GGT #49 is the same as GGT #48, but now it's Episodic and costs $10 too much
I agree that Samus was well portrayed in the past with minimal use of actual dialog; but that doesn't explain what Mr. Beef was pointing out which is that they decided that they needed to NOT do what had worked well in the past and instead try and actually define Samus through dialog, and in doing so seemingly invalidated a lot of what I had personally perceived about Samus's character from the previous games. And perhaps part of that was that Samus was kind of a blank slate before except for her actions in the games so her motivations were left up to the player to imagine, and so everyone already had their own notion of what Samus was like, probably very few of which matched the view that is given in Metroid Other M.
She had a background, albeit vague. All Sakamoto did was take the idea of her parents dying leaving her an orphan, and her being raised by the Chozo and turn that into a yearning for human companionship. Not a bad thing, and the idea definitely fits. But Other M depicts it in a way that is very, very bad. Beyond that, they didn't do a damn thing. There was no character development either. She's still the same as she was before except for this wanting for a relationship that she never had. Well guess what? She doesn't have one here, either.

The only way they can actually save this whole thing is by having her dump Adam out the fucking cargo bay in the next game. If they don't...
She's still the same as she was before except for this wanting for a relationship that she never had.
Not to me. I always imagined Samus, given that she is a bounty hunter, was very individualistic and while she could still follow orders she did what it took to get the job done her way. Given what Other M shows though she is just a puppet that can't function correctly unless her male counterpart tells her exactly what to do.

I used to really look up to Samus as a strong female game character, after Other M I have a really hard time doing that.

I forgot I even played through Other M. It was a fun game though, just not outstanding. All that really needs to be said about the story is that it's written by some guy who had no idea how to handle the subject matter, who is most likely sexist in ways he doesn't even realize. womanhood to him is babies and looking up to strong-but-distant patriarchs--samus almost feels like stereotypical highly submissive Japanese housewife, Adam being the strict salary man.

but New Vegas is pretty damn good and memorable.

my top 3 for the year:
--Bayonetta (suck it darknessbannedfromgaf)
--Fallout New Vegas
--Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
They did it in Fusion and I thought they did a great job with it. Part of the reason why Fusion is my favorite.

I never cared for scanning shit to find out pieces of a story that wasn't really worth finding out.
Now I'm glad I skipped Fusion.

Finally got the last trophy in Costume Quest for using all of the costume abilities. I missed the cat and vampire and figured out that I should use them both when I retried the last boss fight to get it, though you'd probably be screwed if you had more than three left at that point.

I'd love to see a sequel set a year later with all four taking on more monsters. I loved the Arrested Development joke in the last area (
A kid in a banana costume says "Like the kid in the $600 banana suit is gonna follow the kid with the $20 suit. C'mon!"
).

If you warp back to other areas, the random monsters re-appear. Like the graveyard area in the first level or the second floor of the mall in the second.

They don't if you've thoroughly killed them all. And if you're at the end of the game with all of the costumes, you'll kill them before you can build up a special. They're all permanently gone at that point.

I killed everything that moved but figured what you did about killing them before you build enough special... you could probably use ability stamps like TP to get your special to build? I thought it took 2 rounds for special to build and be available the 3rd -- if you give all your people special abilities, you might be able to work it...

I didn't have to worry though, I only missed unicorn, so I used it in the final battle and got the trophy. :)

Fusion is the second best metroid game and easily has the best story in any.

I was more referring to enemies in the first area since they're level 4 and are easy to kill even if you mess up the button cue.

I see where you're coming from and I don't think it's an accurate representation of the character (and I doubt a lot of people think that). But I honestly don't know where/what they can do from here. Whether it was intended or not, the current situation is much more grim than I originally thought because of how Fusion ends. Either she learns a lesson in the next game and gets rid of him, or it continues and we're screwed.

Like I said before, I hope it was all unintentional that led to a lot of bad results.

Yeah, this is what I always thought of Samus, too, and Other M ruined her for me. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to play a Metroid game the same way ever again. It just doesn't feel right.

I was about to make my top 3, but I was just notified that Gamefly sent Fable 3 and it'll be here on Wednesday, so I'll withold judgement for that.

There's a cat, too? Goddammit, I thought I'd missed one! I also lawled at the Gob line.

I haven't played enough big hitters this year, but I think FFXIII and ME2 are deserving candidates. It's too bad GT5 won't come out until llate December, it would probably have won some awards.

(1) at Fable 3 being good enough to be in anyone's GOTY list. ;)
(2) Yes, panther is unlocked by getting all the trading cards.

Hard to say top 3 for me, but in no order, favorites from this year:

Dead Rising 2
SSF4
Bayonetta
Final Fantasy 13
Darksiders
Red Dead Redemption
God of War 3

--

Metroid Fusion, I remember being great. I think I might still have it around somewhere... and I remember it being short. Now I'm tempted to go play it.

I was out of town over the weekend. On the flight home, I got a chance to play some NBA Jams Tournament edition.....(SNES) that game is still fun..... All this talk about the new NBA Jams just made me want to play the original (one of the originals).

Man I really don't know what I would pick for my top 3 since I haven't really beaten many recent games this year (and some of the ones I have like Halo Reach were good but weren't all the impressive), I guess maybe:

1. Monster Hunter Tri (Wii)
2. Costume Quest (PSN)
3. Picross 3D (DS)
Just beat Costume Quest and got all the tropies. Really great game, I'd love to see either DLC or a sequel.
Hopefully double fine makes a sequel with some VA this time... maybe a few other improvements too.

I agree, I really wanted some VO for some of the characters, especially Bojonn, I really liked him. Length and replayability are my only real complaints about it.

Dead Rising 2 is my candidate for GOTY.

I know I'm really really late on this, but JSP was right a bunch of pages ago. Firefly is pretty overrated.
VA would have probably killed some of the laughs for me in CQ.
Actually I'll agree with that at first I was missing the voice acting, but by the end I really didn't mind and didn't really miss it. As far as Costume Quest's length I felt like it was just right, and while the game isn't really very replayable, the fact that I very rarely replay games means that replayability is not something I ever really worry about.

I don't want it forced -- optional is fine... but some of the text bubbles went by way too fast to read it all and I think some of the longer scripted scenes could have been well done with kid VA talent. Don't force it on people, allow them to turn it off... but please include it, especially for the $15 a head you're charging with the length and replayability of the game.

So I've realized that Castlevania is a dodgefest and I should not play it like I played GoW. And I should definitely stay out of the air at all times.

As for my Top 3. Mass Effect 2 is differently in there. I'll withhold on the other two spots until I can remember what came out this year.

It seems I'm the only one who thought of Samus as a blank slate...

I've been playing Fallout NV all day. My Companion(Veronica) keeps disappearing on me... I think I'll stop playing for a while and hope that patch that,

Everyone naming ME2 in their top 3 reminds me it came out this year. I completely forgot...mainly because I just recently played it a couple months ago. In my top 3 too though along with Yakuza 3 and...something else. Not sure what.

Unrelated note: can't decide if I should pre-order Hot Pursuit on 360 or PS3. Any of you getting it/for which system?

My top 3 right now is:

1. Mass Effect 2--this isn't getting dethroned. One of my all time favories.
2 Halo Reach
3. Bioshock 2 (this one could get dethroned by something like Fallout NV when I get around to playing it, or other fall games)

Surprised someone hasn't had Alan Wake in their list yet.
Also surprised that so many people put ME2, which I found to be solid but disappointing, in their top games list.

ME2 had issues but it's definitely still a deserving contender IMO. What didn't you like about it (besides the superficial character development and absence of a narrative)?

These lists need more Deadly Premonition.

My top 5 so far (because I'm terrible at narrowing stuff down):
-Deadly Premonition
-Enslaved
-Bioshock 2 (especially Minerva's Den)
-Dead Rising 2
-Super Mario Galaxy 2

Honorable mentions for Alan Wake, ME2, Heavy Rain, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Bayonetta. (I could go on...this has been a great year)

And Costume Quest is my downloadable GOTY with honorable mentions to Limbo and Super Meat Boy.

Also, Professor Layton 3 and Valkyria Chronicles 2 are my top 2 portable games this year.
Alan Wake might be my 3rd.

What other sorta big games came out this year?
From what I can remember -- and big doesn't mean good, necessarily... just big name or big advertising, that sort of thing here:

Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
God of War 3
Bayonetta
Super Street Fighter 4
Dead Rising 2
Crackdown 2
Fallout New Vegas
Castlevania Lords of Shadow
Halo Reach
Bioshock 2
Final Fantasy 13
Blazblue: Continuum Shift
Darksiders
Dante's Inferno
Alan Wake

Mostly the reasons you state -- it's very solid gameplay, but nothing from the soldier class made the gameplay standout to me. I also didn't find myself caring about or invested in the characters either. Mordin was great, and I kind of liked Grunt, but after that, they're all just sort of "who cares" to me...

When I look back on it, I expected epic, and I just felt a whole lot of disappointment. It was a solid game to playthrough, but I just can't personally elevate it passed the "good/solid" game level and I find it surprising that without fail, 9-10 months after it's release, 90% of the lists have it as the first game mentioned.

A better way to word it is "Surprised at how many put it in their lists, considering how disappointed I was with the game."

I can definitely see how you would feel that way if you didn't care much for the characters. That game pretty much revolved around the characters and their backstories, so if there were only a couple characters you liked, then the game wouldn't mean much to you. Also, the soldier class is the most boring class in the game, but that alone wouldn't have a huge impact on your impressions of the game overall. Classes really only affect the battles by making them a bit more interesting with certain abilities. For instance, I played as an Infiltrator, which involved a lot of turning invisible to sneak away, and disabling enemy shields before sniping them. Overall, it's a game that I really enjoyed, but I can totally see why not everyone will think it's all that great.

We're doing Top 3 lists?

1. Bayonetta
2. BlazBlue Continuum Shift
3. Super Street Fighter IV

EDIT: Oh wait, top 5?

4. God of War 3
5. Bioshock 2

... Wow, I'm actually saddened that Bioshock 2 made it to the top 5.
