Naw, I won the first match of the tournament, which is why I had to go up against him.

The guy running the bracket was like, that's what you get for winning first!

Man, nobody in that tournament got any practice before it started because the morning brackets from BB and KOF were running late and the people playing SFIV casuals wouldn't get off so we could practice. It definately ended up hurting me in the matches, because I missed like 8 AHVB's with cable, on top of a bunch of dashes and punishes with mag. You tell Row wasn't the best either since he messed up some stuff with mag and sent too.

I did alot better than I expected though, and played much better than I did at EVO.

I love it when KOF noobs complain about how someone fights. Look at this gem of a message from someone who used a lame Kyo, Joe, and Robert. I used Chin, Daimon and Terry.

You play KoF online? Impressive, did the new patch come out yet? I don't mean the first one that was 700MB, I'm talking about the supposed second one.

I play it online? I play the damn thing almost every day for hours at a time! The online works fine if you do the distance based method. I play people from California only and I can have a room of 4-5 people with minimal to no lag if their settings are done properly. It's mainly with friends, but the game still kicks ass. Every once in a while, you get a noob who joins and ruins the game. I just leave the room and make another and reinvite everyone and make it so the room is invite only.

I need this....totally forgot it came out this week.

I'd order it now, but I found out this morning that some jerk got my credit card number and tried using it on the Apple Online Store. Lots of calls to my bank, Apple Online Security, canceled cards, Fraud Claims, and swearing later, I'm sort of crippled until my new card shows up or I get a temporary one before my trip to Seattle next Thursday.

Ah, somebody else who uses Chin. While he's not my best character he's definetly my favorite to use. He's just fun. And it's funny that you mention Kyo, Joe & Robert, that seems to be the universal noob team. But the lag on 360 is still pretty bad. I always setup a 2 people maximum room to avoid this.

Robert is scrubby when most people use him, the Mexicans that I play with combo like hell with Robert. This was just a white guy spamming the Flame kicks. I wish it didn't go back so much after use so I could punish it far more easily.

And I like Chin and his new combo system, but I wish that he still used his jug as an attack as that gave him a more mid screen attack to poke and annoy with. I wish he still had his flame DM too. But otherwise, I enjoy the new Chin very much. Kinda wish he still had that move from 98 where he lied on the ground and just moved around annoying everyone.

What are ya trying to say? Only Mexicans can use Robert effectively? Discrimination :bomb: I tend to stay way from any kind of shoto-type character. But I do like Andy.

But yeah Chin plays completly diffrent than before. I surprise alot of players with him. I normally stick him in the front since people tend to underestimate him. Goro is no joke. Unlike most characters he seems reletivly unchanged. I love picking people out of the air with his air grab.

In all honesty, I don't like Goro's changes. His grabs no longer have that instant grab where they grabbed you almost instantly. Also in the past when you knocked someone down, you could grab them from the ground and toss them again . They nixed that and that's in poor judgement. Grapplers are pretty neutered in this game.

And yes Chin surprises. People who use Chin either do it as a joke, or do it to scare the living shit out of people. Those are my two reactions to Chin. They're either joking, or incredibly good with the man.

Everyone in KOF XII seemed to get nerfed in some degree so if Goro kept all those little perks I think he'd be too cheap. He's still got the cheap ground slam. His air grab has more of a delay but because of that I've learned to read people better.

Everyone got nerfed? Robert hasn't been this good in years. Ryo's rushing game is more brutal then ever, Kensou got one hell of a huge buff and Chin is more random then ever when played properly. Ralf is far more quicker and incredibly damaging. The only characters that got huge nerfs were Clark. Goro got some nerfing but is still good. His earlier iterations were better. Kyo's iteration and Joe's iterations are in fine form this game.

There's no denying a lot of the characters seem underdeveloped when compared to previous iterations of themselves. Robert is missing his comand moves which gave him some crazy combos. And it's pretty weak that most all characters (except 6) have only 1 DM.

Sounds like every KOF where they change people and new top tiers emerge

I miss my KOF2002 Athena and her HF Ryu Fireball

I dunno. After playing KOF XII a good amount, I'd say that it's better then 02. 02 feels stiff in comparison or just that the button inputs have to be 100% precise otherwise they don't come out. Plus it just feels like it moves slower and the jumps aren't as useful after seeing the radius of how jumps are in XII.

I liked 02' for the sheer amount of moves & characters. Plus all the crazy SDMs that were added. Still 98' will always be my fav. Also really liked 99' mainly cause it had an awesome soundtrack.

Gameplay-wise I have no complaints with XII. The core fighting system is well done. The series needs some work but at least they got the most important part right.
but 98 trumps all...

i still want 98UM but I'm hoping to snag it for $10 at some point for PS2.
Update the first page! It has mains on there that I picked before SFIV even came out.

Anyone got any tips for learning grappler characters?

So far I'm picking up Abel, but I'd eventually like to learn Zangief.

Also thinking of making a SFIV match making thread where you could find other CAGs to play against, based on character, timezone, level, etc. What do you guys think?

If people want to get updated, post ur info in the same format as the OP so I can copy and paste.

Also, to prep ahead of time, post the same type of info for Tekken 6 for those who plan on getting it. And yes, include if you'll be getting the PSP version.

Zangief is easier to pick up then Abel is, or at least that's been my experience. Gief's 360s are easy to do in SFIV, so don't worry about doing it too slowly.

The only advice I can give for grapplers (Abel is one of my mains) is learn the character inside and out. Gief and Abel play completely different and have their own Strengths/Weaknesses.

Abel's cross-up is great as well as his Mix-Ups, granted you can vary them a little. He builds up meter pretty fast with Marseilles Roll, but in certain Match-Ups, he'll need to burn it pretty quickly. There are also characters that shut down Abel's cross-up completely. Vary your Mix-Ups, score a knockdown and Abel can run like an avalanche.

Having the Marseilles Roll gives Abel good mobility (EX can get you out of tight spots), but if you use it too frequently you'll have players baiting it and counter with a throw/Mix-Up. EX Rekka has EX Armor so used wisely can help out.

I can go on and on about Abel's Strengths/Weaknesses, but again the grapplers play differently so I would learn basic pokes, normals and then move up from there to Combos, FADC Mix-Ups, etc etc...

I guess my best advice is learning the distance and times of when you can command throw.
Oh, so that's why you roll so much...to build up meter! Also to confuse me lol.
Building meter/mobility is huge with the Marseilles Roll. Also on knockdown, you can use it to confuse your opponent on wake-up (if your mixup game is down) on which way to block and what to block specifically.
I can't remember the last time AxC used Abel's roll against me, since I kept punishing it. :)
Those are fightin' words!

here's how I learned Abel:

-mixup = j.mk
-learn basic combos with c.hp (c.hp -> ultra; c.hp xx lk roll -> fp sky)
-learn to use command throw (set up with f+mk, on wakeup, or to punish)
-block strings (really easy, actually)
-learn how to use f+mk (best post i've seen on abel subforum on srk)
-FADC the CoD into c.hp -> ultra or whatever c.hp combo
-c.hp mindgames

once you keep practicing, you'll get a sense of how Abel plays. personally, the way I like to learn is by watching matchup videos.

Thanks guys I actually got the resets down pat, for Abel. Now I think I just need char specific strats. ATM, I'm just stumped when it comes to playing Sagat. He can zone like a mofo with his fbs and one hit tks. I honestly can't get in other than the occasional roll shenanigans. If someone could share some input either playing Sagat or as Sagat, that would be much appreciated. Also against Gief would be nice.

I also got to work on my meter management. I've noticed there were tons of times I could've used to build meter, and tons of times I burn it in one go when normal specials would have sufficed.

Also tried Zangief and liked him at first, but once I started playing Akumas and decent Ryu's, it was just an uphill battle. Jump back FTL. I think I'll try to take on Chun-li as she is more rushdown oriented it seems. Abel's pressure game is what I seem to take an affinity to, so it seems I would like Chun-li. Well, time to start mashing cr.lk as that's what all the Chuns seem to do....
