Going to Japan - what should I get?

I'm going to be in Japan for 2 weeks at the end of March. We'll be hitting up Tokyo for sure. I've got a PS3 a Wii and a DS. I put this thread in this forum because my question concerns all 3. Anyway, what games should I pick up? I'm not a huge RPG fan, but I've been drawn into a few recently. I don't think I've ever really played a proper JRPG.

Any accessories I should pick up? TIA.

If you are not familiar with JRPGs, then dont get one in Japan unless you can read Japanese.

If you got PS3 a Dual Shock would be a great pick up

Yeah, I was thinking both those things - that a JRPG would be too much and that a DS3 would be a good pickup. Someone in the PS3 forum recommended Railfan so I'll look into that... Are there any games with good trade value? I *am* a cheapass gamer, after all. :D

I'm also interested in suggestions because my gf and I are planning a trip to Tokyo in May after the semester is over. I had already planned and have started saving for spending lots of moneys in Tokyo.

What would be a good use for this? Do people still play DC games online, or are you suggesting resale on ebay? Just curious because I haven't played my DC in a while.

Haha! A co-worker of mine told me the same thing. He also visited some place that had its front door made up to look like a giant vag.

There is a way to patch the PC version of Quake 3 [v3.17 I think] and run a server .
I would connect to it with to BB adapter .

I don't think my wife and 1 year old son would like that too much. :p

Keep the suggestions coming! Real or just funny. I'm excited about this trip, even though I've got to miss March Madness (Go Heels!) to go.

Get a pokemanz! If I was there, I would look for some kind of small little video game related toy. Like a Mini-Mario from Mario vs Donkey Kong. I would love something like that. I don't know much about all the import games from there. I can't read Japanese, so I don't have much interest in them.

Get toys that you can't get where you live (so says the toy collector!).

Gaming-wise, there are tons of neat DS accessories that come out of Japan, so there's that as well.

Anyone know *where* I should go to get this stuff? Is there a shopping district or something? Anyone living in Japan now? (I know CheapyD does, but I don't expect him to chime in here - I'm just a lowly forum user. :D)

Like sleepyking posted earlier go to Akihabara. That's the otaku district. You won't need a map. You'll be overwhelmed with it all. Also if you see one head over to a "Book Off" They're everywhere. Along with books/manga they also sell used games. I've found some great deals in there.

As for arcade you must play this Gundam simulator, it'll cost you 500 yen a pop for about 8 minutes, but worth it:

But don't go halfway around to world just to buy video games. However without a guide it's kinda hard to see some of the more intresting things. Some things to do: eat real ramen, eat Yaki-niku (expensive), Visit Tokyo Tower, shrines (which can be found everywhere) if you're not to shy go to a hot spring or bath house. And since you're going at the end of March you should be in time for the Sakura, but I'm sure you know that.

EDIT - Kamakura is a historical district for some nice sight-seeing.

Akihabara is a fucking joke. I went from Yongsan in Korea to Aki and was very disappointed. I expected it to be a wet dream for a gamer such as myself. No this didn't happen. Poor selection of Old School stuff compared to what I expected.
My suggestion would be for you to buy a PC-FX. That's the Japan only sequel to the TG16. Shipping price is a bitch but buying it up close in Japan shouldn't cost you that much. It has a game called "Team Innocent" which looks quite nice and may have come out before or about the same time as RE. You also have "Battle Heat" which is an all animated fighter. Seriously pick one up dude.

Well, my wife is chinese and I'm egyptian and we've got a son, so I've got at least that one covered. :D

I dunno, I thought Akihabara was great. Maybe that's just me, though. I only had a couple of hours to look at everything on the street and then I had to get back to my hotel to eat dinner but I thought it was cool. No old school stuff. However, I did discover a shop that was videogames on the first floor and adult videos and books on the next three. I had no clue. I saw the sign and it said games then for the floors above it had Japanese written and then "DVD" and "Book" written for the 2nd - 4th floor. I guess all those characters had to do with adult stuff.

Anyways, go look for exclusive DVD box sets that they don't have here. I remember seeing the Kill Bill 2 box set for about $65 US and then kicking myself when I got back here to see that it was selling for $110 or so online from import shops. The collector's sets they have there are just too good.

Never been to Korea so I can't compare the two, but I visited a butt load of awsome places in Aki, just too many to count. I didn't hang out there too much. I visited Ikebukuru and Shinjuku extensivly. With that said my wife's cousin is one of those mania kids that hangs out in Aki, he knew area damn well and showed me some very intresting places. You should see this kid play Pop n' Music & Beatmania.

equest943 - I found that DVDs (especially boxsets) were way too expensive in Japan. In fact Japan is not cheap in general, that's why I say to find a "Book Off." They often have a wall or rack for 100yen games.

Dude just get a buttload of Transformers and other robots, preferably chunky diecast chogukin metal goodness, and resell that shit in the states for a king's ransom.

Oh and aren't the more recent Japanese RPGs, such as for Wii and PS3, dubbed with English or at least English subtitles? Don't tell me they are still Japanese only, that is whack. But I don't even know if Wii games are region encoded/blocked. I know PS3 games are not.
What is the Japanese obsession with rape...
It's more like Americans obsessed with Japanese rape.

My sister-in-law is in Okinawa and we're stopping in Tokyo for 4 days on the way back to the states. So, pleasure. :)

Didn't come from nowhere. Think of that, now think about the fact that it's not taboo for the average AV Idol to do a rape porno.

I do agree that those parts of the culture are a bit exaggerated by Americans, but still.

That sentence can be interpreted in a variety of ways....

At anyrate torifile, if you could get me Foxxi misQ's and Crystal Kay's phone numbers and some nice signed photographs then I'd owe you big time. :bouncy:

Well Yongsan is the Electronics place in Seoul. First I went to this department store building. Apparently they had different floors dedicated to specific shit. They had one dedicated to games. Granted this wasn't all full mind you, not in the least. It wasn't bad but nothing spectacular. Well a friend takes me back there mentioning that's an ADDITION to Yongsan and showed me the rest of it. I mean it wasn't spread out like Aki but fuck. I mean they had so many flea shops just together in ONE building, it was nuts. Wall to wall of video games or almost all wall to wall. I wanna say # of video game booths/shops just exceeded Aki easily.
When I went to Aki by comparison I was disappointed by the # of shops they had.
