Halo 3 - General Discussion & Info
They're comparing it to movies because:

Its remarkable that any game would gross more than a movie on its opening day, let alone the highest grossing movie. Movies in particular are known for their huge revenues.

It gives legitimacy to the game industry to compare it to a more established medium.

It also provides a sense of scale, since this has far and away blown out of the water any other game's opening day.
It's still exceptionally hard to compare, due to ticket prices vs game prices being in such different realms of 'affordability.' You also generally don't have people buying the game multiple times.

It's also interesting to look out how profits work for those who are delivering the product: stores get almost no profit from all these sales, whereas movie theaters get a shitton of profits from the reason films are made these days: concessions.

I agree, it's a weird system, but another way to think of it is the huge markup on all the non-media stuff (BB for example marks up Ethernet cables like $15-$30). It's the same thing in theaters in a sense with the popcorn and whatnot.

They're definitely too different right now to compare, but the success of games like Halo will eventually cause a shift in film production practices.

fuck. I'm stuck on Level 6. I'm at the part where
you have to destroy the wraith ( which is on the right ) and there are brutes and elites to the left. Everyone in my team is dead. I have limited ammo and I have no idea what to do.
I'm playing on heroic. Any tips?

Also, I can't get behind the wrait because it's always following me as I strafe / sidestep. At this points the brutes notice me and brute shot rape me.

Ok, I need help with the Theater thing, or someone just to tell me that I can't do what I want.

I've got a campaign film loaded up in the theater.

I want to:
A) Fast Foward really quickly to get to the near end of a 30 minute film
B) Be able to rewind a bit if I over shoot from A.
C) Be able to record a video rather than just take screen shots.

I've seen that I'm able to do none of that so far. I can only fast forward via the right trigger which moves fairly fast but still is a giant pain. I can't rewind at all (LinkinPrime's suggestions of using the dpad left to backup a bit doesn't work--only buzzes at me for right and left), and the recrod video button is greyed out and does the same buzzer to me as the dpad does.

Can you not quickly fast forward, rewind at all, or save clips of a campaign level?

Has anyone noticed anything else unusual... for instance here are some monkey people from the first level... you don't get anything for finding them, but they are there....

Press start once the film starts and it will show you all your uptions. RL is to speed the film up, hold it slightly or tap it and it will be really slow. Left on the d-pad to reverse a few seconds sometimes lags, wait a bit.

From what I'm reading elsewhere, you can't rewind the campaign films at all.

Wow. Can't even get passed level six.
Now I'm at the part near the end where you're told to go downstairs to the room full of the brutes/ elites and the gravity hammer guy. Just so happens, I don't have alot of ammo.

Damn it, they said they would come. If you're going to say " we'll be right there" make it a " just hold out in the battle and then you'll actually get support thing", not a " kill all these brutes and elites you bitch and like it, then you'll get support ( aka cutscene )" thing. I HATE brutes and elites. "Anyone with any past Halo experience should play Heroic" my ass.

Oh that sucks if its true...no I've only tried MP.

Yeah, I played on normal and kinda felt like it was on par with normal from Halo 1 and 2. If you're used to playing a ton of 360 FPS games, of course it's gonna seem easier than when you played those games originally, but I really think the difficulty for normal is the same for those of us who don't play a whole ton.
Halo 2 Spoilers:
The very opening where you see the two lights in the sky is the ship the Chief was on at the end of 2 and him exiting and it crashes.

The rest will become clear throughout the game, just remember that only the Elites left the Covenant because the Prophets replaced the Elites with Brutes for the honor guard. That, and in Halo 2 the Arbiter learned the true prupose of the Halos.
Why is the ship falling to Earth? Does he crash the ship into other Covenent ships in Earth orbit?

I'm a little sketchy on that. It may not have crashed, persey, he might have just bailed before it got to where it was going.

Yeah, you can't. It's definitely a bug.

Damn, somebody needs to find that IWHBYD skull, I want that Hayabusa helmet! I already have the armor and shoulder pads for it.
Yeah, you can't. It's definitely a bug.
It's definately not a bug if you read Bungie's site. You can't rewind campaign films because of checkpoints and whatnot, it fucks it up.

That doesn't mean it's not a bug. It just means it's a known bug with no known fix yet.

If I manage to catch the cable guy to install my fucking Internet today and Halo 3 sits in my mailbox once I get home from class, is there anyone that's willing to play Legendary mode with me for a couple of hours?

Yeah I saw them in a video showing the skull locations.

Damn, I just saw that the Famine Skull is going to be a bitch to get. The level starts with hunters. I hate haveing to kill hunters in this game. The others it was not hard at all but this one is just a pain. Looks like I'm going to skip that one for now. Cant even get help on live now because I no longer have gold.

So I'm about to rent this game, so I can make up my own damn mind about it. I don't have online, but I plan to play through it both in single-player and 2 player co-op. So what difficulty level would one recommend for those scenarios? I'm thinking heroic for single-player and legendary for co-op, or would that be too difficult? I like hardcore in Gears of War SP and Insane for co-op, so something along those lines would be good. So where should I start?

That sounds about right...if you like a challenge from the beginning go Heroic, Legendary is doable but pretty hard and takes time by yourself.

Well it seems that we're closer to finding it than ever:

Here is what we know so far:
 • The Skull is on the level, “The Covenant”
 • The Skull is the most difficult in the game to find
 • According to ferrex (from Bungie), the Skull is found in ways that we have yet to imagine
 • Hint included in the Game Code suggests: “Interred at the Foundry’s edge.” This indicates that the Skull is somewhere near the end of the level, most likely in the area with the Halo Ring Holograms and the Prophet of Truth. (Added 9/28/07 @ 10:47)
 • Unconfirmed Reports of one of the Bungie Team communicating with people on Bungie.net, and from a picture of some new Game Code Suggests that the Skull is activated rather than found by jumping through the rings in a certain order. (Added 9/28/07 @ 10:47)
 • The Halo Rings in the last part of the level each produce a specific note. All of the notes combined make up the same notes played in the Halo Theme Song. The Notes in order from First (Entrance) Ring to last are: B C# D E F# G A. (Added 9/28/07 @ 10:47)
 • Ethan confirmed that the “Skull of all Skulls” or the “Grand Daddy Skull” is mentioned in the Bungie Podcast. Marty Knows about the Skull’s location, and they basically confirm that you need to play a melody with the musical hologram rings.

I don't know nothing about music notes so I would have no clue where to start.

Okay, well, since I don't wanna sift through pages and pages of stuff, I'll just ask here real quick: Is the legendary edition of halo 3 REALLY that hard to find at all? (I haven't gotten to a store yet as I'm really busy) How many of those did they make? I haven't gotten to keep up with the halo 3 news as I'd like :(

I'm sure that there's plenty extras out there...just keep looking or try eBay, its overflooded with them right now. Not sure on the actual number that they made but mine was number 5Million something...
It's been found. Somebody has 1000/1000 points. Wait, is this an achievement skull?
Nope, just one of the silver skulls. All of the gold ones are for achievements.

I was at a best buy 2 days ago and that still had 3 sitting there. The one I was at today didn't have them that I could see, but they are a smaller one and had nothing set up from what I could tell for Halo. The one I was at a few days ago had a set up with the guide and all three types of Halo 3 and the Halo 360.

Looks like the IWHBYD skull is found.
Skull Effect: Unlocks hidden dialogue throughout Halo 3’s campaign.

Skull Location:

The IWHBYD Skull has been found! After countless hours from the Halo3Planet Community, we finally present you with the location of the final skull, the IWHBYD Skull!

The Skull is located in the level, “The Covenant”. After defeating the Scarabs, and going inside, get to the location with all 7 Ring Holograms. You must jump through the rings in a specific order. That order is as follows:

4 5 6 5 7 6 5 4 1 2 3 2 7 2 1 3 4 6 7 5 4 6 5 4 5 3 4

These rings also produce the notes:

E F# G F# A G F# E B C# D C# A C# B D E G A F# E G F# E F# D E

After jumping through them in this sequence, you will be awarded the “I Would Have Been Your Daddy Skull”. It will be right next to the bridge that brings you over to the Prophet of Truth.

Wonder what song that plays and if someone randomly figured it out or if a Bungie employee leaked it.

has anyone else found the dud skull on the cortana mission too it's just there and doesn't unlock anything
also I've tried getting the catch skull many times every time I get up there it's not there any tips

I am having a lot of problems with my game. It has a choppy framerate on all the movies. Even the intro ones like the Microsoft logo at the beginning.
Zewone, Trakan, and Myself got the Hidden Skull!
So you guys were the original people who found it first? How did you guys figure out what notes to play and what song does it play?
I still don't like the series in terms of story mainly... the story does not deserve much credit. as for multiplayer... thats the good part.
Why do you have to mention your opinion on the Halo series - at least - once a page? Is it to save face for "selling out" and buying it?

Just stop.

Oh, and for the record, most of the games you indulge in, and enjoy, are equally as shallow -- if not shallower. So one can only assume that you're scrounging for something to hate, to enhance your artist level.

Just. Stop.

And another one for the record: The Halo series has a lot of good story telling mechanics, and really well done cinematography -- especially for a video game.

Furthermore, the Halo series is, and always has been, a bit of a bare bones - for the lack of a better term - "hero" tale, akin to Greek mythology, and other ancient mythos. While ancient mythology can be regarded as one-dimensional, it really doesn't make you that cool to sit there, with your arms folded, referring to it as "shallow", under your breath.

Halo excels in its creative intent. It shouldn't be bashed for being what it was intended to be. Just say it's not your cup of tea, and stop straight-up bashing it at any given chance.

You're impressing no one, other than yourself.
So you guys were the original people who found it first? How did you guys figure out what notes to play and what song does it play?
Ah no. We were messing around at that part once it became known what you had to do. We did it and it worked. Pretty Hott looking helmet.
Ugh me and my friend just went through the whole thing and nothing...fuck

Are we suppose to do it before or after we talk to the prophet?
After.

Looks like the Legendary version is selling for a loss or near MSRP on Ebay. Are these things that plentiful in the wild or is it just to expensive? I've only been to Walmart since launch day and they didn't even seem to have any even at release...

I found a Legendary at a local store tonight and ALMOST bought it. I actually was going to get a employee to unlock the case but balked on the way. How hard are these things to find? After seeing all these pics everywhere I really want one but had already did the BB.com points deal and didn't wanna wait in line to get one so I stuck with the preordered CE. Now i'm considering selling my CE and just letting the $15 saved on the points cover the lost $ on it... Would make a nice lil thank you gift to myself for working all this darn weekend overtime lately. :D

Well, I beat level 6. I think I'm at the end of level 7, and you all know what my new fav part is?
lawlz. Defeat 2 scarabz.

The funny part is that I could defeat this part in 2-3 minutes if I had a co op partner.
There are two, uh...hornets, I think, there. One is so my idiot team can dick around with it. The other ( mine ) is used so I can actually go inside.
I've tried it a thousand times. I clear out the guys, land, kill it, but the ship blows up with it. Either that or as I'm turning it over the other one blows it up/ kills it. Ripoff.

* tried to be as vague as I can on the un-spoiler tag parts.

Enjoy it while you can. The next level is the worst level in Halo history and almost ruined the game for me.

I feel ya I'm 0.77. Although in the social playlist where I have only played big team battle I'm 1.17. Looks like I am going to be better with vehicles than on foot in this version as well
