Let me explain to everyone how PS3 updates work. For one, there's only a console firmware update every 2-3 months as of late, compared to every month early in the month. The reason for the constant updates is so Sony can continue to reduce the amount of OS memory everything uses (especially in game). This allows for features to be added in-game (like the in-game XMB, could not be added until the size of the OS memory decreased to a certain amount), and allows Sony to give more available RAM to developers (making ports especially easier to do on PS3). While PS3 firmware updates only take me 2 minutes to download, what takes them a bit longer (compared to other updates) is the larger file size. Main firmware updates are over 100MB in size, and due to the way PS3 was created, the main firmware has to be re-downloaded every time to add/remove features. It cannot be patched in via small file size.

Game updates use to have a certain amount of space to add space. For a game like Resistance/MotorStorm, every time a feature was going to be added, the same exact file had to be re-downloaded every time something was added/changed. Older PSN games were like that where you could not patch, but only re-download the same game over and over again. As development kits were updates, games could be patched through via small/large file. There are also no restrictions on game update size, and they are not heavily compressed (which leads to a higher size). Some games like LBP, Burnout Paradise, etc. have large updates because they are built on a foundation where if anything is added in the store, a new file has to be downloaded. Once the file is downloaded to add stuff, you can buy unlock keys in the store to use it. I believe its a way some third parties use to avoid paying for bandwidth fees (or whatever) on the PS Store, using their own servers for the update.

I rarely have a problem with updates because I like things being fixed and new features, but then again I don't have that problem because I tend to play certain games a lot. If you don't play a game for a very long time, you might have to download a bunch of updates, unless its one of those games that combines the updates into one (like SingStar I believe).
I hear Sony is stuck in last this gen and has less Japanese games than the 360, any truth to this?

Taking away advertised features is still bullshit.

fuck Sorny.

Well GGT, I'm no longer an Xbox 360 owner. I took my replacement 360 to GameStop and got $188+ for everything. My 360 alone (with no HDMI, warranty which expired soon) got me $149 alone. I would have preferred to wait, but the bonus made it too hard for me to wait.

I'll probably buy some Xbox 360 Elite sometime after E3, but waiting to see if there's a new model/SKU first.

Good news is it will be easier to work on my PS3 and Wii backlog.

I still own 7 of my 360 games, like MW2, ToV, Lost Odyssey, Raiden Fighters Aces, Raiden IV, DDR Universe, and Blue Dragon.
Taking away advertised features is still bullshit.

fuck Sorny.
Who cares, Linux was so gimped on PS3 and only huge nerds would even touch that feature. PS3 Slim is what sells, so I doubt Linux made any difference.

Regardless, looking to buy After Burner on PSN today. Bought Ogre Battle 64 on VC yesterday. Really cool game, and remember how much I liked it (I only rented).

Brilliant! Tell us more of your awesome insights about consumer rights and Sony/PSN, Professor TMK.

The fact that Sony removed features that people paid for and held other features people also paid for hostage as leverage is still bullshit.
The fact that Sony allowed Capcom to sell FFDI with what might be the most retarded DRM policy ever conceived is also bullshit.

"Rampant" game sharing? And game sharing is akin to piracy?

I say this as someone who has yet to game share anything with anyone.
Wow, really Capcom?

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/22/final-fight-double-impact-psn-requirement-is-anti-sharing-drm/
Joystiq is fucking retarded. It's beyond anti-gameshare DRM. You can't play offline... PERIOD. The ID that bought it ALWAYS has to be signed in to play.

Internet outage? fuck YOU.
Another person in your house wants to play it? fuck YOU.

Yes, it disables gamesharing, much like the Warhawk/GT5P DRM where it disables play on other activated PS3s for 24 hours... but the requirement of being connected to PSN? fuckING LUDICROUS.

Of course, sharing was a dumb business move in the first place, as good as it is for gamers.

What company would want to put out games on a platform where you're guaranteed to lose a percentage of your sales due to a system condoned by the console manufacturer? so now companies are gonna follow capcom's suit and do this retarded shit.

Another tasty time bomb in Sony's half-baked strategy for the gen and a big reason why XBLA has so many amazing exclusives.

Sony is going to end up charging for PSN--I know they want to. I don't think they can keep this "free" shit up forever, so something's gotta give.
To an extent, I'm happy about it because I do NOT support game sharing at all. It hurts game publishers and everything. I wish game sharing was removed more so than Linux.
Shut the fuck up

And how many shares of Sony do you own?

If ans

oi everyone is so feisty today

Other OS - never cared for it, I buy my consoles for just gaming. Kinda crappy that they removed it, but isnt it in their TOS that they can stop/remove certain things if they want? Kinda like how I cant play Counter-Strike online on 360 anymore. Not saying it is the same, just gave a example.

Capcom DRM - I will stop buying PSN titles if they stick with this. Now THIS is ridiculous.

JSP - shhh!

Cant wait to get home next week so I can play my new 360 :D LOL Never thought I would be happy to play a 360 again after all the crap I went through.

Sheesh, and I thought only us women go through PMS.

One more trophy for God of War, I have to beat the game in under 5 hours. Lovin the cow costume I'm using lol infinite magic FTW.
Aw, quit slapping Erin Grey--it's not her fault! :(

And the cow costume is awesome...until the last boss. :p
I'm actually pretty ticked off there was no option for a new game+ since I had everything completely upgraded. The Challenge of the Gods was even worse, fuck that shit. There's no way of saving your process so I had to restrain myself from breaking my new white DS3 and finally made it through the whole thing in under 2 hours.

I'm blanking on all the amazing exclusives here. There's a bunch of solid shit on XBLA that isn't on PSN, but there's a bunch of solid shit on PSN that isn't on XBLA.

Whether you use it or not, it's still ridiculous.

It's like taking your car in for routine maintenance and having them remove your factory installed stereo because they're afraid you're going to play pirated MP3s on it.

"Hello sir. If you want your ignition/starter repaired, you will have to allow us to remove your factory installed mp3 player. Your choice. You can have a car that will start and drive you places or you can keep your mp3 player, sir. If you don't like it, buy an iPod and take the bus."

It was very useful even then, at least in parts of the final encounter.

Got a Classic Controller Pro in from Gamestop.com (15 dollars after the 25off code) and this thing is super comfortable. Lots of open space to rest your fingers on the back of the controller. Really happy I waited to get one until this came out.

Started Force Unleashed (on PS3). It looks pretty shitastic at the beginning (better on 360). Man, Lucas Arts lacks polish on everything except for their audio is always amazing.
i cant wait till they remove the feature on my n64 to use the expansion pack
they already did. If you go look there's a piece of tape over the expansion port.

This guy in my media class gave a presentation about star wars today and he mentioned how The Force Unleashed was a revolution in gaming like A New Hope was to films

Geo Wars 2
Marble Blast
N+
Omega 5
Pac-Man Championship
Shadow Complex
Space Invaders Extreme

Garou: Mark of the Wolves
KOF 98 Ultimate Match
Metal Slug 3
Samurai Shodown 2
SF2 Turbo
Perfect Dark
Hexic HD
Meteos Wars
Yosumin
Rez HD
Trigger Heart Excelica

I guess most of that is solid shit. the list of PSN exclusives is far smaller.

Have to be online to play?
Nope, can't support that. That's really shitty.

I'm not a fan of game sharing, but that is overboard. Should have just used the standard 24 hour lockout.

Notes:
SF2 Turbo? Moot, HDRemix is on both.
Braid? On both.
UNO? On both.
For some reason, one of the Catan/Carcassonne is available but not in the US store, I think?
Also, Pacman CE rumoured to be coming.
You forgot Castle Crashers, but that's also coming to PSN.

PSN:
Trine
PJ Shooter
PJ Eden
PJ Monsters
Critter Crunch
Fat Princess
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
Flower
Flow
Burn Zombie Burn
WipEout HD
Siren: Blood Curse
Soldner X
Soldner X2
Everyday Shooter
Super Stardust HD
Tekken 5: DR

I'm sure there's more, but I have no experience or feedback with them myself, so I won't comment on those.

also, if you buy 5 games on XBLA, they send a prostitute to your apt to suck you off. Sony had that feature, but it was removed in the latest firmware update. Lots of problems with game sharing that lead to complications in the prostitute service.

There's not a single game on PSN i've ever wanted to download that's not on XBL and is not Wipeout. I only got MVC2 on there because thats the console my stick is for.

The only thing PSN has over XBL is that PSOneClassics for 5-10 dollars >>>>> Xbox Originals for 20. However they both negate each other by having outrageous prices for, resepectively, Games on Demand and Downloadbale PSP Games

And i've had flow for months and i still dont know how to play

That's a lot of fun games you probably missed.
I'm going to guess the number of XBLA titles you have is pretty small too.

*watches funny oblivion videos*
Me: "hah, good 'ol Oblivion. maybe I should pick that up again? it was awesome!"
*impulse buys cheap copy of oblivion on the way home from school and pops it in*
Me: "I've made a huge mistake."
Oblivion: "Nininininininininini!"
