God of War: Chains of Olympus Thread - Out Now! - 1up: 9.5, IGN: 9.4, GS: 8.5

I like the red but not necessarily the etched face.....other than that Im thinking about picking up this baby...

I am getting that slim. I have missed out on a ton of special edition consoles. Not this time. The color is sweet and I like God of War. I recently picked up a silver slim, but I am returning it and getting the red one!

Man. I really hope the rumors that this will be ported to PS2 are not true. I really want this bundle. But considering Sony's trend of porting their AAA PSP titles to PS2, I wouldn't be surprised.

PSP SLIM $170 + GOW $40 + Superbad $20 + Syphon Filter: Combat Ops $10 = $240 value from $200 is not bad deal. Hope Game Rush have this bundle cos i still have over $500 Game Rush Credit :)

I hope it does because i personally would rather play a sony game using a PS2/PS3 controller over the PSP controls. Plus a bigger screen. I dont care if its an exact port and comes out at 40 bucks. I would still rather play it on ps2/ps3.

If you really want this bundle than why does it matter if it comes out on PS2 as a port? Buy the bundle. Thats almost like those idiots that say "oh i wish this multiplatform title was exclusive to this console"...it just doesnt make sense.

i don't give a damn about how those people finish a game in less than 5 hours! #1, i'm not him/her, i.e. i don't play games for a living (if you're, then sorry, my post is not for you). #2, i'm not quick with fingers, i.e. not a great gamer, so yeah, i die a lot in GoW games, so if something suppose to take 5 hours, for me it's more like 8-10 hours. #3, i'm anal, i like to explore and horsing around, no way in hell you can beat a game in 5 hours if you do that kind of thing. #4, i don't have that kind of time on my hands, so even if it's really a 5-8 hour game, big deal, if it makes me feel good beating it and enjoying it, it worth the investment (both time and money).

They likely didn't take any time to explore the environments for hidden treasures/orbs/etc. That alone would likely add another hour or two to the completion time. It was on normal, and for me, a 6-7 hours game on normal for the PSP is fine by me. I usually play in short 1-2 hour bursts so this is perfect if you ask me. Plus, they played it on normal, so i could easily bump the difficulty up for my second play-through.

That GOW PSP bundle is tempting, but June!? Yeesh. Hope it looks less like Target red too.

They could have done a better job with design and integration though. These stupid floating head (Vader, natch) exclusives are cheap and easy cop outs for Sony to produce.

I'm not exactly impressed with slapping on a cover pic and calling it exclusive -- lose/replace that cover and there goes the uniqueness. Meanwhile, the more elaborate themed bundles in Japan taunt us from overseas.

At least it's another color to choose from. Smart move with packing a newly released game rather than another GH like Daxter.

Well because I kind of want a PSP again, and this would be a great bundle to get. But then, if it does come to PS2, I probably would not pick up a PSP. It's a double edged sword. I want a PSP mainly for this, Patapon, and maybe Wipeout. But I have a feeling all of those games will appear on other Sony platforms, which again deters me from getting a PSP.

Nah, having a portable GoW trumps being tied down to any PS2/3. No console port for you!

It's very convenient to pick up and play PSP games anytime, anywhere. My PS2 hasn't seen the light of day for a long time and I have a backlog of games to get to. The hassle of hooking it up and plopping in front of the tv for hours has lost appeal.
so anyone else heard that this game is 5 hour game?
A few pages back, yes. Doesn't matter considering it looks and plays amazing. As for replay value, the game at it's core is made to be replayed. Up the difficulty or play Challenge of the Gods and you're set.
so anyone else heard that this game is 5 hour game?
I heard that it was 7 hours. That's actually very little for the price we are paying. The extras aren't even on GoW2's level PLUS that game was long (shit went on forever, so epic).

I'll still get it... eventually. I think Daxter was longer than this :(

I just braved a snow storm and almost not being able to get the game due to morans(yes, morans) at Best Buy. I am about to play.
Looks like GameSpot just reviewed the game and gave it an 8.5.
That's about .5 too low for me. They said "Very, very little in the way of new gameplay elements" yet this is a prequel to the first game i believe so how can you really have new gameplay elements without ruining the integrity of the series/first two games?

Also, when gameplay is perfect, why would you change it?

I just rocked that big monster from the demo. Great game so far. I can't believe I am playing this game on a handheld system.
Also, when gameplay is perfect, why would you change it?
Exactly. I could understand taking off a point (9.0) for the game being 5-7 hours long on normal, and the lack of large bosses, but considering the graphics, the effects on screen, and the near perfect translation of the controls, gameplay, and atmosphere of the first two, this game deserves nothing less than a 9.0.

see: devil may cry 3.

still on the fence about this game. The demo is fun, but the demos for 1 and 2 were great as well, while the full game ended up being kinda meh.

GameSpot is the only review place as of now that gave this game LOWER than a 9/10. After Gerstmann Gate, I have a hard time taking reviews from this site too seriously. With this review, it seems they hate on the game because it doesn't bring in "new gameplay elements". Personally the big draw of this game (for me at least) is it plays so similar to it's PS2 brothers. The gameplay in GoW1 and 2 rocked. I'm thrilled I can have the same experience on the go with my PSP with a brand new story and environments.

They do however have a valid complaint the game is too short. I'm a slow gamer and expect this to take me 8-10 hours if they say six hours but damn, that's still short.

In their reviews, I really feel GameSpot tries to award "innovation" over "fun gameplay". Personally, I don't think a fun game has to be a particularly innovative one to be a AAA game. IMO the gameplay of GoW1 and 2 have not gotten stale and I'm glad they could recreate this experience with CoO. In the end though, 8.5 is still a very good score and did seem the reviewer did enjoy the game a lot. I just felt it lost some points for "lacking innovation" that really shouldn't matter.

Anyways, just ordered my copy on Buy.com for $28.99. Can't wait for it to come in!

Is there a Dolby Pro-Logic II option for sound?

I know Monster Hunter had this.
I can sense the GAF meltdown with that score already.
I have never understood anger with a review score. They could rate a game 0 for all I care, if I like it I play it. The score is irrelevant. It's the comments written that matter.

Yeah, i no longer go to GameSpot for my reviews. Information, maybe, but definitely not reviews. This review furthers that stance. Their priorities for the game are completely lacking if one of their flaws/cons was that the game didn't bring any new gameplay elements to the table. Simply put, it's a prequel, therefore they (the developers) have to stick to what the previous games already have.

I ordered from Amazon and I could be getting it as late as next Tuesday. I order with two day shipping... Granted I did pre-order only days in advance.

I played little over an hour and I love it. My only complaint is that the analog (at least for me) takes some time to get used to during the little minigames, and the dodging as well. I had the same problem with the MGS PO controlls/camera and I learned them so I shouldn't have a problem with this game.

My other complaint is that before cutscenes, it feels like the game freezes up for like five seconds, and then the cutscene happens. I'm playing on a fat PSP so maybe that's why.

I still can't believe this is on a handheld. It feels just like a PS2 game. I went to a couple different GS to pick it up, and each one said the game was selling like crazy. I hope it does really well and it's nice to see the PSP shine.

Not that I saw. So probably not.
I think I'll pick this up tommorow when I get paid. The PSP is really shining right now with all these great games. :D
Want to save money and buy mine? [/shameless plug]

I finished it on easy in 4 hours and change. Great game. But I really have no reason to go back to the game now.

I'll PM you.

Mine just shipped from Amazon. I used Super Saver, and it has an estimated delivery date of 11th. In my experience the dates are usually very conservative, so hopefully I get it sooner. :]

No PS2 port according to the devs:

Moving forward, we can confirm that Chains of Olympus will be our last PSP game as we’re moving on to other projects and other ideas on other consoles. We can also confirm that this will be our last God of War game as, just like Daxter before it, there will NOT be a PS2 port of the game. We like our games PSP exclusives
No PS2 port according to the devs:
I believe Rockstar also said Vice City Stories was not going to be ported. They must have changed thier mind in 6 months. lol. I think its all sales marketing. They have to say that so people buy the PSP version and dont wait for the port to come. I still see a PS2 port coming out by early next year. Unless its some kind of download for the PS3.
Their other game was never ported (Daxter) , but you may be right.

Significant sales may change that.
Well i think the demand is there, especially for those who dont want to buy a psp just to play this game, like me. There really isnt any games on PSP that i want other then God of War. So porting it will just make more sales, even the PSP owners might buy the PS2 port to play it on a bigger screen and more comfortable controller. Usually these ports cost 30 bucks, but id even pay 40-50 if it was ported to PS2. Even if it didnt have graphics inhanced or anything added to it.

This game is not worth 50 dollars.

I don't remember but I thought R* always danced around this question. When asked about a PS2 port back in summer 2006, I just remember them saying things like "we don't have any plans to right now" and never anything like "this game will ALWAYS be a PSP exclusive" which is more the tone I get with this RaD interview.

Also, R*'s greed killed them with sales for VCS. They charged $50 for this game when it first launched at a time when ALL new release PSP games were $40. At least when LCS came out there were some other devs still charging $50 for their PSP games. They really just expected every PSP owner would just buy the game seeing the "Grand Theft Auto" label and somehow forget their game was a good $10 more expensive than any other PSP game.

Yes you can beat it in about 5 hours, and nearly max your character on the first run through. With your saved data you can go through the game again on the same difficulty in about an hour.

However this is a QUALITY game all the way through, production value is through the roof and deserves a full price day 1 purchase, EASILY.

For everyone complaining about length, this game nearly maxes out the UMD size too. Don't forget the UMD holds less than half a single layer DVD.

Not only that, but the game is just a blast to play. Simple as that. Great action/adventure game.

The game was a blast. The story was poignant and it tied the series together very well. I know a lot of people are concerned about the length of the game but for me it was perfect. It took me a little over 5 hours to beat the game and I maxed out my character. Other than a few platforming/camera issues I have no real complaints.

Anyhow, I'm off to finish up my appellate brief.

Not to mention its a portable game on a system with limited battery life.
