The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

Yeah, it should make it DD as well.
Set the HDMI audio out to bitstream too for the hell of it.

Perhaps Linkin holds the key.

I, too, am looking for the best HD DVD exclusives.
Anyone got a Top 10 list of 'best' HD DVD exclusive releases? In terms of visual showcases, like Matrix was on DVD.

I don't care if they're domestic or imports.

Oh yeah, please leave King Kong 1976 off any lists, cause that'll prolly be my first purchase

There's a link the OP for them...damn, no one read's OP's anymore.

Not listed by exclusives though.

BTW: Crank (German Import) is by far the best picture to date that I've seen on HD DVD...not a significant source of grain.

Visual showcases?

My top 10 (out of the movies I've seen, in no real order) would probably be

1) Band Of Brothers (Japan)
2) Planet Earth
3) Galapagos
4) Forgotten Planet
5) The Searchers
6) King Kong (2005)
7) Nine Inch Nails: Beside You In Time
8) Blade Runner
9) Terminator 2 (France)
10) Zodiac

- edit Duh, I can't read good, those aren't all exclusive....oh well.

Here's my list in no particular order of the films that are HD DVD exclusive that looked and sounded the best to me, meaning movie quality is factored out...some of these I loved, some didn't exactly win me over. This is off the top of my head so I'll probably forget something, but oh well.

King Kong
Fearless
Matrix Trilogy
Hot Fuzz
Band of Brothers (Japan import)
Shrek the Third
Transformers
Bourne Ultimatum
The Scorpion King
Hulk

Looks like Beowulf is pretty stunning as well, but I haven't checked it out yet.

First of all, I read the OP, and saw a bunch of colored text. Since when has pink and yellow text been clickable links on this site? :whistle2:s

Secondly, as you mentioned, they are NOT listed by HD DVD exclusive. Damn, no one read's reads [*fixed*] posts either.

Thanks for the input on 'Crank' though

Thanks bud. I figured that was it, I went ahead and printed but didn't send yet until I knew for sure.

...the hell...?
First of all, I read the OP, and saw a bunch of colored text.
You have to actually read (as you say) the text and apply some comprehension. You think I just wrote colorful letters arranged in words like "Reviews:" with the name of websites underneath it because it looked cool? I didn't put obvious links like "Release Dates" and "Information on Importing" there because I think the words are funny.

Everyone else seemed to figure it out just fine, not sure why you're being so defensive about it. Just say "oh, ok" and move on. Don't be baggin' on the readability of my awesome post.

Since when has pink and yellow text been clickable links on this site? :whistle2:s
Since these forums were launched, if the text is formatted that way.

So I FINALLY got my 5 free HD-DVD's (after about 16 weeks!)

anyone interested in any of the following HD-DVD's (all sealed)
Pitch black
The Frighteners
Full Metal Jacket
Darkman
The Italian Job

Now that I think about it I might not get the xa2 unless I see it new and around 300 bucks. So I the combo players are they just the ones from LG and Samsung or does anyone else make one.

Probably not since everyone reading this board probably already has these or has their mail in rebate in progress.

I've read the instructions , does anyone know if I can output DD 5.1 optical with an HDMI hooked up simultaniously ?
That's kind of an odd problem, Rich. My A30 is set up that way and outputs 5.1 no prob.

Check out the discussion in the AVS forums at this link:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=985081

Apparently the A30 only delivers 2.0 audio when the video output is set to less than 720p. Try toggling your video output setting and see if that shakes it loose.

I discovered which 2 of the 3 optical cables I had hooked up .
My receiver only has 2 inputs .

I had the one coming out of the TV connected , instead of the HD DVD player .
It was gettung to be a real mess back behind there , I straightened it out .

Since my 360 died I've had 4 different configurations going into my receiver .
360 only , 360 & Cable box/DVR , 360 & PS3 , 360 & HD DVD .

Thanks for your help dallow & Linkin & Scobie .

It's probably been asked/answered a billion times. Sorry.
When are the HD DVDs going to stop being produced? Also, when is the last week for new :hd:?

When I was at best buy geting beowulf and 30 days of night I was told that they are going to sell HD till they run out and will not order more. The way the guy was talking they will not be having a fire sale. So if the HD DVD is 25 bucks or 30 bucks then you will not get it there for 10 or 15 like at places online. Also sony has at some point said now that HD DVD is no longer an issue what is stoping them from making BD cost more. How true that is I dont know.

So in short chances are no fire sale at best buy at least not for some time and bluray may go up in price if sony wants to be dicks.

i dont know if this has been covered before, but where can i find the full Band of Brothers series in hd for the best price? I've never dealt with any type of imports much less HD DVD imports. Thanks for any help you guys might be able to give.

Right now just LG and Samsung, but Samsung has said they are going to focus more on the blu side now so this might be their last combo unit.

Uh, that's the going rate, slick.

You won't find it anywhere cheaper even in the used market. I remember one going on eBay for $170

- edit Two days ago, sealed copies of Vol 1 & 2 went for $44.60 each on eBay.

- edit 2 And you have to think, that's BEFORE VAT tax comes off so it will be more like $150-160 shipped

Got the Xbox 360 HD DVD player the other day but don't have a 360 yet (see my sig if you can help!).

I hooked it up to my PC and got it to play King Kong. Too bad I'm still on a single core so it was slideshow city. :dunce:

Now to submit the form for 5 free HD DVDs! :bouncy:

I already have it on dvd all in one nice box set (unlike hd) and am not willing to spend $150ish shipped for 5 disks of material i already have but only in higher resolution on a "dead" format, slick.

Well, what were you expecting? Somebody to post a link to a Japanese firesale where you could pick them up for $50? Did you even do one bit of research before posting that post?

It's 5 separate discs coming from one of the most expensive region to order HD-DVDs from. No disc comes from Japan for under $35 dollars unless you have somebody in the country that can grab it at a second hand store or you catch an idiot selling them off on the cheap since "HD-DVD is dead".

$150 is a bargain since that was the original pre-order price/below MSRP in Japan and the fact that these will be OOP very soon.

I was shooting for around $100 shipped. $150 before shipping is stupid especially since I already have the DVD tin of this series. It could be coming from fucking Krypton for all I care. All I could come up with was Japanese sites before posting the question..I thought a fellow CAG knew of an importer with an English site. Don't be so snooty because you are a hd dvd importing "pro."
Any Beowolf impressions ? It's seems like it's one of the last of the last .
It is okay. I didn't like it in theater but on HD it is better. Audio sucks but that could be my TV. I'm seting up for 5.1 now to give that a shot. Extras are nice but the deleted scenes are early 3d and look like crap. They show how they made it and it was in a 25x25 feet room and that they guy that plays Beowolf was casted only for his voice. I have to say all but the audio is not bad. Audio atleast on my tv sucks and this goes for some other HD DVDs BD DVDs and normal DVDs. Only the normal DVDs have played the best when it comes to the audio. All are being played on the 360/360 HD player and PS3 with the TV being used for audio. When I get my 5.1 set up I will let you know about the audio but it is about 2 or 3 years old of a system and it is a hometheater in a box from Walmart so it wont be all that great.

Anyway other then audio not bad worth it if you can get it for around 20 dont think any HD dvd is worth the 30 or more that places want.

Yeah, you can't call the audio bad when you're listening via the TV.
It's getting perfect audio scores at various review sites.

Again, it isn't $150 before shipping. The site takes off VAT before it goes out so it's more like $160ish shipped...from Japan.

There is an importer with an English site but it will cost you even more than that since the importer's a middle man and the Yen has recently become stronger. Xploited had it for $170 before shipping (and when he gets it back in stock, it's going to be more expensive) and Play-Asia has it for $44+ per disc.

It's not that I'm snooty, it's that I tell you the best place to get it and get genuine shock in return at the price as if I'm a retard for suggesting that.

But whatever, enjoy your metal tin, I'm sure that's much better than watching it in the best quality possible.
For that much coin, I'll keep enjoying my DVDs.
That's fine. I'm not saying that you have to upgrade.

It's just well known that "cheap" and "imports for Japan" never go together. It's like oil and water. You want something from Japan, it's almost guaranteed you are going to be paying a pretty penny for whatever you want.

I had a friend in Japan hook me up so I only had to spend $80 for it but I would have gladly dropped $150+ on them because they are that good.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=901348&highlight=Band+Of+Brothers

Oh yeah. If I had the full theater setup and that kind of money to throw around, sure.

But not even having an HDTV yet, I might as well watch it on my 360.
Yeah, you can't call the audio bad when you're listening via the TV.

Also what makes the audio on my tv bad is the fact that the speakers direct the sound down and not out to the viewer. I got the 5.1 set up but the damn thing plays only in 5.1 for a dvd you put in it. I have the video for hometheater in a box(HTIAB) going to my tv and the audio goes directly to the 5 speakers and sub. I then have the audio out going from the tv to the HTIAB. So I can play the sound on the TV or with the HTIAB only issue is it does not play it in the 5.1 and plays only in a 2.1 with the left and right frong speakers and the sub. The sound seems better then on the TV but not what I had wanted. This also does the same when playing the PS3 and 360/360 HD add on.

I'm using the panasonic SA-HT670 so if anyone knows anything about this system and knows if it will play in 5.1 let me know. It will play what you put in it but as of now I can not get it to play what I plug up to it. I'm guessing it wont seeing how it is a left and right rca cable that I have going from the TV to it and I dont remember seeing for any other type of cable for audio in the back of it.

It needs to go directly from the player to the receiver.
Not to the TV.
Same with PS3/360. They have to go via optical/HDMI to your reciever for surround.

The TV will only output 2.0 to your receiver.

So it is 5.1 every time I play it or the 2.0 all the time? What I was wanting is to be able to play 5.1 during the day and the 2.0 at night when others were asleep. I can play it during the day but at night dont want to wake people up with the 5.1 when I get home from work. I don't want pay more then 400 or 500 for a set up and dont want one that is going to take up alot of room.

sorry, but I have to laugh at people who want high definition home theater set-ups on the cheap... it's something you have to spend money on and enjoy.... if you don't have the cash, don't even bother half-assing it... just save up till you can get something solid.

For smaller rooms and lower overall volumes, you don't have to pay that much DestroyVega.

Sendme.
It doesn't work like that without a lot of workarounds.

Or you can get an HDMI receiver.

Have the players and systems hooked up via HDMI and one HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV.
Then you can pass the standard audio to the TV for quiet/night use, and use the receiver for surround whenever you want.

I believe you can do that.
I alway use my speakers, so I'm not that sure.

I just want something better then the tv speakers. I dont have alot of cash and dont want to spend alot on a set up atleast not yet. I aslo dont have alot of room for the large speakers. If I could spend the 200-300 for just one speaker and 500-600 on a reciever I would. I'm just looking for something that is not going to take up that much room and not going to cost a lot till I can get my own place and have the room for a better set up. For here a home theater in a box is great aslong as it doesn't have large speakers(ones that are on a stand) due to the lack of room. I'm not looking for the best sound I'm just looking for better sound and more then just the left and right.

Only bad thing is the 360 is one that does not have for hdmi. I bought mine before they started to put the hdmi port on them.

Well for Beowolf the sound is great in 2.1 with the setup I have. So change that about the sound being crap that I had said.

Dear God, why does Deepdiscount.com's shipping have to suck so much? I order six movies, two of which are currently in stock. Three days after I placed the order, one of the out of stock movies is shipping, but not the two that have been in stock since the day I ordered.

Amazon's prime shipping has spoiled me to no end. I'd almost rather pay $2-3 more and have them later in the week than wait 2-3 weeks to get a movie.

I was in the same boat as you. I ended up canceling my DeepDiscount order and repurchasing them on Amazon while I still had my Amazon Prime trial membership still going on.
