Tons of fighting games, a few licensed Konami beat-em-ups, and not much else. That, and you don't see arcades much anymore.
Good point. They can't just keep making great games in one genre and doing second-rate work (if any work) for the rest.
Square Enix looked as if it was in a similar situation with JRPGs, but they're in much better shape these days. The merger with Eidos has certainly helped in their case, not to mention Dragon Quest being such a cash cow in Japan, their manga publishing arm, and the steady expansion of their merchandising division.
Yeah, that was exactly my point. Remember, they almost went under and had

ing ACCLAIM publishing some of their shit because they were so poor. Resident Evil pulled them out from the abyss.
Would it happen again? Possibly.
Square Enix definitely got a boost from Eidos. At first I was like "WTF are you doing?" but now they have Deus EX and the now surprisingly great Batman franchises, plus the new Tomb Raider looks solid.
I'd argue that Capcom's not even making good games in one genre. MVC3 was fun, but not on the level of their fighters back in the day (tm.) SF4 is just bad.
That was my point with the outsourcing. Eighting made MvC3 and Dimps made SF4. Capcom doesn't even make shit directly anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if RE6 will be outsourced too.
