with another pre-owned.

The warranty doesn't cover dropped systems, just anything internal (Buttons stop working, doesnt read games, screen goes out, etc.)

So let's say I backup my data from my 3DS' SD card onto my computer the day before. I do the system transfer. Couldn't I just skip the putting the old SD card into my XL part and copy/paste the backup data from my comp to the XL's SD card?

In theory yes it shouldnt matter when you do the transfer process of the SD card because it is completely separate from the system transfer.

Alright. Data backed up. Incidentally, I noticed "Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition" is among the pre-installed apps when the SD card is removed. That one does transfer along with everything else, right? Cause it's no longer available to download on the eShop.

question i wonder why this guy is telling people this

http://www.wired.com/reviews/2012/08/nintendo-3dsxl/

If you are upgrading from an original 3DS, make sure to use the “System Transfer” software immediately to move all of your downloaded games and other data to the new system. The process can be done without an internet connection and requires a lot of waiting, but it’s the only way to get everything moved over since Nintendo has no online account system that allows for cloud saves or changing content authorizations.

wonder how many people will see that and think they dont need an internet connection to change data that is a pure lie that you dont need internet to do this unless he knows something nintendo dont

EDIT GOt a phone call back from a manager and was told

NO LOCAL GAMESTOPS Can do a data transfer

all they can guess is you buy system for 200.. take system home do it yourself bring system back and hope the system will allow it to be return and your 100 bucks credit ..

i came very very close to doing this but look at the prices and stuff

I just got a used 3ds back in JUNE (person got it in feb) Its still under warranty till MAY 2013 top screen is scratched and nintendo said they would fix the screen for free If nintendo does any work they toss a year warranty on it meaning I would have it under warranty from MAY 2013 or MAY 2014

yes gamestop is giving 100 but look at the older systems on EBAY DS LITES STILL Grab 40 to 50 bucks.... so its mostly a 50 buck risk of not selling the unit now

+ im 99.9% sure MEIJERS is going to have 20 bucks off anything in store Labor day knocking the system down to 180 or even less if you use the meijer credit card (15%more) another 30 knocking the system down to 150... meaning i would only need 50 out of the old 3ds system)

long story SHORT without them doing a SYSTEM TRANSFER I will just wait
anyone know the trade in value of DSI XL...Thanks..
I'm still wondering this myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know that a lot of people don't care too much about the color of their handhelds, but I'm very picky about it. After finding out that they released the Purple 3DS I was kind of annoyed because I already had picked up a Red right before the purple released. I think in this case i'm going to wait until they release more colors for the 3DSXL. How about Yellow or Green Nintendo? come on.

that is one ugly looking system

doubt it ever sees the light of day here. did we ever get any LE of the DSI besides zelda and pokemon

if it was to hit before thanksgiving be my guess but since its not even out in japan till the 25th i doubt it would make it here in time for the hoildays

It just sucks that noplace around here has system transfer .. said starbucks but i doubt they are going to let me sit there for 2 hours not buying anything sucking up their wi fi
Thanks for the link. That looks pretty ugly, just a plain yellow 3DSXL would be fine :)
lol I certainly wouldn't buy it. I wouldn't mind seeing a Samus themed 3ds though. Nintendo just doesn't give Metroid enough love.

My question got buried, so I'll try asking it again: If I've never downloaded anything from the eShop, would I need to do a system transfer for my save data, profile info, and whatnot, or is that stuff on my SD card?

If you can't do the trade-in I think the best situation would be to buy the XL if you must have it now then hold onto your original 3DS until the holiday season, then sell it on ebay or craigslist, whatever your preference. If you dump your 3DS on ebay right away it will not get much value since everyone will be doing the same. The 3DS is still current and a used model should bring enough to at least cover the $100 trade in plus ebay fees as systems always fetch more during the holidays especially since this system will likely be in high demand over the holidays.
Update: Some stores are saying that system transfer will be available with a buy full price, and return for a 100 dollar adjustment option.

Other stores do not know how this is going to work because the info is so fresh. Hopefully we can get a straight answer soon.
If that's the case, I will definitely do this, but then I'd have to sell my Circle Pad Pro & hope they make another soon. I want my Ambassador status/games, so that's what made me decide against the XL. If I could keep that, I'd be game. I wish there were more than blue & red, though (and ones available are not even a nice blue or red).

Thanks a lot, OP!!

I'd be all over this if I didn't have my Zelda 3DS. I'm sure when the time does come, that I'll get more on ebay or CL or anywhere else than GS though.

I would think you would do a System transfer, but could just use the systems' wifi to connect to each other, and not need to be connected to the Eshop, or online, but I'm not sure. I'd like some clarification on this, too.

I have never transferred content on a portable. What do I need to do to make sure I get my Ambassador stuff (and everything, really)? Anyone have the time to tell me, or link me to a reputable site with instructions? It'd be much appreciated.

4swords anniversary edition is a DSiWare title not 3DS download, or VC

ALL DSiware is saved internally. it will be transferred when you do a 3DS to 3DS transfer.

I have ~$300 in GS credit, so I could conceivably buy the (most likely red) XL for full price (at a GS where I wouldn't pay tax on that $200 ;)), do the system transfer myself at home, and sell my black 3DS later in the year for $125-$150 on Amazon when the demand is greater.

What do you guys think?
I don't feel that $100 is worth it.

I totally dig the XL, but I'm not dropping $100 for it when I already have a 3DS.
Ebay or Craigslist.

I went and made my preorder today, local gamestop said that the 3ds would have to be traded in before I can get the 3ds XL. Asked if I could completely pay off my XL and then just do a return/rebuy since I'm pretty sure they allow hardware returns, he said he'd have to check but probably not. If I can't do it I'll just sell it for $107 or something on Amazon or eBay later on in the year.

Why would demand for a system that everyone is selling go up?
Why would demand for a system that everyone is selling go up?
During the holiday season, you might be surprised what people will quickly snatch up to give as a Christmas present, even older versions of portable systems.

At least, that's my hope.
Why would demand for a system that everyone is selling go up?
Stores routinely run out of used handheld systems at Christmas time. Parents will swoop up those old 3DS systems for the $20-$70 off they will be from a new one, especially on the weekends when there's free 1-year warranties.

Or like the other person said sell them on Amazon. Used GH/RB guitars sell on there for a minimum of $40 each for crying out loud.

Went to the store I used to work at part time during Summer Breaks while teaching/ known the manager for close to 7 years now. He said that managers have been given permission to allow returns/ resales for system transfers at their discretion. So, if a manager wants to allow this to increase sales, they can. If they don't want to, corporate isn't going to make them. Thankfully, he let me, but said none of his other pre-orders have even asked about trading the regular 3DS in. I think Gamestop waited too late in the game for the promotion. Still, it can't hurt to ask the store where you shop, just be sure to ask the manager. I say this because his assistant manager said that I couldn't return and rebuy the system for the transfer just the other day. Glad I went in and talk to the manager.
