This whole controversy reminds me of something in the mid 90s that happened at FunCoLand (One of Gamestop's precursors)

There was a worker who whenever someone would go in to buy a new copy, would gut the new copy and sell the customer just the game. When a customer asked what was going on, he'd say the boxes were just for display only.

He'd then take the cash, and pocket it. The boxes on the shelf would show the game was still in inventory, and a quick precursory glance made you think they were all in stock. He walked away with thousands or more before he was finally caught.

Coincidentally, second 2A of the FTC says that lying about stock is illegal
https://www.ftc.gov/about-ftc/what-we-do/enforcement-authority

A similar case happened in 2009 at Office Depot where they would lie about stock to push other products, much like how Gamestop is pushing used and other items. The FTC ruled the practice was illegal "It's illegal to make false claims about a product, such as 'It's out of stock' when it's not or that a clearance product has a certain markup."
idiots are not exsclusive to Gamestop. I worked at BBY years ago and they would say the high end tvs were out of stock if the customer did not want to buy the product protection plan.
I like BBY a lot bettter now than when I worked there.

Really? Wow that's next level shady right there. Thankfully I research the hell out of everything before I buy. Stock levels included.

I worked at Best Buy in the early 2000s.

I remember the employee handbook at the time where it literally said to nod when a customer talks to, making the customer think you're in agreement with them, and would therefore further trust you.

My direct manager/higher up in the computer sales department taught me so many underhanded sales tactics. The worst of which was to just slip the Product Service Plan (PSP) documentation/pamphlet into their hand while shopping so that it'll automatically get scanned and added to the price at check out, increasing their sales numbers. (At the time, PSP sales determined how profitable of an employee we were)

Another store I worked at years earlier, a small game trade and sales store like Funco/Gamestop, well they were shady as hell. They'd offer "Repairs" and by repairs, I mean they'd take the system.. then go across the street/town buy a NEW console of the same brand (Saturn or Playstation, this was 96') of consoles, flip the new from the broken one and return it for full refund.....

I love that the author said he is going to keep digging and exposing how bad corporate GameStop is. Even Forbes and Yahoo posted their own articles about this same subject

With this situation, Kotaku is resembling actual journalism. Never thought I'd see the day!

Employee #4 my bet.
I'd bet on this one, myself:

As a current assistant manager at a GameStop store in NY I can promptly tell you that almost everything that was brought up in the initial article was absolute bullshit being complained about by shitty employees who were also probably just shitty people in general. Those kind of employees make up a very small minority of GS associates and honestly give the rest of us a bad name. No one ever gets threatened to be fired for that kind of stuff unless they have been lacking for months on end. And it’s never even a majority of the staff that gets threatened. It’s always the store managers first because they set the tone of the store and frankly if they can’t get their employees to do their jobs then they are either terrible managers and shouldn’t be running a store in the first place or should fire the staff and get people who will actually put the effort in and do the work.

I love working here. Are there times when they tell us we absolutely have to do certain things or meet certain numbers? Of course. It’s a business. For some reason people just like picking on GameStop as a business because they have had bad experiences with bad employees. But it happens, thats normal in any business. COL is not something new. It’s been around forever. It’s what makes GameStop run as a company. Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc. they all have the same shit. If you don’t help grow the business or you are losing the company money you’re gonna get fired. That’s how the world works. Does it sometimes suck? Sure, but you can’t complain about a business doing what it has to do to make money.
Methinks someone's sucking a little too much on the company penis.

He enjoys his job, I see nothing wrong with that. Its a fact though that many people spew bull to help Gamestop go under. If or/and when Gamestop goes under then what flips are left?

I would go to bat for my job just as hard.

That seems a little too propoganda-ey for me, though. Further up on that article, there's more than a number of people spelling the doom and gloom. Guess the one I highlighted was a bit more indoctrinated.

Though I see what you did there.... just as hard. ;)

Going to bat for your job is one thing, but voluntarily emailing an author to try and damage control your company's crappy policies is another thing

That was no regular employee. My guess is a higher up saw the piece and sent that crap in. If it was a couple of people saying this no one would care and the story would die.

If any of you haven't seen the GameStop reddit you really need to. Lots and lots of employee's saying the same or near same stuff.

I will never shop at GameStop again. To be honest I don't really shop there now. But this just sealed it.

Don't do your usual game shopping @ GS. What we really need to do is stick it to them, take advantage of every and all loop holes and arbitrage opportunities. You'll also help the employee boost his/her number while impacting GS bottom line #.

Despite the allegations unless this dips they ain't doing shit.

You know what though Blackbeard, as shitty as their practices are, the story was really about how hard a company is pushing to increase its profit margin. I can understand that not resulting in a dip in stock shares.

Long run though this could lead to slumping overall sales (Which leads to possibly more promos :D/ )

All my close friends who worked at Gamestop quit last year due to policy changes and a new district manager. This includes a woman who had been a store manager there for well over 10yrs.

I wonder if these life thing was part of it, or is it only very recent.

I was working at Target as the electronic specialist when they first rolled out extended warranties. I would tell my crew to always ask but never press. If someone was waffling on buying a big TV (42" at the time) I would just tell them I'd throw in the $20-30 warranty for free and 99% this worked. When I rang it up, I'd just add a $20-30 discount to the TV and then ring up the warrant full price. TV sales were up, warranties were up, and guests left happy.

Yeah but that's not actually good. Not from a company pov anyways.

Lmao, I worked at an office store where a manager did that for almost 2 years until he got caught and fired instantly.

What gets me with all this COL issue is if doing trades is such an important thing why are there so many jr detectives out to get you?
Because although they are not qualified OR REQUIRED to do so, if they know about "shady" practices and do not report them the associate will be held responsible.

Silly I know

maybe next time we should kindly remind jr detective of his "COL" expectation when jr detective start asking questions/researching their pos terminal, etc. let jr detective know if jr detective doesn't want his trade-in number boost, gonna take it down the street to the next GS and give someone else the use game trade-in credit boost.

Where the fuck is the 50% trade in bonus? Been quite a while since the last one (let's not pretend that one during the beginning of January was one, since you had to renew your PUR sub).

The real question is, Now that we have a better idea of how their metrics work, how can we use it to gain favor from the GameStop employees to benefit us?

In all business, there is give and take on both sides. I don't mind doing something to help out the people who help me. Whether that means preordering and then, instead of cancelling and walking away, rolling that cancellation into a new preorder.

Or using a B2G1 coupon and trading 2 in right away while keeping 1. This seems like it fits perfectly into their COL and they should encourage me to do so.

There are ways to spin this system in our favor, we just have to be the puppet masters.

Lol. I am gonna start taking bribes. Get a little bidding war going.

Seriously though, I might just causally mention that article from now on if they start getting weird. I've had pretty good luck with no jr detectives recently.

My local store, some of the employees just tell me how shitty it is for them. Every employee's hours were cut this month. Regardless of how long they had been working there.

One weird thing I found out once is if they turn off those tvs that play those annoying ads, they'll get a call from corporate 20 minutes later asking why the TVs not on. Creepy.

I bet we won't see one until after the Switch launches at this rate, they are probably up to their ears in traded in consoles right now and those are cash cows for them.

Was I the only one thinking this as I read this last line

I am sure they are watching that as they are paid for the ads they show.

But consoles don't get 50% boost. I am guessing boosts have to do with game inventory.

Has anyone tried trading the original X1 controllers since they disappeared from the trade in list? I am curious as to what the employees say.

With the employees who get how the system works I just reserve games, don't do returns, give them gpgs, and help their numbers as much as possible. For the most part they don't care if I cancel the return after the game is released. This has worked wonders on my end and the stores rarely harass me when I go in with the flips. And on the flip side there are some dumb oblivious employees along the chain of command and I just either avoid those employees or in some cases avoid those particular stores. Any employee at any level can get you banned by simply being a complete jackass over what might be considered nothing if they bring it to the right person's attention. So just take that as food for thought when a person/customer goes in being bossy or making authoritative demands or blatantly cheating the system. No one wants to feel like a moron behind the register.
