Grammy nominated King Diamond screams "Metal Heads Unite!!"
I just picked up the new Nile at Rasputins, Berkeley for $10.99 (Sale price).

I guess that makes me a cheapassmetalhead. I can't wait till I get home and crank it out. I haven't heard any the tracks yet
The new album came out on my birthday, I picked it up for $10.99 aswell. My favorite songs so far are Eat of the Dead and The Essential Salts. Next on the list for album buys is the new Obituary album and that Evile album.

I'm surprised at all the new Thrash bands out there that are keeping the original thrash sound alive. Bands like Violator, Toxic Holocaust, Dekapitator, Sanitarius and the widely known Municipal Waste(which I don't really care for, they're decent I guess). Anyway, if you guys love old school thrash, these bands keep the thrash spirit alive, you'll think it's 1986 listening to these guys. Here are some download links, if you like it please support the band and buy the album...

Violator - Chemical Assault AWESOME ALBUM! DOWNLOAD NOW.

Well I played the Nile album 3 times last night. I like it but surprisingly it's not as brutal as I thought it would be. I think this album is more in the flavor of "Black Seeds of Vengence" in a way. Still, its a strong record but "In the Darkened Shrines" is still my favorite.

One album I've been looking for but never can't seem to find in the record stores is the new Trouble album. Do any of you guys have that?

Picked up used cds by Sunn and Boris at the record store yesterday, along with Opeth's "Ghost Reveries." Sadly, the store had its worst day in history (and it's a store I frequented long enough that I remember sitting there the morning Metallica's s/t album came out, waiting for the doors to open).

I can't come to grips with it closing (which it will surely do before the end of the year). iTunes, internet piracy, and big box stores have killed my beloved indy record store (not necessarily in that order).

Never realized you were a Boris fan. Which album did you get?
Rainbow.
Good album, bar the annoying solos.

Sucks about the record shop too. I don't know how I'd live without the two indie ones I have over here.

I know. I used to work next door to it for years, so it's not just the record store failing - it's people I know and like losing their jobs and not collecting paychecks. I wanted to spend $50 in there last night just on principle, but can't afford to. I did look for that EHG tribute album, though. They didn't seem to have it.

It always sucks when mom and pop record stores close down. Here in Maryland the indie stores are doing okay I guess, thanks to underground hip hop fans and metal heads. I was really surprised at the number of indie record stores in Pennsylvania, I've been collecting vinyl records for awhile now and there's always two or three record stores that have a great selection of old metal vinyls, way better selection than any other record store I've been to in the East Coast.

Thats sucks. I used to work for an indie record store in Cleveland. At the time, there was no Best Buy or Circuit City around- only those really bad Mall record stores. It was a great experience discover all types of new bands and stuff. Now I live in the bay area, all I shop the indie record stores like Rasputins and Amoeba (and Streetlight in San Francisco). I always make it a point to support the indie record stores....

About the only good mom and pop store here is a place called Camp Zama. I hope they're still open as I haven't driven by there in several months. Granted they deal in mostly goth and industrial, avante-gard and experimental, they have a damn good selection of everything else. Last I remember, they had an original pressing of Gary Numans The Pleasure Principle for about 200 bucks on vinyl. One of the things they tout if you have a special order, esp for vinyl, is they're very good at finding deleted albums. Was told once that they found an album for this on guy (I believe they said it was a jazz album or something of the like) in a short period of time, when no one else knew it ever existed and couldn't find it. Plus the staff there is ALWAYS extremely laid back. I shot the shit with this one woman (one of the several times actually) well past their closing. I told her that I better shut my trap and get going because they were like 2 mins from closing, and she was pretty much like "don't worry about it your fine". She remembered me 1 year later after not comming in for a bit. Also, shes in her early 40s (so it seems), and shes VERY knowledgeable on genres such as power noise and the like, not to mention a HUGE JG Thirlwell fan.

Granted, they may be a couple of bucks more, but I feel better supporting them and on top of that, its always stuff that you will not find in stores or want to shell out a lot more money online and have it imported over here directly from a small indie label. Like my copy of Whitehouses first album on CD, The Birth Death Experience.

I'm REALLY hoping that there are a couple of good mom and pop stores in Memphis when I move there.

Does anyone listen to Overdose? I heard one of their songs on Music Choice, it said they were from Brazil. Do they have an early Sepultura like catalog or were they just a 90s band? The song I heard was decent but I could tell it came from the 90s.
Wow...there is a metal encyclopedia?

I was using www.allmusic.com for my reference needs...
Yes sir, great site. The user reviews for albums are awesome too, clear and intelligent reviews. There's a review on there for Master of Puppets that some user gave a 0%. After reading it I agreed that Master of Puppets ruined thrash metal and is way too overated, but I still think it's a good album. The problem is that the album got way too much attention, it came out in 1986. Know what other thrash albums came out in 86? Reign In Blood, Bonded By Blood, Darkness Descends, and Pleasure To Kill. I liked Ride The Lightning better anyway. Check out the review here http://www.metal-archives.com/review.php?id=547 look for the "The album that killed heavy metal " title.

Again, I don't totally agree with the review, but it does make some interesting points.

just got back from ozzfest, pretty damn good overall even though there were a lot of shitty bands. I got Behemoth's lead singer to write "happy birthday" to me on their poster

i got into the venue right when they were finishing up, but from what i heard, yea it did seem stale

New Obituary album got leaked. And, it's fucking awesome, Ralph Santolla layed down the guitar tracks. Definite buy for Death Metal fans when it comes out.

I have to revise my opinion of the "Lost Tracks of Danzig" album. It's worth it for their cover of David Bowie's "Cat People (Putting Out Fires)" alone. I can't listen to that track enough.

Don't bother with reviews on MA, they're full of shit. Most of the time it's just metalheads wagging their br00tal or gr1m e-penis' around at each other as to who can be more underground, writing 0% reviews because Cradle of Filth isn't tr00, or some new grind doesn't have enough metal influence (bearing in mind that grind is punk derived).

I only ever use the site to check what releases a band has, track listings, and the links at the bottom.

Yeah the reviews are usually crap (how can an album only get 1%?), but I just read them to see if anyone names similar bands to one I have no clue about.

Has anyone gotten the Toxik reissues? I'm not for spending 20 bucks plus online and haven't had luck coming across them in record shops.

Yeah the reviews can be ridiculous at times, any heavy metal music website is going to have elitest pricks. I don't trust reviews for music or video games, but some of the reviews do make sense after you've actually listened to the said album(new Malevolent Creation album). Oh and Blackout, if you liked Overdose check out Violator.

Great review of Impetigo's last show http://www.vampire-magazine.com/article.php?aid=43654

This upcoming September has some new juicy releases:

High on Fire - Sept 18
Black Sabbath Live at Madison Square Garden - Sept 25

Bands I've been listening to recently that I hadn't before...

Angra
Crimson Moonlight
Dark Lunacy
Eternal Tears of Sorrow
Immortal Souls
Heavenly
Luca Turilli
Mors Principium Est
Theory in Practice

I'd recommend them all.

Massive fail. Squash Bowels is awesome.

Picked up Kill by Cannibal Corpse and Sleep's Holy Mountain today. Also got my Bongripper album in the mail. Good day.

Nice pick with the Sleep album, very underrated Stoner/Doom metal band. And, Squash Bowels is going to be awesome live! Martyr just got added to the lineup, you guys should check them out if you love technical death metal.

I would hardly call Sleep underrated. Every sludge/doom/stoner fan I've ever talked to has raved about them. They deserve every bit of praise though. Dragonaut = bliss

EDIT: If you like Sleep, or sludge bands in general, check out Bongripper. They're an awesome band, their album is only 7 bucks, and well worth it.

Will check out, have you heard of Tarpit? They're a local doom/stoner metal band (their may actually be a decent metal scene in Maryland now that I noticed this band, some grindcore acts, and Toxic Holocaust), picked up their demo acouple of weeks ago. Check 'em out. http://www.myspace.com/tarpitmd

Their myspace page is not playing music. Thats too bad because I'm a fan of doom/stoner metal.

I've been listening to the new Goija album. I bought this record over a year ago but it didn't grab me back then. Now, I'm listening to it some more and I'm starting to dig it some more. Sometimes I buy cds and I don't get into them until months later. That was true for Mudhoney's Self Titled album when it came out.

I'm really looking forward to the new Exodus and Overkill, whenever they come out. Also that Judas Priest concept album, whenever the hell that's coming. High on Fire are good, I think I have their 2005 cd with the single Devilution on it (or something like that). I haven't listened to them in a while.

Does anyone have any opinion on Dekapitator? I saw the cd at a record shop, said for "fans of Exodus, Megadeth bla bla every thrash band ever created." It was 15 bucks and I don't want to go in for a blind purchase. I have been out of the loop on the metal stuff (started listening to hardcore and stuff) but now I'm kinda back into it. Any fans?

It's an okay album, I'm assuming The Storm Before the Calm was the album you saw at the record store? There's been a lot of new bands recently capturing that old school Thrash sound. Dekapitator is decent, but I don't think I would spend $15 on the album. I heard about them from a friend and was surprised to find out that the band was formed by 2 guys in Exhumed. You should really check out Toxic Holocaust, Violator, Skeletonwitch, or even Municipal Waste if you're looking for new thrash bands with an old school sound. I really recommend Toxic Holocaust and Violator though. Speaking of Thrash, did you guys hear Gammacide is working on a new album? Now all we need is a new Rotting Corpse demo! Haha or maybe those guys can finally put out a full length.

Yeah it was The Storm Before the Calm. Thanks for the suggestion. I might just get it used or something.

Yeah TH is decent. Municipal Waste gets boring really fast for me. Can't believe Gammacide is making a new album.
