I lost the fight long ago with my 120GB slim. I got to the point where I play more games regularly that I must install, and also ran into issues not being able to store many PSN games at once (especially since a bunch I got were over 1GB). My HDD space issues were keeping me from buying certain content or buying more games with HDD installs. Unfortunately, my first back-up failed.

( I just tried again after deleting more installs.
I was having problems like that, but now I just delete whatever games' install I get done with and keep just a few PSN games on my HDD. I still don't have a lot of space, though. I guess I keep too many videos on my PS3.
TMK, you have to be PSN+.
Just push the large majority of your saves to the cloud (as much as you can fit), then swap the new drive in and be done with it (so long as fw 3.60 doesn't have th HDD install issues).
Yeah, it will take a bunch of time to redownload your games and patches and such, but probably the same if not less than attempting backup of an an almost full drive of whatever size you have.
This is what I've been doing, too. Just throwing up whatever saves I'm not using right this moment to the cloud.
Did you guys enjoy drunk me last night? I DID.
YES! I wish you didn't leave, JSP.
