Classic mistake.
This is Planescape, Pete. There's no such thing as low-level rats. Those guys are powerful, vicious mother

ers. Seeing as how you pumped non-combat skills - hopefully with an emphasis on wisdom, 'cause wisdom is badass in that game - you should try talking to the rats instead. Negotiate with them. Trust me, it'll get you a lot further.
EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, most of the rat-related stuff is entirely optional. My first run-through, I totally ignored the Many As One. Killed the rat spies, though.
Also, remember that death is usually not a bad thing. And that Morte is the only thing remotely resembling a tank until you get a few points into your constitution; Dak'kon can't take shit for damage.
EDIT2: And don't worry about missing out on combat EXP because you're avoiding fights. Unless you're going after Glaabrezu in the sewers, the
vast majority of your EXP will come from outside of combat, where high intelligence/charisma/wisdom will really help.
EDIT3: And if you
really want to kill the rats/are forced to fight because you pissed them off, remember that they're
way easier if you can catch them alone or in very small groups. Failing that, if you can kill enough of a large group, you should scare most of the rest off.
I gave this game up 8 years ago, you're lucky I even remember who Morte is. I do remember that my party was me, Morte and one other character, and browsing through FAQs showed me that there were a couple more characters that I felt ripped off for not having. I wonder if, through some miracle, my save file is still on my old laptop. I'll have to look.
