FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arkansas, California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.
do you HAVE to get a game today, or can you just take the credit on a card?
You can just get credit.

Bah, just called Gamestop to ask how much TIV for Tekken 6 and Avatar: The Game (both 360), and he told me he couldn't give me that info over the phone...
just traded in mass effect 2 for 56 bones! Hells yeah.
Dang you can get more in credit than paying for the game used w/Edge card. Maybe the TIV's will hold up.
I wonder if Avatar: The Game or Tekken 6 would be a good flip from Family Video ($19.99 Ea.)...
they don't always have the time, nor do they know the condition of the games, if you have an edge card, or if the specific store will defect it out because its not complete.

mostly, they can't be bothered

i'm very tempted to trade in my ME2 since I have a ME2 CE coming in today....

what to do.. what to do. this promotion is spectacular. I gotta think ME2 is gonna drop like a stone tomorrow.

I can confirm that Gamestop did not drop their core values for this deal. I took in mass effect 2 today and got a code value of 35, plus 50% deal plus 10% edge and got $56 trade for one game!!

Just a heads up to anyone in San Fernando Valley, Gamedude is always gonna have a better trade-in value. As an example: Zack and Wiki at gamestop is $2 credit while Gamedude gives $8 cash. Just a heads up to the people in the area.
Sorry to hear that, thats just someone being extremely lazy.
Doesn't GameStop have a policy that requires them to not give out TIVs over the phone? Or is that spiel they always give me a bunch of crap?

There is no policy that hinders them from giving TIV over the phone. Most of the time they feed you that bullshit if they are busy, or just don't want to look anything up.
just traded in mass effect 2 for 56 bones! Hells yeah.
Hmm, so sell / rebuy using edge make a profit, rinse & repeat.
Hmm, so sell / rebuy using edge make a profit, rinse & repeat.
Ughh, I hope I can get my copy to GS fast enough that they don't notice the flipping and kill the deal. I just need to trade in 1!
I wonder if they take Tony Hawk Ride with the board.
Says on the promo page for trade 2 specific games and get $40 off FFXIII or GoWIII that they do. Board's required for that promo.
Or policy.
Speaking as a part time GS employee I can say that there is no policy. Either it was insanely busy and the GS clerk didn't have the time or ability, or yes they could be acting like lazy douches.
PS3 Dark Void - $16.75 Base
PS3 Dragon Age - $19.25 Base
You can get $31.25 for Dragon Age PS3 on Amazon. However w/ the bonus trade in right now, you'd be getting about that @ Gamestop.
Hmm, so sell / rebuy using edge make a profit, rinse & repeat.
Hmm...can you explain how you are making a profit this way? The game is $60 new & I'm guessing about $55 used? Even w/ the EDGE card you're getting the same amount you are paying for a used copy there. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not quite getting how this would be great way to make profit on store credit.

Guessing it's assuming the price of 49.99 they have on their site is in store as well. But says online only price, so I'm not quite sure how to work buying/trading in ME2 without running the risk of it plummeting stupid low by the time you receive it from ordering it online.

I think you get around $3.75 for XBLA Unplugged. Bought a bunch of copies of the game for $2 a pop on ebay. Traded them in to get Devil Summoner 2 w/plush and Chulip.

Looks like I may go trade in a few, not crappy, but games that I never play so I feel like I should take advantage of this deal.

GOODBYE DARK SECTOR FOR GOOD!

Ok, here is how it works (not like it would be the first time I made money flipping games from one GS to another only a mile away)

ME2 In store used price 54.99 (assuming your store has a copy)
used price is $49.49 after edge card discount
Trade price TODAY with 50% promo and 10% edge card bonus = $56

Net result $6.51 free credit by trading from one GS to another.
YMMV on buying from and selling to the same GS location in the same day. (dont be dumb people)

Also Sales Tax has not been figured into this since it is a nonissue if you are using GS credit to pay in many states (see OP) and those that are lucky enough to live in one of the few states that have no sales tax on any retail purchases (like MT)

So before I make the trip, I don't have an edge card but I can still trade games toward the 25% bonus deal (BFBC2) and get the 50% trade in aswell? I've never done much business with them and don't know if I need an edge card to stack that deal.

Was gonna trade: (360)
BF: Bad Company
NFS: Shift (not even opened it yet, suppose I'll have to in order trade it)
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

if the extra 25% stacks with the 50% going on base TIV's I should about have enough to cover Bad Company 2 with those.

Mass Effect 2 is a great trade in $56 total with edge

Alien vs Predator 360 not so much

$22 base TIV
$11 promo
$2.20 edge card
Total=$35.20

Figured I'd post in here to help out jp.

All for 360

Civ Rev - $6.75 base, $10.81 after Promo and EDGE
X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged - $7.25 base, $11.59 after Promo and EDGE
Star Wars: Force Unleashed - $5.00 base, $8.00 after Promo and EDGE
Lost Planet - $1.75 base, $2.81 after Promo and EDGE
Godfather 2 - $5.00 base, $8.00 after Promo and EDGE
Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard - $4.00 base, $6.40 after Promo and EDGE

With all this trade in, picked up Borderlands for about $7. I'm ok with that.
in my local store, it makes no difference if it has HDMI or not. It depends on the controller (wired or wireless)

I wanna say 70-80
I actually asked about trading in my Arcade unit when I traded ME2 this morning. It's still $80.

Ah, I get it now, jp made a new thread which led to me not being subscribed to it any more and thinking the other thread was the "official" one. Stop doing that! ;)

In any case, I have ME2 ready to go as I just finished my Insanity playthrough last night - what a coincidence!

Ill be doing that tonight, but its the PS3 version, which is 20-22 base.

edit : 70 is the TiV for a wired controller, 80 for a wireless, so yea

I've been trying to equate if this deal is really worth me giving gamestop any businees. I just traded in Mass Effect 2 with Amazon for $34 opposed to the $56 I could have received from Gamestop.

The average game I purchase from Amazon runs $56.99 new with $10 gaming credit opposed to the $63.58 it will cost at Gamestop. Making the total investment cost roughly $46.99 for a new title from Amazon and a difference of $16.59 on a new title. Which is roughly the same amount I would have gained from 50% trade in credit.

Now I know this is one scenario and a lot of other deals that don't offer trade in credit the gamestop deal is definitely better. But the lower the trade in of the game the more I think Amazon's cheaper prices and no tax are a better investment.

Just food for thought... I really dislike gamestop and think they rob people blind. Any time I can avoid giving them business I am all for it.

Or they don't like doing it because of idiot customers. People all the time ask a tiv for a "almost brand new game" and when they come in it has crap all over it or scratched to hell. Then they get a refurb fee and bitch that "thats not what i was told on the phone". If you were in a line at gs and the employee had to stop ringing people to give 10 tivs over the phone, you'd be glad they told the person no.

yea, i mean, if the store is barren and people are just standing around, 2 over the phone is fine, but if there are customers in line, the dude on the phone can get bent
