4 free HD-dvds is a pretty good deal IMO. The B2/B3 thing is rather weak since they're one of the more expensive retailers (next to FYE/Suncoast & Circuit City). Though i guess if you got music ones (which seem to be around $20~ its an okay deal.

As for the NiN HD-dvd. Buy.com has it right now for $9.88 shipped after GCO (if you use the "GCO Pre-order" link).
Because combo disks are a great idea.
Combo discs along with Studio support are going to kill HD-DVD. Combo discs are solely for the folks who are on the fence, while they leave people who adopted early out in the cold. I understand that some people don't have HD in each room or whatever but if they want to cater to that crowd by releasing a combo disc, then they should cater to the HD supporters and release a non-combo disc as well.

But frankly, I don't understand the combo supporters at all. If the HD-only retails for an average $20 (Constantine as an example) and the standard new release is in the $15-range, no one is saving any money by coupling them both for $35. In fact, they are driving the HD-only people away.

The Departed is a great example, I stopped paying $30+ for movies when LaserDiscs finally died and I'll never do it again. I want The Departed in HD but I have zero use for it as a combo disc. So as a consumer, do I waste $20 to see it in HD when I have no need for the dvd version even though the only way to see it in HD is to spend $30 for the combo? Or do I spend $14 and just pick it up on dvd and save myself $20. The answer is clear to everyone, as shown by the numbers of HD-DVD dropping market-share across the board.

Now, if they had released just an HD version, even at $5 or $10 more than the title's sale price of course I would jump at it, but paying triple in some cases as compared to the sale price of the normal dvd is crazy. Yes, I realize that I missed on the BB price mistake, but that's what it was a price mistake and average Joe consumer has no clue where to look for that kind of information like we do. And yes, I realize that Amazon has it for $28, but still when most HD-DVD hover around the $20 mark without the combo, I'm being made to pay $8 for something I can't use.

I am early HD-DVD adopter, I have yet to buy more than my initial 2 titles because all of the AAA releases are fucking combo discs. While some may that $15-20 isn't that much for the quality bump, it is when you purchase at least a dozen movies a month.

Blu-Ray Discs are priced 29.99-34.99, more than double (i dont know where you get triple) the price of new release dvds and just a couple dollars less than a combo disc. Are you saying you'd pay that for a single Blu-Ray disc you cant use anywhere else but in your single $1,000 Blu Ray player simply because you arent paying for something you dont think you could use?

I tell you, i thought the same thing about these combo discs when i first saw them, but them i found myself actually using the DVD side of the disc for various reasons. While i wont pay 34.99 for the disc (i bought Departed at the low price and Superman Returns with GCO), i still think its a great idea. Its just the price that is faulty.

A lot of non-combo discs are $19.99, actually. Combo discs are indeed overpriced, even if you can get around it somewhat by ordering them online. They cost a mint in retail stores!

It is simple. I added wrong, they are not triple they are double.
Non combo disk new releases are around the $30 range, so I don't get your logic rabidmonkeys.
Most non-combo new releases are $20 not $30.

The point is that the departed was 14.99 on new release tuesday, but the hd version was $34.99. All I'm saying is that if they are going to offer the Combo disc, they need to offer a non-combo version too.
Serenitty shows $26 hardly a good deal
Looks like the price went back up; it and jarhead used to be $7.50 after GCO. I bought Serenity and don't even have an HD-DVD player, thats how good the price was ;)

The only HD-DVDs around $19.99 that I see are the older ones. Most of the newer ones are $24.99 and up. Blu-Rays are $24.99 on the low end with the average, from what I've seen, being $29.99. I am not a big fan of combo discs, but they do have their uses. My 17 year old daughter can play R rated movies in her room on her time without having to worry about her younger brother and sister being around. HD is nice for her, but not that big of a deal. I can also loan the disc to my brother and sister who do not have HD players or in my brothers case, an HDTV. Still, it would be nice to have the option.
So, is anyone going to take advantage of the Best Buy deal next week?
What would that be? I checked speedy's thread and nothing stood out.

Save $10 when buying any 2 HD DVDs or save $20 buying any 3 HD DVDs. I'm not impressed, tho. Seems like they raised the prices $5 for the sale.

they didn't raise the prices, they're just always rediculously high. even with the "deal" they're still more expensive than amazon if you're willing to wait a day or two for free shipping on orders over $25

i've yet to see an hd-dvd under $25 at best buy. 3/4 of what i want from amazon is $20. $25 + $25 - $10 + tax is still more than the $40 i'd spend on amazon. i guess its good for the people that don't order online, or who aren't patient enough to wait for shipping though.
I'm going to be one depressed mother fucker when I can't do the GCO promotion anymore
are they ending it?

Wow, I just ordered Babel for that price too. Everyone needs to get in on this... Shame the HD DVD isn't quite so cheap.
So, is anyone going to take advantage of the Best Buy deal next week?
I might pick up a couple HD-DVD's if they are priced $19.99

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but can this topic be split in two, so HD-DVD & Blu-ray each have their own?
I don't know if this has been brought up before, but can this topic be split in two, so HD-DVD & Blu-ray each have their own?
No ;)

I think they go hand-in-hand currently.

As for the Best Buy deal...I wonder if I buy 1 HD-DVD and 1 Blu-Ray they would apply the discount. I have $25 in RZ coupons, so it would be almost buy one get 1 free

I agree with doubledown. As much as I would like to see what gets more traffic ;) I think that both formats are not that big to deserve their own thread.

According to the BB ad, I am under the impression that you can mix and match formats. But then I'm also under the impression that you get a free 300 movie ticket for buying any DVD, I'm curious how they're going to explain that.
Gameznflix has babel on Blu-Ray for $0.00 with $5 shipping. I ordered it and got my copy in today.

http://www.gameznflix.com/default.aspx?content=detail&id=11591385
Holy cow, hope this works. Didn't find the movie amazing (surpisingly) but definitly worth $5 :D Maybe this time around I'll like it more.

Edit: did anyone get email confirmation of the order? I haven't gotten anything yet, and it's been about 5 minutes.
Another Edit: Found the other thread about this, and nobody got the email confirmation. I also, amazingly enough, didn't realize this deal was for a BD even though it's IN THE BD/HD DVD THREAD. Oh well $5 is a good price :D And I need some sleep. Thank you and goodnight.

just wondering if anybody else picked up a copy of the NIN Live:BYiT HD-DVD Sampler at BestBuy?

It looks like it has 5 songs :
March of the Pigs
Closer
Beside you in Time
The Hand That Feeds
Head Like a Hole

I haven't watched it yet but it was free so I'm all for it.

Wait, the ad said the HD-DVD version was going to be online only, but they give out a HD_DVD promo disc?
time to start looking for rocky balboa pre order deals...
It's up on Amazon for pre order. Not much of a deal though.
Wait, the ad said the HD-DVD version was going to be online only, but they give out a HD_DVD promo disc?
Yep. I walked in and they had a small stack of the free HD promo discs sitting there. I just took it up to the cashier with my DVD's and free 300 disc and I got it for free as well.

No, I actually picked up the Blu-Ray version, that I couldn't find on the shelf. I had to ask the BB employee to look for it, and they hadn't even put it out. Typical day at BB! LOL!
Only Blu-ray sampler discs at my best buy. Now I have the full BD, the sampler disc and the 300 promo disc.
Does this come in a normal BR/HD case, a DVD style case, or a cardboard envelope?

What are you guys buying to get your sampler disc? I only saw them posted as coming with PS3 or 360 games (which we combined with the clearance...). Seeing as PS3 games are still expensive as hell, we're stuck with 3 HD-DVD samplers that we can't watch.

If you're asking about the NIN free promo disc, it comes in a small squared cardborad sleeve with the same cover art as the actual release. I also didn't have to buy anythig to get it for free just have it scanned at the register.
