The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

UPDATE: 2/25/08, 3:00pm ET
Although Paramount has removed 'There Will Be Blood' from its press site as reported below, the title may not in fact be cancelled. According to retail reports, the studio is still planning an April 8th release date, but has put an embargo on release details until March 4. Stay tuned...
EDIT: Link not working anymore so I'll just leave it at that.
Doesn't really matter anyway.
Latest video trailer for the movie says at the end 'Only on Blu Ray" (and DVD) at the end of it.
Not sure that really means anything...Trailers for Shrek The Third, Beowulf and countless others stated "Coming soon to DVD" and never mentioned the HD DVD version...part of HD DVD's horrible marketing.
Have you seen any posts about the Bitstream DTS-MA only being on the Onkyo and not the XA2? From what I'd read, it seems like the XA2 has it now in the 2.8 FW, though again, I haven't seen a specific confirmation to that yet.
XA2 bitstreams DTS-MA with firmware 2.7 and later. Pan's Labyrinth sounds great.
That's true Linkin.
I'll leave it at that.
So fucking star you have an HD DVD SA with DTS-MA bitstreaming now right?

Btw the Kevin comment was in response to the "Thank you sir may I have another?!" from Kevin Bacon in "Animal House".

Anybody getting any amazing deals on movies? I bought 6 from deep discount. I had around 15 in my cart, but decided I'd just get the ones I really wanted at $12.20.

No luck at Hollywood video around here. When I asked about HD-DVD they looked at me like I just spoke to them in German or something.

I haven't had much luck on Ebay either, as everyone is charging around $5 for shipping, and last minute snipers take the price up to around $15 for a used movie.

Don't have the money now but I want to get "Pride and Prejudice" and a few others, "The Lawless" for one if it came out. "Animal House" is one, so is "The Breakfast Club" and "Fast Times At Ridgemont High".

And... oooooh ok. :)

wow 29.99 for battlestar season 1 is pretty nice

i never seen it before, but i heard its good

i just watched Beowulf (got it from FYE.com), probably the best movie I seen on either format. Better looking than Ratatouille and Cars.
shipping blows though
Not really.

Even with their shipping, my order (The Holiday & Leaving Las Vegas) only cost me 21.17 AUS (which is $19.57 American)

$19.57 for two imports is amazing.

yea for two movies its fine, but for 3 it jumps to 18 bucks for some reason from 9 for two.

I just wonder when they are going to cut prices here in the states? Be nice to use my over time money for something other then bills.

anyone buy anything from amazon UK before? I am looking to get the Island on HD, but was wondering if "£18.38" means $18.38. Sorry if this sounds dumb just never ordered outside the US before.

You made the comment in the "HD DVD vs. BR" thread so I figured you were referencing "Animal House".
I asked you about having a capable HD DVD SA because of T2 and "Renaissance". I figured you had great taste like me and had to have those movies.
You, me, Myke and Sporadic along with a few others seem to be the ONLY one's who have some good taste in movies. Guyver is NOT included in that list.

Well I just bit the bullet and bought the xa2 for 600 from J&R Music and Computer World off of Amazon.com. 600 bucks is a lot but it is new and i have been fucked over with used products in the past. Even a refurbed one does not sit well with me. Sucks I paid that much but atleast it was 600 bucks and not 900. Also got an HDMI cable for 2.09 so I will be able to see how hdmi is now and not pay a lot for the cable.

yeah man cxl that order. $600 is a lot for a dead format.

I really thought the price would drop as well... it seems to be holding... I wonder if this is a temporary thing or what.

Is their a good combo player? Atleast that plays HD and BD at the quality of the HD of that one and upconverts at the qualit of that player? I thought 600 was a lot for a dead format but I did just work a lot of over time last week and this week and i'm geting a good amount back on taxes. If it wasn't for all that I would have never ordered it. I did just cancle it because I am unsure if I really want it. I want a good one but 600 is a high price and the fact that it is a dead format but I did have the money to blow.

i dont think youll be dissapointed with the a35 at $200 ish.. atleast youll be saving alot of money and will have cash to blow on cheap movies

the sammy combo player is currently 610 at amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-BD-UP...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1204053428&sr=8-2

the lg is at 599

http://www.amazon.com/LG-BH200-Supe...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1204053428&sr=8-1

I think youd get more value out of any of these two players

I am sure lg will have a 3rd gen combo player out later this year with updated specs...but who knows what retail will be

well I guess I could just hold off. I read LG is going to keep with HD for some time. Chances are they are just going to make combo players so I will hold out. I will keep looking out but have changed my mind on geting one at this time. I have the 360 add on drive but 360 is going out and want a player for another room. I really don't want to pay around 200 for the a35 and i REALLY didn't want to pay the 600 for the xa2. I would like the xa2 and a new one if I can get one but will hold out a little longer to see if they go down on amazon. Hell in the past day or so they went from 899 new to 599 new. So if it drops another 200 or 300 I think I will grab it.

Anyway how is deep discount when ordering from them? I see they have 10 and 13 dollar HD dvds but have never ordered from them in the past.

A question from a HD DVD prospective customer:

I am *absolutely* lost when it comes to the audio track codecs on theses discs.

I am gonna buy a 360 HD DVD add-on(~$38 after using credit) and I own the Pioneer HTS GS1 surround sound system.

If I have the 360 hooked up via optical output, I won't have any problems with audio playback, right?

No problems.. Your 360 will convert any tracks to dolby digital 5.1 and send to your receiver via optical. You won't be able to output high res audio but for $38 you cant complain.. totally worth it
so whats up with the aussie sale... anyone figured out why they all say preorder -avail on mar28?
They won't get the titles in until March 28th.

I guess they are placing one final order with Universal at special prices.

my big problem with DDD is their box sets almost always arrive in beat up condition

my earth 2 was ripped, got a new copy and the box was crushed

same with dead like me, undeclared, and a couple others I got from there

but they did get me the harry potter book early which my girlfriend really liked

ended up ordering

(1) Doom [HD DVD]
(1) Billy Madison [HD DVD]
(1) Old School [HD DVD]
(1) Tremors [HD DVD]
(1) The Last Starfighter [HD DVD]
(1) Sahara [HD DVD]
(1) End of Days [HD DVD]
(1) The Thing [HD DVD]
(1) 12 Monkeys [HD DVD]
(1) Army of Darkness [HD DVD]
(1) Lara Croft: Tomb Raider [HD DVD]
(1) The Warriors [HD DVD]
(1) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [HD DVD]
(1) Van Helsing [HD DVD]

from them. I know some are not all that great but for 10-13 bucks not bad. 179.98 for 14 HD DVDs isn't bad with shipping and tax.

Question about the free DVDs .. What page am I suppose to print off for the paperwork from Amazon, is it the invoice page?
Question about the free DVDs .. What page am I suppose to print off for the paperwork from Amazon, is it the invoice page?
Yes...its the area that says "print invoices"...you can do it from there or look up your current/past orders and click on the

Anyone got a Top 10 list of 'best' HD DVD exclusive releases? In terms of visual showcases, like Matrix was on DVD.

I don't care if they're domestic or imports.

Oh yeah, please leave King Kong 1976 off any lists, cause that'll prolly be my first purchase

I picked up an openbox A30 [with the box:)] at CC yesterday .
I have it hooked up HDMI [for video] with an optical cable for sound , but it's only putting out 2 channels .
I don't have an HDMI receiver , any ideas ?
I've read the instructions , does anyone know if I can output DD 5.1 optical with an HDMI hooked up simultaniously ?

Anyone else notice that the coices have changed a little ?

Category A Aeon Flux Babel The Italian Job
Category B The Hulk Pitch Black The Thing
Category C Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Swordfish Full Metal Jacket
Category D Firewall The Frighteners U2: Rattle and Hum
