I'm buying her, too.
I don't have any issues with the price -- I'm just jaded that for some unknown reason that ed boon can't be bothered to divulge, 360 owners get the discount bundle. I'll wait until I want Rain or get the discount bundle if it ever comes.
I think I have a shield, but haven't really used it. Part of the issue might be that I'm using a weapon that has a pretty short reach (was just looking at stats when equipping it).
Depending on the shield, you may be able to block the Medusa heads and not get stoned -- however, I don't remember exactly... you could try it if you're desperate.
More importantly, use a weapon that has a attack hit box/animation you jive with -- if there are two you like and you don't have a good shield or like using it, stick one on each hand and just remember which attack button to use.
The stats aren't as important as the animation, because if you do +3 damage to an enemy, but you have trouble hitting them, it isn't worth it. Choose the weapons you're comfortable with.
Also, do what jimbo says -- most of the magic in the game is usable without finding relics. Especially soul steal. Abuse the

out of it. It'll damage all enemies on screen and suck life out of them to give to you. If you're surrounded and there's too many medusa heads, you can drop that and it might kill them.
One last thing is if you find an enemy you think might give you decent XP (or you have the relic... if there is one... that shows XP gain from enemies), don't be afraid to grind a little by changing screens and coming back. A few extra hitpoints, a few extra magic points, and a few extra in your stats might make the difference between another use of soul steal (and surviving long enough to get it off) and having that use actually damage stuff enough on screen to kill some of it.
