FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arkansas, California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.
Yea, really. I sold a ton on ebay and then they charged me almost as much as I sold. I believe Paypal might've dipped in too.
how is that even possible?
how is that even possible?
I sold books on there. It probably ended up being $100 in sales and after everything I had to give $30 of that money up. So after having my books sell at a real low price I ended up getting next to nothing for what the things sold would cost.
Yep. And when I made my account I had to wait like 30 days until I could get the cash, which means I wouldn't have that money in time for FF13 and MLB.

Now, back to the topic because we all know that guys a moron.
if you got a $0.65 delivery confirmation you would have gotten your money immediately. I'm an moron because I get $20- 35 for games you trade for $3-6?? Really?:applause:
you quoted the wrong person.
No, I didn't. Did you read the quote? The board just messed up.

And you sound like a moron, by the way. I wonder what life would be like if I had nothing to do but troll a message board.

Face it, it comes down to being lazy. Anyone could make more money off of a game than what gamestop gives. This whole thread is depressing with how bad people are being ripped off and then coming here and going "Hey guys check out how bad I just got bent over!!!! Hellz yeah CAGs!!" But it requires just a bit of effort. Which is obviously a ton more than most people are willing to give. Which is what Gamestop depends on.

I'm probably going to come off like a prick but take these discussions elsewhere. Don't like the trade-in values, say your piece and move on. Don't drag it out over numerous pages.

 Do you understand that there is a promo going on? And that most people have EDGE cards? No one is trading the games in for the price they list. It's seriously not that hard to understand, is it? It honestly can't be. If it is, I worry about the world.

That is why I'm only trading in the two copies of L4D2 that I'm buying tomorrow for a total of $45, and getting a total of $95 for it at GS. :D

Say hello to SCC LE in full!

I'm not new at all. How is selling my games on ebay for way more make me look like an idiot?

You know, I must be a glutton for punishment, so I am going to use an example to illustrate what certain people apparently don't understand. Let's take BioShock 2 for the 360. Game just came out a few weeks ago. I'm sure everyone is up in arms about its $25 TIV. Actually, I saw a couple of people on another board complaining about it.

Now, let's assume I don't have an EDGE card, and I just want to trade this in. With the current promo, I'd get $37.50. I can already sense the outrage. "The game just came out! It still sells new for $60! Let's burn down the local GameStop."

Well, I just went over to eBay and checked the completed auctions for "like new" copies of BioShock 2 for the 360. And guess what? We're looking basically in the $40 to $45 range. For argument's sake, I'll give you that I can sell it for $45 and charge for shipping. So, that $45 becomes more like $40 after I pay the eBay and PayPal fees. So, what, I get a whole $2 more? Yep, everyone who trades stuff into GS is just crazy.

trolling? I just asked why you guys continue to get ripped off if this is supposed to be a deal site.

buying a new game for $60 then trading it 3 weeks later for $15 is not smart. You can call me moron till the cows come home but truth you are the moron.
I't not even that, it's whether you want to get your credit right away or deal with potentially getting scammed or a game lost in the mail or someone bitching at you cause your item isnt' mint.
That actually happened to me over the summer. I sold my collection of PS1 games, almost all of them JRPGs, on ebay. A single buyer won 10 or so of my auctions and after receiving them emailed me claiming that my descriptions and photographs were not accurate and that the games were either damaged or didn't meet "mint" or "like new" criteria. The guy was trying to pressure me into giving him a refund (read: I refund his money and he keeps my games) even though I specified no returns accepted in the auction listings. After I told him I hadn't misled him and that I wasn't going to give him a refund he left the most immature negative feedback I've ever seen and killed my DSR ratings.

I found out through ebay's forums that several people have had issues with the buyer in the past and after contacting ebay about the feedback he left me they basically told me that because he didn't use any foul language or threaten me in the feedback they wouldn't edit it or remove it. Basically the buyer is always right. It's unfair how much ebay has taken away seller's rights. Not being able to leave buyers negative feedback for not paying you or only paying you after you open an unpaid item case and waiting until the last day before the case would be closed is total crap. Not being able to offer shipping insurance and the new DSR standards they're putting into practice in a month or so is just as bad. Because of that one buyers feedback my seller account will go from Above Standard status under the old DSR system to Below Standard.

Anyway, after going through the headache with that nightmare of a buyer I haven't sold a single game on ebay since. Amazon.com's trade-in program has been my re-sell method of choice for the most part.

If you buy a game for $60 and didn't plan on owning it forever, you are on the wrong site. Some of you kids need to think before you post.

Base values from 2/26:

Mario Kart SC GBA: $6
Wii Fit (original game only): $2.25

On a side note, when you file your taxes you have to report all sources of income. If you're selling games on eBay you're going to have to keep records of that and include it on your tax return. Omitting that information can be considered fraudulent and can result in fines or small jail time. That combined with eBay fees, Paypal fees, and the whole shipping process makes it level with the ease of GS.

The only title that upsets me a little is DJ Hero. I see people posting $30 for a pretty recent game with a pricey peripheral.

I see your point, but you to remember that its price just keeps dropping, and you can get copies on eBay for very cheap. Also, since around launch, GS has been selling the used game and turntable for just $60.

You know what, you're absolutely right. When I was reading that value I totally spaced the 50% bonus and EDGE card bonus.

I am not one to continue arguments, but you failing to realize that most people on here are not trading in games that are valuable. Sure GS is a rip off most of the time, but right now with this promo you can really come up.

Example: I had two games that I wanted to trade in, Assassin Creed 2 and L4D2. I checked out the TIV for both and I decided to sell AC2 on Ebay and trade in L4D2 to gamestop.

Keep in mind I did not pay for any of these games since I used other promos to get them. Most CAGs in here do not pay full price for games, and remember AC2 and L4D2 have been on sale for $40 new.

I traded in L4D2 and after the bonus I got 48~ from GS. I just sold my AC2 for $44 on Ebay. Now mind you the 8.75% they take out and shipping fees, I will probably make between $38-$40 profit.

The point I am making is to never limit yourself to one thing. If I see I will make more of a profit from GS, I will go there. If Ebay is the better choice I go there. But I will not clown or talk about what others think will profit them the most. That is where you are wrong.
I MADE a THREAD where YOU can PUT what YOUR games UP for SALE before TRADING them INTO gamestop . Someone suggested this earlier because he would pay more than $27 for Uncharted 2 . Plus it is a big up for the people getting rid of DJ Hero for only $30 before promo . Link : http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=253609
There's been many a thread like that created and they never work out. There's also some very similar ones in the trading sub forum right now for different systems. I bet yours gets deleted or moved.

I know I could have sold Heavy Rain for more than 40 but it is the convenience factor. I put it on cl just to see and all I got was trade offers of dmc 4 and controllers, lol.
Hmm, I might trade that one in... Then rebuy the one that also includes the Sega Tennis game.

I'd just like to thank JP for all his hard work and also anyone who contributes TIVs to this thread. Without it, CAGs wouldn't be able to easily make informed decisions about whether Gamestop trade-ins are a viable deal.

Guitar Hero Smash Hits - 9.50
Grid - 4.50
Godfather 2 - 5.00

I never really said GS was awesome... Also, I only paid 35 for L4D2, and 5 for RE5 and Gears 2, so I made some money. And I can do more than just get those three games. I'm actually thinking about getting Mass Effect 2 and another 55 dollar game for the about 75.

Ughh... the last few pages isn't even worth reading. The hell happened to the topic? com on guys get back on track.

OK..since jp or noone has yet to answer me this so I'm gonna say it again.
Is the TIV for an elite 360 bare any different than the TIV for the regular Core + wireless/wired controller? I need to know I'm going to trade in hoping I would get maybe more along with $30HW bonus.

If you have nothing to contribute go post a topic in the deal discussion area and allow member to banter with you there.

Last night -
DS Kingdom Hearts 365/2 $14/$22.40
(if it matters, paid $16)

Bought used Heavy Rain for $35.xx and should I choose to trade it back in, $40....it's all how you buy ....
Taking one part of the equation and assuming someone contributing and posting TIVs is a moron ... well, calling someone a moron without the facts is moronic....

Also (Andrew) I hope your new thread gets some activity... the issue has always been...buyers tend to disregard all the costs associated with a sale (plus time and exposure to something happening during transit) bubble mailer, shipping costs and potential ppal fees...I will most likely be trading in my mint PS3 DJ Hero for $48 as I would be easily at $60, maybe more, to ship it to you...

jp does not work at GS and if no one responded, either it was perceived as obvious or no one knows...
Let's see what makes sense...
Hmmm, I will probably be required to turn in the "basic" components that come with the unit I'm turning in...if I have something extra like a second controller...then I should receive additional trade in value for the extra controller...or headset...or hard drive...

If I had seen your post I would have answered. I just ran a search on the thread for your username and I can only find a single post. You asked it in the old thread on 2/8, which was the only time tit was mentioned by you. Posts do get lost in a thread of this size. I apologize for not seeing it, but that was another thread and 18 days ago.

?

Says 50% trade in bonus for system hardware but does not list a price nor does the tracker...

Also if it asks people not to list bonus trade values i did not see it and of course since this is user entered it can be flawed I know.

Since there didn't seem to be hardware entered i thought i would ask and the other comment was just a general hope

ok found hardware in the 4th post so never mind on that and the rest was a general comment.. Thanks
