I prefer X over VII even though they are similar solely because of the battle system. That and the graphics are much better.
FFX was very good. I absolutely loved it, but I still give the edge to FFVII because I prefer the Materia over sphere grid, mini-games were more fun, slightly prefer characters, prefer soundtrack overall, and enjoyed the story a little more. Graphics don't have a single impact as to what FF I like the most.
My ranking goes (this is for the main FF games):
1. Final Fantasy VII (Just the best overall. Only tiny issues I may have, a remake would fix (like using an analog stick would be nice, but there was no analog stick at the time it came out)) - 63+ hours
2. Final Fantasy IX (Slower battle system hurt it a little, but I love its characters too much) - 42+ hours
3. Final Fantasy X (I prefer ATB and hated its mini-games, but still one of my favorites of last gen for sure. Last truly great FF game IMO). - 60+ hours
4. Final Fantasy IV (First FF game I played and beat. Just a bit short) - 23 hours (but beat it many times)
5. Final Fantasy VI (The game is very well done and top notch, but the characters didn't grab me as much as others) - 40 hours
6. Final Fantasy V (My least favorite of the SNES ones, but I still love it) - 38 hours
7. Final Fantasy VIII (If it weren't for a few gameplay issues I have, it would be towards the top). - 37 hours
8. Final Fantasy XII (Not a fan of its direction personally)
9. Final Fantasy III (Too little story although I played it on DS)
10. Final Fantasy II (While some hate its skill system, I still found it a bit better than the first)
11. Final Fantasy I (too little story and is a chore for me to play) - Have no idea, sold my original copy
As for some spin-off games, I'd put FFX-2 above FFXII, and I'd put Crisis Core either above or below FFV. I'll be honest I beat 8 out of 11 on the list (XII, III, and II did not get beat. I beat I since I had it many years ago, and just can't play it now, even the updates).
Still keep in mind that FFVII was NOT the first RPG I played. FFIV was the first one I played. I played a bunch of SNES RPGs like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire, etc. before it. It wasn't even my first PS1 RPG, since I played Suikoden, Vandal Hearts, and Beyond The Beyond before it.
