GGT #39: Other G

More questions: anyone know if that Mark V armor preorder bonus from GS gives any meaningful advantages? I'd hate to have to get Reach from GS, but I'll probably need all the help I can get as I suck @ Halo.

I just hate the direction everything seems to be going. None of these companies are acting like they care about their customers anymore.

None of the decisions they make seem to be focused on making their customers happy. In a year or two we'll be paying $70 for new games and $20 for access to the multiplayer and another $5/month per game to play it online and xbox live will be $100

fuck you too game industry
Meh, I'd take my game experience with the 360 over any generation from the past.
Same here. Only the 16 bit generation is close for me in terms of number of games I've loved etc.

There are a lot of trends I don't like though--shorter games with DLC shortly after launch, motion controls (been moot on MS, but now Kinect is coming), increased prices from last generation etc.

But it's still be a damn fun generation for gaming IMO.

I guess i'm just annoyed that the xbox live userbase is going to shrink. The price is going to increase and there are going to be less people using it. It's the same with everything, prices keep increasing and barriers to entry keep being built and videogames are never going to be anything than the nerdy odd hobby that's about violence and stupid kids yelling at each other on a microphone.

I think Sony and MS have totally given up on trying to actually get past the stereotypes of this industry and trying to grow the market beyond modern warfare and wii sports. At this point it's just "get as much money as we can out of the people who still care about this stuff while it lasts"

With any luck it will drive some of the damn kids and other annoying people off Live!

But in reality, it will be the more casual players who probably aren't the kids, and shit talkers/racists/homophobes who are spending every free minute on live away and make things worse.

Oh well, I primarily play single player stuff these days so not a major concern for me.
at the risk of cutting off discussion of that epic post i put so much effort in to, this is fucking hilarious:

Really Microsoft?? An increase to $60 per year for XBLive?! Are these ads on every inch of the dashboard not helping at all??

Glad I got 3 years in advance for free.
WTF?!?!?! RAISING the price? fuck off. I managed to get 3 years in advance for free as well, thank god. Ironically, I never use the fucker to play online because my friends don't play on it. I doubt they ever will now.
With any luck it will drive some of the damn kids and other annoying people off Live!
I'm sure they can convince mommy or daddy to fork over the extra $10 ^_^
I was on the phone with a customer service rep to get my CC deleted from XBL a year or so ago. He kept trying to convince me that I was wrong for doing so, but eventually relented under my pressure.

I know they're supposed to try and talk you out of it, but fuck man...
You can delete your cc info on xbox.com no joke... I did it that way and it isn't on file anymore.

Yeah, I was pretty sure they added that feature a while back. I always delete mine after ordering points (will just buy from them when I need points as I'm not big on stocking up in advance unless there's a super good deal).
Meh, I'd take my game experience with the 360 over any generation from the past.
wow.

Personally, I'd say that SNES/PS2 and now that the PS3 is catching up are all equal or better. Then again, I'm not really into online or sending in my console on a yearly basis for repairs.

because that's totally why people buy an xbox, is for the awesome experience of sending it in yearly and you're not trolling at all

With the exception of the N64, I'd say the 360 has been my favorite gaming experience. The online multiplayer is pretty much the only thing that's making me say that, though. I've spent a lot of time online. And I haven't had to send mine in for a while, thank God.

I think the most fun I've had with a console would be the Gamecube, and now the PS3.

Would've been nice to know that in the past, but whatever.

I just found out recently. I added my credit card on file and it wouldn't let me delete it from the 360. I read you could on xbox.com. I figured it was a load, but it was true.
Jman, I've tried that but it doesn't work.
Really? It worked the only time I ever did it. That sucks though. After the horror stories I've heard I would never add it again just to be safe.
 playing online with my friends > all.
Yeah, most of my friends aren't into gaming and the couple who are either don't have Live or don't have a 360. I've had some fun playing online with CAGs though.

As for the 360 being most enjoyable, for me it's just down to the games. Mass Effect 1 and 2 and Gears of War 1 and 2 are very high on my all time favorite games list. Playing the Gears games in co-op with a good friend is maybe my all time favorite gaming experience.

And plenty of other games are up there as well like Bioshock and Halo 3 and Alan Wake. As well as multiplatform stuff like Assassin's Creed 2, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Prince of Persia, Orange Box, RE5, Rock Band 1 and 2 etc. etc.

Only the SNES was really close in terms of number of great games.

SNES/PSX era greatest for me.

Playing with friends in real life > online > else.

Now everyone has grown up and become a voice on a mic, or a line of text in a chat window.

Taking a GB and later a GBA to school to trade/compete was pretty great too.

SNES and PSX were different generations though.

Speaking of GBA, I sorta wish the GBA SP had the same form factor as an old GBA.
Live was overpriced to start with.
You just raised it to $70 with that comment, good job.

I do agree 100% with that. But I think local co-op has been better than every this gen with games like Gears, Halo, RE5 etc. really nailing local co-op.

Back in the day there wasn't a lot of co-op--mostly competitive multiplayer in fighting games, sports games etc. Only co-op I can really think of are beat'em ups like Final Fight, Double Dragon etc.
Armor is cosmetic in Halo.
Ah cool, thanks.

Say, if I put "Halo" in my post, does that mean you'll automatically see it, Trak? :D

I don't really understand why they're raising the price without adding anything other than they've got 360 owners by the proverbial balls.

I've got my Gold subscription paid until next year, and I won't renew after that.

Yeah, we'll the are adding ESPN 3 and Hulu +. I'm guessing that's the main reasons since Hulu Plus is a pay feature on the computer etc., and ESPN 3 fees have to be paid by ISPs to offer it (I don't get it on my current ISP).

Still lame in any case.

Shooter shooter shooter.

Yes they are fun but that's pretty limiting too.

Plenty of non-competitive mp games back then, but I won't write a big list as I'm on a phone. The Mana games come to mind.

Fair enough. Shooters and WRPGs are about all I enjoy anymore.

Forgot about the Mana games as I never played them solo or co-op. I'm sure there are more co-op in other genres back then that I'm not recalling. But it's definitely been more prevalent this gen. Heavy on shooter for sure, but also stuff in other genre's like the X-Men RPGs etc. I can't really get into RPG/story driven games in co-op though. Tried the X-Men one with a buddy and we quickly scrapped it.

Just wistfully thinking of my fave 2player game memories.....

Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Smash TV
Turtles in Time
Contra III

Don't forget Secret of Mana. :(

MS will argue that their costs to maintain Live are increasing and they are just passing those on to the customer, but seriously, all most people want to do is just play with their friends online. They need to tier the service--let people who want just a "basic" level that supports online play pay the $30-40 for that, and then charge for other services as people want them. Kind of like PSN+.

I know this is all inevitable and that everyone is going to charge something for playing online, but they gotta do it right and in steps or I'm just going to say fuck it and be done with all that. I only have so much disposable income for entertainment...

I'd be for the tier service if it was really ala carte.

i.e. I wouldn't be happy if it was $$X for gaming and you had to get that to get the media stuff.

But if I could just pay $20-30 to get all the media stuff I'd be happy since I seldom game online anyway. Really, though, Netflix at least should be free since it's free on the other consoles.
3 player co-op on Secret of Mana baby!

When I found out Secret of Mana was 3 PLAYERS, I actually said "....they can do that?"

This GGT is mooovving fast.

First round of layoffs occurred last friday/today at my workplace. Shit is scary as a recent grad.
because that's totally why people buy an xbox, is for the awesome experience of sending it in yearly and you're not trolling at all
Holy MS defense force, Batman.

I merely stated a fact:

If you own a 360, you're going to have to get it regularly repaired -- the jury is out on the new 360 S, but for original 360 consoles, it doesn't matter which HW revision you get, they all die and they usually do it sooner rather than later.
I like how, adjusting for inflation, Live will now be the same price it launched at. $50 in 2002 = $60 in 2010. Yet there will be an almost infinite amount of bitching about how this is a "ripoff."
Of course. Justifying cost increase because of inflation doesn't offset the fact that people don't automatically make more money when prices go up, unless somehow, everyone got a cost of living pay increase I was not aware of. :p
