True, I was factoring in doing all the recruitment and loyalty missions as main story.
You really miss a lot if you don't do all of those IMO as that's the bulk of the story in the game.
You don't miss so much by skipping the anomaly missions you find from scanning planets etc.--just exp and minerals etc. I loved doing them, but if one's not a huge fan of the series, I don't think they'd really miss much by not doing them.
But they'd miss a ton by not recruiting all the characters and doing all their loyalty missions as those are the best part of the game.
While the loyalty stories and recruitment quests are the majority of the game, they really have little to no effect on the main story, other than the ending. That was my problem with the game -- it's solid, but looking back on it after 2 playthroughs (1000/1000 too), I feel the story sucked an assload of donkey cock. I still maintain that the entirety of the 5 main story missions felt less like the "Empire Strikes Back" episode of the series and more like the "Hey, it's a generic episode of the Space/Sci-Fi Saturday morning cartoon show".

I thought Dante's Inferno was solid -- the new game+ mode was kind of cool -- but after you hit greed, the game starts to go downhill -- the last two circles really were lacking, especially the stupid "9 trials" or whatever... and the final boss? If you noticed it, you couldn't un-see it, and that was just unnecessary. Also, the cross mechanic was too prone to spam-abuse and the "gates of hell" mode was absolutely worthless (also 1000/1000).
