Instructions on finding games in the database and inputting the values from different sections can be found in my blog post here: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php?b=14143. I would put the entire post in the thread but this is already kind of a large post.

FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value:
$0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases paid in full with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming
No Information Yet: Connecticut, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, West Virginia

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has DS/PSP/GBA values.

Do defective hardware (ones that power on, but do not play games; i.e., RROD Xbox 360) still receive a hardware bonus when traded-in, or does the hardware bonus only apply to fully functional units? Does the hardware bonus itself get cut in half because the defective hardware base TIV gets cut in half, or what?

From what I've experienced and been told is that defective hardware does actually get the hardware bonus. Only the base value gets cut in half. Now, the promo information normally says trades must be in full working order but I have personally seen a system traded in defective and still get the promo automatically input. Even local employees mention it when these promos come around. There is no guarantee that this promotion will act the same way.

I'd say they won't even take it if it's red ringed.

Thanks, jp--always a big help.
That would be awesome. You're saying I could get $45 base + $50 bonus = $95 for a RROD unit? That's around how much I paid for that crappy, used unit, so it kinda be like I never bought it (minus the stress).

So are you saying, when they ring up the unit, the $50 bonus will automatically apply in the system; it's not a manual input (so I'd have less to fear when trading in)?

Lastly, I have 4 GameStops I can go to. If one doesn't take the RROD system, I can just try the other 3 GameStops, right?
And if you say the $50 hardware bonus is a manual input, I could keep trying the other GameStops until someone offers it, right? (Disregard this message if the hardware bonus is automatic in the system.)

o_O; No wonder everyone's always so skeptical about buying used systems (particularly 360s) from Gamestop.

So how long until someone comes back angry to post that stupid employees at Gamestop sold him a 40GB PS3 instead of a 60GB? :p

The straight hardware bonus promo, no system purchase required, was automatic last time. They might tell you it wont work with a defective system, but have them try anyway just to see what it does. They can refuse any trade for any reason but you can definitely try another Gamestop if one declines you.
o_O; No wonder everyone's always so skeptical about buying used systems (particularly 360s) from Gamestop.
Used 360s in general are a bad idea because even if it's sound hardware wise it could be banned from live or any number of things. Used 360s are just a bad idea from anywhere, not just GameStop. Consoles tagged as defective are most definitely sent out to get fixed or they get tossed if they can't be fixed. GameStop has it's own refurb shop somewhere in Texas if I remember correctly.

i just talked to one of my buddies who works at GS and he said they no longer take RROD systems. i'm gonna ask another mgr later when i go trade in some stuff.

mine just died yesterday :(

Stupid question...
For the Save $25 on any new game $29.99 or higher when trading select titles,is that for one game on that list?

Only problem is, if that 60gb gets the YLOD, Sony wants $175 to fix it when it's out of warranty.

But you got extremely lucky on that. I'm jealous actually since I wanted a 60gb model, but I didn't wanna pay $600 for it.

ok... so im back from my trade in adventures today. Here's the score-
-Burnout Paradise - $6
-Skate 2 - $6
-Godfather 2 - $6
-Brutal Legend - $4
(must have dropped recently as it was $8.75...better off bringing to TRU for $8.65. oh n don't bring LotR Conquest to TRU as it dropped from $9-$4.50)
-Need for Speed Carbon - $9
(I should have gotten alot more of these instead of 9 Brutal Legends, doh! Hindsight is 20/20 tho)
-Battlefield Bad Company - $5 (tru has $9 for this and Dead Space, alot better than GS)

It's too bad TRU doesn't give cash money for games you trade in(supposedly Blockbuster has a cash trade option in their system but its inactive)or I'd go there with a few of these games.

I can't believe that NFS: Carbon gets $9 @ Gamestop though. I may go in and see what kind of credit my total comes out to with that 30% bonus coupon that's floating around.:D;)

TIV's
360 Need for Speed: Most Wanted - $7 (good money maker)
360 COD WaW - $5
360 GTA IV - $5.25
360 Saints Row 2 - $5
360 TMNT - $5
360 COD MW - $5.25
360 RE5 - $5

ffs jackie..

they take them as a different sku and send them off to get repaired. they don't file them in with working 360's and you take a shot in the dark whenever you want to buy one.

Not only that, but if you bought a dud system, you could turn right around and exchange it. It's not like you go there, buy the crap system, and then they laugh at you when you come back. Well, some GS stores might do that...
ffs jackie..

I'm not an idiot... XD I know they don't just put it on the shelf immediately after buying it. Of course they have to send it somewhere to get fixed. If I were considering buying a 360 myself, though, I would much prefer getting a used 360 with Microsoft's warranty still on it over a system repaired by Gamestop without the warranty. And while it's not necessarily a shot in the dark, I doubt I'd be able to check myself until after I bought the console. It would just be more of a hassle than its worth if something went wrong.

But like jp said, that's the problem with used 360s period. It's not really a Gamestop thing.

Also, I hate to double post, but regarding Gamestop's pre-orders...

If I use Gamestop credit to pre-order games, does it "set the credit aside" for them? I know they don't bill you normally until the game ships, but it would be to my disadvantage for them not to take my credit now. I know I'd spend it on something else before my games could ship, and since I'm using promotions like 25OFF, I'd be losing money. >_>;

Not 100% sure on this, but I do a remember a thread from awhile back. I think the person pre-ordered a game online, ended up using the credit in-store (believe he forgot about the pre-order), and they ended up canceling the pre-order. Like I said, not 100% sure on this, though. Hopefully someone else will have the definitive answer.

They'll cancel the preorders if the credit isn't there when they'd try to ship it.

I just talked to a gamestop employee about that today. Remember that he may have no idea what he is talking about. I told him that I ordered 2 $40 games on seperate orders with $10 off codes on each one. So 2 orders of $32.5. I prepaid both of them(blazblu cs and 3d dotgame heroes) with a $60 giftcard I had to get when they botched a return and weren't able to put the credit on my edge card. I told him that after the first one ships there won't be enough credit to send the 2nd game and that I didn't want to lose my $10 off code. He said they would contact me and give me a chance to change/add payment. idk tho. if it doesn't let me add my edge card, I guess I can put $1 into the giftcard if they let you do that, but argh!

They are not supposed to take RROD 360's right now. Doesn't mean they won't, only that they are not supposed to. They will again in the future, I've been told. The hardware bonuses typically say they only apply to functional systems. The pos will automatically apply the promo automatically even if it is defective. You will get the bonus on a defective system unless they manually take it away which they should but usually don't do.

Well that fucking sucks. I hoped that wasn't the case. :/ Now I have to keep track of my credit to make sure I have enough to get the games I've already pre-ordered. And it doesn't look like I can change my payment option from the ordering page, either.

But if they want to give me 25% off the first couple of games I've pre-ordered even after I won't qualify for the $100, I'm not going to try and stop them. :p

Let's say I'm at the register, a GS employee allowed my console to be traded-in, and the GS employee is now ringing up my RROD 360 total. If he manually takes out the hardware bonus, could I cancel my transaction then and there? It might piss them off, wouldn't it?
So, should I ask them ahead of time? And when--call the GS beforehand or ask an employee when I get to the GS in person?
