Halo: Reach

[RANT]
I now remember why I don't play Halo games online anymore. They just aren't fun and the community is overrun by immaturity.

I am playing Invasion Slayer (don't know why this is even an option) and I grab the warthog and proceed to go pickup a teammate when he runs out in the direction I am moving and gets team killed; next thing i know i am booted (the only team kill I had). Survival of the fittest (i.e. if you are stupid to run out in front of a vehicle, you deserve what is coming). God I hate this game series online.
[/RANT]

On another note...
Would you guys recommend Reach to people who don't play on Xbox LIVE? In other words, do you think the Campaign is good enough alone?
I would definitely check it out for just single player. Like dmaul stated, you might just rent it as I was able to complete it with a buddy on Legendary in around 10-12 hours of game time.

As for the other discussion, I think Herioc shouldn't be too bad to do alone. Legendary, on the other hand, I fear for a couple of parts.
Don't look unless you A) don't care about spoilers and B) you have finished the campaign.
1. the End of the city level (there is a firefight map for this scene). The wraiths + eltes up in the city area was a pain with two people; can't imagine doing it alone.
2. Defending Haley's area. Too much going on; not sure if there is really a safe area.
3. The hardest part - The last level in two spots:
A. Outside when the dropships letting everyone out. With the two of us, we had one sit back (from where you started the area) while the other took out what they could. Without this buffer, not sure how doable this will be by myself.
B. The area on the way up to the AA Gun.
For those parts, I don't know if I will attempt to do Legendary campaign alone.

I believe you could still do Firefight offline as well, which is fun with all the new options.

Which chapters are those parts in? I'm going through the Legendary solo now, and completed 6/9 chapters (having never done a regular playthrough). Pretty sure I completed #1, and I'm just curious as to when I can expect #2. Thus far, the most annoying part for me was
Space Mission - dropping into the room upon first landing on the convenent ship. The room was swarming with elites and the soldiers died instantly.
There is an easy way.... no very prideful, but it works. Not sure about getting there, especially leading up to it.

MEGA SPOILER - CONTAINING END GAME DISCUSSION - DON'T CLICK
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
If you are dying a lot and stuck it what seems like a bad checkpoint:

Claer out the Zealots if you can (if you can avoid them draining your life that works too) and hide behind the rail on the stairwell behind the Mac Cannon. Wait for Keys to tell you to take the shot and they run up and BLAM!

That's exactly what I did. Good stuff.
Would you guys recommend Reach to people who don't play on Xbox LIVE? The campaign is about 8-10 hours, so if you're a huge Halo fan and you tend to get a lot of replay out of single-player campaigns, then yes...it's one of the best.
The Halo 1 pistol was by far the best in the series. Halo 2's was great when dual-wielding before it was patched. ODST's could have been better than Halo 3's I guess, but would have been complete crap in multiplayer.

Yeah, you could cover all of Blood Gulch with the pistol. That gun was beastly.
Rest in peace, M6D pistol. Best all around weapon in the series by far.

dear god, is anybody having insane lag in firefight matchmaking? almost every game I join is laggy as hell, multiplayer is fine though. anybody else have this problem?
Yeah, they really need a Slayer only playlist with the various slayer modes. Make rumble pit all the other free for all modes.
This. I have wished for a free for all Slayer only playlist for a long time. I hate Infection, I hate Oddball, I hate King of the Hill. Headhunter is fun but rarely comes up for me in Rumble Pit.

I need help with the mission
The Pillar of Autumn

im at the part where im riding on the mongoose
the AI is doing all the driving and we ride past all the enemies,
then we reach the part where you have to jump the bridge, but the AI
just keeps killing us by not making it across.
i restart right before the bridge still riding the mongoose and
try to jump off the mongoose but the AI won't let me drive or will just kill himself

Stay on the mongoose and just let him drive. He should clear the jump automatically. At least he did for me anyways.

On another note for the very of the last mission,
kind of funny how I didn't get to do the last stand part. I fired off the shot to destroy the corvette, but I think I died right as I fired it. Go figure.

Silly me. Apparently that's AFTER the credits roll.

You know, something Halo: Reach succeeds at is really bringing the Halo games full circle. Popped in Halo 1 and fell in love all over again. It really makes Halo 1 feel "right" again. I never got that much thrill out of playing the opening sequence of Halo 1 as I did having just finished Reach and then playing it. The way it's scaled really makes Master Chief feel "special."

I don't know if any of that makes sense...need sleep.

I have no idea how all you guys are brushing off a heroic playthrough like it ain't no thang. I got stuck at so many checkpoints for what seemed like forever that I nearly lost my mind by the end of the campaign. Finally finishing the campaign was more of a relief than it was rewarding. I suppose it's my fault though as I've only played Halo1 (LONG time ago), never played Halo2, only did a Normal run on Halo3 and did Normal&Heroic runs on ODST (although Heroic there wasn't NEARLY as hard as it is in Reach). Still, it's super depressing to see everybody say how easily they breezed through Heroic where I had such difficulty.

About MP...it's tons of fun...but this is really my first time going online as I was too intimidated before (and also late to the party). I thought going online during the first week of the game wouldn't be too bad, and it hadn't been the first few days, but today was pretty bad. I only got to play for a couple hours, but I got thoroughly rocked. I even had the selected the option to look for similarly skilled players and that didn't work too well. I'm not sure if I was just up against really good players, or if I'm just that awful, but I ended my session today pretty bummed. Sure didn't help that some douche just came up and melee'd my dead body, or that there was at least one quitter per match, or that in the first second of an Elite Slayers match one of my teammates stuck me. Booted his ass, that's for sure. I was cranky enough without that happening.

Ah well, shit happens I suppose. Just gotta try again tomorrow I suppose. Get more practice.

Yeah man I feel you. This is my first time playing halo after only playing odst. I sucked at first but with practice it became much easier and fun. There are a lot of jerks playing multiplayer, but you just gotta ignore them and let yourself have some fun. Tomorrow's another day for sure. Good luck.

You just got to have thick skin. Either jump in with some friends or do like you did and stop playing for the day. The good times more than make up for the idiots, betrayers, etc imo.

On another note, I tried playing Firefight Matchmaking and every match it seems at least one person will quit... Don't really understand why. One match of Rocket Firefight, my entire team quit at the beginning. lol

Rocked some firefight tonight and got the furthest I've ever gotten. I beat three rounds and scored 30000 points with two of my buddies. It stopped there. Is there an option to go further?

Don't take it too personally, no one is amazing at these games online the first time they play. Hell I've played a lot of them in the past and I still count a good day as when I have a 1/1 kill/death ratio. Remember you can always play the maps solo in custom games to get a feel of how the maps are laid out and where the weapons are.

Personally I'm loving the abilities, especially the Hologram one. There's just nothing like fooling people into running after your hologram and then taking them down. I'm amazed at the variety really within the types of games like Invasion Slayer, racing, pro vs classic, etc. Considering what people where able to do with the previous Forge system I can't wait to see what people create now.

I just spent two hours playing the last level on heroic. I was getting quite aggravated with cheap deaths. It almost made me start to hate the game. I should have done it on normal first then skipped right to legendary.

Oh well. Weekly challenge complete. Now to get allthe daily challenges in one day.

and I want to do Rumble Pit but dont want to play Slayer. They should take Rumble Pit and make it Rumble Pit Slayer, Rumble Pit Objective, and Infection. Team Slayer should be Team Slayer, Team Snipers, Team Swat, and eventually MLG/Hardcore. On Big Team the Scorpion should be turned into the Wraith and Swat should be removed (Big Team Swat on Hemorrage? Really?).

I also think Invasion Slayer should find its way into to Team Slayer and Big Team.

I can't seem to download my free r/c falcon from Halo Waypoint. The download is always pending but never works. Waypoint says you are eligible for it if you have the Limited Edition of Reach, which is what I have. Anyone else having trouble with that?

I do miss the silenced SMG from ODST.

Way too much division of the pool of players you have going on there.

Speaking of, I wonder why they went back to the 'Rumble Pit' moniker over 'Lone Wolves.'

Most people playing on Heroic know there are going to be a few checkpoints that are sticky/tough. Once you accept that, it makes it a bit easier. Most of my pull my hair out moments came later when I felt like I was never going to get past some hunters, or had no ammo.

BTW, to everyone complaining about SWAT, I feel ya'. It seems like every time SWAT is up for a vote it gets 12 votes. I don't mind swat, but it takes away some of the variety (weapons, armor abilities) of Halo when you play it.

It is meant to give you a challenge. To me, it is really like Normal mode. When you complete it on Legendary and go back on Herioc, you will feel that same way.

The achievement where you have to break a killing fall by assassinating an Elite is really annoying. I've seen the videos, and I realize you need to stop your sprint, but I still can't get it. I've gotten the assassination animation a few times, but I guess the game thought I was still sprinting. The other times I just can't get the jump right or time holding the RB correctly.

EDIT: Unlocked it finally. I don't know if it actually was the difference, or I finally got lucky, but I switched to the Recon control scheme (B to melee), and I got it after like three tries.

i got it fairly quickly on my profile. i got it to do the animation over 20 times without getting the achievement on another profile. i figure it has to do with deactivating the sprint early enough, but im not sure.

Yeah, they just need more playlists period. Or even the option to do match making for individual game types. I wouldn't mind longer waits if I could just play the game types I like.

But yeah, as you note, Rumble Pit kind of stinks. Infection is the only mode I really dig. Slayer is fine at times--especially the Swat version as my main dislike with Halo is how many fucking bullets it takes to kill someone with most weapons, Swat feels more like Call of Duty--but I'm not often in the mood for it.

And most of the things like Oddball, Headhunter etc. kind of suck in free for all as it's just too hectic. Those are much more fun in the Team Objective mode--at least as long as you have a team of CAGs or friends rather than randoms--when you have people guarding the ball carrier, people with a lot of skulls etc.

I think it is kind of glitch in that way. It pop'd for me on the second time I did the animation. I did it the exact same way both times so I am not sure what made the difference.

What glitches for me, I think, is the tank achievement. Can it not get damaged at all? Can you take it inside the base? Mine was damaged, but most certainly intact and sitting outside the base. But no achievement.

I just played on the aliens spaceship map and damn that was intense...only 1 guy of 8 had less than 20 kills. By far the best jetpack map.

Yeah, there is definitely something very glitchy about it. People keep pointing to the sprinting, but a couple of times, I definitely knocked the sprinting off way before I hit the ground, I got the assassination animation, and no achievements.

Weird. My tank was on fire, and I got the achievement as soon as I hit the outside of the bunker.

well the sprint has to be off while youre high enough so the game registers you in a free fall state at a height enough to kill you.

but yeah its glitched, i got the animation a solid 20 times without the achievement activating.

I gave up on getting the achievement. I was able to stop the sprint from what seemed like it was high enough but when I landed never got the assassination. I don't know if my timing was always off or what.

Just finished #2. Didn't find it nearly as hard as some other parts in the game. Sure, I died a few times, but it never felt like I hit a wall, and had to perform a precise set of actions in order to get to the next checkpoint.

Going to work my way through the last mission today. Really wish they'd stop giving me the assault rifle. I can never find a use for it. If I'm close enough for it to be effective, I'm close enough for the half-dozen covenant I'm attacking to kill me in seconds.

I'll give it another go. The game glitches me at that gate the on the second level. It wouldn't open even after hitting the button 3 times then opened the fourth time. I'm still loving this game, but it's been buggy the whole way through. Got a few campaign Achievements to clean up, this it's multiplayer time. I've played a few matches already, but now it'll be ON.

Finished campaign yesterday, took some time to soak it all up, now it's time for some questions.
Why did the covenant attack Reach in the first place? Why was Reach so much more important than the other human colonies that were previously glassed?

What happened to Jun? I read somewhere (can't remember where) that there was going to be a campaign DLC explaining Juns demise, or, I guess it's possible he could end up being Master Chief. We already know Chief got new armor and got taller and whatnot after Reach. I guess it's possible. Not probable, but possible.

What happened to the previous "Noble Six," and why, as commander says, would the rest of Noble Team rather "leave those shoes unfilled"?

What exactly is a spire and why must we destroy it? It didn't appear to be doing any damage to anything.

What didn't the UNSC want Carter to see in Noble Sixes file?
That should be enough... for now.

Questions answered:
Why did the covenant attack Reach in the first place? Why was Reach so much more important than the other human colonies that were previously glassed?
The humans and the Covenant have been a war for a while now. This is covered in the book Halo: Fall of Reach. (Which also give John-117 origin story, and tells the story of Halo: Reach). No reason is really given, but the Covenant attack the human planet Harvest. The kill the entire population (whic was mostly farmers.) One would assume that the Covenant want to dominate the humans and encourage them to join them. (The Covenant is a religion of sorts.) Reach was a training/development ground for the Spartans as well as a human colony. It is also the last large military stronghold between the Covenant and Earth,.

Jun and Dr Halsey are assumed MIA/KIA. IIRC, in the books Halsey is alive later. Jun is not John-117. There is an easter egg to explain where John-117 is.
What happened to the previous "Noble Six," and why, as commander says, would the rest of Noble Team rather "leave those shoes unfilled"?

If you watch the "Deliver Hope" short/trailer, that shows the fate of Thom (the original Noble Six). These teams are often close and have been together for many missions (and perhaps since becoming Spartans), so it's like losing a family member.

What exactly is a spire and why must we destroy it? It didn't appear to be doing any damage to anything.

The spire was a transport the Covenant were using to transport troops onto planet Reach.

What didn't the UNSC want Carter to see in Noble Sixes file?

Obviously he was a lone wolf before. He probably did lots of political assassinations/dirty work. Also, some Spartans had been used on Reach to quell the local human rebel groups. Noble Six might have done ops there.

Hope those answers were:
1. Correct
2. Helpful

\

Has anyone tried using a jetpack to get the "assassinate an elite to prevent your death" achievement? I'd imagine you could try in Tip of The Spear (Mission 5) when Noble Six and Jorge start at a checkpoint next to the jetpack?

Also, I watched the Legendary Commentary last night. The commentary was pretty good, but I don't like it being streamed from Halo Waypoint. (What if I want to get it later, or watch it offline?) I'm not surprised someone hasn't ripped it and put it out on the net yet.

Ugh..amazon's TIV just dropped from $39.25 to $15. I'm not even sure I want to open my copy coming in the mail tomorrow then since I was just going to hit the trade in button when I got it, play the campaign, and send it in.

Anyone think it'll go back up? I remember this happened with Other M a couple weeks ago too.

I just looked up a couple people from this thread and theirs were updated.

It's slow to update. Mine has my custom character that I made, like I said in a previous post, but it doesn't have the addition I put on my helmet this morning.
